Like so many of you, I Googled "tissue atrophy" and have had the very same experience that you have had with Kenalog. I received a shot in late February of 08, shortly after I noticed severe bruising, which eventually turned into the atrophy I now have. I have taken pictures of it for the past several months...and now, 6 months later it is much worse...deeper and darker in color. Is anyone else having discoloration? Mine is a dark purple-red.
I AM PURSUING a lawsuit against the nurse that injected me because I was absolutely not warned of the side-effects...and now have had to suffer with this hole in my side.
It bothers me...and no one would understand unless this had happened to them I suppose. In addition, I received a second opinion and was told the atrophy was permanent...can anyone else confirm this?
I've also noticed other severe menstrual and emotional side-effects...this stuff can stay in your system for a long time.

When I first had mirena put in I bled for 6 weeks straight. I called my doctor and they told me it was normal. Since then I have had bloating, intense cramping, ovarian cysts (that painfully burst), NO interest in sex, vaginal discharge, etc. It is nice to not have to worry about taking a pill everyday or getting depo shots, but I'm not so sure its worth it.

I had the Mirena put in March of 2005 and I thought I loved it. UNTIL...... I started doing some research. I have had cysts on my ovaries since January of 2006 and questionable lumps in my breasts, very fatigue, very little sex drive, weight gain (typically weighing 108 I now weigh 122) and head aches every day. I always had an excuse until one day a light bulb went off it has to be the MIRENA. So I researched the side effects of MIRENA and behold I found everything I was experiencing listed about - buyer beware type thing. I had the MIRENA removed today. The cysts on my ovaries are about 2cm big and the lump is about 6cm big - I pray that having this thing out of me will resolve all of the problems I have had. I will keep you posted.

has anyone NOT experienced complications with acne? And for those who have, how bad on a scale of 1-5? (I really should have asked these questions before I got this thing put in...)

I started on Estrostep 4 months ago. I had been on it about 6 years ago but stopped taking it when my husband and I started our family. After my second child, I was debating BC methods. Four mos ago, I went to the ER with a ruptured ovarian cyst. Tests showed additional cysts so my doctor recommended I go on the pill to prevent/control new cysts. I started Estrostep and for the first 3 months, I had really painful cramping and my period arrived a week earlier than it was supposed to. I've also noticed that my irritable bowel syndrome (which had been controlled for 8 years) has flared up. I'm having panic attacks and just general anxiety... can't help but wonder if the pill is causing some of this.

I went to this web site because I want to help my wife. She's been on Jolessa for 8 weeks now. As of this week, her heart has been "fluttering" for lack of a better word. She went to the ER room and they said basically that nothing's wrong with her but she is experiencing premature ventricular contractions (PVC's) which are not dangerous (according to the doctors). She asked the doc's if she should stop taking Jolessa and of course they said,"no."
We're wondering if anyone else is experiencing this feeling with this junk? My wife is 38 years old, healthy, never had heart problems or disorders. As of the past few weeks though, she's been feeling down in the dumps, sluggish and has a slight mode change.
If anyone is experiencing a change in heart rhythm, since taking Jolessa, please post it here. Thank you.

My 11 year old niece has developed (fibroid?) cysts in her breasts, and they say one is the size of a golf ball. She and her sister had said they really didn't think they had had any side effects from the Gardasil, and of course, the doctors say there is no connection. However, she has always been healthy, and these have only developed AFTER the administration of Gardasil.
How many must be harmed before the FDA stands up to the greed of Pharmaceutical companies and all of their human experiments?

Hi I am 35 and had the Mirena put in after I had my first baby and it was in for 1 year.....But I had the Mirena taken out about a month ago (there is no pain at all in taking it out)....within days my mood was better, I had numbness in hands and feet and that is almost completely gone....the pain in my side is gone....a month before I had it out I was told after my yearly I had Yeast Infection, Abnormal cells so I would need a biopsy and because of the pain in my side (and having the Mirena in a year) she did an ultrasound. I had a cyst....so I just went back for a recheck...cyst is gone, abnormal cells after biopsy are not abnormal....I did get another yeast infection (prior to Mirena I have never had a yeast infection) and I had 2 vaginal infections when it was in...and have one now....I will be honest it feels like I have toxins coming out of my system...I have had diarrhea once a day for a week and I start sweating even when sitting still...I do not regret for one second having it out....I already feel less bloated...also I had been going to the gym, eating well and gaining weight with the Mirena...I already feel like I have lost some....I will keep you posted....My friend had it in 4 years and she just had it out also....she had cysts, pain, bloating, weight gain, all the same symptoms.....the day before she had it out she was rushed to the ER for severe back and side pain and looking like she was 8 months pregnant....she has gone through all sorts of testing and everything came back normal....so I hate to say...but the Mirena may have a class action suit some day.....If it had worked it would have been great....but when something is too good to be true....there is probably a reason! Hope this helps you and I will post it out on the board for others!!!! Take Care Ladies! Michelle

A lot of people are complaining of the same symptoms, and saying they are going to get the Mirena out.....can more people update us with the results of having it removed? Did all the symptoms go away?
I've recently had a lot of the same symptoms (basically feeling pregnant--headaches, very tired, mild cramping, bloated, pants very tight around the waste, lower back aches, indigestion, and just a general yucky sick feeling like morning sickness--and wasting money on 2 pregnancy tests so far!), which seem now to have been PMS-related (PMS which lasted about 3 weeks before my period), though I've not had PMS like this since having the Mirena put in, and it's been over a year now. And my periods have been very irregular the whole time. I basically had spotting for about a year, then nothing for like 2 months, then this whole thing followed by a light period lasting 8 days.
I'm thinking about getting it removed, but would like to hear others' experiences with having it removed. Did these symptoms go away??

I just had my 40th birthday and I've had the mirena for a year and two months now. From the beginning I started gaining some weight that I could not shake off. I've always been 125 lbs but I got up to 133 which may not seem like a lot but I was pudgy all around my stomach area. Anyway, I actually thought I was starting to go thru perimenopause. I've been getting anxiety, depression, mood swings, acne, itchy, brain fog, longer periods, ovarian cysts and I saw my primary doctor today and told her I can't take it anymore. She actually told me to consider having the IUD removed. After reading all of these blogs I'm having it removed 8/5/08. I feel better knowing that I'm not going crazy. Thank you Ladies for writing about what's really going on.

I am writing for my 14 year old daughter who was put on YAZ, not for birth control as she is not sexually active but for her mood disorder, which I believe is just being a teenager in general...but her therapist told her that it would help her moods, acne and that it even would help her loose weight! cant stand doctors at this point, have no faith in the system at all. I should have had her read this site because..... since day 2, severe stomach pains, throws up every day. shortness for breath ~ pains in her back and shoulder and down her arm like a heart attack. nose bleeds, headaches and OMG moods ~ cant even express the mood that she has been in for 3 weeks. so last week I take her to the doctor ~ of course a nurse practitioner sees her instead of the doctor that is not in. and asks my 14 year old if she would like prilosec or pepsid or zantac? asks a 14 year old and then offers her naperson and tells her that she should try these along with the YAZ. when I questioned the rational of keeping her on this drug she became defensive and said we should try it out for a couple of months. I allowed her to try this way for 2 days and then said nope no more pills. Just came home from the doctors office where they immediately took blood and is sending her for a sonogram to see if she has any cysts in her ovaries. I am just disgusted with the medical doctors who push pills and pharmaceuticals who don't give a damn but to make money. Will keep my eyes out for the lawsuits now. For camp refund for all the days she has missed for taking this horrible drug. hopefully she will not have any long term problems. will always think of this pill if she does.

I just started my second months on Yaz. My doctor prescribed it due to ovarian cysts. I have not used BCP for almost 10 years. I have now had my period for 8 days. Prior to Yaz I had a period for about 3-4 days, heavy with some bad cramps but then it was over. This is light bleeding but the consistency is like paste and it seems non-stop and its just a pain in the butt. Its effecting my sex life.
On the upside - milder cramps, PMS week was better, less tender breasts, less water retention. So far my sex drive is undiminished. If that is effected, I'll stop taking them. The pharmaceutical companies can go push rope. 10 years ago my doctor swore my decreased libido was all in my head. I quit the BCP and guess what? I was like a kid again. Yes, BCPs are convenient but not at the cost of enjoying sex.

I have been on Tri-Sprintec for 7 years. Over this last year I have noticed my body either skips a month for my period, or I have two periods in 1 month. This month I happened to have two periods in one month and a period starting at different times. Spotting has accrued the last week, and last night at 2 am I woke up crying in pain. I am feeling really depressed, and seem to want to be alone as well. I feel cranky, overwhelmed, my head hurts and my overies. My sister was diagnosed with cysts, and I am wondering if I shouldn't be taking this anymore. A couple of times also in the morning I've headed toward the shower and about blacked out, running back to bed. Is this normal? These side effects have started this year and I have been on it for 7 years? My skin seems normal knowing I also have hypothyroidism. Should I take something else, I have been missing a lot of work, and my doctor doesn't really think nothing is wrong other than taking it some nights at different times. My boobs always feel like they are going to fall off, but better yet I also feel I have gained a lot of weight with it. Going from 110 pound to 140 pounds. Should I be taking something different? If I am off the pill, which I have been my cramps are so horrible, like knives jabbing my insides. I have been crying a lot out of no where, when nothing is that bad, other than whooping doctor bills. Stressed out, and probably on the verge of losing my job over not getting the right help from the right doctor. What do I do? lost of appetite, or some months large appetites, weight gain, weight loss, depressed, angry, mood swings, more than one period in 1 month.

I GOT MIRENA IN ABOUT 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO AND WELL I AM NOW SUFFERING FROM THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT ALL THESE OTHER WOMEN DESCRIBED. I HAVE PAIN THAT COMES AND GOES IN MY ABDOMINAL AREA, I FEEL TIRED ALL THE TIME, IRRITABLE, DEPRESSED, HEADACHES, BAD CONSTIPATION, WEIGHT GAIN, HAIR FALLING OUT, AND BLOATED SO BAD THAT I LOOK LIKE IM 5 MONTHS PREGO. IT SUCKS I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING INSANE TO THE POINT WHERE I CANT EVEN STAND MYSELF, I DON'T KNOW HOW MY HUSBAND DOES IT. OH AND TO TOP IT OFF 1 MONTH 1/2 INTO HAVING IT I HAD TERRIBLE PELVIC PAIN I COULD NOT EVEN WALK, AND SO I WENT TO DR. AND THEY SAID THAT I MIGHT HAVE A CYST SO NOW I HAVE TO GET AN ULTRA SOUND TO C IF IT IS A CYST OR NOT. UP UNTIL TODAY I DIDN'T CONNECT MY SYMPTOMS WITH THE MIRENA EXCEPT FOR WEIGHT GAIN AND THE POSSIBILITY OF CYSTS. THEN I WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND OF MINE THAT WAS CONSIDERING THE MIRENA AS WELL AND SHE MENTIONED IT TO HER AUNT WHO HAD IT AND HER AUNT TOLD HER NOT TO GET IT AND TLD HER HOW THE MIRENA IS THE PORTAL TO HELL. SHE CALLED ME TLD ME ABOUT IT AND WELL THEN I STARTED TO LOOK FOR OTHER WOMEN'S EXPERIENCES AND THAT IS HOW I CAME ONTO THIS PAGE, AND OTHERS ALL WITH NOTHING BUT THE SAME COMPLAINS. MAYBE 1 OR 2 GOOD EXPERIENCES BUT THE REST WERE BAD. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON 7-21-08 TO HAVE IT REMOVED AND GET BACK ON THE PILL THAT I WAS TAKING FOR ALMOST 9 YRS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH. I CANT WAIT FOR MONDAY TO COME. I WILL LET U ALL KNOW HOW I FEEL AND HOW MY LIFE CHANGES AFTER I GET IT REMOVED. UNTIL THEN ALL I CAN SAY IS DON'T GET MIRENA ITS THE PORTAL SO HELL!!!

My body must not be shaped properly for this thing because even after 6 months it still slides out partway all the time. I had to tie it in a knot to get it to stay in for more than 2 minutes. that aside, I had many of the side effects everyone else is talking about:
extreme anxiety. weird tingling in my arms and feet and 'on edge' all the time. waking in the night with horrible panic attacks and feeling sick to my stomach. so bad that I'd be afraid to go back to sleep for fear I may not wake up. I can't even describe how anxious I was. It was like I was outside of my own body all the time. I'd have to wiggle my toes or pinch my arms at times to make sure they still moved. In the night I'd wake up and intentionally wake up hubby or a kid just to know that I still existed.
Total bitch. I even hated being around myself. the sound of someone eating would irritate me so bad I'd have to leave the room before i hit someone or broke something.
totally down in the dumps. not suicidal, but didn't find joy in anything. I didn't want to do anything, yet felt bored all the time.
headaches non stop. Literally had 2-4 headaches every single day for 3-4 months. Not one day without. went to bed with a headache, woke in the night with a headache, woke in the morning with one... painkillers would take off the edge, but not eliminate it.
I seriously was terrified I was going mentally insane.
I had used the pill years ago with no side effects. I've been off nuvaring for 6 months now and don't know what to do because I have problems with cysts (and possible endo.) and their 'solution' is hormonal contraceptives.
I was better almost immediately after stopping the nuvaring. the headaches lingered for a bit more, but the rest disappeared.

I had my mirena coil fitted at my 8 week post-partum check after my second child, this was feb 07. I was breast feeding until july so didn't resume periods until last aug. When they did resume they were so heavy blood would drip onto the floor - and occurred every 2 weeks without fail. I was assured this would settle down, but by April this year I'd had enough. I was referred for a scan to check for cysts - nothing, then sent to a gynecologist who decided to remove the coil...except she couldn't find it. Another scan showed it was not there and I'd probably expelled it, but I had to have an abdominal x-ray just in case. Two weeks ago I finally got the results - my uterus has been perforated and the coil now lies in my abdominal cavity just near my left hip. I am in constant discomfort, and sometimes searing pain (I had to miss work today because the pain was so bad it made me sick) Yet I have to wait a full 2 months to have the operation under general anesthetic to remove the damn thing. I just want it out of me, and am unclear as to whether it can do any further damage. The consultant told me they can fit a new one whilst I'm under, but I'm having serious doubts as to whether I want another one. Interestingly I've steadily put on 4 - 5lbs since October but yet haven't changed my lifestyle at all.

Possible ovarian cancer triggered by Yasmin.
You need to know this:
The present study suggests that circulating androgens and SHBG levels are *not* strongly associated with ovarian cancer risk,
although levels of fT may be associated with an increased risk among women diagnosed at relatively young age.
Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2007 Jan;16(1):23-9
Free testosterone (fT)
Increased levels of estrogen stimulate ***increased levels of testosterone***and androgen (increased body hair).
Unlike all the other BC pills...
"Yasmin birth control pill is different than other traditional combined oral contraceptives.
Though it is combined of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (drsp), which has the unique properties than other progestin based pills available in the market. In other combined pills,
***progesin is derived from testosterone***
whereas in Yasmin with drsp, progestin is derived from spironolactone."
We need progesin to come from testosterone to prevent ovarian cancer. We have to LOWER testosterone.
If you have dry eyes...heads up! And get a pelvic ultrasound. If it shows cysts...while most are benign and common...some are NOT.

Well Hello everyone. I am glad I came across this site, because I thought I was going crazy...I am 35 and just had my first child March 2007. I have had the Mirena for a year now. I went to the Dr. a few weeks ago and told her I was feeling sharp pains once and a while, but other than that I felt fine. She ordered an ultra sound and they found some small cysts...so I go back for a recheck 6 weeks from that date to see if it's gone away?? That did not make sense to me....she said I also had a yeast infection (which I have never had), and pre-cancerous cells which she is biopsying next week. What I thought was completely unrelated was my back pain-sharp siatica pains and my numbness in legs, feet, arms, and hands...my friend told me I should see a neurologist...and I almost started down that road....until now...I think I will have the Mirena out first and see what happens. I also have some twitching in my fingers. I will let you know how I feel after it's out. Oh and Mood Swings....I always have this feeling that I don't know what to do....everything seems like too much!

Well I just started 2 days ago taking this BC and I so far have none of the symptoms most of the ladies are stating here. I will start keeping a journal to track my symptoms if they should start.
Now the 1st day of taking the pill I did have a headache but Im very sensitive to salt and didn't drink much water that day so I can not say it was the BC pills. Im excited to be on these BC pills because my periods were HORRIBLE. I just want to wait for menopause and keep my body parts. I also have cysts on both my ovaries.
I m just hoping this will work for me.

I was just discharged from the hospital on Saturday. I had been taking Yasmin for almost two years now and until recently, had no problems. Last Wednesday I went to the ER for severe pain and inability to breath with my left lung. They admitted me after finding a blood clot in the right, as a result of Yasmin! Turns out, I had pneumonia in the left and since I had no symptoms that the clot was there, the pneumonia saved my life! I too had to take those fun Lovenox shots in the stomach and now I'm on Coumadin for 6 months. I am 29 years old, never smoked a day in my life. I do not drink, I am a healthy weight and I work out regularly. I do not have a history of blood clots in the family. How could this happen especially with a drug my doctors told me was safe?
With the amount of occurrences, I'm interested in a class action lawsuit as well. I will never take a birth control pill again EVER.

Please let me know if a class-action lawsuit is ever filed against this Pharm Co because I will file a suit to get this dangerous drug off the market. Yasmin/Yaz almost took my life in January 08. My OB/GYN put me on Yaz in Oct 07 for bad periods and cysts on my overies. Within a month my entire personality changed and I started losing my hair. I experienced a complete loss of sex drive, became depressed and was either constanting crying or raging at someone. However, my adult acne did clear up. On 1/27/08 I experienced extreme pain in my calf that moved up to my thigh within 48 hrs. I went to the ER and was told that no only did I a condition called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombisis-blood clot) in my leg but that the clot had broken off and moved into both of my lungs and I had bi-lateral pulmonary embolism. I can't even describe how incredibly painful this was. I was admitted into the hospital for 1 week and was put on powerful blood thinners, which I will be on for about a year. It's now been nearly 6 months since I was diagnosed and the DVT and it is still in my uppper thigh. But am grateful to be alive. If you would like to contact me I would be glad to answer any questions regarding this situation and my email addy is ****** PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YAZ OR YASMIN OR LET ANYONE IN YOUR FAMILY TAKE THIS MED, IT COULD KILL YOU.

Well to let everyone know who is reading this site, if you have a Mirena GET IT OUT ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!! Just three weeks ago I had the mirena in for a year and a half and about three month after having it put in I began to lose weight rapidly over a 6-7 month period I had lost over 40 pounds was having diarrhea, hair loss, hands trembling, pulse rate above 120 at resting and night sweats. I had been to over 5 doctors including my GYN and none of them thought that it was related to the Mirena. I had started having excruciating pain in my right lower pelvic area and had been to see my GYN over 5 times in a month and a half and he just kept saying it was cysts on my ovary. I finally came to the point of despair. I could not stand the pain anymore and called the GYN office and saw a nurse practitioner who took out my Mirena and did an ultrasound and come to find out I was 7-8 weeks pregnant with my fallopian tube about to rupture and I was about to bleed to death I was taken to surgery within 2 hours and I had to have my right fallopian tube removed. I hope NO one has to get to this point. If you have the Mirena and you are experiencing any unusual side effects have it removed. YOU know your body better than anyone! SO PLEASE DO NOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this article on treating the dimpling/cutaneous atrophy effects of Kenalog with saline injections. Very good cosmetic effect.
1: Dermatol Surg. 2005 Oct;31(10):1340-3.
Treatment of local, persistent cutaneous atrophy following corticosteroid injection with normal saline infiltration.
Shumaker PR, Rao J, Goldman MP.
Dermatology Department, Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA, USA.
BACKGROUND: Injections of corticosteroids are commonly used for a variety a dermatologic conditions but may cause local, persistent cutaneous atrophy, with few therapeutic options. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of bacteriostatic normal saline infiltration on the improvement of corticosteroid-induced cutaneous atrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients with corticosteroid-induced atrophy of the skin, two caused by acneiform cysts and one from intramuscular steroid injection, were treated with weekly injections of normal saline directly into the atrophic site. The patients were seen on weekly follow-up visits, and improvement was documented. RESULTS: All four patients demonstrated complete resolution of skin atrophy and restoration of surface contour within 4 to 8 weeks of initial presentation. Injected volumes of normal saline ranged from 5 to 20 cm(3) per treatment session and three to six weekly treatments. The patients were completely satisfied with these results. CONCLUSION: Normal saline infiltration offers a safe, tolerable, relatively rapid, and effective treatment for local, persistent corticosteroid-induced atrophy.
