My doctor prescribed Methylpred for post operative swelling. Mid-way through day one (of the 6 day course of treatment), I began to have the 'shakes'....... I seemed to become hypersensitive to pain and was unable to rest. In fact I found myself pacing and very restless. If I tried to sit, I would feel compelled to shake my foot....... Very disconcerting.
The following morning when I saw my doctor for my post-op visit, I mentioned my symptoms. Though I likely didn't need to; I was shaking and trembling so badly. He said my reaction was not uncommon and suggested that I skip 'day 2' and commence with 'day 3' level of medication. If the shaking was still bad and inhibiting me from sleeping; to skip to 'day 5'.
I have done so. I'm still shaking though perhaps not as badly. I can discern little inprovement in my swelling. Though I am continuing to use ice packs as he also directed me to do.
Over all I can't objectively say that this has helped my swelling or the expected discomfort cause by it. I will try to following through with the next several pills of Methylpred as my doctor suggested. I'm home now and my husband and I can sort of settle in for the next several days and moniter my situation.
I'm scheduled for my next post-op visit (to remove stitches) in 10 days. I anticipate that by then most of my swelling will have diminished considerably.
Personally I have to wonder if for post operative swelling; if the side effects I'm experiencing are worth whatever benefit the medication my offer.

Last spring I was given Zpak for flu/cold syptoms. I finished the first package and still experienced the same syptoms and discomfort with breathing. The doctor had given me a prescription for 2 paks and instructed me to have it filled. Because from her experience sometimes a second pak would be needed. The side effects that I have and still having is the lost of taste and smell. I can only differentiate whether something is sweet, sour, spicy or tart but I cannot give discern if its smell. I cannot smell fragrances, or smoke. I can taste the aspertane in sodas, but cannot tell the flavors of soda. I can smell the chemical that binds the soaps, lotion or perfumes. I also have had the experience of going to an ENT and guess what he also prescribed the Zpak for the congestion and fluid that I have been experiencing in my ears. I am very frighten regarding the loss of my senses of taste but the most frightening thing is the lost of smell. I cannot leave a pot on to boil without watching it now. A pan boiled dry and thank godness for smoke alarms. I so perplex with all of this. I've been dealing with this for almost a year now and still no sign of being able to smell or taste in site. I'm not a smoker and have had no other reasons for this to linger.
So what can I expect? Will my senses of taste and smell ever return? This is very heart wrenching and frightening. Since I alone most of the time.

I had 2 stints put in Mar2000. Arterial blockage 90%. Took Lipitor for 2 months.
Felt worse than before heart attack. Discontinued Lipitor. Feb. 2004 still no
improvements. Muscle pain, weakness, spasms, buzzing in right leg. Cant hold
arms or head up in vertical postion for 2 minutes without extreme pain and
weakness. Sitting or standing for 10 minutes is not possible due to back pain.
Have to keep moving until exhausted and then sleep. Use good diet and all the
exercise I can tolerate.I do NOT take any pain meds except aspirin or tylenol.
This is crazy. I walked home from the hospital after the stints and went
downhill after taking Lipitor. Any advice will be appreciated. thank You

I only take .5mg twice a day for anxiety. Started taking to help with palpitations and lightheadedness (chronic). Seems to help alot. Just as I started it a head cold settled in, so can't discern if the fatigue is from the cold, the klonopin, or both. Even with the fatigue I feel so much more functional. So very interesting. Bill
