Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this site. I Googled side effects of high doses of synthroid and this was the first site to come up. So, I want to encourage everyone to to report their problems/concerns/side effects to the FDA. You can follow this link (http://www.fda.gov/Safety/ReportaProblem/default.htm ) cut and paste into your browser or go to FDA and search "Report o Problem" and the page should come up.

The FDA has a responsibility to investigate consistent side effects that the public is reporting. If there is a large community out there that is going through similar side effects, then they might investigate and only then will your doctor become "aware" of these side effects when they are reported to the FDA. So I encourage all of you to to that, otherwise everyone is just complaining but not taking charge of their problem. You have to understand that there aren't many choices for Thyroid drugs out there, so your doctors hands are tied. What can they do but to tell you to keep taking it? The FDA says the drug is safe. So unless people file complaints, the doctors have to keep prescribing it.

I had part of my thyroid removed in 2007 and have had to take Synthroid ever since. I really fought my Endocrinologist on Synthroid and eventually found a nurse practitioner who interned at my endocrinologits office and is very open minded to alternative medicines and she really listens to her patients. I am very sensitive to medicine as well. My dose was just increased in January to .75mg. Everything was okay until February when I started having really noticeable side effects: rapid heart rate, excessive sweating (I sweat a lot anyway, but this has been bad), anxiety, depression, flushed red face that will not go away and comes on at any time, shortness of breath(I am very active) irritability and excessive mood swings.

At first I thought maybe I'm menopausal. I'm 40 so it is likely. But my mother has all of her thyroid removed and she immediately said, "It's your Synthroid dose." So I am going to visit my doctor this week and I will tell her there is a community out there that is complaining about Synthroid. The first thing she will say, "As long as the FDA finds it okay, what can I do but continue to prescribe it." But she will probably lower my dose. She use to prescribe the organic naturally compounded drug for thyroid by Armor I"m guessing because she is very open to natural drugs, but she said she had to stop because so many of her patients were complaining about something about the natural hormone, not sure what. But I do know that she liked it and preferred it to Synthroid. But she did listen to her patients and stopped using the natural hormone because people didn't like it or something.

I will let you know what she says. But please, I encourage everyone to go to the FDA site and file your complaint. Who knows, maybe it is the binding agent Acacia gum that's causing a lot of problems. But it sounds like it needs to be investigated. I mean Synthroid has a huge market here with so many people on it and little choices. So why should they change it? People are stuck with HAVING no choice but to take it because there are no other choices. Also, maybe all these complaints will bring back the Armor compounded drug or maybe that will be "tweaked" more for the general public. Who knows, but nothing will change unless everyone takes step forward and demand change.

Good Luck to everyone but lets march forward together and push to make the FDA look at this drug closer.

I had a pulmonary saddle embolism in December 05 after a knee surgery which I didn't need and I am scared to death that my Doctor will eventualy take me off the Coumadin. She stated "indefinitely" but, one never knows how long indefinitely is by Doctors standards. I have side effects from other medications I am taking but I feel safe taking my Coumadin. I see the Coumadin clinic Pharmacists every four weeks unless a problem develops, like massive bleeding under the skin, additional other meds.

Regardless what Coumadin could do to me, I cheated death by a few minutes and I hope this medicine will keep me alive awhile longer. I also have a green filter installed, so lets hope for the best.
