Hi, i'm 24 and i've had my mirena coil fitted now for over a year. I have been experiencing cramps, bleeding, headaches, tiredness, dizziness and aches in my legs but never thought anything of it. Until now when my cramps are severe in my tummy and lower back. I can describe them as a few things, labor pains, severe period pains and also appendicitis pain. its not my appendix, as I had it taken out years ago. I recently went to my GP who advised that I have a pregnancy test just to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which came back negative. She advised that I should take regular paracetamol for the pain and see how I go. But they don't seem to disappear. I now have the same cramps but now also my bum area as well as my tummy area and lower back when I go to toilet whether for a number 1 or number 2, and it is excruciating which makes me cry. I also recently had intercourse with my partner, and the cramps came back with a vengeance, and i was in so much pain, i almost called an ambulance. I have no idea as to what I think it is until I started writing my symptoms into the internet and came back that it may be my mirena coil. I never thought anything of it at first, but after reading other peoples side effects of the coil i'm beginning to wonder. Some people are saying that the coil had pierced there uterus and infected their ovaries, and they suffered with the same side effects that I am experiencing. I am scared as to what I think it may be, in case my coil has done the same. I have also noticed that i cannot feel my coil strings but at the same time I have not experienced any bleeding. Could anyone give me advice. Thank you N.

I am 26 years old and I've had the Mirena for two years. I ended up getting it because my doctor told me it was so much more convenient than taking the pill and more affordable. In the beginning, I felt okay but after awhile, I started feeling nauseous and sick all the time. Six months ago, I started bleeding for a couple of weeks straight, but I figured that it was due Mirena and the effects of it with menstrual cycles. Just to be safe, I took a pregnancy test and it came out positive and I was planning on going setting an appointment to see my doctor, only to have to rush to the E.R. later that night with killer cramps. I found out I had an ectopic pregnancy (I never had an ectopic pregnancy nor has any of my family members) and had to go in for a laparoscopy. I asked the doctor in the E.R. if Mirena should be removed and he simply replied that there was no need to. I had severe depression for a couple of weeks afterwards. I thought I felt awful with my usual symptoms of Mirena, but then the symptoms got even worse. I began experiencing dizziness, irregular cycles, a total weight gain of 20 pounds (I've never had a weight problem and my diet never changed), and extreme moodiness. After all the things I've experienced and now having to worry that Mirena will only increase my chances of having another ectopic pregnancy, I really look forward to my appointment in getting Mirena removed!

Hi all...

Well, I first posted when I got the Mirena out on Feb 13th and I just wanted to give an update.

I am STILL having migraine type headaches and a "morning sickness" of sorts. The moodiness is NO MORE! YIPEE!!!

I was wondering if anyone can share what their periods were like after taking it out? I'm late this month and I figured I might be. I've actually been having so many pregnancy type symptoms (which are recorded side effects of Mirena) that I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative.

My doctor told me that Mirena can be ineffective at preventing pregnancy in the first 10 days and she told me to use condoms during that time. However, my dh and I did have unprotected sex once during the first 10 days after the bleeding subsided. So, I guess it's in the back of my head that there could be a pregnancy. I guess what is concerning me the most is that the doctor said that IF you do become pregnant on Mirena that the egg would never be able to settle in the uterus and it would stay in the tubes and be fertilized there which leads to ectopic pregnancy. I know that's more than likely not the case, but being that it was suspected that I've already had an ectopic pregnancy ( i lost it too early to truly know) I'm kind of concerned.

Anyone have anything like pregnancy happen after Mirena???? Or ON Mirena? I know they say it's as effective as tubes tied, but I'm just curious.
And how are the cycles after Mirena? Anyone notice a difference in length?

Thanks for all your support and encouragement ladies :-)
YOUR WONDERFUL!

My experienced with Mirena was my worst experience ever in my life. After I had my first son my doctor and I discussed some suggestions of birth control as I was trying to go back to school. My doctor suggested that mirena would be the best choice because i can have it for up to five years without worrying of getting pregnant; so I agreed with my doctor for i believed she knows more than i do when it comes to birth control methods. I had the mirena inserted in me, but since mirena was put in me I kept having excruciating stomach pain, cramping, bloating, head aches, non-stop bleeding and much more. Finally, after i realized that i could no longer bear the horrible pain of mirena, I decided to have my doctor take it out. However, just after mirena was taken out I had an ectopic pregnancy which caused me to lose one of my folopian, and now I'm only left with one tube. After the bad experience with mirena, i discussed with my doctor to find out if mirena was the cause of my ectopic pregnancy because i used to use other birth control methods, but i never had any terrible problem with them like mirena. My doctor stated that she wasn't sure if mirena was the cause, but I definitely believe that mirena was the cause of my ectopic pregnancy. I am so relieved to know that i am not the only one to have a very bad experience with mirena, and I was also waiting for this day when a law suit can be filed against mirena.

Thanks for allowing me to express my bad experience with mirena,

Hawa!

Wow, some really interesting stories about NuvaRing on here. I had never head about it until 3 weeks ago when getting my annual, I brought up using Seasonale birth control and my doctor told me about the Ring, so he gave me a sample and sent me on my way. It was really convenient - except when I started having sex, I would take it out and put it back in afterwards. Not sure if that was smart or not. I took it out Friday of last week, and Monday started spotting brown blood - thought this was normal. Tuesday morning around 9:30 am I had severe cramps, headache and could barely walk when the cramps came. I got lightheaded and short of breath. Finally, when I went to the bathroom I had wiped and noticed pure blood (Im sure most can tell the difference between period blood and bleeding from an infection of some sort), when I looked down I saw a large mass of some sort. I freaked out because a friend had had a miscarriage and this looked exactly like it. I called the doctor who advised me to collect it and come in asap. I did have sex that weekend I was off it so I freaked out.

When I went in I was advised it was a side effect of the Ring. It was called a decidua cast, basically a linin of your uterus that is formed when pregnant, a lot of times this is shed due to an ectopic pregnancy. Ever sense then I have had the worst period EVER! Constant bleeding, I have to change my pad every 1-2 hours instead of 3-4 (I am afraid to use a tampon right now after this). The blood clots are just horrible.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND NUVARING!

I'm not looking to offend anyone, but if you look up the FDA info on Mirena, the symptoms many of the ladies here are complaining of ARE listed. So for those who claim to feel deceived, I think that they most likely did not do the research they ought have done. If you are going to be shoving some foreign object into your body, and for such a long period of time, It seems common sense that you'd want to know everything there is to know about it beforehand. It's your body- show some responsibility and take charge of yourself. Just like a car salesman, the doctor is going to tell you what you want to hear in order to make the sale. It's up to you to find the truth. And the truth is not that hard to find.

I did research Mirena before choosing to use it. Not just by reading the pamphlets, comparing to other birth control methods and talking to my ob/gyn, but also by browsing through forums filled with horror stories like this one. I have had Mirena for about 1 year. I barely noticed the insertion. I had minimal cramping the day of insertion. I think I bled for a couple weeks. Over the course of about 6 months, my periods got shorter, lighter, and disappeared completely. Once in awhile I will have some brownish spotting, but it is rare. I have no pains or weight gain. My husband only feels the strings in certain positions. The negative effects I have noticed are that my face is extremely oily, I'm fatigued, I have little sex drive and I'm irritable. Besides these, I am very happy with Mirena. I get baby fever rather easily, and even though I have had three children in just over four years, without Mirena I would most likely be pregnant again at this very moment.

Of course my doctor raved about Mirena ("My wife LOVED it!"). He's paid to do that. The same guy tried coercing me into inducing my last labor just so that he wouldn't have to be woken out of bed if it started naturally in the middle of the night. Guess what! I DID drag his butt out of bed in the middle of the night, and I chose Mirena because I decided it was the best option, NOT because he told me it was.

I've had mirena inserted about a month after my son was born he's now 15 months. I haven't had any side affects until now. Today is Monday Aug 10, 2008. On Saturday I was completely out of it. I was experiencing cramping, nausea, spotting, and the worst vomitting. What was wrong with me. Everyone suspects that I am pregnant. Not to mention that I slept for almost 7 hours on Friday. I have been searching every website to see if anyone experienced a pregnancy on mirena. I have found helpful advices. My husband says he's sueing if I'm pregnant, but I will be more concerned about having a healthy baby. At 22 this would be my third baby, it was unplanned nevertheless I will be happy. I pray that the baby is healthy and beautiful. I will see a nurse today to confirm if indeed I am pregnant. No birth control is 100 %. I don't know who to prevent pregnancy. I think it is Gods matter and man can not take it into their own hands. He said to be fruitful and multiply. Keep me in your prayers as I would for you.

I had Mirena inserted in August 2007. I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, and the doctor had to take me off of NuvaRing because of the connection of the hormones in birth control and HBP. My Gyno said that Mirena was very low hormone and would not affect my BP. Since I have been on Mirena, my BP has stabilized, but now I get dizzy spells, often, and I constantly have a headache. I also have cramping, sometimes very severe. I have gained ten pounds, and I have bad acne. I work out religiously and eat very healthy. I kept wondering how I gained this weight, and couldn't get it off, until I found this website. Also, I have never had an acne problem, and at 31 years old, I don't think I should have the skin of a sixteen year old, especially because I had perfect skin at 16. I found this website because I was having spotting, again, tonight, so I decided to GOOGLE the phrase "Mirena Side Effects." The spotting is not unusual since I have had the Mirena. It is one of the side effects that I experience regularly, especially after intercourse. Intercourse has been a problem, too. I have been married, happily, for ten years, and our sex life was great until I had the Mirena put in. Now, I don't want my husband to touch me, and I have even told him several times, since having the Mirena implanted, that I want a divorce. I think this has to do with the physical and emotional changes that I have had since getting Mirena. I have thought about having it removed, but I am finally starting my career after staying home with my three children. So I am torn because I don't want to get pregnant. My husband has said several times that he thinks that the Mirena has caused the problems in our marriage, and after seeing what others have to say, I am sure he is right. Although I have been thinking the same thing for months. Just a couple more points to make: Like some of the other woman, I have insomnia. When I had the Mirena inserted, I think I experienced TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) because I had an extreme pain where it was place, followed by immense dizziness, nausea, blurred vision and a rushing sensation in my face and head. When I went to get a checkup, I was told that the Mirena was "lost," and the doctor had to do an ultrasound to locate it. I have lower back pain and strong, period-like cramps. And I have an irregular period with spotting throughout the month. (It is getting expensive having to buy new panties all the time.) I think that I have made my decision to have the Mirena removed.

Okay now i'm really scared- I just got the Mirena put in yesterday, I used to get the depo and had some horrible side effects from that. I have not had any major side effects as of yet (too soon i know) except some minor cramping.
I know if any of the same side effects come back as the depo i will have this thing out so fast.
I had lost 15 pounds since stopping depo and a am so worried that will come back now that i have read all of the side effects on this page.
The one question i have is since having the mirena put in i kind of feel like i have a tampon in and was wondering if that feeling is normal or will maybe go away with time.

I have a herniated disc L5S1. I had my first of six injections in September of 2006. for three months I had problems with my periods. After my third shot my husband and I decided to start trying to get pregnant. We wanted to try earlier but my back pain stopped us from trying. Ever since I received the first shot I have had problems with fertility. I do not get the cervical mucas anymore. This mucas keeps the sperm alive and helps them travel to the egg. I also had an ectopic pregnancy a year ago in April of 2007. I know that Kenalog has had something to do with both of these issues. I have been trying to get pregnant again for about 9 months with no sucess. My husband has been checked out so we know that it is not him. I have a son so I know that everything was fine before these shots. When I talk to my doctor about my problems they tell me it is not the Kenalog because it does not stay in your system for that long. I say that this is a steriod and you always here how bad they are and the horrible side effects. I know that this stuff is the reason that I cannot get pregnant and it is probably what caused the ectopic pregnancy that almost killed me.

I had a copper wire IUD, but after having an ectopic pregnancy, likely caused by it, I had it removed. I tried condoms for a short while, but they are so inconvenient, so I went to the NuvaRing. I put in the NuvaRing and felt fine the first day, but by day two I started experiencing pain behind my knees, dizziness, headache, pain in my eyes, spaciness, nausea, lack of appetite, and weakness throughout my body. I didn't have any mood swings, in fact I felt quite good, mentally. However, by day three I couldn’t stand the headache and dizziness and took out the NuvaRing. I was skeptical in the first place to use a hormonal birth control, and this confirmed it. If any one has a suggestion for a non-hormonal birth control form that is convenient and safe, let me know.

I went to the ER 3 days ago with bad stomach pains. I've had mirena for a little over a year now. They told me I was pregnant. Then they did an ultrasaound and found out it was ectopic. They did surgery right away. I have always hated my iud, but now I am recovering from surgery because of it. The only good thing is that they took the iud out!!!

I have been on about 5 different formulations of BCP's in my lifetime - the last being Ortho Tricyclene and Loestrin. Whenever I tried the BCP's, I dealt with horrible acne (I had acne normally but it really went out of control while on the BCP), massive weight gain (like 10 to 20 pounds) and depression (crying mainly).

After the birth of my son in 1997, my midwife inserted a copper type IUD due to the fact that I wasn't interested in more children. After 2 years, I suffered an ectopic pregnancy where the baby and my left ovary and fallopian tube were removed. I created a web page on my experience for others who want more information about the IUD and I frequently get asked about what type of birth control I use currently.

Sadly, for many years my husband and I either used condoms (which just leave me worring every month as to whether it worked or not) or abstenence (which is no fun). I decided to finally try Yasmin. I heard it was different from the other pill formulations out there so I thought I'd give it a shot. It was made available to the U.S. market in May of 2001 and I have just started taking it in January of 2003. I will be entering onto my 3rd month and pack in one more week.

I have experienced breast tenderness and a definite increase in size to my breasts (not sure how much, but I've heard of some women increasing by 1 to 2 sizes) and there was an initial small acne break out in the 3rd week of my first pack, but since then my face is completely clear. I have not experienced ANY bloating (and I normally experienced this even when I wasn't on any birth control) nor have I gained any weight. (normally in the past I usually gained quite a bit of weight within the first few months of taking a BCP) I did have a slight headache before my period arrived, but I normally get that every month anyway even when I'm pill free.

I guess my opinion is that I am very happy so far with this pill. If any women out there have had weight problems or acne problems on other pill formulations in the past, I would suggest you give Yasmin a try because it just might work for you.
