I've been on birth control since my early 20's and now I'm 39. My most current bc was Diane 35 which was not bad. I was scared about the risks of using birth control after the age of 35 so changed to a lower form of birth control-Aviane. Was suppose to have Alesse but was given the generic Aviane. I've gained weight so most likely due to my bad habits, old age due to a lower metabolism. I'm sure I'm at my max weight of 120. I've been feeling horrible in the dressing rooms when I'm trying on clothes and my stomach seems to be more "muffin top" than normal. Also, feel very bloated all the time...thus, a spa rep had asked me how many months I was(might have been the type of top I was wearing but...) I just went on the scale at a gymn I was trying out and to my shock I had gained 10 pounds? I haven't eaten that much different lately...is it Aviane? I think it's time for me to get off bc..

Hello everybody!!
I had a very bad reaction the very first time I took my first YASMIN pil. Well, I took it on a Sunday night at 23h45 and went to bed. 1h00 in the morning I wook up feeling:
-Dizzy,
-My hands and legs heavy
-I had a LOT OF TROUBLE BREATHING/ bad hearth palpitations
-then my whole body started shaking very badly
I felt just horrible, so I called an ambulance. They took me to the hospital and checked everything on me. They told me there was no evidence to say that my reaction was caused by Yasmin. But I am 100% sure, cause I was feeling really healthy and all of a sudden, in 1 hour time I was just feeling horrible. I obviously did not take my 2nd pil….
After recovering, the following week I started with DIANE 35. This time I took 2 pils, but I was feeling very sick (vomiting, could not even eat, etc) all day long so stopped once again.
After talking to different doctors, and seeing that nobody cares… Finally I’ve done some ALLERGY TESTS for YASMIN and DIANE 35. I was just sure that the result would be positive, but I was really surprised when the results showed nothing at all. I just could not understand anything.
I know that my reactions where due to the pils. However the allergy test did not relate my sickness to the pils. Does somebody have an explanation?? Any similar experiences? Do you think that I just cannot take hormone treatments?
Thank you!!!

I was on Diane for 2 years and was told it is not safe to take for more then a year...it should never be taking long term, although I have had great success with it when it came to excess hair growth on the face and belly...its fine hair but still it really bothered me so yes diane does help a lot with that and i never had any problems on it however my doctor just gave me Yasmin and i am reading all these awful things about it it kind of makes me afraid to try it but my doctor told me it is similar to diane 35 and if i did good on that i shouldn't have any issues with yaz....anyone have any good experiences with Yasmin? I wish I could stay on Diane 35 worked soo well...

I was on Yasmin for 2 years and it was 2 years too long! I should have stopped taking it immediately. I experienced EXTREME HAIR LOSS!!!! It started to fall out as soon as I started taking the pill, but I was also coming off Depo Provera and thought it was the Depo causing the hair loss. This happened in 2 different cycles. The first time, A LOT of hair fell out and I was humiliated. After about 6 months, some hair grew back; but my hair was still extremely thin and you could see most if not all of my scalp in strong lighting (outdoors for example). About 8 months later, it fell out again...this time worse than ever because I had about half of the hair I used to. I think I was literally lost 3/4 of my hair this time. Most if the hair loss was on the top of my scalp and every doctor I saw had something different to say. In the beginning stages of the hair loss, they said it was stress. Then when they saw it progress and they realized how much hair I had lost on the top of my scalp, I was told I had female pattern baldness...only no female in my family had ever experienced this before. Finally, I went off the pill and WOW...I HAVE HAIR AGAIN and it is probably close to what I had before I ever lost any of it. Oddly enough, Yasmin is used to prevent hair loss; as it is prescribed for women who have higher testosterone levels...yet it caused me to lose mine. I also gained A LOT of weight on that pill!
I have been off of Yas for about 6 months now and my periods are definitely less than regular. I won't get my period for 3 months and all of a sudden I am getting it every 2 weeks. I also have cysts on my ovaries and I thought I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which can also cause hair loss, but the doctors are quite positive that I don't have PCOS and that it is not what led to the hair loss.
Moral of the story...unless you have to go on a pill that is designed for lowering your testosterone levels (and I recommend Diane 35 if so), do not take Yas! If I ever go on the pill again, I am sticking to something like Alese that is low-dose.

I am 25 and have been taking Yasmin for about a year and a half. I switched to it because it would help my acne breakouts (face and chest/back),
as well as "reduce bloating" according to my doctor.
It did indeed help with helping calm down the PMS mood swings around 'that time of the month'.
However, especially in the last few months, I have noticed a very dramatic decrease in my libido and bouts of being down or 'blue' aka depression-like symptoms, as well as breast tenderness. Also strangely enough, one of the side effects listed on the info sheet claims it can cause bloating. So who do I believe? This is my point exactly...
Ladies, take 5 minutes and CAREFULLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that come inside the box of your Yasmin pills. When you do, you might be surprised by what you find, like I was.
I have been on several types of birth control since I was about 17, from Tri-cyclen, to Diane-35 and others.
What the doctors and pharmaceutical companies DON'T tell us, is that female sex hormones can cause cancer. This is literally written in the fine print on the info you get with your pills. It's there you just have to look for it.
Think about it... these companies get paid masses of money to keep you ignorant and thinking that there is little to no risk of taking birth control pills. They won't get paid if millions of women stop taking their doses.
Even my mom, who was taking hormones to balance out her menopausal issues, has a increased risk of cancer now due to taking hormones.
Just research it a little bit, google it and you will see.
Birth control pills can have permanent effects, and even temporary effects that cause you to feel miserable.
This is your life, your health, and we have to be aware of what we are putting in our bodies!!!!!!
Is gaining 5 lbs or having a few pimples really worth the risk of depression and the possibility of cancer??
I am not extremest, that is, I am not saying that no females should take birthcontrol pills. I understand there will always be a demand.
But this forum is important because it let's us share our worries. I am worried for myself (will these hormones contribute to breast cancer issues later in life?), and I am worried for all the girls out there who want the benefits of a pill (clear skin, regular periods) don't know that the side effects can be life threatening.
Educate yourself!! , don't believe everything the drug companies tell you, and what the doctors DO NOT tell you.
Remember, YOU are the only expert on YOU!

Amanda I think we should all keep an open mind. As women we know our bodies and definitely know when something is not right. I have been a ballet dancer for almost 17 yrs. I was young, happy, very active and when i was 19 I started Yasmin to regulate my period. My first three cycles were the worst, I am talking about nausea, headaches, tiredness(did not feel like dancing anymore was just too tired),vaginal dryness that lead to yeast infections terrible mood swings right down to bloating and fatigue. However after the first three months my body adjusted nicely and i was fine. I had been on Yasmin for 2 1/2 yrs and finally stopped a month ago when the symptoms become worse. Instead of PMS my doctor diagnosed me with PMDD instead of mood swings i was depressed(really) my face started to break out and i could not understand what was going on. I finally went to my doctor and he took me of Yasmin completely and I am now on Diane 35. Again my symptoms are back and they are worse but I know my body has to adjust to the pill. To you Amanda be careful what you say. Every woman biological make up is different and we all respond to medications differently.

I think It is wonderful...I don't understand why everyone can blame a little birth control pill. Come on now, is everyone honestly reading what they wrote it sounds ridiculous. My acne has cleared up and I haven't gained any weight except for the weight i put on myself not because of the pill. That whole weight gain thing all depends on you. I have headaches...but they are just headaches I had them before I started birth control -their not gonna disappear. Mood swings -we're woman like I said about the headaches- had mood swings before- their not gonna disappear... Thats all I got--- think about what your saying before you write it.

I have been on Yasmin a little over 2 years now. I have been on other BCP, such as Tri-cycline, Alesse, Diane 35. Yasmin was great in the beginning, no major side affects, except for the breast tenderness. This past year, the breast tenderness has increased and I cannot even touch my breasts. They are larger and very sensitive. I am very moodie, very emotional. Every month now, for the past 4-5 months, I have been having yeast infections. I went to see my gyno and did tests and nothing is wrong. He has no idea why the yeast infection is reoccuring. I've done some research and read other postings and some other women have had the same issue. It's very frustrating and I cannot take having yeast infections every month. I take Yasmin to help with my cramps, and primarily the endometriosis. I have had surgery (5years ago) to remove endometriosis and my gyno mentioned to say on the BCP to decrease the spreading of endometriosis. Although, Yasmin has been a pretty good BCP, I just can't take the breast tenderness and most of all the yeast infections every month. I will be going off Yasmin next month.

So I'll refer to today as Hell Day, the day when all the horrible symptoms of my birth control pill attack me at once and I literally cannot take it. I had this exact same thing happen when I was on the nuvaring, and I stopped it immediately. I'm willing to sacrifice having 100% safe sex if it means I don't have to feel like I'd rather shove a knife through my brain than exist. It's only my second month of Yasmin, and I'm feeling more fatigued than ever before in my life. I feel so horribly depressed. It's beautiful outside and I was lying on the grass, thinking only about being DEAD. I'm not one to be depressed. The only other time I've felt this awful was my third month into the Nuvaring. I specifically asked my doctor for something that wouldn't make me depressed, nor gain weight. Well, I gained about 5 pounds that won't come off no matter how hard I try, and the depression is just getting worse and worse. I'm stopping this pill tomorrow.
Other symptoms included:
*Initially: a sharp breathing pain under my left lung
*Weird, small rash on my leg
*Would rather be in bed than do anything
*Overwhelming feeling of loneliness, questioning self-worth, etc.

I was proscribed Yasmin for acne problems but straight away, I experienced nausea. I didn't take a liking to it at all because it constantly made me want to vomit all the time. But still, I was willing to trial it to treat my acne. After about a month of using it, the vomiting sensation didn't go away. Does anyone else experience the same problem? Finally, I gave it up altogether and switched to Diane35. I found Diane35 a much better treatment for acne without the vomiting side affects.

Severe Depression, Trouble Focusing eyes, Lumps in Breasts, heavy feeling on chest.
When I was on Yasmin I had constant headaches and I felt like I had to concentrate on remembering to breathe. It's the weirdest feeling having to "remember" to breathe. This may sound strange, but It felt like my chest was so heavy and my energy levels so low that if I didn't think about breathing, then within 30 seconds I would gasp. BAAAD medication.
I remember laying in bed thinking, ok... and breathe again (my life sucks (due to the depression the Yasmin caused))... oh that's right ... I forgot to breathe there for a second.
What I would like to know is what condition I have that would cause such a response from my taking this medication. I have low blood pressure as well. Perhaps I should get an EKG done?? I've been to the doctor many times about my PCOS symptoms and she thinks I'm a hypocondriac. Which I know I am not. I am just more in tune with my body than some people. I have to be, because I don't respond to medications the way others do and so i have to be my own doctor.
I don't know why they haven't checked me before. When i was on Diane 35 I felt like i was going to have a heart attack and I slept for 2 days straight in my bed without getting up to do much other than eat and drink.
Being so young (23) i think the doctors think that i'm not at risk for heart or stroke. But according to this book i've been reading hormone imbalances can cause heart attack or stroke without any other predisposing factors. Why doesn't my GP know this. Why do I know more than these doctors!!!!!!! And yet still don't know what the heck is going on??

I just switched about 2 weeks ago from Diane 35 to Yasmin and I've noticed that I've started breaking out in what looks like a rash on my face. I have eczema and I think sebhorrhea as well, and with Diane 35 my face was totally clear except for a couple of spots caused by eczema which i could deal with. Yasmin seemed as if it was killing my appetite but if it cannot deal with my eczema and sebhorrhea (most likely) I think I should go back to Diane 35 and gain the weight for the sake of good skin. Should I stop taking Yasmin immediately or should I continue with it till I get my period then continue with Diane? I'm confused. Anyone with the same side effects?

Wow! This forum is really informative and scary!
I have tried numerous pills, Marvelon, Ortho Tri-Cyclin, Diane, Alese and all have caused the same symptoms: Depression, lack of energy, emotional outburts, 10-15 pound weight gain and abdominal bloating to the point where people would ask me if I was pregnant (and the rest of my body would look porportional).
Its been 4 years since I have been on and off the pill and now at the age of 26 I am beginning to notice a chance in my hormones which I put facial hair on my chin and sideburns!
Being in a new relationship my doctor has prescribed Yasmin as birth control to help with facial hair and contraception.
I haven't started and am now apprehensive...does anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences with hair growth/reduction?

I have been on Alesse for about 3 years and I like it hands down compared to some other pills that I have tried. I tried Diane-35 which turned me into a psychocrazy lady who wanted to drop out of school and just cry all day. Then I tried Marvelon which made me gain about 10 pounds in two months. Alesse has not caused me any problems like other drugs. Recently my doctor wanted to switch me to Yasmin...but after reading what other people have said about it I am sticking with Alesse.....it is the lessor of two evils. The truth is that you have to weigh your choices...do you want to have a few minor problems(don't continue if you feel you are going crazy) or would you rather have a baby? When you put it like that...I would rather deal with a little vaginal dryness thank you very much.

I have been on Desogen for three months now and am experiencing all the side effects people have mentioned. Most annoying one being EXTREME weight gain (i believe it is water retention). But i think everyone reacts differently. I used to take Diane-35 and that is not available in the US. I think I will stop uding Desogen, esp since i use it for hirutism and not as a birth control.

I have been using Yasmin on my second month. I use to use Diane 35 until I found a fibroid and the doctor recommended I changed pills to see if it would stop the growth. Did not realized the symptoms until recently after using Yasmin. Decided yesterday I will not be taking them anymore. Thought I was loosing my mind when all i do is sleep when I get home from work. Went to my doctor today and explained him how I have been feeling. I have been getting headaches, tiredness, dryness, mood swings and bloating. Not a good feeling at all!
