Have been taking Fosamax for 2 years until stopping 5 weeks ago at the advice of my gynecologist. It never occurred to me to associate my joint and muscle pain to this medication, it felt like I had generalized arthritis. I started to get informed online, to find out that my terrible problem stated with Fosamax. I am now feeling better from most of the pain, however I am still suffering from extreme pain in my right buttock muscle, keeping me up at night, to relieve the pain I am taking tramadol which only helps during the day. Is there anyway that this Fosamax side effect can be reversed? If anyone is experiencing what I just mentioned, please let me know, I am afraid that this horrible pain is permanent.
Many thanks.

This is my Mirena story. I got it inserted just over 4 months ago. Other birth controls were not working very well for me, as I had irregular bleeding with them often. So my doctor recommended Mirena. Insertino was awful. It hurt terribly. I almost passed out in the office from the pain (and I am not a wuss when it comes to pain). On the drive home I had to pull over to throw up - I was so nauseous from the pain. The extreme pain (which, to me, was worse than when I was in labor) lasted for a few days then subsided.

I bled for 30 days straight after insertion, which was awful. I also have experienced hair loss, acne, irritability and weight gain (without changing my diet and exercise levels). Over the past four months I have also had awful back pain and extreme cramps that seem to come randomly. My periods come and last 10 days.

Recently, I decided that I'd had it with the Mirena. I went to the doctor today and had it removed. After talking with her about my side effects, she was very supportive in my decision to have it removed. She believes I may be overly sensitive to the progestin in it. Removal was super-quick and easy and virtually painless. I'm looking forward to life without this thing!

Within 5 hours of first dose, I had "severe body aches" like those with the flu. My joints and muscles hurt so much that night that I had to call my parents to help me take care of my kids the next morning. I told the doctor who prescribed it, and he said to try to stick it out for the week...what horrible advice! Thinking it was crazy advice, I reluctantly took doses 2, 3, and 4 and experienced the joint/muscle pain each time, but I guess I just somehow tolerated it as if I had the flu. My hands became rather puffy as well. After the 5th pill, I woke up in the middle of the night with HORRIBLE joint and muscle pain, which was so awful that I could barely move; I was able to move a little bit, with extreme pain all over my body--particularly my knees, wrists/hands/thumbs, feet, and shoulders. I felt and heard unnusual snapping, cracking, and popping all over my body when I would move around at all. I stopped the med immediately, and noticed some improvement over the next several days. It has since been 9 days since the last dose, and I still have considerable pain in my knee, my thumbs/wrists, and arms. Unable to do my regular exercise, I tried gentle swimming and light water aerobics several days ago, but found even that to be too painful to do. I'm still unable to pick up my young children, drive without pain (mostly in right knee and muscles connecting to it, when pushing the brake) and am still somewhat limited in typical daily activities. Also, for the last 5 days or so, I've had a strange nodule present on a tendon in my thumb which has been hurting since taking the antibiotic. This has been a very frightening experience, to say the least.

I have been on Yasmin now since around 2004-2005.

I just recently started experiencing really severe mood swings, I would go so far as to say that I have become enraged over things that are so insignificant and that would normally would not bother me even on a bad day. This anger that usually starts right before my period made me start thinking that it might be from my birth control, even though it has only been an issue over the past six months. I have never in my life suffered from PMS, so this was very out of the ordinary for me, but I just assumed I was over stressed and ignored it.

I started looking up side effects of Yasmin, and came across this site which sent me into absolute shock.

Everything listed here by other people, I have experienced over the past four or five years. It all makes sense to me now after reading about other woman's experiences while taking this medication.

I started seeing a GI doctor in 2005 because of extreme diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, dizziness. They ran multiple tests and scans, I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy which showed irritation. I've been on multiple medications for what they assume is IBS. I was also diagnosed that same year with asthma because of extreme shortness of breath. I am on asthma medication and inhalers because I get very short of breath with exercise which was never an issue in the past. I was 110 pounds, and healthy and active in 2005. I then started to gain weight, and at my heaviest I reached almost 180 lbs (and I am only 5ft 2in tall).

I have since lost weight, but can't seem to get below 140 lbs no matter how much I try. In March of this year I started having extreme pain in my right upper abdomen, and was told I had gallstones and needed to have my gallbladder removed.

It is just makes me so angry to know that no one is doing anything about this and this medication is still being prescribed to women. It angers me that my doctor's knew that I was on this medication and never once questioned that it may be the birth control making me sick. I don't even think the doctor's are aware themselves.

I have been on birth control since I was sixteen to help regulate my periods, and I am now twenty-eight. I have always had difficulty with the pill and have tried many different types of birth control medications. My doctor recommended Yasmin to me because they though I might have poly-cystic ovarian syndrome even though the tests never confirmed it. I will take my chances because I am not taking birth control ever again!

Hi
I first used the ring 3 years ago when i got married. ever since then, I've had extreme pain upon penetration. Basically, we haven't had intercourse for 3 years. My vagina burns like crazy, like sand paper every time my husband penetrates. I also haven't menstruated in 3 years. So far, doctors have not been able to treat the problem. I am going to an endocrinologist now who will prescribe hormones short term for my period. Has anyone had a similar experience? I would appreciate any feedback, advice, doctors, etc.

Hello,
How long do side effects last after completing steroid treatment? I've been off of pred for 4 months for crohn's first time. I was on 40/30/20/10 for a 6 week period. When I got to 30 my legs went into extreme pain. They felt like they were on fire, burning knees. Went to several doctors. One said steroid withdrawal, one said inflammation of nerves from Crohn's. Neurologist put me on neurontin to get off of the pain meds. I am still in excruciating pain and wondering if it really is steroid withdrawal. I can barely walk at times with extreme sharp pains, like someone is stabbing me in the legs. Can't stand for long periods of time and pain pills barely touch the pain. During steroid treatment, they gave me 3 rounds of Dilaudid in the ER and I was still crying, and I don't cry. Has anybody ever had this effect this long after being off the drug??

Hi I'm 19 years old, I've been on the NuvaRing for about 4 months now and I'm taking it out this weekend to switch to the pill. I loved the convenience of it and not having to worry about taking a pill everyday and it was always comfortable. But I've noticed in the past 3 months or so that all I do is sleep! I've experienced the worst fatigue of my life and I've been really depressed for no reason and have no interest in doing anything which is not myself at all. I've had crazy mood swings where I'll be screaming or crying one second then laughing the next, absolutely no sex drive and always dry during sex, every little thing irritates me, i'm always hungry but have only gained about 5-10 lbs, I'm bloated, my skin is always itchy and extreme vaginal itching, I've had a yeast infection, a urinary tract infection and bacterial vaginosis all in one month of using NR, and I've noticed I've been stuttering here and there as well? I was always recommending the NR to my friends because of it's convenience but after reading this I realize that all of my symptoms are due to NR and I do not recommend this anymore!

Hi All,

I am so glad that I found this group of postings. For the past 5 days I have been experiencing muscle pain which began on the inside of my left knee day 1. On the second day I had significant pain in both calf muscles as if I had begun a new calf workout routine(I haven't) as well as pain in the large back muscle that runs down either side of the spine. Day 3 I noticed serious pain in my forearms and wrists. The forearm pain is causing hand cramping and my thumbs don't seem to function properly. I tried to sign a credit card receipt today and could barely grip the pen. I now have pain in my neck muscles as well.

I know I have taken Levaquin in the past 6 months, I am just not exactly sure when it was. I am definitely going to research that. I went to the Dr. yesterday to discuss my muscle pain. He took 2 viles of blood. He said he is going to check for Lyme's disease and other infection. I am hopeful it is not something serious. I must say thought, many of the posts above sound a lot like what I am experiencing. I am going to be beyond angry if I have a permanent condition from taking Levaquin. Some pain I believe I can deal with. It is the current poor function of my hands I am most concerned with.

I wish all of you the best in recovering. If my condition turns out to be something else I will repost.

I DO NOT SUGGEST MIRENA TO THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER HAD A CHILD! I'm having my mirena to be removed this Friday! Because i can't stand it anymore!! I had Mirena for a year and the cramps have never subside but have become worst! The cramps starts from my right buttock and extends it to my thigh! It is terrible and most of the time, it last for the whole night, i couldn't walk nor sleep nor move once it happens! It happens at least twice a month. It is even worst after doing sports!!! Mirena totally ruins my life for that whole year!! No sport, extreme pain and fatigue and depression!! I cant wait to get it out of my body!! i rather take pills!

Hi I am 21 years old and have been on the Nuvaring for about a year now. I have experienced many of the symptoms you have all spoken about. Hair loss, decreased sex drive( which scares me because i am so young and i am in a serious relationship in which my boyfriend has a high sex drive ( he 22) and he noticed my sex drive dwindling and wanted to know what changed. It has been a huge problem in our relationship.) I have not experienced weight gain that i have noticed. But i experience extreme pain/burning during and after sex. One of the side effects of the nuvaring is vaginitis which has pain n burning as its side effects. I have been to several doctors for the pain as it is disrupting my sex life and making sex unbearable at times. However they all dismissed the nuvaring as the cause and suggested that it may just be a mindset and i need to get into sex more. Which i think is bull im 21 and very much in love with my boyfriend and have a healthy sexual relationship so having a negative mental state word that seems ludacris to me. I have had std sti blood tests and been tested for yeast and blatter infections. Nothing seems to be wrong with me but i know i have never experienced this before and the nuvaring has been a constant through the pain. If anyone has experienced anything like this please let me know.

I am a 43 year old with two children (18 & 21 years), happily married for the past 23 years. I had a Mirena inserted in April 2007 following a year or so of extreme pain, irregular bleeding etc etc. Polops discovered as a result of testing etc which I was told could be the cause of my problems. Gyno suggested Mirena as a new treatment plus removal of polops, decided to give it a go,
Now in June 2009, I still have spotting (sometimes bleeding) 2 - 3 weeks of every month, incredible tiredness, aching, headaches, sore joints, bouts of depression (we call it sadness) for no reason, reduced sex drive (sometimes zero), difficulty concentrating, some memory loss (may be aging), spots have appeared on my face, bloating, increased fluid retention and my breasts have gone up 2 sizes (along with my clothes).
Before Mirena I had lost 80lbs and attending gym everyday (running up to 11klms per day), in the past 2 years I have gradually gained 30lbs with no diet change (although lately I have given up and eat too much) and I only go to gym when I am feeling guilty.

I have had many appointments with my doctor with countless blood tests all apparently normal. I think my doctor thinks I am nuts (hypochondriac). No longer know what to do!!
My husband has made an appointment to see about having a vasectomy (we don't want any more children) so I can have the Mirena removed.
Would love to know which countries other women are from? I am in Australia.

PS forgot to mention I often feel sick and describe my condition as "never actually feeling 100% on any given day".

I had my Mirena inserted in April 08 with a lot of effort! First the gyno could not insert the mirena......he tired a couple times and it just would not insert. I was in extreme pain. So a week later i was booked in to be put to sleep so it could be inserted....successfully. Obviously i could not feel anything this time. I was told that my cervix was closed and that is why it was a lot of trouble. Since the insertion i have had acne on the T Zone (i have never had acne before), and i have gained 4 kg (i work out 4 times a week and have always weighed 56 kg). I have not had a period which is great, and it has not affected my sex drive. But the acne and the weight gain do greatly concern me. I am thinking of having it taken out. Hmmm....what to do??

Was on Prednisone for 11 days for an injury to my neck. I knew nothing about the drug except what my doctor told me that it would reduce inflammation in my neck and help with pain.

Well, it did nothing for the injury and pain in my neck. BUT.... I had HORRIBLE menstrual cramps and got my period 8 days early. I've had my period for 9 days now AND terrible pain in my upper left leg. I thought the pain was related to my leg and as the days went by I realized it was in my left hip! It's so bad I can't lift my leg without extreme pain. I KNOW IT'S FROM this awful drug.

I've been off of it for 4 days and the pain is still with me. I called my family dr. and was told Prednisone doesn't do that. BULL!! The paperwork I got with it from the pharmacy show "Changes in menstrual periods" "muscle/joint pain" "bone pain".

I wish I knew this BEFORE I ever took it.

Does anyone know if these symptoms and problems will go away after stopping it? I called the pharmacy and was told it will take 2-3 weeks for it to get out of my system!!

Has anyone had problems that eventually went away after stopping the drug?

Thanks and I hope everyone else is okay soon! This drug should be off the market. I received no help for my neck pain at all!!

Last December I was also prescribed Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg for mild acne. I am 17. After a few weeks of taking it my acne appeared to have been getting better and I felt quite relieved. However, after about a month and a half of taking it, I woke up one morning with what felt like extreme heartburn. My stomach felt like there was a lump in it and in the middle of my chest where the esophagus and stomach connected, there was extreme pain whenever I swallowed anything. At first I thought this was just due to excessive acid in my stomach, but as it turned out it was the medicines reaction to a virus/cold I was getting -- the symptoms were nearly like an ulcer (which is what we initially thought). After stopping the medicine for about a month, I was fine and I started taking it again. Now it's been about the same duration of me taking it, and once again I feel as though I'm developing another case of what feels like extreme heartburn/an ulcer. Has anyone else had this problem?

I was prescribed levaquin back in May for a sinus infection. Have suffered from severe side effects, worst of which being joint and muscle pain, stomach pains, weakness and hives (last dose was taken 10 days ago). This has been the most physical discomfort and pain that I've ever been in. In addition, my ability to concentrate and recall easy things has lessened.
The "Bafoon" of a doctor that prescribed this claimed he didn't know what was wrong with me after a normal blood test. My new knowledgeable doctor told me that some people can't even walk after taking Levaquin. She says it takes on average 7 days to 6 weeks to feel improvement. Being a 36 yr old woman, having to move turtle speed, and feeling like I'm in a 90 year old body is very depressing.
If anyone has any information on any class action or mass tort litigation lawsuits please send me the information. This drug is poison and should not be prescribed for minor infections!!!

Started Singulair 5/14/09. Within last week or so started having extreme pain in shoulders, hands (especially thumbs), wrists and hips. Put ti down to arthritis. Pain has been getting worse every day. Thought it was a food allergy so stopped eating fruit and have cut out all sugar. Yesterday realized that pain has increased so it wasn't the food. It suddenly dawned on me that it could be the Singulair. Stopped taking it last night and am already much better. Still some pain but not so excruciating.

About a month before my Dr. gave me Advair. After a few days on it, I went to bed and thought I was having a heart attack. Pain across my back and down my arms, up my neck and across my chest. This happened 2 nights in a row and decided to stop taking it. Called my MD and he said to stop it immediately. However, he thought it really might be my heart so I had an echo cardiogram and stress test. They said my heart was perfect. After 2 days off the med had no more trouble..

My take is that these "air" drugs are not for me. My MD is on vacation and won't be back until Wed. I will speak with him then. Hopefully by then all paij will be gone. Will post again to report results of stopping Singulair. Reading all these posts also made me realize my depression, irritability and crying has probably been a result of this drug.

I can not say that NuvaRing is the reason for my illnesses but I am a fitness competitor and athlete and have always been very healthy with the exception of IBS that was diagnosed 5 or 6 years ago.
I am 37 years old and started using NR in August of 2008. In late August I went to emergency for extreme pain in my back and stomach. They put me in surgery to remove what turned out to be healthy appendix. Since then I have been to the Dr constantly with fevers, sinus infections, ear infection, bronchitis and most recently am undergoing tests to find out why my kidneys and pancreas are infected. I have been on antibiotics 4 times since January.
I started putting time lines together and decided to research the NR further. After looking at many symptoms, I opted to take the NR out in April of this year and go back to the pill.
I go back for another set of tests on my kidneys and pancreas next week and hope to find all is well. I have been off antibiotics now for 3 weeks and no sinus, ear or upper respiratory infections for the first time in month.
This is all unfortunate because I did appreciate the convenience of the NR but I am not willing to risk my health.

Since I had Mirena put in I have had nothing but problems. I originally had it put in sometime in October of 08 around 7 weeks after I had my first baby. My husband could feel it during sex and I was constantly bleeding. In March, I went into my OB and she said it was placed too low so she took it out and put a new one in. It never hurt to have the first one put in or taken out or to have the second one put in. No more bleeding....BUT....since I had the first one put in, I am a different person. I have mood swings everyday, I have NO patience for anyone, I'm absolutely exhausted, I get head aches, I have acne which I didn't even get as a teenager, I can't lose the weight I've gained (I lost the baby weight plus some before I had Mirena put in), my vision gets blurry, I have extreme pain in my abdomen, NO sex drive, and I think the list could go on and on. I was on anti depressants before getting pregnant and after so I thought I just needed a stronger one, but after researching it, I know it's the Mirena. Due to the pain in my abdomen, I have been through blood work, regular ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound and a flexible sigmoidoscopy!!! I have an appt tomorrow to get the BEAST removed and I can't wait to be back to normal. Just so you know, my OB said you can't have sex 7 days prior to the removal because there is a slight chance you could get pregnant...FYI. I'll post after the removal:)

My doctor told me he thought I would be a good candidate for mirena because have had very heavy periods and extreme pain after my tubal ligation. He inserted it in feb 09. the last time my husband and i had sex, it left a scratch on the head of his penis. you can actually see where it cut through the skin. i am going to the doctor to have it taken out this afternoon, so we will see what follow up symptoms i have. I have been moody, tired, depressed, no energy, gaining weight for no reason.

I am 72 years old and in 1995 I had an artery blockage and had angioplasty.Upon my release from the hospital I was put on several prescriptions, beta blockers, cholesterol, Aspirin, Vitamins, etc. which I had been taking regularly for 13 years without any problems. In 2008 after having chest pain and going to the hospital my heart doctor advised me I had Atrial Defibrillation and put me on Warfarin and also told me to stop taking all the vitamins I was using along with my daily aspirin dose and one of my prescriptions. Since then I have had constant shoulder and muscle pain in my arm and leg. I have had several treatments by a chiropractor and several physical therapy treatments and the pain has not subsided. My memory has gotten worse also however I thought that was due to my age until I read some of the above side effects of Warfarin. I definitely have a lack of energy and also changed my diet due to the Warfarin. I have informed my heart doctor about the problems and he advised it is not due to the Warfarin. I don't agree with him after reading all the posts, but I am not a doctor. I will continue my prescribed dosage and Pt/Inr tests as schedule for a while, but if my pain etc doesn't get better I will probably do like the lady's posting and stop the warfarin on my own.

I am a 54 year old male in relatively good health. I was perscribed 5 mg. of Lisinopril by me Endocrinologist because the medicine I am on for type 2 diabetes is causing minor problems with my kidneys. I was told that Lisinopril which is used to lower blood pressure and be used to protect the kidneys as well. I began to use Lisinopril and immediately began to feel pain in my elbows. The pain became debilitating, I could not lift our garbage can to dump in the dumpster without extreme pain. I called my Endocrinologist within the first week of feeling these symptoms and she was surprised about this side effect. She asked me to discontinue using the drug and call her back in three to four days to see if the pain has subsided. If so, she will prescribe an alternate drug. At this point it's been four days and the pain has not subsided. How long will it take for the symptoms to clear? I'm afraid to call my doctor and tell her the pain is persistent making her rule out Lisinopril as the reason. I have decided to no longer take this drug regardless. I have also had some minor pain in my shoulders and hands.

PERFORATED MY UTERUS --- The placement of the Mirena was extremely painful. I could barely drive afterwards. I was sure that something was wrong, but the doctor assured me that everything was fine. I breastfed my son for a year (I had it placed 6 weeks post-partem) which is why I had it placed in the first place. It was considered safe for breastfeeding mothers (please research side-effects of the active hormone it releases on infants. We now know why our 13 month old has had respiratory issues since he was 5 months old). Over the year, I had radial stabbing pains up my back and down my legs. It hurt during sex. At my year check up, I asked the doctor to remove it, but he could not find the strings to remove it. After an x-ray confirmed that it was still in my abdomen, he scheduled a hystoscope to find it and remove it (he assumed that it was still in my uterus). During the procedure, he could not find the Mirena in my uterus and had to perform emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove it from MY ABDOMEN. It had PERFORATED MY UTERUS. My husband and I now know of 4 women that this has happened to just by telling people our story. WE LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN!!!! THE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS ARE UNDER REPORTED!!! PLEASE INFORM YOURSELF BEFORE GETTING THIS DEVICE.

I am 26 and just gave birth to my first child. I had Mirena put in just a week ago and was very excited about this form of birth control. However, it has been the most uncomfortable week of my entire life. Not only did I have the most intense cramps at the time of insertion of the device, but last night I awoke in the middle of the night to the MOST EXTREME pain in my lower abdomen that I have ever felt. It felt like someone was pulling my insides out. I was so sick with pain that I went to the bathroom and ended up vomiting and curled up on the floor crying out for help at 2am. My 8 week old son was crying so much because I know he was scared for how his mommy was sounding. My husband took care of him while I got in the bath and nearly passed out from the pain. It subsided about 2 hours later and I was able to fall back asleep. I called the office today and had it removed!!! I already feel like I am ME again, and without some alien object in my body trying to trick it. Maybe I should have gone with a copper one... but I think I will just stay away from it all together and use the pill or the shot or SOMETHING other than any kind of IUD.
Also, I gained in excess of 70 lbs with my son (how that happened is beyond me! I started at 130!) and was loosing it steadily since my son's birth. However, this last week I have not lost a pound and truly believe it is because of Mirena. I did not change my diet and have been taking even more walks and getting more exercise than before.
