I had the Mirena for almost 7 years. I have to say I really liked the convenience of not having to worry about birth control or my period. I had very minimal side effects of course the cramping when the device was first put in and the first time I got it, the string was a little too long so I could feel it, but I went back in & the nurse cut it and I never really felt if after that. When I had the device taken out, it was painful, but it was because it had gone in too far. I really liked the Mirena I kind of regret taking it out. The reason I took it out was because I wanted something more permanent and I was having trouble with my skin breaking out and I was being told that hormones where causing my breakouts. So I am now on a non hormonal birth control which is permanent (Essure) but I have to deal with period and cramps again, and my face is breaking out a lot worse...I guess like with other birth controls everyone reacts differently. Before the Mirena I used the Depo shot for a couple of years until my period became irregular and then I stopped birth control for awhile and it took me about a year to become pregnant with my son. Before Depo I tried pills (Ortho-Evra or something like that) my skin cleared up but I gained about 15 pounds in just one month...so I guess it's a trial and error process which is unfortunate for those of you experience severe side effects...too bad there is not some kind of test a person could take to determine which birth control would be better suited for their body

I hate Mirena!! I went right from the DEPO shot to MIRENA and thought it didn't have any side effects. I did horrible on the shot, gaining a lot of weight and very very MOODY to where i wanted to crawl out of my skin. I've had Mirena for almost a year now, and I totally hate it. JUST LIKE YOU, ive gained weight in my stomach to where i look 5 months pregnant, and my boobs went from a smaller d size to a large DD and the DD don't fit. When i have a shirt on they look even bigger, and from my head to my boobs, not seeing the lower portions of my body you would think i was very obese. I also have hypothyroidism, and the mirena does not help with the hard time losing weight. But i will tell you one thing, for about 5 months of my life, when my son was about 1, i was off birth control. My body did so well, i lost a lot of weight and i was never bloated. i felt great about my self. birth control is horrible for anyones body, and i have really thought about just using condoms and risk getting pregnant. i have been with the same man for 2 yrs and do not plan on being with anyone else. so i made the decision to not be on birth control. every time i have sex i get severe cramping, and i have such a low sex drive i can hardly get excited. I HATE MIRENA!! AND I WANT THIS THING OUT OF ME!!! IM GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE! LOL

I have been taking depo for about a year and half now and 3 months ago i started having horrible GI problems. I have gotten to a point where i can't eat or be away form the bathroom for more than 30 mins. i was put in the hospital and ran EVERY test possible for GI problems and every test showed nothing. my internal medicine doctor suggested going off the depo and see if it makes me feel better. so i plan on it but for now i have to let the deo run its course. after reading this website I found out that less than 1% can have the problems i have been having so i plan on going off it. so if you are on the depo shot and are having GI problems then depo may be the problem

I got my mirena in April 2008 and loved it at first. Before getting mirena i tried the depo shot and had my period for the 3 months i was on it and became anemic so i was really happy when my period finally stopped after getting mirena. The insertion was extremely painful even though i was given pills the day before to dilate me. I vomited during the insertion and almost passed out but is probably just because i had never had a kid before so they had to dilate me a lot. I had severe cramping for the rest of the day and minor cramping for about a week after. After about two weeks i started getting some of the normal symptoms listed in the mirena information.. bloating, mood swings, depression. None of them were severe so it wasn't that big of a deal but i've also had a major lack of sex drive, some hair loss, and periods that last about 3 weeks. About 2 months ago i started having extreme pain during sex. Even if my boyfriend stops immediately i can't stand up straight for a couple days after and have to walk kind of hunched over and even that is terribly painful. I thinks it's time i look into getting it removed.

I'm 22 years old and I've been taking Loestrin since the end of February. I haven't had any real severe side affects from it. It's my first time on birth control and I was very weary about getting on the pill all together. I do notice my period is different. Sometimes I'm really heavy for 5 or 6 days and sometimes I don't see any blood. I don't notice much nausea from it and I was really concerned about that before I starting taking it. I do notice my libido is down and I don't have much energy. I need to switch off of this pill because it's not in my price range. I'm trying to find a pill that was actually kind of similar to it. A pill that was low in hormones more particularly. Does anyone have any suggests?

Well, I just started the pill tonight, I read through a bunch of the comments, and I sort of wished I would have looked this pill up before actually choosing this one. {Right now I'm just hot, and a bit drowsy but I highly doubt that is from the pill since I just started a couple of hours ago} However, I am prepared (semi-prepared) to stick it out and see how my body takes to it. When I was 18, 19 i took the Depo shot because my doctor thought with college starting that it would be my best bet. I miss 1-2 days/mth for my serious menstrual problems; throwing up, migraines, severe cramps where I either faint or am unable to walk, and of course fevers, etc..If i was not drugged up I probably would just cry for days and days and not sleep. However I didn't like the Depo shot much, besides getting pregnant was not the issue since I wasn't sexually active anyway. A couple years later, after missing tons of classes/month because of my period, and even getting 2 incomplete 1 semester, I decided to try another pill, Im not sure the name but it caused my appetite to change, I am only 4'11,100lbs. I have a huge appetite but fast metabolism so losing weight is not an option for me. I am praying that everything works out with this pill because now at age 24, I am sexually active and not trying to have children for at least 2 or 3 years..and even more, I am switching jobs and can not afford to finish my masters and have a job that doesn't really mind me missing time so often. So if anyone else has any side effects please post so I know what else may be normal or abnormal. Thanks in advance (and sorry for the life story lol)

Well now it all makes sense! I am just finishing my 2nd week on Femcon FE and I couldn't understand why my breasts hurt so much...now I get it! I was on the depo shot for 2 years and LOVED it, no migraines, no periods...nothing. But because of my age and family history of osteoporosis I had to go off of it. Another doctor in my doctor's practice put me on the femcon because after not having my period for 2 years I got it really bad twice for a week in 3 weeks time. I can't go back on Yasmin because of the migraines, however besides the tenderness issue (which sucks if you have to run/walk fast anywhere), and I'm convinced weight gain, all of the sudden nothing fits. I'm not having the bleeding everyone else seems to be. But when I go for my annual in a week, I am going to definitely ask for something else after being on BC for the last 12 years this has to be the worst.

I took depo for a total of 6 months (1 shot/3 months) and gained 90 lbs in the first month. I started having a period only one every 3 months. I talked to my doctor and she said that Depo would not cause the weight gain, but my eating habits did not change, nor my daily activities. This was about 11 years ago. Since then, I have been unable to lose the weight, my periods are VERY inconsistent. I might have one every month, twice a month, or go for a year between. I also very with how much I bleed during them, sometimes very light, no side effects, sometimes very heavy, with cramping, nausea, etc. Sometimes on the months when I do not have a period, I get a "morning sickness" type illness, and I end up missing 1-2 days of work because of it. After 11 years of not taking any kind of BC and I am still not back to a normal cycle, I would avoid taking Depo at all costs. I was a healthy 17 year old before taking Depo, and now I am an "Obese" 28 year old because of Depo.

This site has been a god send. I had mine placed 2 weeks ago and its been horrible. I've been telling myself that everything is going to be fine, but its hard to believe that. Getting it put in put me in tremendous pain. I could barely walk and i had to work a 10 hour shift an hour later. After 2 days the pain went away but i started to notice random bouts of depression. Ive been a totally different person, Im happy and laughing one minute and the next im in tears over nothing! What made things worse was I was starting to feel nervous and shaky on top of wanting to cry all the time. I figured it had to do with Mirena because ive felt this way once before and that was when i tried the depo shot. Within the last few days ive noticed an unusual discharge and itching. Ive been thinking it might be a yeast infection but i have never had one. Its just one more thing im contributing to Mirena. I dont want to get it removed because its nice not worrying about pills or condoms but at the same time I think Mirena is making me crazy. Reading these posts really helped me regain some of my sanity. Ive also heard from many people who used to have an IUD that as soon as they had theirs removed they got pregnant. I know to use condoms but i dont trust them, accidents happen.

So I got my IUD in April 2008 It was great at first just a little cramping for a few days and that was all. However it all went down the toilet in July. My periods even though light last for 3 weeks! I live with a constant period. I can't even enjoy my life or my job. I'm nauseated 24/7 It started off on the occasion now I'm just sick all the time. I go to the doctors and all they keep wanting to do is pump me with anti-nausea medicine. I feel like I'm almost crazy. This past weekend was really bad. I can't get off my couch without feeling like Im going to die. I can't go shopping I can't do anything. Not to mention all the anxiety attacks brought on by extreme nausea by doing everyday things like driving a car, shopping, anything. I never had an anxiety attack and I'm a soldier! I just can't take it anymore It's got to go. I would never recommend this I've had the Depo shot and it was NEVER this bad. Pain and cramping, extreme nausea, bloating, Is not worth it. I hope getting this removed will solve these problems I've been having

I got mirena in June, I was on the depo shot right before the mirena but had put on 20 pounds so decided to go with mirena. I think it hurt like hell putting it in, but after like two days it was okay. I have never bled with the mirena, but my periods were already gone anyways b/c of the depo shot. I am having a problem with weight still. I don't know if it is b/c the depo is still in my system or if the mirena is contributing. Other than that it works pretty good for me. The thing that scares me is that It seems like a lot of people didn't have bad symptoms until later on. Should I just remove it now and save myself from all that?

Just had Mirena inserted in the middle of June 2008. I haven't decided what to think about it yet. I screamed when it was inserted as I have not had any kids yet. Was in severe pain for about a week. And now I have on and off bad pelvic pain, some occasional nausea. The only other thing I noticed is sore muscles and lack of energy. I am lucky I have no period so far. I got off the depo shot after being on it too long and switched to Mirena right away. As for now I am staying on it unless things get worse.

I was on the Depo shot for a while then my hair started falling out! I switched to Desogen and now i have absolutely no sex drive what so ever. I mean when I say no sex drive I mean NONE. When me and my boyfriend so have sex it's like it hurts so bad. Then I have this constant discharge all the time. I Don't know what to do. I would love to come off of it and see a regular doctor but I don't have medical insurance. I hate all hormonal birth control methods..

I am 30 years old and have been put on Depo Lupron after a laproscopy to help with endometriosis. I am 2 months into a 6 month course (one shot every 3 months) of Depo Lupron and my life has drastically changed. I started feeling life altering hot flashes and night sweats two days after the first shot and nearly drown myself in sweat 24 hours a day. I experienced a little postpardum depression after giving birth 6 years ago but have found myself sunk into a sinking hole of depression and anger like I've never felt before. I bawl at McDonald's commercials and become enraged if the dishwasher isn't loaded properly! I am ecstatic one minute and severely depressed the next. I have even had thought of suicide since being on this shot. I am normally a very outgoing, athletic, cheerful, happy person - but since taking this shot, I have become a stanger in my own head. I tell my family all the time that I need to "go stick my head in the freezer" to cool off because of the horrific hot flashes. I have to carry a handheld fan with me 24 hours a day and sleep with ice packs to keep cool. Since the shot started 2 months ago, I have lost all sexual drive, am thoroughly exhausted by 9am and find myself crying at my desk at work by late afternoon because I am so tired. My family thinks I am going crazy and I've never fought more with my husband. My daughter has gone to grandma's for awhile because I'm just so tired and irritable that I feel like an awful mother. Migraines have also come full circle since the onset of the shot as well as blurred vision and shaky hands. I'm a little achy throughout the as well. I know that everyone responds to medication differently, but I'm finding a lot of people with the same side effects as myself and have to wonder why the doctors don't warn patients about these types of problems before prescribing medications such as Depo Lupron. I don't think I'll be going back for the second shot. Could it get any worse?

I have been on Femcon since April and I have not had a period since taking the pill. I have had several pregnancy tests done, all coming back negative. No relief coming from my obgyn either. I was told to come back in another 2 months if i still don't start a cycle. Has anyone else lost or missed periods due to this pill? I just had a baby in January, but up until i took this pill, my periods were fine, even on the days i used to have them before getting pregnant? Any tips, or ideas?? I have also been throwing up and having sharp, not sore but, sharp stabbing pains in my left breast...which i told my doc about only to hear that it was related to not having a period!?!?!?!?!?! Help!!!

Are any of you actually taking this pill AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY? I'm just wondering because I'm going on to my 3rd month on Loestrin 24 and I take my pill the same time every day, get my period on time, and have had no problems what so ever...

I was on the Depo shot for almost 2 1/2 years after I had my second child. I always thought that my bad attitude and mood swings was because of all of the stress that I was under with being a single parent of 2 little kids. I was due to get the shot again in January and I didn't get it, at first because I didn't have the money for it at the time, but then I started to realize that I was in such a better mood. I was actually happy and had the energy to play with my kids. I did love not having a period, but I don't mind having one now that I'm actually able to enjoy spending time with my kids. I've been off of the shot for about 4 months now and just now had a period. It has lasted for over a week now and I'm not sure when it is going to stop. Right now I'm in the process of trying to find another form of birth control, but I'm not sure what to try because I also have endometriosis so I need something that will help with that. My doctor wants me to try the Nuvaring, but after I've read all of the complaints on here, I'm not sure I want to try it at all. And I was trying to lose weight, but I discovered that it was just about impossible while being on the shot because I had such a huge appetite. I've been eating less now and have lost a few pounds already. I also had a drastic loss of sex drive while on the shot. I always thought that the reason sex was so painful for me was because of the endometriosis, but since I've been off of the shot, I've been able to actually enjoy sex again, with no pain. I'm almost afraid to try any other birth control because I do not want to go back to being the person that I was when I was on the Depo shot.

I have been on Loestrin for almost a month now and so far I like it. I was on the depo shot since 2005 and I had gained 25 pounds, so I felt it was time for a change. The only upside to the Depo was that I never got a period, but I felt that I'd rather lose weight and deal with the bleeding. I just started the brown iron pills yesterday and woke up with spotting this morning; so far so good, my body has seemed to adjust fine. I have noticed that I have been in a much better mood and the bloating I had experienced almost every day with the Depo is completely gone. I would defiantly recommend this pill to others, but I would suggest taking the pill at the same time every day, give or take a few minutes, and to take it in the morning with plenty of water. To me, taking this pill early in the day gives your body time to react and adjust comfortably.

I am 24 and was on "the shot" for 2 1/2 years, I always had problems with spotting and felt really depressed (would cry easily, very sensitive). I was pretty much bleeding daily but didn't do anything about it. I was really out of touch with reality - it was really alarming when my doctor said casually that I should do a bone density test because taking it for more than 2 years could decrease your bone mass. What caused my to get off of the shot was that my provider quit carrying it in their office and not realizing it when I set up an appt. I was to late to get it...etc. I felt especially depressed after that. Finally after a several months of not being on it, I started to feel back to normal. This was just my personal experience and I would not recommend using depo.

First of all, Yaz and yazmin are two diff pills, yaz was approved a few years after yazmin b/c it held a lower dose of estrogen.

I am a female who had a bad reaction to ortho and the depo shot. I was turned onto yazmin about 4 years ago because I had bad reactions to the other forms I'd tried. I suffer from depression problems as well, and my doctor said that it tested well among people with my background. I loved it.

Anyhoo, the whole reason I am writing, is because I've noticed a pattern in all of the statements on this website: the women who had bad experiences w/Yaz or Yazmin, had good experiences w/Ortho Tricyclen and vise versa. I just find that so amusing!!!

Thank you for your time,

Mel

I had my Mirena inserted in July, shortly after the birth of my second son. Having Antiphospholipid Syndrome, Type 1 Diabetes, and Lupus, the doctors wanted me off estrogen birth control pills. Not sure if we want a third child, thought Mirena was the way to go. I am 33 and back in the college days I was on the Depo shot and had horrible acne, mood swings, breast tenderness, and nightmares. A few months ago I started noticing the same effects with the Mirena. Nightmares, acne, but most annoying, no sex drive whatsoever, and extreme snappiness to my husband and children! I feel like how you get the week before your period....I feel depressed like that EVERY week....like "blah", can't seem to snap out of feeling blue. Not sure what to do. I wonder if Copper IUD's are any better since the evil progesterone is the bad culprit? I may just try to see if the Rheumy and OB will let me go on B.C. pills for just a couple more years....by then I should know if I want one more baby and if not, then I can get sterilized. My OB did say no one has ever complained to her before about these effects. But, I know simply b/c the Depo Shot, that the things I am feeling are real and from the Mirena and not just a modd disorder.

I have had the iud for about 2 1/2 yrs now. I stopped using the depo shot after being told you should only be on it for a year, thats of coarse after being on it for 4 years! I still don't get periods, but have had several ovarian cysts, bloating, and weight gain (over 20 lbs). Not to mention acne....I noticed in someone else's comments they started getting joint pain like carpel tunnel, I have had the same thing, extremely painful....I have been debating getting it removed, but I'm still trying to find a better alternative first.
