I am 24, I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. After I gave birth to my youngest, I opted for the Mirena thinking it would be the best choice for me. For a few months, things were fine. Then things went downhill in a hurry. I lost every bit of my weight and then some with my first baby, now I can't get the weight off at all. I have migraines all the time and waves of nausea that last all day. I went from having constant periods, then they just stopped. Then I bled for nearly 3 weeks, then nothing again. I have NO sex drive whatsoever and I cry for absolutely no reason. I also did not realize that you can still get pregnant on the Mirena, but the fertilized egg has nowhere to implant. I don't want to have miscarriages every month! I really hoped that I would have a great experience with the Mirena, but I have had nothing but trouble. I am getting it removed on the 17th, and I am so excited, but I am nervous because my uterus is extremely retroflexed, and I hope it comes out easily!!!

I just gave birth to my daughter 6 weeks ago and after 2 weeks of giving birth, I put in the NR, which was the first birth control I've ever used. I went to the doctor yester for my 6 week checkup and my thyroid is swollen to the size of an egg. He suggested getting an ultrasound and bloodwork done to check it out and I will be going this week but I was just wondering if the NR could contribute to this swelling since they're both hormone related. I have other symptoms but I thought it could be because I just had a baby: constipation, diarrhea, I felt like I had the flu and it turned out to be an upper respiratory infection, tired, severely dehydrated one day to the point of extreme body aches and pain, congestion, and of course the swollen thyroid now. After reading this site I'm worried I should take it out but I don't want to get pregnant again and it's hard for me to take pills religiously everyday. I thought this was an easy solution to that. I just put in my second ring 2 days ago. We'll see what my results are from the thyroid testing.

I started feeling much better very quickly after being off Lipitor now 7 months. However, the symptoms I had using the RX has cause significant problems. I fell so many times with my weak joints and muscles, that I had severe problems. I now need to have knee replacement surgery after falling so many times injuring my knees and weakened muscles to support myself. I am getting cortisone shots in that knee, as well as physical therapy. My MRI shows a torn meniscus, stretch PCL very thin, cartlidge loss and debris, still swollen with csyt after all these months. With no meds, and lack of being able to exercise, I now have hig-chol back. On and on it goes.... a real catch 22. Take care of yourself, watch out for symptoms. I ignored sx's thinking it was stress but after reading adverse reactions, it fit me to the T.

Although this isn't a side effect I wasn't quite sure where to post it... But my question is: Do you know anyone or did you get pregnant while using the Yasmin birth control pill? I know that these pills make your body think it's pregnant but I think I may actually be pregnant. Although I don't "feel" pregnant my body sure is acting like it is, I.E. sore breasts, weird cravings and aversions to food, headaches, very tired, very hungry etc. Has anyone had these side effects too and you weren't pregnant? Thanks!

I think it's terrible how some doctor's give some info and others give different info, it is hideous - they should all be trained to fully inform their patients. After my Mirena fell out I did some research on all IUD's and bc pills and was shocked at what I found. I did find a lot more info about the IUD's and the BC pill causing abortions. For those who are against abortion, all of these IUD's cause abortions that the woman is not even aware of if a fertilized egg happens to make it through. This was explained by my doc and I did do further research on on the net. All you have to do it google "do iuds cause abortion or do bc pills cause abortion" and you will get more info on it. Here is a summary - Mirena and all bc pills have 3 mechanisms- 1) inhibiting ovulation 2)thickening the cervix mucous making it hard for sperm to travel to the egg, and 3)thinning and shriveling of the uterus to the point that it is unable or less able to facilitate the implantation of the fertilized egg. The first 2 mechanisms are contraceptive, the last is abortive. The Paraguard is only slightly different in that the copper disables the sperm, but again if one should make it past and fertilize an egg, the copper creates such a hostile environment that the egg can not attach. It does depend on your opinion on when life begins - whether it is at the moment of conception or when the fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus. Only when all 3 mechanisms fail will you get pregnant, that is why they have such a high success rate of 99%. So again, google this if you want to know more because if you take any of these methods, you could potentially have an abortion and not even know it. Some Dr.'s will not even insert the IUD's for ethical reasons because they know it causes unknown abortions. You could end up having one once a month, once a year or luck out and never, but the risk is there. If you need proof of this you can call Dr. in Federal Way, WA at ****** and ask if he does the Mirena or the Paraguard and you will be told he doesn't do either for ethical reasons. If you are serious about getting more information, I can forward it to you. I urge everyone looking for a good birth control to not only look up the name of the product, but check out negative side effects and ask if it could potentially cause abortions. I am sitting on the fence to whether life begins at conception or begins when it attaches to the wall of the uterus, all I know is that I am sick of all the hormones messing me up, changing my moods, and ruing my sex drive among other things. If you would like more information, please email, serious inquiries only. I believe it is wrong to give a woman a form of birth control and not make it very clear all of the side effects especially the abortive side effect when they don't even know if their patient is pro-life or pro-choice. I have a website that explains the bc pill part of it and would be happy to forward to anyone who is interested. My direct email is ****** One more thing, the Depo shot works the same. All I hope to do is educate women about what I have learned in the last 3 days. Please give this information or post on any site you see fit to get this information out!!!!!!!! IF ALL YOU DO IS GOOGLE IT, YOU WILL SEE WHERE i AM COMING FROM IN MY MESSAGE.

I had my Mirena removed a month and a half ago and I feel GREAT. I am a MOM again. My kids aren't afraid of me anymore which was the worst part of the side effects. I am starting a new job this week as a nurse (I got my license 2 weeks ago) and am GLAD that the Mirena will not affect my attitude at work.
I have noticed a huge difference at home. The sex drive is still non existent but it wasn't there very much even before Mirena. I am more willing to do more and be there more often. Things are so good, that I don't plop my kids in front of the TV so I can go off to my room or the table to be online. Tomorrow, I am calling Verizon so that they can shut off our TV, Internet, and Phone services. We have cell phones, the library has computers with internet access, and we have a DVD player attached to the TV.
I am so EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!

I had Mirena inserted Nov. 2007 after the birth of my baby girl. I went from an extremely high sex drive to NO DRIVE at all. I had unexpected brain surgery 3 weeks after my daughter was born to remove a tumor, so I thought that I wasn't ready mentally or it was all the medications I was taking, I was never informed on any of these side effects (shame on me for not checking into it more- trust me I paid for my mistake by having my sex drive abolished). Two days ago, I noticed something poking me, upon investigation - The Mirena had completely come out. I discovered this about an hour after having sex!! My husband and I are not ready for a third child so I pray that I am not pregnant. I have yet to read another story where one has actually fallen out, so it must not happen that much. I hope I get my sex drive back and make my husband feel wanted again after a year as I will not be replacing it with another Mirena, I would have never had this inserted had I known there were sexual side effects because a high sex drive or any at all is now very important to me. I am now researching Paraguard, and aside from a regular to heavy period it sounds good to me because it is hormone-free. Aside from no sex drive and it falling out, I did not have any other issues like others have had with hair loss, cramping, etc. We did have the issue of my husband feeling it during sex every once in a while because there is a limit to how short they can cut it. In the beginning I had light spotting every 3 or 4 weeks for several months and then at about 1 year, no period at all. I have had more depression than usual, but we have had a lot going on in the last year so I can not blame the Mirena for that. Aside from the sex drive issues it worked very well for me and had it not fallen out I would never have been reading all these forums and educating myself.

I am curious as to know if anyone else has experienced the same problems I seem to be experiencing now. I got my Mirena inserted Oct 28, 08 and bled heavily for 3 weeks. Since then I have had spotting every now and then but no period. I have cramps all the time and it feels sort of like being prego but I am not. I also have discharge all the time and it started after I got Mirena put in. I am trying to remain optimistic about this because I want it to work, will someone please give me some advice as to what I should do?
Thanks

Hi all...
Well, I first posted when I got the Mirena out on Feb 13th and I just wanted to give an update.
I am STILL having migraine type headaches and a "morning sickness" of sorts. The moodiness is NO MORE! YIPEE!!!
I was wondering if anyone can share what their periods were like after taking it out? I'm late this month and I figured I might be. I've actually been having so many pregnancy type symptoms (which are recorded side effects of Mirena) that I took a pregnancy test and it came back negative.
My doctor told me that Mirena can be ineffective at preventing pregnancy in the first 10 days and she told me to use condoms during that time. However, my dh and I did have unprotected sex once during the first 10 days after the bleeding subsided. So, I guess it's in the back of my head that there could be a pregnancy. I guess what is concerning me the most is that the doctor said that IF you do become pregnant on Mirena that the egg would never be able to settle in the uterus and it would stay in the tubes and be fertilized there which leads to ectopic pregnancy. I know that's more than likely not the case, but being that it was suspected that I've already had an ectopic pregnancy ( i lost it too early to truly know) I'm kind of concerned.
Anyone have anything like pregnancy happen after Mirena???? Or ON Mirena? I know they say it's as effective as tubes tied, but I'm just curious.
And how are the cycles after Mirena? Anyone notice a difference in length?
Thanks for all your support and encouragement ladies :-)
YOUR WONDERFUL!

I was so amazed to see so many people having the same side effects as I am. I thought I was just stressed out from working full time, being a full tine student in college and a single mother of a 3 year old. I have not had this much acne on my face since I was in high school and I am 28 years old. I have gained so much weight that most of my old clothes don't fit anymore and I don't have the money to buy new clothes. My mirena was inserted in May 2008. After reading these blogs, I think I will get it taken out, but I would hate to get back on the birth control pill and I had a bad experience with Nuvaring too. I read in a magazine that what Mirena does is make the uterus uninhabitable for the fertilized egg to grow, so this means we are pregnant every month and pass the fertilized egg out with our menstrual cycles.

I have had the Mirena implant for over two years now and I was so happy at first to find a way to have sex with my boyfriend without a condom or the risk of pregnancy. How many times and in how many ways must we realize that we cannot have our cake and eat it too? Sex was once something that almost always resulted in pregnancy. Now that we have the technology to have sex any time anywhere without the consequence of guaranteed pregnancy we forget what a striking contradiction this behavior is to the biological purpose of sex. Of course sex is incredibly enjoyable but, despite the theme of excess encouraged in our modern life, we must really consider the cost of employing these methods that allow us to have it irresponsibly. I speak from experience that my motivation to get the Mirena was not to have sex with anyone anytime anywhere but to have the freedom to do so, within the relationship that I was in, was something I found liberating. Now, two years later, I'm looking down at rapidly shedding hair on the keyboard as I write this. I have always had thin hair but in much more abundance. This, however, was not my first concern, nor was the acne, or itchy scalp. My first concern was that I stopped having my period completely within months of getting the implant. I made an appointment to see a Gynecologist at Planned Parenthood, where I had the IUD implanted for free, to discuss my apprehension that this was an unnatural side effect. She proceeded to define for me what "natural" was by retracing the history of woman and childbirth and how before birth control woman spent most of their childbearing and sexually active years in some state of pregnancy and so suffered this rather than regular periods. Surely I was thankful that this was not the case with my life and readily accepted her definition of "natural' as one who does not experience monthly periods. She went on to say that the body is exhausted by the duty of expelling unused egg after unused egg month after month. I left feeling that much more convinced I was doing the right thing for my body and my sex life.
Of course I was skeptical of her ulterior motives, working at a free clinic, her social responsibility is to get every woman that walks through her door on some form of birth control. Like every other pleasure we have the opportunity to enjoy in excess, condom free sex can become addicting. I do not look forward to using prophylactics in the future, what I do look forward to is having the drive to seek a mate. My sexual motivation has become as paper thin as my hair after two years with the device. I must admit that these side effects, along with acne, dry scalp, and depression, have not asserted themselves until now. One year ago I was in a very sexually satisfying relationship and cannot say that at the time I was lacking sex drive due to the implant. However, I was also not losing hair by the handful at that time. Is it my fear of going bald that is expediting the process of my IUD removal or is it that I truly believe the hormonal repercussion of suppressing my ability to become pregnant is directly related to my loss of sexual/romantic ambition? Surely it’s both since my chances of finding a mate as an asexual bald woman are highly unlikely, regardless of my ability to offer condom free sex. If my theory is correct and my drive to seek a mate with whom I can share the great human gift of physical and emotional intimacy returns along with my hair, after removing the Mirena device I will have to explore the alternatives to birth control. There is the cycle method where you map out the times of the month you are most and least likely to become pregnant. I hear there’s a male birth control out there, though I wouldn’t wish the side effects, such as woman experience, on them. The suppression of male sexual ambition might lead to the very collapse of civilization. And of course I will have to embrace the condom and I’m sure they’re getting thinner and more effective every day, or at least I hope so.

I have been taking Lyrica for about 4 months (200mg total taken over 2 intervals per day) and have been having a terrible time with insomnia: I fall asleep but only sleep for 3-4 hours, then I either don't sleep, barely doze, or sleep extremely lightly with many awakenings for the rest of the night. I came online to research whether insomnia was a possible side-effect of Lyrica, but the information I am finding suggests the drug is used to *treat* insomnia... I am not certain my insomnia is linked to Lyrica, but in case there are more people out there experiencing similar problems and it's an as-yet undocumented side-effect, I thought I should add my two-cents-worth to mathews1965's comment. (No nausea; definite depression, although it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing considering the prolonged lack of sleep.)

Okay, I am 16, have never taken any birth control, and I am in my 3rd week of Loestrin. My doctor told me that if i started the pill on the first day of my period (august 1) that i would not have to wait to have UNPROTECTED sex, but to be safe, my boyfriend and I waited until august 7th to have sex, we also had sex on the 12th. Around the 15th I had some light pink discharge that lasted for 2 days...this worried me a little but i did not think much of it. Soon after that I started having back pains, cramps, nausea, headaches, my breasts are swollen, VERY tender, nipples are larger/darker, you can see the blue veins in them also. I have been picky about foods, discharge has increased, and have had terrible heartburn and have been extremely emotional. I have also had pains in my knees and ankles, and smells make me very sick to my stomach. I am very worried that I am pregnant.....but I am not supposed to get my period until the 28th so I have to wait...if anyone has been pregnant or had these symptoms on Loestrin PLEASE let me know....Thanks!

I've had mirena inserted about a month after my son was born he's now 15 months. I haven't had any side affects until now. Today is Monday Aug 10, 2008. On Saturday I was completely out of it. I was experiencing cramping, nausea, spotting, and the worst vomitting. What was wrong with me. Everyone suspects that I am pregnant. Not to mention that I slept for almost 7 hours on Friday. I have been searching every website to see if anyone experienced a pregnancy on mirena. I have found helpful advices. My husband says he's sueing if I'm pregnant, but I will be more concerned about having a healthy baby. At 22 this would be my third baby, it was unplanned nevertheless I will be happy. I pray that the baby is healthy and beautiful. I will see a nurse today to confirm if indeed I am pregnant. No birth control is 100 %. I don't know who to prevent pregnancy. I think it is Gods matter and man can not take it into their own hands. He said to be fruitful and multiply. Keep me in your prayers as I would for you.

i've had my mirena in for almost 10 weeks, i had my baby girl on April 2nd, and got mirena may 12th and everything was fine at first... besides the fact that i've been bleeding ever since i had it put in, and on 2 occasions have passed flesh colored blood clots, had severe cramping, weight gain, headaches, depression, paranoia, anxiety, anger, extreme appetite gain, loss of sex drive, and many other strange side effects... i never would've thought that these things were caused by this IUD, until i read how many other women were having side effects to... then finally i realized how this thing worked... it doesn't prevent pregnancy at all... there's a chemical that thins the lining of your uterus, therefor, an egg gets fertilized, travels to your uterus, and your body aborts it, so you are time after time becoming pregnant, it just makes it physically impossible for you to carry the baby in your womb... which raises this question to me... does this mean it could cause tubal pregnancy? which is a risk to your life?! hmmm...

Have taken 500mg Levaquin for 10 days on numerous ocassions to fight lung infections in between Cat Scan follow-ups for Lung Cancer since 2006.
Worked fine for my lungs, and I've been LC free for some time. Two months ago rt elbow swelled up, first like a mushy sack, now more firm, size of an egg, no pain then or now. Few weeks later Lt elbow began to swell but not as large and no pain. Dr. said wait few weeks and he'll refer me to surgeon. Now this FDA report on Levaquin has me wondering. I have full motion and no pain. Could this be a pre-cursor to possible tendon damage from Levaquin. Your input would be appreciated. Bill B

I got Mirena put in on July 5, 07...never had a child but Dr. said since I was 36 and not planning on having children, Mirena was a good alternative to the pill which I had been on since I was 19. On the pill I had very light 2-3 day periods and with diet and exercise, could lose weight. Now, almost a year on Mirena...the only good think that has gone away from when I was on the pill is the migrane headaches that I was starting to get on a monthly basis...but, in their place...I have gained weight, tired, have acne, cramps erratically throughout month, never know when my period will show up...some months it does not, some months it lasts 4 days (like last month), and I always feel bloated - esp. in the abdomen. I've even wondered on occasion...am I pregnant?? why do I feel so bloated?? One other weird thing, since I started running this year, I get this weird sensation that I have to go empty my bladder...this also occurs while doing intense stomach crunches...but it is not incontenance..nope never have bladder problems...it is just this funky feeling - sometimes almost a burning feeling around my uterous. Have not seen anyone post this - but it did not happen before Mirena when I ran or did sit ups...now it does - doubt this is coincidence.
Some of these symptoms truely could just be simply the result of ovulating again - that is what my Dr. told me...that on the pill I never released an egg...so now my body was getting used to ovulating again. Well...if that is the case, I just can not stand it anymore...I get it removed June 26th - next week so hopefully I'll be able to post back that these symptoms are gone or have removed. Going to go on the pill again...which has its own side effects...but I sure did not have as many when I was on it. Husband has offered to go under the knife to take care of him...but I'll see how the pill does again. Hoping to reclaim my life and actually lose weight as I've been dieting and exercising while on Mirena to no avail!

mirena DOES NOT prevent ovulation!! meaning you will still ovulate, but the sperm and egg cannot implant themselves which in turn will cause a miscarriage!! This is the same for all iud's, For some unknown reason docs will not tell you this, but my doctor did and strongly advises not to use iuds!! You will get pregnant! You may think your having a heavy period but really you could be passing a dead fetus! Sorry to be so blunt, please do research before you choose this method of birth control

I've been on this drug for almost two weeks. About one week in I noticed my ankles were swelling. They look like an egg has been cut in half and applied to each side. I rarely have any swelling. It's not painful but looks bizarre. I've also been having tingling/numbness on the bottom of my feet - mostly the ball of my foot and up into my toes. In addition I'm having tingling in my forearms and hands, also my thighs, and a bit in my buttocks. It's bizarre. At first I just thought I'd pulled a muscle somewhere but as it has progressed I've decided it must be associated with the doxycycline. I have two more pills left and I'm hoping everything subsides once I'm done with it. The only painful thing was a neck crick, which I'm not sure was associated with the drug, but could have been. Also, I've had charlie horses in my legs probably a half dozen times since I've been on it. I haven't had one in probably 10 years prior to this. I've never noticed this kind of side effect with a drug. It has certainly cleared up the infection that wouldn't go away and as long as all these side effects go away it was worth it - no question - but these are odd side effects.

i took zoloft around 6 yrs ago for 7 months and it helped me with anxiety tremendously, fast forward : i've been on zoloft, about 14 months, 50mg to start, and after an auto accident in july which caused increased stress and anxiety, 100mg a day. nov 2008 i weighed 134 @ 5'3", today Sept 1 2009, i weigh 152, and sometimes it is a bit higher!, i am not taking my zoloft daily anymore and in fact, after a friend told me he heard it may cause weight gain in some people, i only take 1/2 my pill (so, 50mg).
-- By petra7bat | Reply | Private Message mei do sometimes feel the dizziness/egg-for-a-brain feeling, but the weight gain, the increase appetite, the night cravings (which i did not have before) are driving me downhill/depressed. zoloft has helped my anxiety both times greatly, it mellows me so that i'm not worrying 24/7 BUT, the increased appetite, the eating to make me feel good--which i have NEVER ever done before--is not worth the inability to lose weight, fit in my clothes, etc. i have been consuming healthy coffee for the past 6 months and thanks to God, it has helped me with these things, the main reason i started it was because a lot of people have had their appetites curbed, but i guess not for me: my blood pressure, which skyrocketed after the auto accident July 2008, was around 189/110. after 2 to 3 weeks of this amazing coffee (not expensive either and tastes awesome), it is around 130/77 most of the times that I check it. . I now have no cravings whatsoever to alcohol & sweets, no more jitters or stomach burning or caffeine crashing either, a lot less headaches and I used to get nauseous from too much regular coffee too!;no more muscle twitching either. My allergies to oak and other crap have improved as well I'm thrilled to report. I have a better sense of well-being with I'm sure the coffee. I just hope that by cutting down on the Zoloft NOW more so than ever after reading these posts, will enable me to lose this weight--it seems that even though i am more physically active now, due to my feeling a bit better after the auto accident injuries, and eating more salads, I still cannot lose this flabby disgusting, making-me-depressed, weight.
