I have had Mirena for about more than a year now. I can relate to many of these symptoms. I have 2 girls and with my first daughter I've never had any problems until i got the IUD inserted in me. Worst side effects are constant back pain everyday, weight loss, the WORST bladder problem which i've never had before (just found out yesterday I have a Cyst on my ovary) , the worst mood swings ever. I've been to the emergency room time for feeling so weak and being so pale because of stomach pains (not knowing if its from the IUD, but was really scary for me) NO Sex Drive at all since the IUD. I am 21 and married, I believe i should have enough to want to be with my husband. To please him.. Right?? And when i do it is so painful.
I went to the Dr. yesterday to remove it and the Dr. told me in these words" I am not going to remove it for you, I respect you and your decision but i would not remove it, You will HAVE to go to another Dr." and then he gave me my money back (i dont have insurance) But I thought that was really strange. It's my decision to want to remove it. Isn't that crazy. It's my choice. So since my Dr. doesn't want to remove it, i am now going to choose another Dr. to remove it from me. I just think their are so many problems with the Mirena IUD and knowing if you are having plenty of symptoms you should remove it, dont take any chance!! I know I'm not

I have been on the nuvaring for a little over 3 years now and have never thought to search for possible side effects until now.
I am constantly tired, I never want to do anything, My body aches. I have NO sex drive. I'm always dealing with depression. I randomly cry for no reason. I've ruptured a cyst on my ovaries which landed me in the ER...
Finding this site is making me really rethink my bc choice. I love the convenience of the Nuvaring, but I miss having energy :(
Any suggestions on what i should switch to?

Thank God for this site. I have been trying to figure out for the last year what is wrong with me! I have had such unexplainable depression and mood swings for so long and I never would have thought to attribute it to Mirena. Thank all of you ladies for posting on this site and diagnosing me, because obviously none of my doctors are qualified to do it! Everyone I have seen has done nothing but brush it off. I also had an US done the other day and they found a cyst on my ovary. My psoriasis (which I have only had a few small spots on my scalp my entire life) has flared up tremendously all over my body. I have lost all motivation to do anything and have nearly ruined all of my relationships with family and friends due to my laziness, depression, and mood swings. I will hate having a period again, but as I keep reading all of your posts I realize that having a period will be a blessing compared to dealing with all of this. I am making an appt on Monday to have it removed! Thanks so much ladies!

Oh Mirena..... how i wanted you to work so badly.... But alas, you have failed me.
I got the Mirena IUD inserted in February of 2009. The insertion was terribly painful, but my doctor had warned of that since I haven't had any children and I would have a smaller uterus than women who had. The pain and nausea caused by the insertion went away within 8-12 hours. For the first three months, it did everything it was supposed to do: normal periods, no weight gain, no (new) mood swings, effective contraception... Beginning on day 1 of the fourth month, things went crazy. I have had 10 periods in 6 months, some lasting about 8 days and starting again 7-8 days later. I had a two day long migraine (I've never had one before this). I have been unbelievably moody, have experienced an extremely decreased sex-drive, bloating, exhaustion, the list goes on.
So when I couldn't take it anymore, I went to the doctor and the strings were no where to be found. Then I went for an ultrasound and sure enough, the Mirena had relocated itself between my cervix and rectum........... Not to mention, there's a 4.5cm cyst on one of my ovaries. The next step is a laparoscopy (procedure where the enter through the belly button) to retrieve the Mirena and check out the cyst.
I thought Mirena was going to be such a dream, but it's turned out to be a nightmare. I never had any adverse side effects from the pill in the 6 years I used it prior to Mirena and now I wish I had never switched. I know people that it's worked for without trouble, but unfortunately I was not that lucky. Like most of you, I had researched more than I felt necessary and read all the negative side effects others experienced, I just hoped that wouldn't happen to me. I'm not telling anyone not to get it, I would just advise that you don't switch to Mirena if you have something that is working properly. It's simply not worth it (financially, physically or emotionally).

I have had Mirena in for about a year. I got it because after trying birth control pills, I was getting severe migraines all the time. My doctor told me I was at risk for stroke and should never take birth control pills again. Not wanting to have to use condoms the rest of my life, I asked for options other than the pill. My doctor strongly recommended Mirena. Well, I had it put in in September of 2008. At first I had the normal symptoms of heavy bleeding, severe cramps, etc. But after about 2 months that calmed down. However, I felt bloated all the time and started gaining weight. I was only 21 at the time, and had never had a problem with weight gain in my entire life. I wasn't over-eating, and I was still exercising. In the last year I have gained about 20 pounds. Anyways, around January I got a large cyst on one of my ovaries which eventually burst, but I still feel like I have sharp stabbing pains in my abdomen quite a lot. The real problem started a few months ago. I have been getting severe migraines again, and they are coming more and more frequently. I get optical auras with the migraines and often feel tingling in my face and hands. I am concerned that something more severe could be wrong or that Mirena is putting me at risk for stroke. I was told this would not happen with Mirena, but I have had no other significant changes that could account for the migraines. I have had migraines since I was a little girl, but never this often or with the strange tingling. The only other time I had migraines like this was on the pill. I really like Mirena because it is easy and I don't have to think about it, but I hate the migraines, weight gain, bloating, cysts, etc. I don't know what else I would use, though, since I can't be on estrogen-based birth controls. Does anybody have any advice? I am only 22 years old and don't want children for a while. I really don't know what to do.

The only thing that was really bothering me was that I was gaining a lot of weight. I was only 21 at the time and had never had a problem with gaining weight in my life. It was so weird. Over the last year I have gained about 20 pounds and am really upset. About 4 months after getting Mirena I got a large cyst on one of my ovaries, but it eventually burst and went away. All of those things I suppose I could have dealt with, though. However, after about 9 or 10 months with the thing I started getting severe migraines again. I got married in June and over the past few months I have had more and more frequent migraines. I have optical auras and often feel like I have tingling in my face and hands, which is similar to what I had when on the pill. I am concerned that this could be a serious problem. I like having Mirena because it is easy and I don't have to think about it, but I am not sure what to do. I can't be having migraines all the time, and I also would rather not have the weight gain and cysts. I'm not sure what else I would use, though. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me know. I am only 22 and don't want kids for a while.

I've always been the kinda of girl that has horrible side effects with birth control. Every time i went on a different pill i had to deal with migraines constantly. I hated it. After i had my daughter i looked into mirena. I read everything online about it and just figured what the heck i'll try it anyways. Well i put it in in February and it seemed like the best birth control ever. I didn't have any headaches so cramps, my periods even pretty much stopped after the first month. 3 months later i was having sharp pains in my side. I thought maybe the IUD moved or something and that's what was hurting me so i went to my doctor. They sent me for an ultrasound and turns out i had a huge cyst on my left ovary. The doctor tried to see if it would just shrink and go away but 3 months later i was still feeling the same. The doctor told me that it was a big possibility he was gonna have to take my ovary. I only have one baby and i know i want more so that scared me really bad. I ended up having to have the surgery and luckily they were able to drain the cyst without removing my ovary. THANK GOD!! While they were in there they also found another good sized cyst on my tube that they had to remove. I didn't think anything about my birth control being the cause until about a week after my surgery. After that i went online and started reading more about Mirena. The first website i went to had it in big letters on the list. MAY CAUSE OVARIAN CYSTS. It also said these usually fix themselves and aren't a big deal. Well in my case i wasn't so lucky. I just wanted to warn those other ladies out there that know they want more children that there is always a possibility that Mirena could do this to you too. And maybe in your case you might not be so lucky and they'll have to take the ovary. It makes me sad that a birth control that i had in for just 6 months could have lowered my chances so much for having that second baby i've always wanted. My doctor also told me now that i've had to have surgery on my tubes that im at high risk for ectopic pregnancy now. Im now looking into different birth controls trying to find the right one for me. Any suggestions?

I am 22 and had Mirena inserted in June. Since then I have been losing hair dramatically, my marriage has suffered due to the horrible, horrible mood swings, I am tired all the time and can barely care for my child which sucks since my husband is on a boat six months out of the year, and I haven't stopped bleeding since it was inserted which has been two months! I have gone several times to try to fix it since it stabs my husband and no matter what they do it continues to do so. I have had a non-stop headache since I got it and even tried anti-depressants thinking I was crazy. I have recently stopped the pills and am going to get Mirena removed as soon as possible. I would warn anyone thinking about this BC method to think twice or their relationships and sanity might be in danger as well.

OMG! I can't believe this! I told my husband last night that I was going to do more research on the Mirena, because I thought it was making my sex drive non-existent. He said he didn't think it was supposed to have that side effect. I am so glad I read this site. I had my Mirena put in January 2008, after my last child. I thought it would be great: no periods, no worrying about taking the pill, etc. After that, I gained 20 pounds and can't get the weight off, no matter what. I too had to get thyroid tests that came out fine. Got on anti-depressants for my tiredness, soreness every morning, and overall depression. Really moody, too. I thought it was the end of the world. I don't like to take pills to be happy, when my life is great. I am calling my doctor to have this removed immediately. Can anyone recommend a good birth control pill/method other than this that won't cause weight gain?

I am 21 and am in the second week of the second pack of pills. I have to attend a low-income based women care and either these docs don't really care or are out of their minds. i have been having problems with cysts on ONE ovary (left) about a year and a half ago the cyst got 2 inches in diameter. It supposedly went away on its own. I ended up in the ER again a few months ago and found out there is another cyst on my left ovary (which i have reason to believe its the same damn cyst, just flaring up and down)
Anyway I have had horrible side effects on just about EVERY BC i've been on. depo and numerous diff pills. I even had a 2 month period while on the depo. but with Loestrin I have had countless side effects that incl:
hot flashes, anxiety, depression and mood swings, cold sweats, restlessness, sore and swollen breasts, constipation, heart burn, almost constant back pain and ovarian pain and worst pain when on my period. I had 2 periods my first month, missed ONE pill in the beginning of my second month and had a second period within 2 weeks with the most horrible pain. The only good side effects are an increased sex drive and a change in appetite.
I really don't know what to do. try a different bc pill or just stop altogether considering all the problems i've had.
i've thought about ortho-novum, girls my age seem to have less complaints about it....
this is so frustrating!!!

Hello All, I have had Mirena placed for almost 1 year and I have also had thoughts about getting rid of it. I have never had acne before expect for the occasion zit every now and then. Now I have these bumps/pimples that barely come to a head and it I bust them, they will leave a scar. But the icing on the cake was when I developed at cyst on my jaw bone (not cute). After visiting the doctor Over and Over again, they finally put me on medication that has helped clear my skin up. I have also experienced the itchy skin and I thought it was all in my head but only certain areas of my body itch like my shin and elbow but it drives me crazy and I also have a medication to help with the itching. I don’t like taking medications but these have helped tremendously!

I got the mirena put on March of 2008. At first it was hard to get use to it, i had breast ache, back pains, headaches. My period came 1 time after the mirena was put in. So for the past 2 weeks i have felt this cramping pain on my right side where my pelvic bone is, right above that. I went to my ob gyn doctor whom performed an ultra sound and said the mirena was in place and nothing to worry about. So the pain is still shooting, so i went to a new ob gyn whom told me she couldn't feel the string. She mention to me she couldn't even see it, and there was a chance that the mirena has moved and that is why i am having pain on my right side. The pain is like a tough cramp, and it runs through my leg. I don't know what to think. I don't do well with pills, or depo, thats why i got the mirena put in.. I don't know what to think. Tuesday I go get another ultrasound to see if the mirena has moved..

Holy crap! Thank you all for helping me to justify my pending MIRENA removal on Wednesday, June 17th. I thought I was pregnant again - but I wasn't. Instead, via ultrasound, they found a large cyst on my ovary - the kind that's an UNDEVELOPED FETUS - it can have hair, fingernails, teeth and sweat glands - but never had a heartbeat! I have to live with this til it goes away or they decide to remove it... It's really sad for me to think about a little one that tried to make it but didn't...
After insertion when my son was 8 weeks old (he's now 20 months old-I've had this for a year and a half), headaches, incredible fatigue, weight gain - never lost the baby weight and gained more, low back pain-constant dull achiness, high blood pressure-mine's always been very low, incredible moodiness (I threw a carseat at my guy), huge depression swings-got a new anti-depressant, anxiety attacks, horrid cramping... The only good thing was no periods.
We decided to have them take the Mirena out so I can be "me" again. We decided that having what could have been a baby sticking around inside of me was unacceptable. I just hope I can be fertile again as I'm already 40 and we might want another.
Thanks again for helping me confirm that it's not all in my head!!!

OMG! I had Mirena put in Nov. 2007. Recently I had pain enough and spotting right after my period. I went in and during the exam my new ob said she could not feel or see it! I had a ultrasound which showed a cyst on my ovary that burst causing the pain but NO MIRENA! on May 4th. The OB said that I must have past it and she could not do anything until I started again. I started and contacted my previous OB (who put it in) and the nurse was stunned! She said they just don't fall out. I had an xray today and we found it......in my stomach lining! The OB isn't worried that about it but everyone I talk to wonders how it will keep from moving on around! The nurse said it would take major surgery now to remove the Mirena from my stomach. How does this go through the uterus lining? Are there holes in my uterus and stomach? How could this not be concerning to my previous OB? I have called the 888# on the back of the Mirena brochure and reported adverse side effects that the operator highly suggested to surgically remove the Mirena. I asked if they would pay for the removal but she gave no response. Of course with tough times we don't have the money for such a surgery but my husband and I are worried about further complications this may create. After reading many of these I know now where my mood swings and irritations come from-my poor husband, 8 yr old and 1 1/2 yr old!
DO NOT GET AN IUD IF YOU DO NOT NEED TOO. BEWARE!!!

I am a 44-yr old woman. I went to my dermatologist for treatment of what I thought was an acne cyst on my chin. After 3 injections of Kenalog, and one month after the last one, I am left with atrophy; a severe 'dent' in my chin. I'm wondering if it will go away or if its permanent. I am going to seek legal advice!!!

I have had my Mirena in for about a month now give or take a day or two. And I hate it! The day I had it put in my doctor said I could use a tampon. Worst pain ever and that includes child birth. Since then I have been to the ER over a pain by my left and right hip bones. They brushed it off. It continued, they finally looked into it with an ultrasound and it turns out I have a cyst on my left ovary. I knew that could happen. But the headaches are unreal and the pain in my hip area is so bad that my doctor actually prescribed me 800mg ibuprofen. I want it taken out but knowing that I am so young and that I specifically went to this doctor because he offered it I am afraid they will try to get me to keep it in. Someone please help!

PERFORATED MY UTERUS --- The placement of the Mirena was extremely painful. I could barely drive afterwards. I was sure that something was wrong, but the doctor assured me that everything was fine. I breastfed my son for a year (I had it placed 6 weeks post-partem) which is why I had it placed in the first place. It was considered safe for breastfeeding mothers (please research side-effects of the active hormone it releases on infants. We now know why our 13 month old has had respiratory issues since he was 5 months old). Over the year, I had radial stabbing pains up my back and down my legs. It hurt during sex. At my year check up, I asked the doctor to remove it, but he could not find the strings to remove it. After an x-ray confirmed that it was still in my abdomen, he scheduled a hystoscope to find it and remove it (he assumed that it was still in my uterus). During the procedure, he could not find the Mirena in my uterus and had to perform emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove it from MY ABDOMEN. It had PERFORATED MY UTERUS. My husband and I now know of 4 women that this has happened to just by telling people our story. WE LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN!!!! THE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS ARE UNDER REPORTED!!! PLEASE INFORM YOURSELF BEFORE GETTING THIS DEVICE.

It was a hard first 3months when I got it but everyone told me to wait it out wait it out it will be okay..So I did so and ended up loving it..
I had NO periods which was GREAT.Best part.lol
But...
Now i'm having cyst on my ovaries bigger than baseballs.=[ They're so painful..WORSE than child birth so it's useless to have this in if it's gonna be worse than having a kid.
I'm getting mine taken out tomorrow.
IT HURT LIKE HELLLL PUTTING IT IN HOPEFULLY IT DON'T HURT TAKING IT OUT.

I am a perimenopausal woman who had Mirena put in 3 years ago for hemorrhagic bleeding (previous history of endometriosis). It was an extremely difficult insertion procedure, but eventually my doc was successful. I am finally period-free after about 6 months of erratic bleeding. Other than a diminished sex drive, I haven't noticed any side effects. I did develop a cyst on my ovary, which is being monitored. I think I am just so happy to be rid of the bleeding and severe cramping. I am surprised to learn that you can remove Mirena on your own. My doc accidentally cut the strings too short, so I can't even feel the ends. I just had an appt. with her, and she can't feel them either. I am nervous because in 2 years, I should have the Mirena removed. Our goal was to try to get me through menopause, so I wouldn't need to replace Mirena. Anyway, the doc told me that I may have to go to the operating room ultimately to have it removed or I can just leave it in there for the rest of my life. Does anyone know if you absolutely have to remove Mirena? Is it dangerous to leave it in there?

I've had the Mirena since June 2008. I have NOT STOPPED bleeding since then!! After 3 months, the doctor told me that my body probably needs more time to adjust, after 5 months the manufacturer told me to allow 6 months for my body to adjust, and now 7 1/2 months later I'm still bleeding!! I had an ultra sound last week and the doctor claims all seems normal. HOWEVER...I now have a 6 cm cyst on my ovary...and the doctor (who is not concerned!) told me that it is from the Mirena, but not necessarily bad! What? Following the ultrasound, I experienced (and still am experiencing) extremely heavy bleeding (w/a lot of clotting...sorry, I know that's gross!). Nobody (except me) seems concerned!! She wants me to come back in 6 - 8 weeks to have another ultrasound to see if the cyst is growing!! HUH? I'm making an appointment to have this crazy thing removed. I came upon this site hoping to find some information on Mirena lawsuits...If I have a 6 cm cyst on my ovary, I suspect I am going to have additional problems going forward.
I, too, experienced mood swings (depression), but thought it was just a result of my frustrations! Other effects: Blurry vision, Cramps, and these 'ice pick like' stabbing headache pains! (Maybe that's a migraine, but I've never had a Migraine before, so I don't know!)

32, mother of twins, had Mirena inserted first week of January 2009. Bad acne first 6 months on face, neck, and back. Good news was I hadn't had a period since February 2009 outside of spotting for 3 days as I used to bleed so heavily I'd get anemic. Outside of that I felt things were fine until 2-3 weeks ago. I got my first full-blown sinus infection. With it a headache that never went away even though I went completely through my antibiotics and cleared up the sinusitis. Then came the backache. I had to stop exercising thinking that was the cause. It would get so bad I would not be able to sit. Then came the nausea. I started googling up my symptoms, and made sure to list everything I was taking - even internally. Ta-da. Loads of people with similar problems, and some of them a lot worse. I really wanted Mirena to work, but I immediately called the doctor to get it out ASAP. That was yesterday, and the backache is being caused by a 2cm cyst on my right ovary - I've never had one to my knowledge, and if I have, it's never bothered me before this. After the Mirena came out, I didn't realize how bloated I was feeling! The headaches have stopped. The cyst should go away in about 8 weeks! DEFINITELY not right for everyone!
