My Avelox experience has been hellish! I took 10 days of Avelox in the first part of May, 2009. Today is July 12.

By day 3 of taking this drug, I had severe welts all over my face, I tried to get an emergency appointment with my HMO doctor. He was on vacation. I had an emergency appointment with my HMO dermatologist, who gave me an alternative rosecea cream. (this WAS NOT rosecea.!)

Ever since I have taken this drug, my skin gets blotchy, itchy, swollen and extremely red. It begins one day, stays a second day and starts to subside the third day. It all happen again about a week later.

I've tried many different face sun tan lotions, as I have to be outside part of the day for my job. I do use hats and an umbrella. Any solution or similar experiences would be appreciated, if shared

My nightmare began Feb 24, 2009 when I had the Mirena IUD inserted. Amazing how crazy we all are! I have an almost 3 year old daughter and my husband and I are pretty certain that we are just having one child, but just in case we changed our minds, we wanted a form of birth control that was not permanent. Before I had this IUD placed in I talked to my ob/gyn about the Mirena vs the Paragard, I decided to go with the Mirena because my ob/gyn explained to me that because of the low level of hormone that would be absorbed into my bloodstream, that I should be okay and not have any side effects and I would have a very light period. I have tried other birth control pills and the nuvaring and all of them have affected me from anxiety to headaches to cold sores.

I have experienced the same symptoms as all of you. dizziness, foggy brain, numbness on right side of body, anxiety, acne, irritable, moody, bloated, headaches, weight gain (although I do exercise 3-4x/wk I gained 5 pounds in 2 mos.), hives( I have a history of allergies which I have been able to control with antihistamines 2x/wk and then all of a sudden I could not control it--saw my allergist who switched my meds), GERD which I was diagnosed with 10 years ago and had successfully arrested the symptoms after treatment), spotting, period every 3 weeks, etc.

I called my ob/gyn a couple of months later to tell her about my symptoms especially the anxiety and was told that it was probably related to my cycle and for me to chart my symptoms and to let her know how I was feeling a month later if things did not improve. Well after putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together, I figured it out that it was the Mirena that has been causing me this hellish nightmare.

On June 15, 2009 I went to go see my pcp to address my GERD issue and to start meds again. I told her that I was considering having my IUD removed because of all of the side effects that I was having. I told her that I was going to go home later and call my ob/gyn to make an appt. She told me that she would be able to remove it for me and so she did.

I instantly felt better--it seems like all of my symptoms have lessend or disappeared, and I had a bit of spotting which my pcp I was a happy person again--I was nice to my husband and was actually laughing when my 2 year old was having a tantrum in the bathtub! About 2 days later I began to bleed heavily and began to feel lightheaded, heart palpitations, cold sweat, and I felt like my legs were going to give from under me. I was thinking that I needed to go to the er. This occurred at 11:00 pm. I called my pcp and spoke to the on-call doc and he told me that if the symptoms continued that I should go to the er; I also called my ob/gyn on call doc (answering service) that I needed to have the symptoms addressed by the doctor who removed it and not my ob/gyn ( I was livid because I have been her patient for 10 years). Anyhow today I called my ob/gyn and spoke to the np who I am not very fond of and she told me that only the bleeding is expected and that all of the other symptoms are related to something else and that I should see my pcp for those. I disagree with her and believe in my heart that all of the symptoms are related to the removal of the IUD. Unfortunately I was not able to talk to my ob/gyn because she is off today. Anyhow I feel like I am feeling better although I feel like it will be a slow recovery and hope that there are no long term side effects.

What makes me the most upset is that the drug manufacture does not disclose all of the side effects, which I am sure that they are all very aware of. There are thousands of women with the same complaints and yet this birth control is still allowed to be distributed to women. Shame on them.

To all of you considering the Mirena: DO NOT HAVE IT INSERTED

I had my mirena removed yesterday as an emergency appointment after only three weeks. The cramping was so bad i had to leave work and humiliating as it is, i cried on the bus ride home i was in that much pain. I thought i was losing my mind because for three weeks i have been sad and didn't know why. I was so bloated unlike ever before. I had put on about 9 lbs in 2 weeks. I had headaches and I never get headaches. I lost my sex drive completely. and the one time we tried to have sex, it was painful. The cramps in my stomach i referred to as "my uterus falling out" feeling. my legs hurt. I was "lazy" all of a sudden and just wanted my couch. I started getting panic attacks the past 3 weeks. The cramping was so bad yesterday but within 5 mins of having mirena removed, I started to feel better. I looked my symptoms up online and saw there are so many women who have felt the same thing and I am not crazy. My doctor said the same thing everyone else's have said that i read about.."There are no side effects". Well, in three weeks I experienced things I never experience. Looking back now, in the past 3 weeks I felt "hazy". I would forget something i just thought about a few mins earlier. I thought i was going insane. Nothing in my life was making sense. headaches? Fatigue to the point of depression? I always loved walking my dog after work on long walks. For 3 weeks, i hardly went shopping unless i had to.
Its not fair these side effects aren't published. I could have saved the money and the time and the pain.
back to the BC pill...at least i know who i am on that...

I just had my mirena removed after a month of sharp shooting pains in my left ovary area..i had two vaginal ultrasounds to see if i had a cyst...the pain in my side felt like someone stabbing me....my doctor said i probably have endometrious....he wanted to do surgery right away...i had an appointment to discuss my options at the end of next week and today i woke up with cramps again and that same stabbing shooting pain in my ovary area...made an emergency appointment to see the doctor, he removed it and said it probably wasn't the best option for me since i have no kids. Thanks for the RX now!!!! I'll let you know how the next few days go to see if that pain comes back

I would encourage every patient on statins to read the recent article (Feb. 2008) by Dr. Peter Langsjoen, MD/Cardiologist: http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2008/feb2008_Alleviating-Congestive-Heart-Failure-With-Coenzyme-Q10_01.htm

The following information from this article is pertinent to complaints of muscle pain/weakness and fatigue:

"All statin drugs block the biosynthesis of both cholesterol and CoQ10, which explains statins’ common side effects of fatigue, muscle pain and muscle weakness, and a worsening of heart failure. When CoQ10 levels are lowered by statin drug therapy, one of the first changes to occur is a weakening of heart muscle function, known as diastolic dysfunction. This has nothing to do with diastolic blood pressure, but rather represents impairment in the relaxing or filling phase of the cardiac cycle. After heart muscle contracts, it takes a great deal of cellular energy, or ATP, to re-establish the calcium gradients such that muscle fibers may relax. Thus, if diastolic dysfunction is severe, it can result in congestive heart failure. In 2004, a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed that diastolic dysfunction (heart muscle weakness) occurred in 70% of previously normal patients treated with 20 mg a day of Lipitor® for six months. This heart muscle dysfunction was reversible with supplemental CoQ10."

I hope this information will be of help to patients suffering adverse reactions from statins..

I had mirena put in 15 months ago. This was 3 months after my son was born and before I had a period. Haven't had a period since. I thought this was great and a constant form of birth control. I have a SEVERELY decreased sex drive that has ruined my relationship. I have SEVERE anxiety and depression I never had before. I am now starting to get abdomenal pains. I just realized TODAY that this might be Mirena, and started doing research. My doctor told me next to no side affects, and what was weight gain and acne (didn't get either). After reading this site I AM getting it out in an emergency appointment tomarrow, because I am freaked out that this thing is causing all these problems! I was worried something was seriously wrong with me and my head! You do not know how much of a relief it is to know it's this THING inside me, even though it's so incredibly creepy. Back to Alesse for me!

First I would like to thank everyone here. I thought I was going crazy, until I find this site. On April 8, I was taken to the hospital and was put on 500MG of Levaquin once a day for 10 ten days. (As a precaution). After reading some of these stories about this drug.I started calling my doctors. The nurses would tell me it is not the drug and to continue to use it. Finally after calling all the time ,a nurse told me I needed to be seen Stat. I was then given an emergency appointment with a new Doctor. He look at me and asked what medicine I was on. (Levaquin). He took me off of it right away and gave me three different medicine in hope that this can help. (My Doctor had a reaction to Levaquin also). I been off Levaquin for 4 days and I am not feeling any better. My face is still numb, I have a red rash from head to toe. welts, muscle pain, and cramping,it hurts just to walk.nothing stays in. I feel this drug should have some sort of warning with it. I wish you all a speedy recovery and God Bless you all
