I thought I researched this product thoroughly, I even worked with a lady who had one inserted and she said she was just fine. My specialist said it was "new improved technology, the best on the market". So I had it inserted which apart from being poked and prodded which is never nice, and him pinching my skin, was reasonably ok.
I was fine for a long time, but after a year or so I found that my quality of life was very low. I am 40 years old so put some of it down to that, I have a one year old so put some of the tiredness down to that, but whatever I did I never felt better. The iron levels in my blood are high and all other checks, i.e. thyroid, are fine so why was I suffering from:
Nausea and Weight Loss (the weight loss is the only good part)
Extreme Tiredness
Thrush
Dry Itchy Skin
Dizziness and Vertigo
Facial and Scalp Breakouts
Greasy Hair
Depression
Anxiety
Headaches and Migraines (I am a migraine sufferer anyway)
Sore Itchy Eyes
Spotting for Two Weeks (6 months of the year!).
I didn't have any problems with my periods before, I had just decided to have the Mirena inserted to avoid further pregnancies.
I hadn't been on any type of contraceptive pill since I was 22 years old and I now remember why I stopped taking the pill in the first place.
Some days I felt great, but would then feel like I'd hit a brick wall about 4pm so would have a very strong coffee to get me through the evening. I'd then sleep like a log and wake up feeling hungover even if I hadn't drank any alcohol the night before (I may as well have and I probably would have felt better).
I then decided to google 'Mirena Side Effects' and found this webpage. I discovered that thousands of women around the world are having the same problem. I got on the phone instantly and made an appointment with my Doctor to have it removed.
I had the Mirena removed last Tuesday, and within a day I wasn't so tired, I didn't need a coffee to get me through the day, or a nap, and my eyes felt better. It's now been five days and I feel much calmer (no anxiety). I'm still tired from running around after my daughter but not like before the removal. I have been having crazy dreams but I assume that is just my body adjusting.
It appears that the Mirena device works for some people, but just not me.
If you feel this way, then have it removed - your quality of life with worth so much more.
Oh, and I can drink wine now and not get migraines - yay!

I have been on Yasmin now for around 7-8 months and am shocked at the responses that I have heard. Now that I have read into this I have had similar experiences with this pill - I have been on countless contraceptive pills since 15years and am now 25yrs and heard this was one of the best pills advised by my GP but one of the more expensive ones so were reluctant to put me on it!- previous problems, migraines, high blood pressure, weight gain and extreme IBS and spots but this pill apparently would cure this!
I have always had problems with being on the pill as they make my period pains worsen, cramps, extreme IBS however when I am off the pill I don't experience these symptoms - Does anyone experience the same?????
Have been to doctors several times with pains in my abdomen, chest and had to go to hospital to get this checked several times and got scans all normal no problems - i wonder if this pill has anything to do with this?????
Since being on Yasmin have noticed changes such as depression and feelings of extreme loneliness, feeling not so great in myself even thou my fiance tells me every day am gorjus, mood swings, wanting to burst out crying, headaches, extreme tiredness all day every day, and most recently extreme weight gain to my stomach is this normal am healthy eating and started exercising more to help but seems to be getting worse?????
It's really getting me down and am in the middle of planning my wedding and find myself not being excited or getting annoyed but it should be the happiest times planning my wedding. Advice..........????

OMG!!! This is crazy! I was put on Yaz continuously to help with my heavy painful periods. About 3 days after starting it I went for some allergy testing. That night I started itching like crazy...all over my body. The next day I called the allergist to ask if this was a normal response and he told me that it wasn't from the testing and to take some Benadryl. The next day I started having these massive heart palpitations and feeling like I was going to pass out...still itching non-stop. This went on for a week until I finally called my GYN's office to see if it was possible that the pill could be causing this. They told me to stop it immediately as I could be having an allergic reaction. Within days of stopping the pill I was symptom free! Out of curiosity and desperation for relief of some of my period symptoms...I waited a cycle and started YAZ again. I have now been on it about a month. 2 weeks into it...the itching started again...but not as bad,..but now the heart palpitations are back...and worse! Yesterday my heart rate was 138 and lasted for a good 10 minutes. I have an appt, to see my primary in 2 days to just get checked and make sure that nothing else is going on. I can't believe that you all are experiencing this...I'm opting for the IUD now. Good Luck to all of you!

YEAHA!!!! IT'S OUT!!!! 20 seconds, no pain, just a little cramp and that was it. What was interesting is that I had state my case for wanting it out, to the nurses and then the doctor. The nurse even said "don't get undressed until you talk with the doctor." I really felt like they were all trying to "talk me out" of wanting to have it removed. And then the doctor said "well this is your first baby, and all of the side effects (acne, hot flashes, facial hair, rage, extreme tiredness,no interest in sex, headaches, weight gain) can be caused by breast feeding.(Spoken by a woman who has no children.) I felt like saying, are you f*#king kidding me??? Instead, I simply said, "please take it out".
LADIES, you know you body better than anyone, trust yourselves and do what's right for you!!!! I wish I would have sooner!

I had the Mirena IUD inserted on April 1st 2009 for treament of endometriosis, nearly a month and a half ago, and I am absolutely miserable. I thought I was completely losing my mind, only to find out from finding this site and others that I am not alone. The worst of my side effects are the EXTREME anxiety and now depression. I have had a history of both from time to time in my life but nothing like what I have experienced since the Mirena. Also, my hair is falling out like crazy, my face is breaking out everywhere (never before), and worst of all I've gained 7 lbs since I got this thing put in. I felt ravenously hungry almost immediately, I never craved sugar and food like this in my entire life, not even when I was pregnant. I too was fooled by my OB in that I would experience little to no side effects as I cannot take BC due to the effect of hormones. She said that the Mirena is a localized synthetic hormone within the Uterus and would not at all enter my blood stream. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I'm a basket case, my 3 yr old told me that she misses her mommy, that I sleep too much. That is what finally brought me to researching my symptoms and the Mirena it was the only thing new that could be related and so it was. To summarize my side effects in order from worse to much worse: weight gain, hair loss, cramping, bleeding constantly, libido decrease, extreme tiredness, severe mood swings, depression, blurred vision, sever migraines (no previous history) and the very worst of all the ANXIETY. I'm generally a very happy positive person and lately I can't even stand myself. I often times ask myself when will I ever feel normal again. My OB refused to take this thing out after I went in for an office visit a week and a half after insertion. She said let's not "throw the baby out with the bath water" and give it till 3 months before we can say for sure that I'm experiencing this from the Mirena. Whatever, it's been 6 weeks and getting worse. Finally today I took some blood tests to prove that I'm not diabetic, that I don't have a thyroid problem and that my CBC is fine. Then finally she will consider removing it, well newsflash lady, I'm going to demand it be removed immediately. If not, I'll take it out myself.

After reading all your posts, I just went in the bathroom at work and removed my nuvaring. I have been having many of the symptoms described here. I have been on NR for a little over a year and have noticed the dryness, irritation and decreased sex drive. I have also had extreme tiredness, but attributed it to having 2 small children and working full time. Now, I'm not so sure. My symptoms have all gotten worse in the past few months. I force myself to have sex w/ my husband 1-2 times per month. I have hip and knee pains to the point I can barely walk and then I'm fine the next day. After getting 7-8 hrs of sleep, I am dozing in my office at 11am. My temper is out of control sometimes. I feel like I want to get in my car and drive away from my life...and my life is not bad! Also, I imagine all the terrible things that could happen to those I love and it makes me cry. These are all out of character for me and I was chalking them up to stress, but now I'm not so sure. I have an appt to see my gyn tomorrow due to the fact that after putting in the ring for the last 2 months, I feel like my crotch is ON FIRE...burning, itching, but no discharge like a yeast infection. I also tried to speak to my gyn about the pelvic pain after insertion a few months ago and was encouraged to stay on it and told it was my vaginal muscles adjusting to the ring. Also, I have gained 5-8 pounds with no other change in routine that I cannot seem to lose. I actually took 3 pregnancy tests due to mood swings, weight gain and breast swelling/tenderness a few months ago!
I just hope I go back to normal soon. Anyone know how long it takes?

I began taking Atenolol/Tenormin for about 3 months now for Mitral Valve Prolapse. At first I believed it was working at indeed felt a lot better. Up until about 2 to 3 weeks ago I have experienced SWOLLEN ANKLES, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, EXTREME TIREDNESS, SORE MUSCLES, LACK OF ENTHUSIASM. If you are currently taking this, stop now. It is just a downward spiral. I recommend daily walking, healthy diet, and lots of water. My mother did this when she was diagnosed and stopped taking the drugs and it worked wonders.

Cannot believe that tiredness/fatigue is not listed as a major side effect! My Doctor believes that it is my Warfarin/Coumadin and he has other similar patient experience.
I still have my sense of humor though! (just in case you wondered!)

Unbelievable. Really isn't it ? That we listen to our doctors first, and our bodies last.
I'm so glad to have found this site. I'm having my second Merina removed asap, after experiencing the same symptoms again that I did the first time. But I listened to my doctor who told me that no way could the coil be the cause of my depression, anxiety, sore boobs, extreme tiredness. Its probably just my age. I'm 40.
All these symptoms have crept back 18 months after it was re-inserted, so back to the doctor, who is male(but incredibly patient, thorough and understanding, fab in fact) but said the same thing, as did the trainee doc who was in the room(female-altho she looks about 12)
They, both with a wry smile, said that the coil is localized, and couldn't possibly be the cause of all my symptoms- heres another prescription for anti-depressant, and anxiety pills for you- But, I thought to myself, one is a male, and one is barely out of school, how can they know better than me that something just isn't right.
So i've made the decision to have it removed again, and this time there no going back to it. i'll just find an alternative, and if my symptoms remain forever more, then I will mentally apologise to them both.
I am wondering how long it will take to notice a difference.
Thank you, this site and all of the ladies who have written down their experiences. love the internet.

I had Mirena for 1 year. Suffered from lack of libido, weight gain, bloating, depression, moodiness, extreme tiredness, anxiety, lowered immune system (seem to get every virus doing the rounds and take forever to get well), sugar cravings & occasional abdominal cramping like ovulation pain.
2 weeks after Mirena removal: mild breakthrough bleed, dry eyes, feel less bloated, loss of 2lbs but SEVERE ACNE on my chin which I didn't have before! Most people get acne while the Mirena is in, did anyone else get it after it was removed?????

I'm 18 and a freshman in college. I received my second Gardisil shot a month ago. Within the past three weeks I have been experiencing awful headaches every night, extreme tiredness and diarrhea. I have also been extremely emotional lately.
My sister who is 15 in high school has also received the Gardisil shot. However, after passing out upon receiving the shot and due to difficulty breathing, my Mom did not allow her to get the second shot. My sister has been in and out of the doctors office and emergency room several times due to what doctors believe was a pulled muscle or inflamed chest cavity.
However, after reading the similar side effects that other girls have been experiencing, I am sure that both of our side effects are due to the Gardisil shot.

I got my Mirena fitted 5 weeks ago. After the 1st week I could feel myself starting to become really low, my head began to get ‘foggy’, total lack of motivation and the headache from hell. This peeked at 3 weeks when I became very depressed, snappy, anxious, extreme tiredness, tearful, severe headache and an inability to concentrate – my brain felt it had no depth to focus or absorb anything. I also felt I was standing on the outside, looking in! I had a similar but far milder reaction to the POP so recognized the symptoms immediately.
I went back to the doctor and tearfully explained how I was feeling and how I was convinced it was a reaction to the Mirena. She totally dismissed this and said she felt there was a lot more to it than that and started talking about PN depression. She also said that in the 16 years of fitting the Mirena she had never experienced anyone with these symptoms. I assured her I was not suffering from PND, but in my ‘fragile state’ wasn’t capable of arguing my point and began to wonder if she was actually right, so what a relief to discover this web-site! I also found a great document issued by the New Zealand Medicine and Medical Device Authority, a Government Agency (http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Consumers/cmi/m/Mirena.htm ) acknowledging that all the side effects I was experiencing were all common occurrences in between 1 and 10 in every 100 patients – it also acknowledges virtually all the other symptoms everyone else is listing and states that ‘These side effects are more common during the first months after insertion’- so why wasn’t my doctor prepared to accept these symptoms when they are officially recognized in other countries? Are the drug company bonuses more important than patient health?
Anyway, 5 weeks on and my mood has lifted, deep down I still feel low, but my normal self is sitting on top of it. I still want to snap at the kids, but I can control the urge to do so! My head is still foggy and I still feel detached from everything, the headache is still there and I still can’t concentrate / absorb anything! My fingers, knees and wrists now get really stiff / sore and the back of my neck aches when I wake every morning. Fortunately, I haven’t had any cramping or much spotting.
I am due to get it checked in 1 weeks time, but have decided to get it out and hopefully get it replaced with a non-hormone coil. Heavy periods seem great compared with how I’m feeling right now!.
I can’t wait to get back to my old self!.

Well, I have had my Mirena since June/08. I had my son in May/08. I was 7 weeks pp when I had it put in. After my son was born I felt ok, no pains besides my c section scar
NOW...since insertion I have had a mess of problems. I have been a healthy woman for a long time and never had issues like this until July-ish. I am 27.
1. I had horrible back pain and my legs felt like I walked in 7" heels the night before (the tight muscle cramps, etc). My PCP told me I could possibly have a slipped disc and wanted me to go to PT. I had all my blood work come back fine btw. Since I knew in my heart I didn't have a slipped disc I did not waste my money on PT.
2. I have NO sex drive. The thought of sex makes me gag. No joke. I had sex 6 weeks pp and had a libido with no sleep. My son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I still don't want sex. As I type, I could go the rest of my life with no sex. THAT IS NOT ME AT ALL!
3. Extreme tiredness. Like I said my son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I sleep 8 hrs a night.
4. Light-headedness- I do have a BP of 110/70 so if I get up fast I get dizzy, but more now than before.
5. Started to have SEVERE pelvic pain right above my c section scar. It hurt so bad I was about to go to the ER. I was home alone with my 6 mo old so I tried to wait it out. I called my OB and they got me in. In his exam he felt a huge knot in my pelvis and it hurt like a MF! He suspected a hernia so he sent me for a CT scan.
Got the results yesterday and they came back normal. He said maybe I bruised something. But why do I have a big knot in my pelvis?
I feel like I am crazy. My bf takes my pain issues with a grain of salt now days. My OB did say since there is progesterone in the Mirena that my leg issues could be from Mirena and he was more than happy to remove if I wanted.
I still have it in and more and more I am thinking of getting it removed. My issue is I am so bad at taking pills and didn't like the Depo.
Anyways ladies...please let me know if you have had these issues. My email is arizonaequine@yahoo.com
Hope this can help someone feel less crazy!!

I've been on Wellbutrin for 3 years. My hair has been falling out more and more every month. My scalp itches horribly! It feels almost as though bugs are crawling all over it. I am irritable and have dramatic mood swings. The final straw, though, was recently when I had a blood test to find that my white and red blood cell counts had become dangerously low, and my red blood cells were swollen (macrocytic anemia).
I'm now training myself off of Wellbutrin. I tried dropping to a quarter dose and felt flu-like symptoms (chills, extreme tiredness, dizziness) and extraordinary appetite (gaining 10 lbs in week 1). I also became unable to handle simple tasks at work, and excessively negative in demeanor.
I'm now back up to 1 pill and the chills have stopped. I am hoping that I can go back down to 1/2 pill gradually.
Will my hair grow back? Is the liver/blood damage reversible? Has anyone kicked the Wellbutrin habit and recovered fully? Please help.
Thank you in advance.

I've been on simvastatins for about 2 years after TIAs. I'm 56. I had two small Strokes about year ago despite being on simvastatins. Had brain scan which showed two small areas of scarring and carotid artery scan- arteries fine. Started experiencing dizziness last year and GP diagnosed vertigo and gave me seasickness pills which didn't do much good. Since then I've experienced headaches which last for weeks, increasing fatigue (now struggle to get out of bed in morning) muscle pain which is getting really bad and sore feet (?). Increasing memory loss, confusion, lack of concentration, eye problems (when I first wake in morning my vision is blurred for ab out 30 minutes or so. I've been worried i mmay be developing Alzheimers. I've also piled on weight and the texture of my hair has changed - it has become very soft and silky and become thinner - normally my hair is very thick. Also I've had two perms in last 6 months which won't hold curl - been having perms for years and never had this problem. I've had several blood tests including for under-active thyroid and they have all been clear. I've been really worried about all these problems and did some research and came up with this site. I am beginning to think my problems stemm from taking 40mg Simvastatins so am going to stop them and book appointment with GP. Any comments/advice would be appreciated.

Reason 1151 to run away fast from IUD's. I had surgery yesterday to have a Mirena removed. I thought it would be an easy procedure and was already annoyed that I had to go that far. I am waking out of anesthesia and the OB tells me that the IUD had migrated to my abdomen so they removed it with a laproscope. Apparently it perforated my uterus.
But, How strange I am ALREADY feeling better. Here's what is gone:
Muscle aches around my hips
Extreme tiredness
I will keep you updated - and thanks for your support. You can see my other posts to read the whole story.

I have been on prednisone since November 2007 for minimal change disease, 65 mg, in May I started to decrease the dosage (per Drs. orders) and by the time I got to 15 mg all my symptoms came back and I swelled up again. I was again put on a higher dosage of prednisone and put on Cytoxan 75 mg. I am now decreasing prednisone, back to 15 mg every other day and will be off Cytoxan next month. Hopefully this will work. Right now my main complaint of side effects is chest pressure, anything I eat or drink makes my stomach swell and I feel like I can never take a full breath. I recently had chest and abdoman xrays and an ultrasound, all negative. Does anyone have this symptom? I also have moon face, weight gain, hump on back, insomnia, headaches, digestive problems ,shakes, night sweats, vision problems, extreme tiredness and hair loss. How long before all this goes away?

Extreme tiredness, ache behind my eyes. I have been on Lisinopril for about six months (10 mg). I wake at 7 a.m. and by 11 a.m. am so tired and feel so bad that I have to lie down and nap. Finally I decided to take it a night rather than in the morning since it was making me tired. That seems to be working. I started the new regime about a week ago and am functioning much better during the day. I didn't run across this comment in the testimonials so thought it might help someone. This is my own idea, not my doctor's.
