Ladies! Bayer is deceiving us!!!!!!! This side effect is not mentioned enywhere. Please, do not get Mirena. I suffered so much that I had to quit working for a month. I couldn't work, rest, live. I was only sleeping praying that pain would go away. It messed up my hormones to such an extent that I had terrible pain peeing. Went trough courses of 3 antibiotics, drank litres of cranberry juice, painkillers, herbal teas and so on. Nothing helped.
After my gynecologist told me it has nothing to do with Mirena, I visited 2 GP's, 2 urologists, another gynecologist. Some suggested even that I'm making it up. One gynecologist asked me even whether I was sexually abused as a child. I thought I'm crazy but pain was too strong to give up. I did a lot of medical examinations on my own-paying for it a lot and I'm just a poor student! I took also vaginal globules and a lot of other medicines. The pain lasted for 5 months. From the very beginnig after insertion and finished one month after removal, but only with help of estrogens. I was deceived, and my gynecologist didn't want to take it out!
I was so faint I couldn't eat. I lost a lot of weight from stress. I was white as sheet and scared to death as I though that I have some unknown bladder disease. Obviously, I couldn't have sex. During 4 months of having Mirena I had sex just 5 times, even though I'm engaged, living in a stable relationship. The symptoms still haven't gone away totally and I'm afraid what tomorrow brings. I'm afraid of nerve damage and I think a lot about that. It's been the darkest period in my life and I'm bitter about it because nobody will pay my money back for all the physical and mental suffering, financial loses (I had to quit job) and lost time when I was just lying in bed crying and praying for health. I'm not a crazy woman. I am not making this stuff up. Please, do not get Mirena.
I thought that I will have it for 5 years, I will have enjoyable sex, and as I was tolf no side effect because the hormone is realeased only locally. Thta's a lie. Also my hair and skin were so greasy that nothing helped.
No sex, pain, lost money- Mirena is not worth it. I was told it's insert-and forget-about-it method plus it was also supposed to cure my ovarian cysts. Guess what? It did not cure my cysts but made them even worse!
I am not from US neither from UK. In my country doctors don't know anything about it. One told me 'it's just a copper wire how can it affect your bladder.' 'Did you live with alcoholic when you were a child' (meaning are you crazy?)

I am 52 and had a hysterectomy at 28, so I've been on lots of different kinds of estrogens in that time. Once I went on Premarin until I found out that it is made from pregnant mares' urine ( the "mar-" in the name of the med). They are confined to very small stalls and have catheters to catch all of their urine. Many of their colts are born unhealthy, which is no surprise. If this disturbs you, remember - there are LOTS of good alternatives.
I'm trying what are known as "bio-identical" estrogens next this summer.

My other messages didn't post so I'll try again--- Depending on where you look, oral contraceptives are contra-indicated for use with thyroid medications. Estrogens bind with thyroid hormones so your body can't use them-- then you sufer the effects of low thyroid hormones, like fatigue and weight gain. My doctors have freely given me BCP even though I suffer from hypothyroidism. If you do alot of research you'll see that not only do bcp cause thyroid imbalances, but so do some foods (such as eating alot of soy.) Family doctors get next to no training in endocrinology and aren't aware of the side-effects of bcp.

And on to negative side effects--- after 2 months on Yasmin I suffered an enormous grand mal seizure and had to be taken to the ER. I have never had a seizure prior to taking Yasmin. When I looked, seizures are a barely mentioned side effect and considered rare. I"d love to know how many women have had seizures and just didn't report it or didn't realize it was the Yasmin.
My neurologist can find nothing that might have caused my seizure (like a tumour, etc). Although my family doctor won't say Yasmin was the cause, I have been ordered off of it. (gladly!) Coincidence?

I think women need to be aware that taking Yasmin has huge consequences. I had taken another tri-phasic bcp for a decade just fine. I went on Yasmin because of the low dose and thought it would be better for me. Now it has cost me weeks of work, truama to my family, and a very long, difficult recovery from the seizure. (I pulled every muscles, I couldn't think clearly, and I bit my tongue so badly I couldn't eat for days.)
Yasmin is not candy like doctors make it out to be. I recently heard and expert call bcp the biggest human trial in history. There is every chance enormous numbers of women will suffer awful consequences (like breat cancer) after years and years of use! As well, Yasmin is so new on the market none of us can be certain it is safe. It wouldn't surprise me if this drug is pulled from the market somewhere down the line. Everyone on this sight seems to be suffering terribly because of it.

I stopped taking Desogen two months ago after being on it for about 3 years (just wanted to take a break from pills). When I first started taking it, my skin stopped breaking out (face and body acne), which was nice, but my lips were dry and irritated for the first few months. My breasts increased in size slightly---they seemed to be more full (they returned to normal size one month after I stopped taking it). I gained about 10-15 pounds in the first few months, which made me feel bulky everywhere (even arms). This weight did not come off when I stopped taking it, but it seems that the weight has shifted to my mid section. Not pleasant. I was extremely irritable while taking this pill, and found it hard to contain anger once I started feeling upset (very short temper). I wasn't so much depressed, it was more that I didn't enjoy things as much as I used to. I also started getting horrible HORRIBLE premenstral abdominal pain/cramping over the last year while taking the Desogen. My sex drive decreased greatly during the first 3-4 months while taking it, but it did return (never as strong as before though). Other observations that I've made since being OFF this pill: change in overall body odor (body odor was almost non-existant while on the pill), vaginal dryness immediately after periods, skin started breaking out everywhere about 1.5 months after stopping, irregular periods (start time and length), I feel much more happy/relaxed, incredibly severe yeast infection 2 months after stopped (none during 3 years taking it), pregnancy-like symptoms during pre-menstral time (first two periods after stopped taking). I guess I am shocked at how much pills can affect the body. I am afraid to start taking it again --even if my skin was beautiful. My doctor gave me a perscription for a lower estrogen pill, but I haven't started it yet--- I just feel so unsure about this whole birth control method now. I hope this helps someone make a decision if nothing else!
