Have been on Welchol for IBS for many years. It stopped my IBS symptoms but does cause constipation. I try to eat healthier in order to help with that. About 3 months ago, I began having pain in my fingers. I thought it was probably due to carpal tunnel syndrome. In the last two weeks, the pain intensified and spread to all the knuckles on my hand; I also had swelling and redness. The pain then spread to my toes, the rest of the bones in my feet, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, and ankles. Next came stinging and burning and then sporadic numbness. By late afternoon, the fatigue was incredible, and I would become dizzy. I went to the doctor, and he ran every blood test available. Everything came back normal, which was great, but my doctor couldn't pinpoint what was causing my problems. He said none of my medicines would cause such symptoms.
My boss asked me if I was taking any cholesterol medication, and I told her I took Welchol for IBS. She said she had read article upon article connecting cholesterol medication to joint paint and encouraged me to check online to see if I could find any answers. This site was one of the many I found where other people mentioned symptoms very similar to my own. My boss suggested I mention this to my doctor. I was thrilled at the prospect of finding such an "easy" solution since my other medications are not easily replaced.
My doctor instantly said that there was "no way" that Welchol could cause these symptoms since -- as so many of your doctors have told you -- that it is not absorbed into the bloodstream. However, he approved my stopping Welchol as an "experiment". I noticed that many of you mentioned it took a few weeks or more for the symptoms to reduce. My doctor warned me again that this was not the solution and that in a couple days, he wants me to consider taking Neurontin or going on a sedative for stress. He thinks, since all the tests have come back negative, that stress is the real culprit.
I know that stress can cause many health problems, but it just seems too coincidental that so many of you have experienced the same symptoms I'm facing. Do you think I'm making the right decision? My symptoms are difficult to cope with at times, but they are not incapacitating. I would really like to try staying off of Welchol and see if it helps in the weeks to come instead of adding yet another medication to my list.
I would appreciate your advice and thoughts. Thank you for your posts -- they have given me real hope for a solution.

Wow. This news gives me so much hope. I've been on the Nuvaring since it was still in the post-trial stages and nobody had even heard of it. My doctor recommended it because it was supposed to help with acne and weight gain, and I'd been having no luck with Yaz or Ortho Tricyclene. I've always had irregular periods, I've been depressive since high school, and I started having migraines when I was 13. Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. What this means is that all these symptoms that everyone was describing here, while they have been getting dramatically worse, were nothing I would even think of ascribing to my birth control. I've gained 40 pounds in the last 3 years, but I blamed that on my increased depression and general malaise. I'd stopped having migraines more than once a year, but now I get migraine-like (not usually as bad as the originals) headaches as often as 4-5 times a month. I've had insane mood swings ranging between white hot anger and debilitating depression (even having thoughts of suicide for the first time since high school), and sex burns and leaves me walking funny about 99.9 percent of the time. I thought it was just me, or the fibro (which leaves me feeling pretty sensitive all over); same with the nausea, especially in the morning and always during my period. Could this seriously be the Nuvaring? Oh my god, I hope so. An easy solution like that makes me want to cry from relief.
... but how do I do birth control now? Do we always have to use a condom? I've never been pregnant, so I've been told the IUD isn't nearly as safe if your cervix hasn't been violated by childbirth. Oh well, better than being crazy, I suppose.

I recently had a baby and have just started the pill this month. I used to be on Nordette before the pregnancy, but when I went to see my gyn for my post-partum check-up, she decided to put me on this. I don't understand why? (I have heard that doctors can get "perks" from drug firms for prescribing a lot of their product)
I just finished my first month and I'm due to begin my 2nd month this Sunday (June 1st). Until finding this website, I thought I was losing my mind! I'm so glad to find out that I'm not and that there is an easy solution to this...stop taking Femcon! I'm going to tell my gyn to put me back on my old pill. I never had any problems before and why I got switched is beyond me.
I have been getting severe stomach pains, diarrhea, migraines, depression, sleepless nights, back pains, and crazy mood swings! My husband made a comment to me yesterday that I was acting really nutty. That made me stop and think, "Wow, I am totally chewing him out for no reason!" And I have been crying for NO reason lately! Ahhhh!
This might sound crazy...I have been "nesting", too! Compulsive cleaning! (and NO I'm not pregnant again!) Anyone else doing this?
THANK YOU LADIES for posting your comments. I thought I was alone (and crazy!). I am soooo done with Femcon!

I have been on Yasmin a little over 2 years now. I have been on other BCP, such as Tri-cycline, Alesse, Diane 35. Yasmin was great in the beginning, no major side affects, except for the breast tenderness. This past year, the breast tenderness has increased and I cannot even touch my breasts. They are larger and very sensitive. I am very moodie, very emotional. Every month now, for the past 4-5 months, I have been having yeast infections. I went to see my gyno and did tests and nothing is wrong. He has no idea why the yeast infection is reoccuring. I've done some research and read other postings and some other women have had the same issue. It's very frustrating and I cannot take having yeast infections every month. I take Yasmin to help with my cramps, and primarily the endometriosis. I have had surgery (5years ago) to remove endometriosis and my gyno mentioned to say on the BCP to decrease the spreading of endometriosis. Although, Yasmin has been a pretty good BCP, I just can't take the breast tenderness and most of all the yeast infections every month. I will be going off Yasmin next month.

I just gave birth to my daughter 6 weeks ago and after 2 weeks of giving birth, I put in the NR, which was the first birth control I've ever used. I went to the doctor yester for my 6 week checkup and my thyroid is swollen to the size of an egg. He suggested getting an ultrasound and bloodwork done to check it out and I will be going this week but I was just wondering if the NR could contribute to this swelling since they're both hormone related. I have other symptoms but I thought it could be because I just had a baby: constipation, diarrhea, I felt like I had the flu and it turned out to be an upper respiratory infection, tired, severely dehydrated one day to the point of extreme body aches and pain, congestion, and of course the swollen thyroid now. After reading this site I'm worried I should take it out but I don't want to get pregnant again and it's hard for me to take pills religiously everyday. I thought this was an easy solution to that. I just put in my second ring 2 days ago. We'll see what my results are from the thyroid testing.
