I had a daughter on Dilantin for at least nine years, she had swollen gums, bleeding of the gums, she was still having seizures, stayed congested most of the time. Dr. said the swelling and bleeding was one of the side affects. Was told that the dilantin was having affect on her liver and they was weening her off the dilantin. she would also go through insomnia, temper tantrums. she also had a rash like measle in her face and had genital problems.

I have just been reading the list of, what I am considering to be "possible", side effects from Dilantin . Doesn't everyone, whether on Dilantin or no drugs at all experience headaches, nausea, stomach pains or depression from time to time?
After being on this medication for over 30 years there are some things which I've experienced. Just about everyone complains of hyperplasia but it has been my experience that if I maintain a clean healthy mouth, there is no hyperplasia. If, for one day, I do not brush my teeth, hyperplasia sets in immediately & it then takes a week or so to get it under control. So, brush, brush & brush your teeth.
As far as memory loss or difficulty learning, I suppose it happens to everyone at one time or another. However I have graduared from high school with honours & became a registered nurse (top 5 in my class of 56) all while I was on Dilantin.
The only true adverse side effect from taking Dilantin for over 30 years which I experience is that whenever I am tired, my speech can easily slur. I am very aware of this & it's become habit to pay close attention to my pronounciation & correct it so I may articulate normally. Not a big deal & a very small price to pay.
I'm not one for pity trips or blaming my seizures or medications for my downfalls in life. I am so grateful to have my seizures under control & hate to think where I would be today if not for Dilatin. Remember, if you look for it , you will likely find it. So try not to look for all these adverse side effects (crutches)& see the benifits. We have enough to handle keeping this under control & educating the sometimes ignorant world.
I took control of the epilepsy that attacked my system. I would never allow it to control me. Good luck to all of you. Sincerely :)

Hi all. I was diagnosed 3 or 4 years ago with epilepsy. So far, I have on about 5 different epilepsy meds. I can't recall the first 3 but had to get off them because of physical side-effects. My last one was Dilatin which worked pretty well for a year. I slept great - 8 hours on the dot. Then, I started to have short seizures that began to successively lengthen. So, I was switched to Keppra.

I started at 250mg/2xday on Keppra and now am up to 1000mg/2xday. I also started taking B6 100mg/day. A couple of days after starting Keppra, I started to get slight headaches. These went away after about 2 weeks. I also got a numb patch on the same place on the bottom of each foot. When I went up to 500mg/2xday, the numb patch spread, I started to feel off-balance, and I started to get the "rage" symptoms. I went up to 1000mg/2xday and most of the bottom of my two feet went numb and cold, I began to get slight tingling in my fingers and a mild case of tightness in my chest. I still felt off-balance and the rage symptoms were there. It began to get hard to get to sleep and I would get up unnecessarily early and not be able to fall back asleep. I want off this med. Maybe it works great for other people but for me it I take it at the levels I need to, I won't be able to work or do much of anything.

28 year old male. Seems like a lot of users of topamax are woman. I think i started using this pill about 6 months ago but im not really sure. Dr. Fox in the Bay Area of California prescribed me 200mg right away from day one for migraines and said to also to continue taking 550mg of Dilatin for my epilepsy at the same time.

Since then I have only lost like 5 pounds. I have that bad tatse in my mouth when I drink soda so I think thats where my weight loss came from. The memory loss was minimal and loss of was as well in the beginning.

Recently I have noticed the patchy hairy on the top and sides of my head as well as in my facial hair, no where else, not yet. But now I cant remember if I put a whole chicken in the oven or chicken legs to cook 20 minutes later. I cant remember work and talk to anyone without sounding stupid, luckily ive been there 10 years. I cant think of the words to say and i stutter trying to think of the words to say. Ive just started noticing when i try to drink out of a cup how i dont always get in my mouth but laugh it off but now i realize its seriously a problem. i cant even drink out of a damn cup. I forget to eat and loose track of time, hours pass all the time and I cant figure out where they went, if i wasnt awake id think i was abducted or something. I put things off and then forget to do them constantly to the point where I got my 15 day notice on my electric bill.

Im so tired because of this pill a friend told me to use hydroxycut to get some energy but even that barely keeps me going. When I dont take the hydroxycut to make me feel like I use to fel with decent energy, and I feel like I would just topamax alone on the weekends i dont even get out of bed.

BIG QUESTION! HAS ANYONE GOT OFF THIS PILL AND ONTO ANOTHER TO STOP THE MIGRAINES WITH DECENT SIDE EFFECTS? E-MAIL ME SO I CAN SUGGEST THE NAME TO MY DR, TELL ******

I was wondering if anyone has heard about Dilantin having sexual side effects. Because of the Dilantin I started taking Depo-Provera for my birth control, and I don't know which one could be affecting my sex drive. I have since stopped the Depo but am still waiting for my sex drive to return.
