I took last night and felt dizzy, highly agitated and anxious. Needless to say I did not take it again. I am a little confused because I have taken an over the counter liquid expectorant with a cough suppressant many times and never had this type of reaction. I felt I should have had some type of warning about this. Luckily for me, I was at home on the couch instead of having to function at work or even worse, driving somewhere! It's horrible and I will never take it again!

my 10 year old daughter was put on singulair by an infectious disease doctor that had seen some improvements in kids taking this who have chronic sinus infections and swelling of sinus tissues...my daughter showed an improvement in sinus problems but noticed a 20 pound weight gain from 62 to 82 pounds in a few months..owed this to better health from pill and tonsil/sinus surgery...went off singulaire that summer...at Christmas my daughter caught a bad cold which turned into a potentially fatal frontal sinus infection from infected swelling frontal sinus (called Pott's Puffy Tumor)...she was put on IV antibiotics and singulair..she takes nasonex and sudafed regularly and does daily sinus rinsing...since starting the singulair again she is increasingly hungry and she is gaining weight again...slightly moody, never feels full...but the new symptom is pain in her side at the lower rib cage..this started after singulair for 2 months...the pain wraps around her side and reaches to her navel area...last night she woke up with severe cramping in her stomach every 10 minutes like labor contractions....after an hour she developed all over hives and was having hot flashes during the cramping...she had just taken her second dose of Entex which is an expectorant to thin her sinus mucous...at the time of these symptoms she has been off her IV drugs for 3 weeks...so these other posts really make me suspect singulair for weight gain and abdominal/rib pain and cramping..anyone with similar symptoms?..

I am a 37 y/o female who has had asthma since childhood. While chronic as a child, my asthma has been under control for the most part without maintenance medications since childhood. It has worsened over the past year. Tonight is my third night of taking Singulair. It seemed like a miracle drug the first two nights...I slept through the night (did not wake up and need my Proventil inhaler in the middle of the night like I have for the past 7 months). It is now 4:45am and I am up with wheezing, shortness of breath and increased phlegm. My chest feels so tight and heavy. I also took 600mg Mucinex (over the counter Guaifesin Expectorant) the past 3 nights as directed by my Asthma/Allergy doctor. When I first take the Singulair tablet each night, I feel somewhat dizzy and have a little nausea. I also notice water retention and beginning of weight gain already. I have also been more tired than usual, despite getting more sleep. I would put up with some of the side effects if the positive effects on my breathing would have lasted longer than 2 days. I feel like I need my Proventil again. I'm not sure whether I will continue the Singulair.

The guaifen is an expectorant, so of course it will make you cough!! That's what an expectorant does!! It loosens the phlegm so you can cough it up and out (unless you just WANT to swallow it). Also a bronchodilator which helps breathing.
The loss of appetite, not being able to sleep is caused by the PSE part of this Rx--PSE being pseudoephedrine which acts like speed for a lot of people.
Makes my nose a little dry but drains my sinuses and opens up my lungs, which is why I'm taking it!!

On April 21st I posted my reactions with only taking 1/2 of the 600 mg tablet that was prescribed. Today, April 23rd, I have decided to stop taking this medication. I haven't been able to sleep well for the past two nights and I have had to toss covers off of me throughout each night because of feeling warm to hot. I feel like I'm speeding inside! I have felt extreme fatigue throughout each day. This is bad stuff...take only with caution, if not at all! (Try some other expectorant)

November 30, 2009 at 11:30pm took one tablet of the over the counter UP+UP ( the store brand I think ) It contains Guaifenesin 400mg as an expectorant and Dextromethorphan HBr 20mg as a cough suppressant. It started working in less than one hour. I thought wow! this works better than Benadryl for congestion and cough control, now it is 5:16am December 1,2009 I could not fall asleep at all. I tried to wrap up more snugly to be warmer in my thick comforter and still can not sleep.I am going to return the medicine and get my money back. I will not use it again!!
