I am 21 and have been on birth control since I was 10 to help keep my periods regular. I have to say that this is one is not so great, it's horrible. This is my fourth pack of this pills, at first I thought the emotional out burst and mood swings would go away. I thought wrong they got worse and I have even more. I have taken two pregnancy tests because I feel as if I am pregnant but nope just the pills. My breasts are sore, I am almost always sick to my stomach, head aches, my period is still irregular and they said it would get better, i am producing extra vaginal fluid, my boyfriend constantly asks "why do you seem weird" "what's wrong" well I feel weird I am an emotional mess. Now that I see a lot of other ladies out there have the same issues I do I can tell my boyfriend what is wrong are these pills they suck. This is one med. that is chalk full of side effects. And to be honest I didn't get on birth control to question if I am pregnant or not or to go and blow money on tests that aren't cheap. That's and good luck to every one

I started the Nuvaring about 2 weeks ago, and I've been an emotional mess ever since. About 3 days after I put the ring in, my breasts started to grow and get ridiculously sore and I got unbelievably moody and sad, to the point of crying all the time- at work, with friends, everywhere. I've been getting severe nausea every day, and despite not eating a lot, I've gained 5 lbs. I can't BELIEVE how suddenly these symptoms came on and how incredibly emotional I am about it. Even though it's only been two weeks, it feels like FOREVER. Part of me wants to rip it out, chuck it in a blender and destroy it forever, but another part of me thinks I need to be reasonable and give my body time to adjust to the hormones. I really like the idea of the nuvaring for birth control because it's so easy, but the way I'm feeling right now is SO not worth it. I'm wondering if my symptoms will subside over time. Has anyone had that experience?

I took Yasmin for years and was perfectly normal and totally functional. The pharmacy automatically switched me to Ocella last fall. I was ok up until around this past March. I have experienced extreme heart palpitations, horrible panic attacks and my very favorite has been the excruciating back and abdominal muscle pain (I'm on a heating pad every night for 4 hours). I feel like death. Have been to every doctor and have had every test done (cardiologist, family, obgyn, etc.) - I'm just plain crazy according to them!!! I'm 39, have 2 kids and a husband, teach school full time and I'm convinced I won't live to see 45. I have been starting to see commercials about lawsuits against Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella. I think the pill I took this morning is the last Ocella I'm ever going to swallow. Has anyone else experienced any of these symptoms?

I started using the NuvaRing 5 months ago. The first month I felt great. By the second to third month I was experiencing severe vaginal itching and soreness as well has vision problems. I kept thinking that my body needed to get used to it so I used it for 2 more months. The itching and soreness did not subside so i took it out about 45 days ago. These last 45 days have been crazy. I have been an emotional mess with crazy anxiety attacks. (I am typically an easy going calm person) I am experiencing hot flashes that start in my scalp and ears and continue to my extremities as well as itching all over my body and random intense pain in my arms. I have been to the doctor twice in two weeks because I thought something was seriously wrong with me. All of my labs came back normal so he keeps reassuring me that I am going through "hormone withdrawal" and it should get better within two months. This has been a horrible experience and I will never go on it again or refer it to anyone.

I took paxil for 6 years. IT takes a bit of time to start working, and for your body to adjust to it. So if you recently started taking it, and are having those symptoms, keep taking it. Your body will adjust. It really was an amazing drug for me. It eased my anxiety. However, when I stopped taking the paxil, it was terrible. The doctor gave me a plan to wean me off the medication. I still had the most unbearable side effects. I couldn't get out of bed for 2 months, felt nauseous all the time, was insanely dizzy constantly, and an emotional mess. I was also incredibly anxious. I wouldn't wish the symptoms I fely being taken off the drug on anyone. They were the worst feelings in the world to have to cope with for 2 months straight. So, as great at it was while i was on it, I would never recommend Paxil to anyone because of the way i felt when I was taken off of it.

I take nuvaring for a year by now, get a lot of symptoms but I just realized with my husband that my problems are just caused by my medication. After I have read all of yours posts, I REALLY think theses come from this. My symptoms are the following: shortness of breath, night sweats, trouble sleeping, nightmares, depression, anxiety and problems with my skin. Don't take that!!

Almost two weeks ago I took my son off of Singulair and he has not had one nightmare since then and he has lost 4 pounds. The bad news is that he is suffering pretty severe withdrawals, he aches all over and he is an emotional mess. I have a call in to the doctor who told me to take him off of Singulair and I'm hoping I'm not doing damage by taking him off cold-turkey. Does anyone have an idea of how long this type of reaction might last?

I am so glad this site exists! I thought I was losing my mind with all my side effects. I really didn't think to blame my birth control but all the side effects kept adding up! Enough to make me google search them! I'm 25 years old and have been on YAZ for 13 months. I have experienced the following side effects: NO SEX DRIVE! Even when I try... I "dry up" quickly! =( Breakthrough bleeding(which can be three weeks of spotting). Headaches. Sinus pain. Breakouts. Fatigue. (I can sleep for more than 12 hours at a time!) Anger/rage issues (resulting in physical violence). Emotional mess! I was prescribed YAZ because I was getting very painful ovarian cysts. Prior to YAZ I was on Ortho Lo which made me a crying, screaming, hairbrush throwing lunatic. But at least I has a sex drive! I noticed how different I felt when I was on a week long prescription of antibiotics for an infection of my foot. My YAZ wasn't working and I felt like a million bucks. I obviously need to be on some form of birth control for the cysts but I will be contacting my doctor asap to get this changed!!

I just went to the Dr. for my second Lupron injection and to get some help with the side effects. Menopausal/emotional me, started crying!!! Gawd! I went in with my list of side effects from the last 3 months (and it was long!) and wondered what was worse, the pain of endometriosis or the life changing side effects of Lupron. My Dr. is wonderful and spent an hour with me; he decided to put me on Provera (progesterone or add-back therapy) for a week to see if the side effects improve. If they do, I get my second dose of Lupron in a week. If not, we stop it all and let my body slowly try to get back to normal (although I have never known what "normal" is since endometriosis) and see how the "therapy" worked. He is strongly encouraging me to follow through with the 6 month course as that is the recommended length of time for the best results. I'm 5'8" and have lost 10 lbs. in the last three months, I'm down to 107 lbs. He told me to try and eat more if I could (although my nausea is constant 24hrs. a day) and make sure to take a daily vitamin and calcium for bone loss. He said that he has never heard of blurred vision to be a side effect of Lupron, "But every woman is effected differently." I'm really hoping the Provera works - any kind of relief is better than this! I'm still having 3-4 hotflashes every hour with extreme exhaustion/fatigue, night sweats, daily migraine headaches, nausea 24hrs. a day, life changing mood swings, and shaky hands. He kept reminding me that this only 6 months out of my life - it's not forever ... forever feels like an awful long time when you can barely get out of bed!

Hey all,
I am meant to be starting the Nuvaring on Sunday. I was on Ortho Lo for about a year but gained significant weight on it and could not take the bloating so my Dr. switched me to Yasmin last month. I have been an emotional mess all month so we have decided to try another delivery method, the ring now and see if side effects are less for me. I am scared though in case I gain even more weight or have another month of depression. Has anyone had positive experiences switching?

This is by far the worst pill I have ever taken. Before Yaz I was on Nordette, Ortho Tri cyclen and Alesse. I saw the commercials and got sucked into trying this pill. All I can say is proceed with caution. I ended up taking this pill for the unhappiness 8 months of my entire life. I had problems with other pills causing weight gain (Nordette, Ortho Tri cyclen) or acne (Alesse). However, those symptoms are mild compared to what Yaz inflicted on me.

I have always been described as happy go lucky and Yaz gave me extreme moodiness, panic attacks about my future and life, and major depression. I did have the best skin of my life and lost about 5 lbs but I was an emotional MESS! I would cry at the drop of a hat and find fault in everyone and everything. This symptom didn't start right away but each month I was on Yaz got worse. My friends coined my "alter ego" "she devil." I almost felt possessed at times on this pill. I finally realized it was the pill and not life causing these problems when 3 of my girlfriends had the same problems and got off and the problems went away.

Prior to having this experience I thought people tried to blame too much on the pill but my experience showed me just how much these can mess with your body. I switched back to Alesse 5 days ago and it's like I am a different person--even my skeptical boyfriend noticed the change. As for the acne, I am going to go to a dermatologist to address that. I will be happy to have a few zits as opposed to being a crazy woman.

Proceed with caution on this pill and watch your moods carefully. Just because you've been on it for a few months doesn't mean you're safe. The majority of my emotional disorder started about 5 months in. I do have some girlfriends that like this but most have found it to bring out "she devil".

Hi everybody, I just wanted to say that I am on the patch and it is the only birth control I've tried that gives me NO emotional side effects (mood swings, depression, anger, etc). I have tried Ortho TriCyclen, Yasmin, and the NuvaRing...all were terrible for me. I experience some breast tenderness and bloating around my period while on the patch, but the period is normal and always comes at the same time. If you have tried several pills and you find that you always end up turning into an emotional mess...I would try the patch out. It's a little annoying because it can get itchy, depending on where you put it...but it's still convenient. I would also only recommend it to women who are under 35, weigh under 198 lbs, and have low blood pressure. Hope this helps some people out. Again, it's worth a shot if you can't seem to find a pill that you like.

I had been taking Yasmin 28 for about 2 years with very little side effects. About 3 months ago, my doctor prescribed me the new version, Yaz. Since then my moods have been very extreme, and I am known as a very mellow, non-moody person! One week I'm very confident, happy and content. The next I'm ready to break up with my boyfriend, criticizing every little thing he does. The week after that, I'm depressed, lonely and very emotional. I'm in the middle of my pack now so I will have to finish it up, but at least I am aware and I will try my best to control my moods this month (mind over matter as they say). But I will definitely be switching prescriptions.

The instructions that come with this medication clearly indicate that this medication , and is typed in caps USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED IN CHILDREN under the age of 15. Please talk to the doctor about the risks and benefits before giving this to your child.

Now that is with the print out you get when you pick up this medicine from Kaiser, and other drug stores, so I am really shocked to read all these stories of people giving this drug to so many small children. Always research your medication BEFORE you give it to yourself or your child.
I have had many bad reactions, and had to learn the hard way for myself and mor my aging mom, she almost was rendered brain dead from a drug I did not research. Do your homework FIRST! I will never make this mistake again. Hope this helps someone.

I'm on the 37mg capsule - If I miss a dosage even one day, that day my symptoms are: severe nausea, emotional mess, foggy brained and completely dysfunctional. I've been taking it for 4 years now (along with Adderall 40mg & Yasmin) and I don't know if it's just this medication or the whole combination, but I've gained 30 pounds!!! I've liked being on Effexor XR because before it I was on Zoloft and there was a huge mood swing coming down from Zoloft at the end of the day. This did not happen with Effexor. Except for the weight gain, I've been pretty happy with it otherwise.

Finally! I knew it. I got on NR when my baby was 9 months old. My libido went from high to zero, literally. I was already on medicine for anxiety/depression, but it seemed to stop working, and I got really bad. I went to the DR. He changed my anxiety medication. I was an emotional mess and told him about the sex drive thing. He said it was due to stress or a problem in the marriage...Now my baby is over two years old, and the sex drive is still non-existent. I know that it started at the exact time I started the Nuva Ring. The DR swears there is no way it is caused by the NR. But I knew that was all it could be. This has had a bad effect on my marriage and my whole life. Thank God I found this site. I gotta get off this thing and get my life back!

@ Voicesi
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with mental side effects 5 months later. You are so right, it does take a lot longer to get your hormones in balance. I, like you, feel soo much better, but the anxiety, irrational thoughts, and moodiness still creep up on me at times. Furthermore, I'm working on getting rid of this self-doubt and learning to trust myself all over again since Yasmin made me an irrational emotional mess.

If you scroll down a ways you'll see entries by Leah. Leah is my sister. She had terrible problems with Yasmin and I have too!

I was on Yasmin for just over 3 years, I stopped taking it this month becase Leah and all of you convinced me that I wasn't really a sickly & emotional mess... it was Yasmin's fault!

Over the past 3 years I've been suffering from the following side effects I now believe are directly related to Yasmin:

Clouded Thinking/Poor Attention Span
Depression (I've been on 2 anti-depressants for almost 3 yrs)
Anxiety (I've been on an anti-anxiety medication)
Violent Mood Swings
Night Sweats
Daily Headaches
Feeling tired all the time
Poor Circulation
Shortness of Breath
Leg Cramps at night that wake me up
Cronic Muscular Pain in my back
NO sex drive

It's been almost 2 weeks since I stopped taking Yasmin. Already my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, less headaches and the sex drive of a teenager! From what I've read here it sounds like things will continue to improve in the next few months. I'll keep you updated. Thanks everyone!

I just went on Yasmin a week ago and have been a mess! I haven't been on a BCP in over 4 years because of problems I had before, and I have two friends taking Yasmin that swear by it, so I thought I would try it. I have been an emotional mess- experiencing depression, severe mood swings and lack of energy all this week! My breasts are also now two completely different sizes - my left breast feels like it weighs 50 lbs and is completely swollen! I also am starving all the time! I didn't think it would take such a short time for symptoms to kick in, and I am shocked that it has. I thought this wasn't normal, so I have been researching other options on the internet. I was shocked to discover the high dosage of progestin in Yasmin - 3 mg which is 3x the normal amount of other BCP's. I wonder if this can be attributed to so many girls having problems with it. I also would like to apologize to my husband for having to put up with me for the past week. After reading all these other posts I am quitting today and giving my two other packs (which cost me $60) to my girlfriend who swears by it. I think I am going to try a lower dose hormone such as Alesse or Mircette.

my 3 1/2 year old son has had problems with focusing, hyperactivity at times, decreased concentration and inability to complete tasks. He has trouble falling asleep at night. Had him evaluated for this. Pediatrician suggested that it could be the zyrtec, since symptoms started about a year ago. MD stated that 2 other mother's started their child on Singular and then stopped the Zyrtec and saw an improvement in child's concentration. Will see

I am 24, and was diagnosed with endo at 18 after suffering excrutiating pain since I was 11 when the "curse" started. I started lupron for a six month period prior to my second lap, and I felt hot flashes more than anything. I was so excited about not having any pain that I forced myself to ignore anything else. After the surgery, I felt pain during my periods, but it wasn't bad at all. Slowly, but surely, the pain returned, and became just as bad as when I was 18.

Last year,(spring of 2003), I couldn't take it anymore, and none of the painkillers worked at all, so my Dr. put me back on lupron in Sept. of 2003.

I HAVE NOW TAKEN LUPRON FOR 21 MONTHS OUT OF MY LIFE!!! It was my choice to do so, because of the pain, and in hopes that I am saving a few eggs in my one ovary. I still experience hot flashes, but not as bad or as frequent as before. The bad news is I have gained 40 pounds, and exercise does NOT help. I do have migraines, but only once in a while, and I do have trouble remembering a lot of things. I constantly forget words, to pay bills, and even names of people I see everyday.

THE WORST IS THE WEEK BEFORE THE SHOT IS DUE. I BECOME AN EMOTIONAL MESS, CRYING, SHAKING, DEPRESSED, AND VERY NEEDY. Nothing helps, but when I get the shot, I'm ok. I tell my fiance it's my estrogen fighting testosterone, and he seems to buy it. Inside I'm paranoid.

I am also having trouble with my eyes. It's hard to focus on anything, they feel itchy, watery, and the pain from the migraine is worsened when I can't get my eyes to focus.

I plan to stop the shot in sept of 2005, and hope to start a family. IF THERE IS ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS TAKEN LUPRON FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT ******
