I have had the Mirena in since I was 12 weeks postpartum. My daughter is now five months old. I have had so many side effects that I also thought were due to just having a baby and the life changes that follow (plus my kids are 12 months and 1 day apart so who knows what's out of wack once you've been pregnant for two years straight!). I've had some headaches, sleeplessness, so many pregnancy symptoms I took a pregnancy test and had the doctor do one, incredible moodiness, I hate being touched (I felt this way with both pregnancies), no libido...all of these have made in incredible strain on my marriage. If things don't improve between us a few months after I get this hell-stick IUD removed we're going to couples therapy! I was diagnosed with depression at 14, but it has been under control since then. However, since Mirena I have been incredibly depressed. I have been on birth control since 14 due to terrible periods/cramping etc and never had an issue. I am going to switch to the copper/hormone free IUD and just pray my periods have changed now that I've had two children. Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay...this is amazing, cause I thought I was crazy but now I know all of us are!!!hahah...I had the Mirena put in in early October. I am perimenopausal and my hubby has a vasectomy. The docs encouraged it to help with my menopausal symptoms, primarily irregular cycles and cramping due to not bleeding - they said that was due to low progesterone and the Mirena would work wonders. I had it put in (very very painful - and this from a woman who gave birth, at home, two separate times with nothing but a midwife and some gentle massaging during the birthings!) and never stopped bleeding. Not once! I have gone through two boxes of tampons and three of pads. I have cramping all the time, and low back ache. I noticed that my bras felt really sore and enlarged (so did hubby) and they grew overnight. I gained three pounds and started crying at the time. The final insult: no sex drive. zippo. none at all. I also have terrible vagina odor which is, I know gross to admit, but a very new thing. I think that there are many women who simply cannot tolerate these hormones. Our bodies know what to do and I am going to brave the change without intervention. I went to see doctor today and, of course, she tried to talk me out of removal. She even had the nerve to say that it was good to have in, to protect my uterus, for eventual Hormone replacement therapy -as if I had ever mentioned that as an option? I looked at her and said, "take it out". Now I don' t know if this is imagination, but I swear the cramps have abated in the past several hours. I am still bleeding but feel hope for its ending. I would not recommend this to anyone and to those out there being told its value in managing menopausal symptoms, move on. It is not worth it - the change is change enough!

HI, i have had my coil for almost four years. I had it inserted in October 2005, 4 months after my first son was born. it wasn't really painful but felt a bit weird like someone was opening an umbrella inside my uterus. Anyway since then (the past 2 years in particular) i have had crazy moon swings, my breasts are almost always tender, i have a really offensive discharge(which is awful) no libido! my poor husband. i never really had this problem before having the coil. i am quite depressed, cry spontaneously, am irritable and have little patience. when im due on i have really bad lower back pain, stabbing pains in my sides, nausea, bloating, and constipation. but the most recent one is acne! i don't get spots( maybe one when im on but not one every day!) they are mostly on and around my jaw and chin. i feel like a kid again, im 28! my confidence has suffered and i have put on about a stone in the last 6 months. i also get almost constant stomach pains, mostly just under my diaphragm and get heartburn with most foods i eat. i have very light and irregular periods but always get all the pre-period symptoms. the most awful ones are the acne and bad odor. has anyone else experienced bed odor? i also feel tired all the time and just want to sit and do nothing. i don't feel productive at all and have lost my desire to be productive. I am going to see my doctor this week so hopefully she will be able to shed some light on everything. i really want to get it taken out but am scared that i might fall pregnant again. i have one beautiful son but don't really want anymore children. should i put up with all these symptoms? anyway, will let you know how my appointment goes. take care and thanks for making me feel better and not so alone!

I've had horrible side effects whilst using, and horrible withdrawal symptoms whilst coming off Yasmin.

I came off using Yasmin 5 days ago. Since then, i've had horrible vivid nightmares, my head hasn't stopped banging, and i've been feeling really run down in general.

I'm assuming theres more to come than this though.

Whilst I was using Yasmin, i was the most moody, depressed, out of control person ever. I thought everyone hated me. And even though I was going through some personal problems at the time, I now realize that it was probably me that was making it worse in my own head. I used to fight and argue with my boyfriend for no reason. I fell out with my best friends for no reason. I felt sick all the time. My leg used to randomly go dead when i was sleeping, or lying down. I used to get really bad headaches. I used to get emotional (or hormotional as I call it!), mixed with anxiety attacks. and I completely and utterly lost my sex drive. now for a 22yr old I don't think thats normal! I just hope it will get back to normal, and quickly! I've realized hormonal contraception isn't right for me. Using Yasmin has completely put me off using hormonal contraception ever again, and I am considering getting a copper IUD fitted asap.

I have been given three procedures with kenalog injections. First was in May when I has an epidural for my work related back injury. Though I received little pain relief from the epidural, I began to have menstrual spotting only a week after my regular period ended. This spotting continued every day for about three weeks. I had a normal end of June, beginning of July period. I started my next period the Friday before my first SI joint injection with Kenalog which was Wed. Aug 5th. Well from there my period never ended. Since then I've spotted everyday and all day long. I am sore from having to wear pads all the time. I went next to my f/u appt where they gave me another SI joint injection. I did tell them about this bleeding, but they weren't concerned. So here I am still spotting until today. This morning I woke up feeling fine besides my usual spotting I've had. Got to work, was working for about an hour to so and began to cramp. Went to bathroom and passed a clot about the size of the palm of my hand. And then consisted to have heavy bleeding soaking a pad in about 1.5-2.0 hour time. During the whole spotting I've had, I took preg. tests, with most recent one a week ago and was neg. My other concern is I have an IUD-the copper Paragard. Called my OB-GYN and she wanted to see me right away. Left work and on my way there (45 min. drive) I began feeling lightheaded and weak. My mom ended up driving me the rest of the way. Anyway, everything checked out fine-IUD ok, neg preg test, no chance for tubal preg. Was told must be side effect of the Kenalog. I've been bleeding for like 6 weeks and am soooo sore from pads all the time. I am on light duty due to my work injury and I feel I should be covered for today and tomorrow because OB-GYN wants me on bed rest to stop this heavy bleeding. I feel I should be paid under Workers' Comp since these missed days are related to a complication from the treatment of my work related injury. Any suggestions or comments from anyone?

I've finally had the mirena removed - about 2 months ago. I'd had a very light period around the time that it was removed, but none since. My body aches a little, still, but it's more tolerable that it had been before. Initially i could NOT stop urinating! i lost easily 3 lbs of nothing but water weight in the first couple of weeks. As excited as i was about that, it's a bit at a standstill now, losing the weight, but overall, my tolerance has grown, my sex drive has returned and mood swings have drastically been more controllable. I enjoy playing with my daughters again, and i've been able to get a lot more around the house cleaned. I feel about 70% better now and i'll take that any day over what i had been feeling. I do still get melancholy every now and then but not as severely.
in the past 2 week i've started taking vitamins - w/ a little extra b12 and calcium w/ D - to try and help my body balance out. that definitely makes a difference in how i feel through the day.
1 thing i can't get over is the constant thirsty feeling and almost a copper taste that lingers in my mouth, but i can only assume that after retaining water my body is re-adjusting to the intake/release ratio. good thing i like water and tea :) over all - i love having the mirena! ----- REMOVED!

Hello all,

First of all, I am relieved to hear I am not alone in this. Second though, I'm sorry others are suffering this much! This is horrible. Besides the unpredictable bleeding and terrible cramping, I have been battling bacterial vaginosis for the last few months. I am convinced the mirena iud is the cause. On my last visit to the doctor on 5-13-09, he prescribed antibiotics yet again and said to "give it some time" and come back in August. That is when I am due for my annual exam. When I am on the antibiotics, the cramping, bleeding and discharge stop, but as soon as it's finished, it all starts again. Like a few other comments I've read, I too have no sex drive and am so dry, sex hurts sometimes. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced problems with BV with the mirena iud. Thank you and best of luck to all of you!!!!!

I am 26 and just gave birth to my first child. I had Mirena put in just a week ago and was very excited about this form of birth control. However, it has been the most uncomfortable week of my entire life. Not only did I have the most intense cramps at the time of insertion of the device, but last night I awoke in the middle of the night to the MOST EXTREME pain in my lower abdomen that I have ever felt. It felt like someone was pulling my insides out. I was so sick with pain that I went to the bathroom and ended up vomiting and curled up on the floor crying out for help at 2am. My 8 week old son was crying so much because I know he was scared for how his mommy was sounding. My husband took care of him while I got in the bath and nearly passed out from the pain. It subsided about 2 hours later and I was able to fall back asleep. I called the office today and had it removed!!! I already feel like I am ME again, and without some alien object in my body trying to trick it. Maybe I should have gone with a copper one... but I think I will just stay away from it all together and use the pill or the shot or SOMETHING other than any kind of IUD.
Also, I gained in excess of 70 lbs with my son (how that happened is beyond me! I started at 130!) and was loosing it steadily since my son's birth. However, this last week I have not lost a pound and truly believe it is because of Mirena. I did not change my diet and have been taking even more walks and getting more exercise than before.

My daughter is 16 and was given Levaquin 500 for a sinus infection. While on the medication she was tired but not much else in the side effect category. Now here we are 4 weeks later and she has acute abdomen pain, extreme fatigue, nausea, a headache, and she has lost 21 lbs in 2 weeks. I took her to the doctor and they ran a cbc, chem 12, urinalysis, and an electrolyte panel. All came back negative. Basically my perfectly healthy little girl is suffering from this. I went back and looked at the Levaquin packet because I know it can sometimes take a few weeks AFTER medications are stopped for side effects to show themselves and of course, all her symptoms are listed.

Okay, I had Mirena put in by my doctor a little over a month ago. I had my first period as scheduled, but I bled for 2 weeks. I have been spotting ever since. This is getting on my nerves. My question to everyone else is this: has anyone noticed a metal or copper smell with their discharge? I seem to be having more discharge than usual, and it has a coppery smell. It doesn't matter how many times I take a shower, it's still there. I am currently waiting on a call back from my doctors office. This is frustrating me more than anything. It is making me smell like I'm dirty. UGHHH. I'm leaning more and more towards getting myself permanently fixed because nothing else is working for me. Someone please help me. I can't help but think that I'm not the only one having this issue.

Thanks

I think it's terrible how some doctor's give some info and others give different info, it is hideous - they should all be trained to fully inform their patients. After my Mirena fell out I did some research on all IUD's and bc pills and was shocked at what I found. I did find a lot more info about the IUD's and the BC pill causing abortions. For those who are against abortion, all of these IUD's cause abortions that the woman is not even aware of if a fertilized egg happens to make it through. This was explained by my doc and I did do further research on on the net. All you have to do it google "do iuds cause abortion or do bc pills cause abortion" and you will get more info on it. Here is a summary - Mirena and all bc pills have 3 mechanisms- 1) inhibiting ovulation 2)thickening the cervix mucous making it hard for sperm to travel to the egg, and 3)thinning and shriveling of the uterus to the point that it is unable or less able to facilitate the implantation of the fertilized egg. The first 2 mechanisms are contraceptive, the last is abortive. The Paraguard is only slightly different in that the copper disables the sperm, but again if one should make it past and fertilize an egg, the copper creates such a hostile environment that the egg can not attach. It does depend on your opinion on when life begins - whether it is at the moment of conception or when the fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. Only when all 3 mechanisms fail will you get pregnant, that is why they have such a high success rate of 99%. So again, google this if you want to know more because if you take any of these methods, you could potentially have an abortion and not even know it. Some Dr.'s will not even insert the IUD's for ethical reasons because they know it causes unknown abortions. You could end up having one once a month, once a year or luck out and never, but the risk is there. If you need proof of this you can call Dr. in Federal Way, WA at ****** and ask if he does the Mirena or the Paraguard and you will be told he doesn't do either for ethical reasons. If you are serious about getting more information, I can forward it to you. I urge everyone looking for a good birth control to not only look up the name of the product, but check out negative side effects and ask if it could potentially cause abortions. I am sitting on the fence to whether life begins at conception or begins when it attaches to the wall of the uterus, all I know is that I am sick of all the hormones messing me up, changing my moods, and ruing my sex drive among other things. If you would like more information, please email, serious inquiries only. I believe it is wrong to give a woman a form of birth control and not make it very clear all of the side effects especially the abortive side effect when they don't even know if their patient is pro-life or pro-choice. I have a website that explains the bc pill part of it and would be happy to forward to anyone who is interested. My direct email is ****** One more thing, the Depo shot works the same. All I hope to do is educate women about what I have learned in the last 3 days. Please give this information or post on any site you see fit to get this information out!!!!!!!! IF ALL YOU DO IS GOOGLE IT, YOU WILL SEE WHERE i AM COMING FROM IN MY MESSAGE.

I've had the Mirena for 2 years now and have had what appears to be a yeast infection almost every month. My doctor said Mirena is not the cause because it's the wrong kind of hormone, but it is too coincidental to me having only had 1 or 2 of them ever before the Mirena. I even had a Copper T IUD before this one and never had any complications. I'm so glad to have found this website to know I'm not the only one out there with this issue. I'm having it removed just as soon as possible.

Now im expected to go get an xray and find out what happened. Im hoping its not embedded. Now I have to even wonder if the copper t will work for me? I guess there is no magical birth control. I will post my updated news as I find out more.

It's great to read all these side affects to put things in perspective. I've been on the ring for about two years now and am finally getting off it and exploring my options, which is how I got directed here. Things that now appear to be symptoms and not me getting old (at 26) and falling apart: moodiness, in that I shut off completely to my partner and feel very blank in general; depression; major digestion problems that run the gamut; cramping in my side, migraines; nausea; sensitive breasts; chest pains...Man the list goes on and so many of these have been listed here. Good to know, and I wish I had read this site two years ago instead of feeling like a hypochondriac or an over-sensitive nutcase. Thanks to everyone who's posted, but also: what do you use now, those of you who've stopped? This is the only birth control I've ever been on, besides condoms etc.

I had Mirena inserted Oct 3, 2008 six weeks after having my first child. I too really wish i had done my homework. My side effects were little things and i really wasn't sure if i wanted to have it removed since it does work and i enjoyed not having a period. But in the end i decided that the fatigue, hair-loss, acne, headaches, inability to lose my pregnancy weight and last but not least, my mood swings were all hindering my daily life more than i realized. i feel ugly due to the acne, thinning of my hair, and because im stuck at 170 lbs and i'm only 5 ft tall. i didn't want to go out in public. I was so so tired all the time for no reason. i feel more tired than i did being 6 months pregnant in the military working 15 hour days with only one 10 minute break an hour to sit with anemia. it just isnt fair to my daughter that i can't give her the attention she deserves. So, March 2nd i finally got it removed. The removal didn't hurt. My period came immediately. It's only been three days and my acne is about 60% clearer. Unfortunately the headaches continue. I still feel tired, but it hasn't been as severe. I really can't wait to get back to feeling like my old self. It's been so long. Now my dilemma is what to do about preventing pregnancy. I've never used any bc besides condoms but my husband and I don't really enjoy sex with them but i'm afraid after this experience to use any other kind of hormonal bc. Any suggestions???

I have had the mirena almost two years. Wow now I know im not going insane. My energy has been sucked right out of me, ive been forgetting things left and right and got my first muffin top. I am interested in having mine replaced with the copper t. Does anyone have any experience with this? I like the sound of it because it contains no hormones.
What to do?

Lower back pain, depression, anxiety, mood swings, mind fog, out of sorts,
lack of energy, junk food cravings, terrible acne on neck chin and back

I just posted yesterday about my side effects and making a dr. appt., well I went in today to have it removed and they said it had gone up into my uterus and I now have to have surgery and be cut open because of it, I also may not be able to have any more children. This mirena has been a nightmare. The dr. I saw today, which wasn't the dr. that put it in, said he wont even put it in because of the side effects, which makes me mad because a dr. that works in the same practice there told me it was great and insisted it would not have any side effects and that there had never been any side effects. I am sooo stressed out about this, but want to thank you guys for your information, If I had not have found this sight and read this then I would still be getting bloodwork done trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with me!

I have had my Mirena for about 16 months now and have been experiencing all of the below listed side effects. Headaches, Blurred Vision, Dizziness, Back Aches, Acne, Hair Loss, Mood Swings, Loss of Sex Drive, and the newest thing.......blood clots. I noticed a worm like vein in my left breast and went in to see my OBGYN and he sent me over to a surgeon. I was diagnosed with Mondor's Disease. Over this past weekend I have noticed a sharp pain in my leg. I have an appointment today with the surgeon and I will let you know what happens. After all of this I have looked on the internet and deep vein thrombous is a side effect of an IUD. I am praying this will all go away after I have the Mirena removed. I went in last week and my OBGTN refused to remove it disagreeing with me that it isn't causing these things. I called him today and said I want it out now! I will keep you all posted. Thanks.

my ob/gyn recommended this IUD highly..said she had it in herself and it was great for all her patients...i read the physicians brochure on the mirena website and i think that should have been provided to me...if i had known that this thing causes blood pressure, anemia and blood sugar problems...i never would have gotten it since i already had those problems to begin with...i wasn't given enough info..i wish i had researched this better beforehand...the nurse wrote me last night and said it needed to come out as it has caused a pelvic infection from the insertion...this wasn't put in for birth control..as i haven't had anyone to be with in over a year anyway..it was put in to stop heavy bleeding...sounded like a great idea...i have every symptom you guys have had except fot the acne and hair loss issues...the anxiety and pain is the worst ever ..and sweating...geez...how long after it comes out does one get back to normal...i'd rather hear it from your experience...than listen to the "experience" of my doctor...i used to have the copper T and if it's still avail..i'm getting it back...i don't like the idea of hormones running loose that don't need to be...also if you read that brochure it increases breast cancer rates for some...and lots and lots of other symptoms...i expected the breast and abdominal tenderness and maybe some mood issues considering it was a hormone...but this is ridiculous....i'm 43 and feel 143! if i had the nerve i'd pull it out myself...but with my luck...something i need might come with it..lol ..don't need the reproductive junk anymore since that did it's job and there are no returns...i checked..lol...thanks for listening

I am 38 yrs and have had my Mirena for about 15 months. Since then I have gained almost 15 pounds. I called my OBGYN and spoke to his nurse and told her about my weight gain and she said that nobody has ever complained about it being a side effect. I also told her about my stomach bloating so bad I swear I look 6 months pregnant. I do no have a period AT ALL anymore but still have PMS. My breasts get so sore. I'm tired all the time, constant headaches, cramps everyday, wich is unusal for me because I've never had a problem with cramps, EVER! I also have a clear discharge but mine doesn't have an odor. It only does when I'm supposed to be on my period. It just smells like the normal odor from when you actually bleed but that goes away. Also I know not having a period to some is a god send but I would prefer to at least have a little bleeding(to get some relief if that makes any sense) Since I've had it placed the only time I could tell I was on my cycle was when I would wipe after using the bathroom and there would be a little blood. I haven't had to use a tampon since I 've had it placed 10/2007 and now I don't bleed at all. After the birth of my son 15 yrs ago I had a different IUD...the copper T and loved it. When your insurance doesn't pay for hardly any method of birth control, except for the pill(which I hate) and I'm getting older I think I will get this thing taken out and have my tubes tied. Thank you everyone for your comments. Now I know it isn't just all in my head.

I am 20 years old and i got the copper IUD fitted on the 24th October '08 after being fed up of taking the pill for 4 years.
It has been nothing but trouble since I had it put in!! It was extremely painful when I had it inserted, I have had bleeding in between periods, migraines before periods which I have never experienced before, cramping before, after and in between periods, rectal pain for some reason, bacterial vaginosis, extreme bloating, pain and bleeding during intercourse and mood swings.
Im sick to death of it already and it makes me dread my period, i cant even go out when im on because i feel that ill.
So my advice to you ladies, if your thinking of having one inserted, is don't do it!! Women have enough to deal with, without having extra symptoms to worry about!!!
