Hi, i'm 24 and i've had my mirena coil fitted now for over a year. I have been experiencing cramps, bleeding, headaches, tiredness, dizziness and aches in my legs but never thought anything of it. Until now when my cramps are severe in my tummy and lower back. I can describe them as a few things, labor pains, severe period pains and also appendicitis pain. its not my appendix, as I had it taken out years ago. I recently went to my GP who advised that I have a pregnancy test just to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which came back negative. She advised that I should take regular paracetamol for the pain and see how I go. But they don't seem to disappear. I now have the same cramps but now also my bum area as well as my tummy area and lower back when I go to toilet whether for a number 1 or number 2, and it is excruciating which makes me cry. I also recently had intercourse with my partner, and the cramps came back with a vengeance, and i was in so much pain, i almost called an ambulance. I have no idea as to what I think it is until I started writing my symptoms into the internet and came back that it may be my mirena coil. I never thought anything of it at first, but after reading other peoples side effects of the coil i'm beginning to wonder. Some people are saying that the coil had pierced there uterus and infected their ovaries, and they suffered with the same side effects that I am experiencing. I am scared as to what I think it may be, in case my coil has done the same. I have also noticed that i cannot feel my coil strings but at the same time I have not experienced any bleeding. Could anyone give me advice. Thank you N.

I took this drug for 9 days of a 10 day prescription. I suffered from insomnia, but didn't connect that to the meds. On day 9 I awoke with slight pain in one knee. As the day wore on, that pain got acute and spread to the other knee, elbows, shoulders and hands. I thought perhaps it was a severe attack of osteoarthritis, but that didn't seem right. Three days later in a newspaper column called "The People's Pharmacy" I read about Levaquin causing severe tendon problem. A light went off in my head and I heard a "Boing!" It is now day 5 of my symptoms, some of which have abated. I still have to wear a knee brace on one leg, can't bend either knee very far, and am in acute discomfort. I took some naproxin to alleviate the inflammation and it seemed to work, but I won't take NSAIDS for a long period of time. I'm furious. Neither the doctor nor the instructions for the medication warned me of this side effect. Now I'm left to hope this goes away with time and I can walk comfortably again without this giant brace on my left knee. I remind myself of Igor in "Young Frankenstein!" Sleeping is uncomfortable as well - I awoke in severe pain last night because I had rolled onto my side and my right knee was resting on my sore left knee. Not good. I'm furious.

I was given nuvaring to stop heavy periods and excrutiating cramps, my dr. directed me to insert the ring every 28 days for 3mths then take it out the fourth week and have a period put it back in on the seventh day and keep repeating this every 3mths giving me a period a total of 4 times a year. The first month was fine but unfortunately 2 weeks into the second month everything went downhill and I had to pull it out. First there was bleeding then i was nauseous, breast were sore, terrible cramps, lower back pain, headaches and i want to sleep all day not sure about moodiness b/c I was moody anyway but I was'nt depressed i could have been had I of stayed on it dealing with the side effects this causes. I just took it out July 2nd and am still bleeding, cramping and have nausea and back pain, I wonder how long this is going to take to get out of my system b/c I am miserable. I made a dr.'s appt they want to switch me to something else and I will REFUSE! I was on the pill several years ago and they made me nauseous but they did help my period some but I quit those too, I will remain doped up on 800 milligrams of advil the week of my period before I accept anymore birth control it is not worth the agony it is putting us through.

Basically I have nothing new to add, but to confirm the many reports here. I under went some Upper and Lower GI testing back in May, and to clear up some infections the doctor found, he put me on a 10 day course of Levaquin and 14 days of Metronidazole. After the 2nd day, I was very sore in every muscle and tendon in my body. I had been doing work in the garden and just thought it was from that, but a couple more days, the muscles in my calves and the tendons around my knees felt like they were being pulled out of my body and it didn't matter if I was at rest or up moving about. Getting up in the morning was excrutiating. It was all I could do to put weight on my legs, and my arms and back muscles felt like they were on fire. I also had headaches, but the muscle and tendon pain overshadowed anything else. Doctors need to know this very debilitating side effect of this drug, and prescribe it only in the most dire of cases, and not to anyone already suffering from joint, muscle or nerve disease. The flyer I received from the pharmacy had a brief warning about tendonitis..but listed it under additional side effects. This should be listed as a critical warning. It has been 2 months since I finished the prescription, and I am still having problems walking and a great deal of pain in my legs. The calf pain has mostly subsided, but the muscles in my calves still feel very tight and the tendons around my knees feel sore all the time. This is a very dangerous drug!

I'm in a living hell because of prednisone withdrawral. Was on the other coast of USA and my knee gave out (have severe OA with no cartilage left). Had cortisone injection but didn't work after one week. Went back to dr. and got prednisone injection and prescribed 60mg / day. I had a schedule for tapering off, but as soon as I went from 60 to 30, pain came back with a vengence. I was in So. California and had to drive back to upstate, NY, so i had to go back to 60mg. I returned to NY with only 4 pills left. Went down to 30mg/day in Georgia, then 20 in N. carolina. I feel like death warmed over.
I am now taking 10mg / day and i'm having full body muscle spasms daily which are excrutiating. I gained weight and diabetes is difficult to control to under 250. My dr. said he will not give me refill, but I see him tomorrow and will tell him what it's been like. I can't sleep unless taking 20mg vicodin and 1050mg. carisoprodol and 5 benedryls. then only sleep 3-4 hours and wake up to cramps unbelievable.
When on the 60 per day and the IM injection, the pain in knee almost disappeared. Now, it is back plus every side effect from the prednisone. If this is hell, I feel as if I'm in it. Can't be cool, can't be warm. Either sweating bullets or chills. Definitely not the "miracle drug" it's touted to be. Good luck to my fellow sufferers. Keep the faith, believe this too shall pass. -Jay

Until I read some of these stories, I didn't know it might be the Levaquin tearing my whole body to pieces. I have been on 750mg. once daily for 2 weeks now for a severe sinus infection. I have 9 more days of it, but I'm calling my doctor in the am. I've had diarrhea for 2 weeks, and increasing muscle and bone pain that started in my lower back, now down through my legs, hands and fingers swollen and going to sleep all the time, tho this seems to have stopped...not the pain in every joint in my body is excrutiating. I really can't walk anymore, can't pick up my legs, have tremors in my hands, fingers, unbelievable pain in every bone in my body! I also have an active infection in my gall bladder and now a gall baldder attack. My gall bladder has to be removed asap. My potassium dropped to critical, 2.4 and my Internal Medicine Dr. can't seem to get it back up. I take blood tests every day to check my potassium level.
My sinus specialist prescribed this med for me. My hips and legs keep locking up and I'm afraid of what's happening to me. I have to have surgery now, and my body won't function. I will talk to both doctors tomorrow...and to my cardiologist. This medicine shouldn't be on the market. I hope there's a lawsuit...My neice went into kidney failure from Levaquin a few years ago. I didn't have any idea it was the meds until I found this site.
Is this reversible or permanent?

I had pneumonia 3 times in 2004 and was prescribed Levaquin every month for 3 months. I began having terrible burning sensations in my arms, then legs and hips. After 2 months I was unable to even get out of bed. Lab tests showed high levels of inflammation in my system and I saw 3 different autoimmune specialists trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Then I had bronchitis 3 weeks ago and was put on the Levaquin again. My still present muscle pain became excrutiating and my finger joints started hurting. Then I realized it was the Levaquin!! Thousands of dollars and hundreds of tests later, I am sure it was the drug. It is time to start an active campaign with the FDA to get this medication off the market. Maybe a few major law suits will get the ball rolling.

I was prescribed Yasmin for contraceptive purposes and for help with painful periods as a result of endometriosis. I was originally prescribed Dianette and I had a very severe reaction to it and became very ill as a result. It took nearly two months to recover after many doctor and specialist visits plus medication to right the problems caused. Needless to say, that was a really nightmarish experience.
After the problems I had with Dianette, I was then prescibed Yasmin, as I mentioned above. Initially, it seemed like a wonder drug, firstly because of my horrible experience with Dianette and secondly because it transformed my life after suffering from excrutiating periods and severe PMS since the age of 11. It really gave me a new lease on life by having dramatically reducing PMS, painful periods and making my periods much lighter, although it has not reduced the amount of time I have a period for which is one week.
However, although I cannot knock the benefits it has provided in regards to my problematic periods, it has had unwanted side effects, some that actually took over 6 months to crop up. At the beginning, all I experienced was very sore breasts and although it felt like it would never go away, it did after about 4 months.
The other problem that came up was an insane weight gain for no apparent reason other then taking Yasmin. Until taking Yasmin, I had a very stable weight for many, many years - really since I was a teenager. I have always been very, very careful with what I eat and exercise to keep myself healthy and trim. Although nothing else changed other then taking Yasmin, (in other words I ate the same and exercized the same) I gained about 30 pounds in the space of about 6 months, much to my shock and horror. I have reduced my food intake dramatically since the weight gain but the strangest thing is that it makes no difference whatsoever. My husband and I are constantly amazed at how much I have done to try to battle it with no luck. It is so depressing.
The other thing I noticed is that I consistantly put on and losing 7 pounds of water weight from morning to night every single day which is really weird to me. In other words, in the morning I am always 7 pounds lighter then I am in the evening. I went to my GP to ask him if I should be worried and he said it's not dangerous to have such dramatic water retention but it's as a result of side effects from Yasmin. I also went to him because I have been suffering from depression, anxiety and general weepiness since going on Yasmin. He said he wants to see if it goes away on it's on when I come off Yasmin in a month, otherwise he'll prescribe some sort of antidepressants to help me.
Finally, the other side effect I discovered is that Yasmin is a contraceptive in ways that I never imagined. In otherwords, my sex drive is totally dead and gone. This kicked in about 6 months or so after being on Yasmin. It is the strangest thing as I always had a very healthy libido, and yet now I never have any desire or any thoughts about sex at all, and this has been the case consistantly for the last 6 months.
I have a very good friend who got married and went on Yasmin the same time as I did and we recently discussed our experiences on Yasmin and discovered we have been suffering from many of the same side effects. She has even put on the same amount of weight as I have despite not changing anything in her lifestyle. Needless to say, I will be coming off of Yasmin when I finish the pack I am on as I am fed up with the side effects and my husband and I decided it's a good opportunity to try for a family.

I have been on 20mg of Lipitor for about 3 years now. Right away I experienced sleeplessness and nervousness awaking several times during the night. Athough I reported this several times, it was routinely attributed to job stress by my doctor. After 3 years I still have problems sleeping through the night. I am now also experiencing shoulder and elbow pain during the night...its not excrutiating but bothersome at this point. After reading alot of these emails I am concerned that side effects will continue and additional ones come up. I plan to discuss in detail with my doctor when I visit next month.

I had started taking Lamasil for toe nail fungus infection for about 20 days. I came down with fevers, chills and sweats about 20 days into 30 day doseage. My doctor prescribed Levaquinn for the fevers. I had a blood test and found my liver was very effected by the Lamasil. I was to take about 8 day of Levaquinn which I did. After 4 days of the Levaquinn my fever was gone but muscle pain developed for which I took Ibuprofen even after the levaquinn ran out. The pain became excrutiating. My calves felt as if they had been kicked and charle horsed. My shoulders felt as if they had drills drilling into the scapulas, My blood vessles felt as if they had gasoline running through them. My right hip started to get a deadened spot on top of the front of my hip joint, Pain flashed at various spots as if stuck with a knife. about two days fter stopping the Levaquinn, I had a period of three nights I could not sleep or lay down the pain was so great. Three weeks after stopping Levaquinn I am still in pain. My hip joint feels like it is being stabed by 40 Ice pics at time, it is sensitive to pressure and quick movement, my calves are still sore and make it hard to walk at times. Over the period I was tested for hepatitus A, B, C, HIV Lyme disease, Shingles Herpes, had Cat scans of my head and Abdomen, I developed Bells Palsy on my left face. After 7 weeks of pure hell and none of my local doctors culd think of any more test to give me, I went to a Nurologist on my own at the Lahey Clinic who identified the culprit the Levequinn. He tells me the pain will eventually go away in 1 to 3 months it has gotten more bearable after the many weeks but I still take Celebrex to sleep. No one thought to read the contra indications including me, least of all my doctors-except the last one at Lahey Clinic. Two medications suposed to cure damn near did me in!
Stay far away from this stuff unless you are dying- or want to.

My wife was put on Levaquin and Metronidazole together 2000mg per day for diverticulitis.. After 7 days she was so ill I thought she was going to die. Called the doc and he took her off these drugs and put her on penicillin. Yesterday she had such severe pain in her arms and in her back ( just below the shoulder blade) I had to take her to the E.R.. They tested her blood, x rays of the chest and stomach, EKG, Urine test. We were there 6 hours. All the test came back OK.They said ( they think) it was caused by a severe reaction to Levaquil. Today she is no better she still can't move her right hand above her waist and the pain in her back is excrutiating. What do I do now since all her tests at The E.R. were OK ? Will this go away after time and the drug has gone out of her system?

I am 27 years old and have just recently completed six months of lupron. I had my last shot in January 2006. The treatment was for endometriosis. I had been in pain for over 10 years when I finally had a laporoscopy to diagnose the endo. I also experienced "mild" side effects from the lupron. But, let me state first that I CANNOT take any sort of hormonal birth control because of the estrogen. Everytime I have tried BC I have had mini strokes. During my pregnancy I also had a mini stroke due to the increase in estrogen.
While on the lupron, I actually felt better than I have felt in a long time. I had the occassional hot flashes, night sweats, and a lot of weight gain. I gained around 25 pounds in four months. I don't recall any other severe side effects. However, I was also on Elavil (anti-depressant) the entire treatment. So I'm not sure if that helped or not. My problem is that now after being off of lupron, I am having horrible feelings of nausea, dizziness, fatigue and horrible headaches. I went to the doctor today because of an excrutiating headache I have had for three days now. It is a weird headache. It only hurts in one spot on the top right side of my head and hurts when I move my head quickly or move my eyes. The doctor did blood work to check my thyroid and has scheduled a CT scan for next week.
Has anyone ever experienced severe side effects after completing lupron? I am wondering if it is the estrogen coming back. Am I better off to be on the lupron? If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please reply.

I was recently prescribed Levaquin for a skin infection. I took a 500 mg. tablet each day for three days. After the third pill, I developed excrutiating head pain, pain in my lower back and hips, and pain in the chest area. I was off from work for two days. I stopped the medication and after five days, I'm still experiencing the effects of Levaquin. I will never, ever take this medication again.

I was prescribed 500mg once daily for 7 days for a UTI. At first I thought it was really good because I always react terribly with the weirdest of any possible side effect. In spite of digestive problems, I experienced none with Levaquin and that was simply amazing.
On the third day, I had a hint of bad taste. Nothing to concern me. On the fourth day, I took a niece to the movie and she leaned on mein a way that caused me to lean to my right , straining the left upper leg. The fifth day, the back of that left thigh was so stiff it was difficult to get out of bed, but I attributed it to the way I sat (though it seemed a bit much for that). The pain did not subside all day. I woke this morning and was so incredibly stiff that it was horribly painful to get out of bed. The pain had spread to an area about three times as large as what was hurting yesterday. It became so stiff while at work that I was barely able to walk. Getting out of my chair was excrutiating. It finally dawned on me to check side effects, and this is how I discovered that my notion that the Levaquin was the culprit was on target. By the time I left work, the pain has spread further and tonight it is even more intense, but my doctor has said not to take the remaining dose. I don't know yet whether the Levaquin did or didn't work for it's purpose because it also allowed for a secondary infection that is giving me some of the same problems. Now I am treating taking Macrobid again (which my digestive tract will not like) as well as treating the secondary infection. At this point, I don't know whether the pain in the left upper leg (all of it now, not just the back of the thigh) will get better on it's own or not. I'm keeping fingers crossed.

I put a message in here stating that deeep tissue therapeutic massage got rid of my intense muscle and joint pain. I was the one who when I sat up or rolled over in bed felt like someone was stabbing me in the chest with a knife. It was excrutiating! And I had severe pain in my muscles, joints and ribs so it hurt to take a deep breath. All this was from taking Levaquin Feb. 8 - 17th, 2003. Yesterday I ran sprinting races with my 9 year old son and felt GREAT! I am a 42 year old woman. Granted I used to workout a lot and did personal training for 5+ years, but had not exercised regularly in 3 years. I am telling you this so you can realize how much the following program helped me recover from the side effects of Levaquin. I told you that my osteopathic doctor recommended a heavy metal detoxification program - hot baths with epsome salts, alkaline diet(protein & vegies - no dairy or breads/pasta), massage, exercise and stretching to remove the metals - because Levaquin combines with metals in the body to form another compound. Aluminum is it's first choice to bind with, and I already knew my aluminum level was at 35 when the normal range is 0-9. I also started using "Heavy Metal Cleanse" by RenewLife Company. After 3 massages I was still feeling vague discomfort in my back and occassional sharp pains in various places, plus absolutely no energy. I have been on the detox program for about 3 weeks now doing all of the above and finally my energy is back and all of the pain is gone. I highly recommend this program to everyone. An Osteopathic Doctor graduates from med school just like an MD but they also learn some alternative medicine depending upon their interests, such as chiropractic, naturopathic, acupuncture, oriental medicine, etc.
An MD I went to wouldn't even discuss metal toxicity because they did not teach him about it in med school. He has the blinders on like a lot of MD's who think that western medicine (taught in US med schools)holds all the answers. But it does not. My getting healthy again is proof of that. There are still a lot of people out there suffering from this. Please try this program. The Heavy Metal Cleanse product just requires taking 1-2 capsules first thing in the morning and just before bed and drinking lots of water to help flush the metals out of your body. The instructions inside also outline the alkaline diet and say that you will have greater success if you follow this diet while doing the Heavy Metal Cleanse. I am now planning to get back into Personal Training. I could not even consider this if I was still in so much pain that I had to live on pain killers 24 hours a day like I was. Reminder: Tylenol hinders clearing the metals out of the body by clogging up the liver. My D.O. prescribed Hydrocodone for pain. Taking this also allowed me to start exercising because it relieved the pain enough so that I could walk, try to expand my lungs and do some upper body exercises and stretching. Don't take it before you go for a massage though or they won't be able to identify as well, what areas they need to work on. The first massage was very painful, so be ready. In fact I cried because I had been off the pain med for hours before and just couldn't stand any more pain. But she just said "you have to take it to get better". And it was well worth it because the massages were crutial in healing me. Best of luck! - Robin

I just had a mirena put in on Thursday, after the recommendation of the obgyn (she said she had one).
-- By dahna | Reply | (2) replies | Private Message meWhen I was asking my questions I was concerned about the acne, since I never really had it in my life and the possible headaches. BUT reading the above postings is not very encouraging: low libido, weight gain, mood swings. I will surely be back to post the results after a month.
Note: I have not had children, but since I was prone to severe pain/length of periods that is how mirena was suggested.
INSERTION was excruciating! "3 small cramps" was in fact pain that left me quivering and in shock. Doctor's need to be more transparent about the insertion process (especially if you have not had kids).
I will be back after my 4 week check up with the latest report. (and if need be, I will be assertive in the removal demand.)
Thank you so much, ladies.
