Our daughter spent her 21st birthday in ICU, Sunday the 13th. I took her to the ER with shortness of breath, chest pain and nausea on Saturday afternoon. She has been on Yaz since February with only the mild symptoms of: loss of apetite, mild nausea and some abdominal cramping. She was put on this BC to regulate her periods and relieve menstrual pain as well as excessive dark facial hair growth. All 3 of these were relieved by Yaz.
She has now spent 1 week in the hospital (2 days in ICU) and will be on coumadin for 3 to 6 months due to a very large pulmonary embolism (size of my knee cap) that was putting the right side of her heart in distress. She also has multiple clots in her right lung.
I am shocked to read through this website and see all that has happened to so many women. She can never take oral BC again in her life. There are no blood test results that indicate she was even predisposed to this type of reaction and is not family history.

I got a Mirena because after laparoscopic surgery to determine if I had endometriosis (none was found) and a D&C to check my uterine lining, my periods did not "reset" the way I was told (I was 42 at the time and they told me that I was not releasing an egg every month so the endometrium was shedding erratically). What I really wanted was a uterine ablation, but my doctor was so enthusiastic about the Mirena and had been the first physician to even contemplate endometriosis was a possibility that I went along. The first day was fine, but the second day I had such stabbing pain in my abdomen that I could not stand up straight or take a deep breath. It resolved before I decided to call the doctor or go to the er. Months followed of checking off that little calendar that I had had menstrual flow that day (MONTHS. I think I started actually having a WEEK without a period sometime after 12 months of having this thing in me). I did not go back to have it removed at that time because my husband had lost his job and therefore our health insurance. In the meantime I still have the symptoms I had before I'd gone in to see the doctor the first time (stabbing pain near my right ovary during my heavy days), PLUS constant bloating, fatigue, my hair has started falling out so bad I can see the thinning at the top of my forehead, acne no matter what treatment I use, and weight gain (~20 lbs, some I can say is probably my dietary changes since DH lost his job, but even with increased vegetables/no caffeine/decreased breads, no measurable weight loss). I had attributed loss of sex drive to the fact that I have almost always been bleeding since this was put in. In fact, I went for a thyroid test yesterday because I hadn't found this site yet. I'm sure it will come back normal. Once it does, you better believe I'm going into the doctor and have this removed. I am so angry. I used to weigh over 250 pounds and worked so hard to get down to the weight I was when this was put in and am so mad that I inadvertently did this to myself.

Hi, I've just had my Mirena taken out ( thank Heavens) and can now get my life back. The only good thing was no periods for five years. The hormones gradually ran through my system and all the side effects crept up on me.
My allergies got MUCH worse.
My skin thinned.
I felt three thousand years old , ALL the time.
It stripped a goodly amount of calcium from my body, my teeth started crumbling.
( after two months post removal, my bone and teeth density has improved out the site! WITHOUT supplements My dentist and doctor are now a lot happier)
I had NO sex drive at all.
My weight crept up with NO lifestyle change, 30 kilos! - I have lost on average half a kilo a week since removal. NO diet change, NO activity change.
I've always had slight hormonal acne on my face and nowhere else... with Mirena I had it all up my formerly crystal clear back and diarriere, bust and even scalp.
Lots of other minor crap.
Please, if you have sensitivities to the pill and other hormone treatments, DO NOT go here. I thought I was just aging rapidly- bull dust! I'm just glad that my husband gave me all the support I needed to bring this tragedy to my doctor and Gynie's attention. For so, long I thought it was just me.
Now I'm having my tubes clipped. Hormonal interference just doesn't work for me

My daughter was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) as she wasn't getting her periods, and her testosterone was high (she is only 15). She is also developing dark facial and body hair. The endocrinologist put her on Yasmin because it has the least male androgens and should stop the hair growth and felt it was the best choice for her. He said that our goal is to preserve her fertility and stop the hair growth.
We started her on a quarter of a pill and will increase it over the next couple of weeks, due to the fact that a year ago she had to take bc pills for a couple of months to stop her flow (it went on for 8 weeks and was very heavy)... Everything she tried then made her sick. So we were concerned about that again. Unfortunately, she is having a terrible time with Yasmin, even at a quarter of a pill. She is taking it with her dinner, and still, it is making her sick to her stomach. She is lethargic, extremely emotional, nauseous (she even vomited at 4:00 this morning), bowel problems, very anxious, no appetite... and this is after a week of being on it. She is also having heart palps at night when she is in bed. I spoke with her doctor and he suggested we stick with it and her body should adjust with time. He feels that we don't have a lot of options with different pills because of the male androgens and the hair growth... Anyone have any suggestions?? I don't know how much longer we should stay with this... she has missed so much school because of this already and she looks awful. Thanks....

Hi, I've posted before, but I'm back with a few new symptoms....
I have been taking Yasmin since I don't know when. I was one of the first at my OB/GYN office to get on it when it first came out. Egad, what a crappy, painful life Yasmin produces.
I seriously do not think that I have felt "well" since I have been on it. I have constant body aches, nausea, bowel problems, abdominal pain, tremendous pain in the gall bladder area which resulted in surgery that probably wasn't totally needed, leg pain and cramping (feels like a shin-splint...without having worked out), constant emotional outbursts, facial hair growth, absolutely NO sex drive, and migraines that I had never, ever had before...basically I feel like an ogre with a really bad case of the flu.
My newest "problem" is that my periods all of the sudden only last two days and are very light. I know that some people would be happy with that symptom, but this is NOT normal. One box of "Lite" tampons will last me 3 months. I think that this is the LAST STRAW with me and Yasmin. I just started a new pack, but I took the last one I will ever take this morning. I would rather enjoy having sex with my finance(I'm sure he would like that too because I just don't want to do it EVER right now), not bark at people or cry for no reason, have less body pain, and maybe...for once in many years...FEEL GOOD.
I really feel that if I continue on this crap...I'll either never be able to have children (which I do want), or I will end up killing myself or possibly my finance because I cannot control my emotions. For those of you who tout the wonders of Yasmin...I used to think it was great too before I figured out that I didn't feel this way before taking it. Feeling like shit every day of your life changes your outlook. I'll take menstrual cramps and ovarian cysts over all of this any day.

I have been on Yasmin almost 2 years. I finished a pack last week and do not plan on starting a new one. I googled "side effects of Yasmin" in a hope to see if there was a chance someone out there had noticed any facial hair growth since taking it. What I found was this sight that has given me a ray of hope. I left my husband 2-3 months after starting the Yasmin. As I assumed was normal, I experienced depression, mood swings, everything you might expect after ending a relationship you expected to last forever. I have been seeing a counselor for the past 8 months, because my mental state was not improving. Since then, I have had improvement, but the insane mood swings haven't stopped, especially the week before my period. I had attributed this to getting older (I'm 32) and was just pushing through, knowing I'd swing back to "normal" eventually. I am hoping so much that they will stop and I will get totally back to my normal self. Before starting Yasmin the emotional end of my PMS consisted of one day, right before my period started, of bitchiness. Since I started my period at 14, this has been it. No sobbing, no suicidal thoughts, no wanting to sleep all day. I would give anything to get that one day back and lose all of these other days of insanity.
I've also just recently noticed some slight hair growth along my hairline down to my jaw. Which is how I got to this sight in the first place. Funny how I put up with mood swings for almost 2 years, but some extra hair on my face has me running to the computer in a panic!! :) Additionally, I've experienced shortness of breath, and in the past couple of months, leg cramps. I have never had a cramp in my calf in my life until these past couple of months. I don't know if Yasmin is the cause for any of these things, but it'll be interesting to see if they persist. As for sleeping, I have noticed some issues, but also attributed that to the divorce.

I have had numerous side effects from Yasmin that seem to coincide with many that I've read here, but a few different ones as well. My anxiety level has been over the top and I have been having panic attacks related to really bizarre things such as feeling like the rings on my fingers are too tight and choking me. I felt the same thing when having an armband place on me while attending a carnival. It felt tight and constrictive and I felt an overwhelming flood of panic, as it seemed to make me smother, until I removed it. I feel extremely bloated and my back aches constantly. I have been sleepless for the most part and when I do sleep, suffer crazy and bizarre dreams. I have had a sore area on the back of my tongue for about 2 weeks. It feels as though my tastebuds have been scrubbed with sandpaper. I am also having problems with facial hair growth and have had stomach pain. I was on Ortho Novum 7-7-7 for 5 years and loved it. I had no side effects from it and my weight remained stable unlike with other pills I've experienced. The doctor took me off of them and refuses to put me back on because she says they are too high estrogen of a pill for someone my age (I'm 33) and since I am a smoker. Any advice?

I'm so glad I googled side effects of Yasmin and found this site. All of the sudden my mood swings for the past almost YEAR make sense. I started out fine. The pill was great, and I haven't had to worry about acne at all. Of course I gained a few pounds, but not too much. However, I'm a pre medical student trying to study for the MCAT this summer. I've been SO tired and drained and majorly depressed that I just can't seem to concentrate. I feel like I'm always crying over the stupidest stuff (AKA: no reason at ALL), and my grades are starting to suffer. Hopefully now that I've read this, I can stop taking this pill and see an improvement. It's just not worth the depression. I'm 22 right now, and until recently had never had a suicidal thought. I was starting to panic, because I couldn't identify the cause of my depression. I'm a good student, have lots of friends, and have the most amazing boyfriend and family. Life is good, I shouldn't feel this bad. Now that I have a clue as to what this may be, I can fix it.

I have been on yasmin for two years; I just quit a little over two weeks ago. I have been experiencing gradually thinning hair since 18 months ago(about 6 months into taking the yasmin.), and a slew of other problems such as blurry vision, severe depression, flaking skin, shooting pains in my head, twitching eye, (I had no idea this was related to the yasmin until I saw it posted here dozens of times!), diarrhea after eating, splitting nails, eyelash loss, increased facial hair growth (???- thought yasmin took care of that???), and scariest of all, over the past two months, sporadic leg cramps. One day it was so bad that my calf seized uo, and I ended up at the ER thinking I was having a clot; even with insurance, that ER visit and sonogram cost me nearly two hundred dollars. I feel that I've lost myself to this pill, adn I'm scared that I'll never return. It's been terrible all along, and I wish I quit sooner so badly. Doctors prescribe this crap thinking it's the miracle pill of the new millenium, and in reality, it is utter hell. My skineven began wrinkling (I'm only 32 and come from a family of very young looking women), and my hair has dried out and lost it's curl. I'm scared to death that I'm going to go bald over the next few months- (does everyone lose their hair when they go off? I looked at so many posts and not many women are complaining about thisside effect of quitting the pill.) In short, this pll is awful, and it took almost two years for the hell of it to kick in. I'd seriously tell everyone on it to get off, as soon as possible. I'm desperate to regain my old life, my old health, and my old looks. I feel like a fifty year old woman in a thirty three year old's body. I'm so sad.

This is in Response to Guest 11547. I too am taking Yasmin to control hair growth on my chin. I have a disorder called polycystic ovarian snydrome. It causes facial hair growth, irregular periods and usually is found in heavier women, but I am still thin. I have been on it for over a year. It has not really reduced the hair growth and I have considered some other sort of treatment such as eloctrolysis. I have tried creams to suppress the hair growth and that has not helped. I do not seem to have many symptoms from Yasmin. It has regulated my period. My moods are much more stable than they were with the other BCP I was taking.

Side effects are basically the same as everyone else. The worst one and the most embarrasing one is excessive sweating especially on minimal exertion. Other side effects are prednisone induced diabetes requiring insulin 4x a day, weight gain on abdomen and upper body, muscle, joint pain especially hip pain, muscle cramping, irritability, nervousness, teeth pain and facial hair growth.

I've been on Prednisone since around late June, and by October 9th i'll be off it. My face is all fat, i've gained alot of weight, i'm getting HORRIBLE muscle cramps/soreness, which is BAD because i'm playing guitar in a show tonight, and if my hands cramp up on me while i'm playing I will be screwed. Annnnd, increased apetite, I have to pee all the time, especially at night (i wake up about every hour starting at 6), i only get about 6 hours of sleep per night now, i'm getting really bad acne and facial hair growth. Also, i had a really extreme mood swing last night where i became very grumpy. Then in a few hours i was fine. And i'm 17. I don't like this drug. I'm taking it for Ulcerative Colitis, and because of it my symptoms have disappeared. I'm hoping that my symptoms don't return when i come off the Prednisone, because if i have go back on it i'll flip out. :D

Been on Prednisone about 6 weeks. I've had muscle fatigue, especially when its hot out (walking through a parking lot on a 100 degree day takes a little longer than I'd like). One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that I have lost lean body mass. I had been having my body fat tested by a personal trainer (pinch calipers) before and after I started (30 mg/day for lung restriction (62%)/inflamation/collagen vascular disease/immune mediated lung disease/likely Mixed Connective Tissue Disease/autoimmune disorder). After 1 month on prednisone, despite the fact that I have continued to work out (cardio and resistance), I lost 3 lbs of Lean Body Mass. 3 weeks later I had lost another 3 LBM, and gained 1 lb fat mass. I'm glad to have kept my overall weight down, and my circumference measurements haven't gone up, but there is definately a redistribution of fat.
Other side effects moon face, acne, depression, energy swings (up/down). Heart burn, went from 8 hours sleep to 5 1/2 - 6 average, and facial hair growth. The overwhelming hunger (not just being hungary, but eating a full meal and not feeling satiated at all) has subsided for the most part. The drug is not fun. My doctor is now having me start imuran with the hope of lowering/eliminating the prednisone, but imuran has its own side effects.
The hardest part is that the doctors don't know what will work, its guess and check...When the side effects overshaddow the initial symptoms, is it worth it?

I have ulcerative colitis. Had a very bad first flare up and was put on 40mg prednisone. three days later not feeling better , was increased to 60. within two days all my symptoms vanished. i was on it for three months and experienced lots of energy and sleepless nights . facial hair growth . could not stop eating. gained 20 lbs. it cured me for 7 months and now i'm having a minor flare up again and back on the miracle drug again. the drug helped me get better , i can deal with the hair growth and the weight gain . i felt normal for seven months and thankful for that.

Will they ever go away?????????

I experience insomnia, fatigue, snoring due to increased neck fat, moon face, painful abdominal bloating, 10 lb weight gain, increasing blurred vision, purple rash on stomach, thin skin and easy brusing, hair loss, facial hair growth, night and day sweating. I started to decrease prednisone 2 1/2 mgs. per week alternate days in early December. Everything was going well and I could see slow improvement in my condition until mid February. Since then I have had more weakness in my hands, arms legs, and increased blurred vision. Since I may have to be on a low? dose of prednisone for a long time I have some questions.
1. How low a dose is necessary for side effects to diminish?
2. Does all your hair fall out to necessitate a wig? When does it start to grow back.
3. Does the weight go back to normal without dieting? Does your shape go back to pre prednisone?
4. Will the weakness, control, and pre prednisone vision come back to allow normal functioning?

I'm a 25 year old guy who was diagnosed with IBD- Ulcerative Colitis right before Christmas. Started out on 40mg prednisone and now im down to 20mg (get to drop to 17.5 tomorrow!). At first the side effects were anxiousness, sleeplessness, and an insane hunger. Now those have died down for the most part, but I have gained 20 pounds (which isn't a huge deal as I lost about that in the hospital), my face is much fuller, my stomach is always bloated, increased acne, and increased facial hair growth. I will be on prednisone at some dosage through april...so im really hopeful the weight gain/bloating will decrease as i lower the dosage. I would be interested in talking to others who have lived through this or are currently in a similar situation...******

Eczema, severe dry skin & hair growth out the wazooooooo, extreme facial hair growth, and i now shave my legs everyday instead of once a week. I also suffer from insomnia and hot flashes.
Now the good part I am pain free and anything is worth being rid of the pain from endometreosis. I have suffered with endometreosis for 19 years. This is really a saving grace.

In addition to the rather common occurrence of the sweats, I have gained 30+ pounds since commencing a Lupron intermittent protocol. The majority of the weight gain has manifested itself in my stomach. My appetite has not increased or if so, not significantly. I exercise regularly and in most cases, aggressive exercises. I have carefully monitored my diet and have been unable to shed any weight or stomach mass.
