Eosinophil symptoms and conditions

Hi everyone
My little boy who is nearly two was put on Singulair as a preventative.
I did check on forums when we started using Singulair and I was concerned that there has been descriptions of negative affects. Always trying to be objective I rationalised that the people in this forum are a small part of the greater Singulair population and as a result there was a low risk of negative affects on my little boy.
I have to say I think I was wrong. As soon as he was using Singulair, he had restless nights of sleep. Every night he would cry off and on until 2am and I guess he was so tired he slept. During the day he was very short tempered and became upset very easily. We put this down to tiredness. After 10 days of the lack of sleep for parents and little one, we told our doctor.
He advised to take him off Singulair for 5 days and make observations and then put him back on. Last night, his first night off Singulair was bliss. Not a sound. He had a great sleep. As I type he is now having another great sleep.
Let us see what happens after 3 more days and after putting him back on Singulair.
It would seem that if we are correct and that Singulair is a cause of an issue for my child, am I a quasi beta testing laboratory for a drug?

UPDATE: Our nightmare with SINGULAIR has not ended! After reading "conerned citizens" report discussing the possiblility of Singulair causing asthma blew me away. My son was put on this drug for food allergies not asthma b/c they thought of his two anaphylaxsis episodes in 5 days. 1 food related the other unknown (maybe outdoor mold?) He had no prior issues with breathing.

He has been off of it for almost 2 weeks however over the last week he has slowly developed some breathing issues. After getting off of it, he still has his ear infection from the second day of being on it and last Friday after playing some basketball began to seem like he was winded so I brought him in. He was having trouble breathing. I called the Dr. and he said it could be excercised induced asthma. He is a very active boy who runs non stop and has NEVER had breathing issues before Singulair! It seemed to pass after a few hours. The next fews days he coughed a few times when playing and I thought what the heck is happening to him. Monday at school they didn't go outside so he was fine b/c he didn't run around. Tuesday, they came to get me b/c he was having trouble breathing and one of his teachers whose son has asthma said I think you better give him an inhaler. I called the Dr. ASAP and he approved us to borrow another child's. He freaked out and wouldn't let us give it to him. After 2 epi-shots in the previous weeks, he wanted nothing to do with that. At school the next day, we made him take the inhaler if he wanted to go out to playso he did. He didn't cough but a few times. No excercise at all. Then last night, he got really bad. He started to cough and couldn't stop to the point of gaging and it seemed as though he had developed a ton of phlem and kept trying to swallow. We ended up in the ER where we were told that he has asthma! I am so furious! I don't get this at all! If this report is accurate and my son got asthma by going on it - this will be devastating. We kept him home today from school and took him into the Dr. b/c he continued to cough all night. He is now on Flovent, Albuterol and has an enebulizer. I'm probably the only one of all of us who child did not have asthma to begin with.

Has anyone who did not have asthma before singulair now have any issues? Please let me know!

Leukotriene receptor antagonists: suspected adverse reactions

The cysteinyl leukotrienes are inflammatory mediators that bind to cysteinyl leukotriene receptors found in the human airway and cause a number of airway actions including bronchoconstriction, mucous secretion, vascular permeability and eosinophil recruitment.1 Zafirlukast (Accolate®) and montelukast sodium (Singulair®), marketed in Canada since November 1997 and August 1998 respectively, are competitive cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists. Zafirlukast is indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in patients 12 years of age and older.2 Montelukast is indicated for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, the treatment of asthma in ASA-sensitive patients and the prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in pediatric patients 6-14 years of age and adults 15 years of age and older.1

As of June 1, 1999, the CADRMP has received 41 reports of suspected adverse drug reactions associated with the use of zafirlukast and 22 associated with the use of montelukast. This article will discuss a serious and rare adverse reaction associated with the use of these agents, drug-drug interactions and unexpected adverse reactions that have been reported to the CADRMP.

I have been on Advair for approx 4 years. I was unaware of the side effects. My voice became hoarse at times and I had the thrush in the mouth. I am annually checked by my eye Dr. and was surprised to fine catarracts . this is a side effect. I developed a curvature of the lower spine due to increased osteoporosis. This is also a side effect. I was discovered last year to have some infiltrates on the lungs. I just had a bronchoscopy and it shows I have eosinophil pneumonia... I read up on Advair and these are all side effects. I have been off Advair for about ten days now and I am SOb > I think this is just withdrawal symptons. I have been on 250mgm.2xpday and 500mgm 2xpd. I am sorry I ever went on it.
