I have been on lexapro for over a year now. I love it. It's way better. Less anxiety attacks and I have had no weight gain until recently but im not gonna blame the meds. I was eating fast food and drinking pop everyday. I'm starting to get older im not 12 anymore.. I gained 10 pounds and have lost 8 just by not eating fast food no pop and exercise!

I was on Alesse for 3 years with no troubles except the occasional acne breakout. I got switched to Aviane a year ago and I hate it. I just went back to Alesse for several reasons.

1: My blood pressure rose from 110/70 to 160/80 in the year I was on Aviane. I'm only 24 and although I am overweight, my blood pressure has always been on the low side of normal. In the week I went off Aviane, my blood pressure dropped to 145/70. It's still high but it had gone down in just a week. My doctor's handling of this prompted me to switch doctors, too- instead of recommending I lose a bit of weight, he just prescribed a blood pressure medication which can't be taken with birth control pills.

2: Mood swings. Big time. I used to work in fast-food and having 20-30 customers lined up wouldn't bother me on the Alesse, but on Aviane I was really short with my coworkers and if we got a busy rush, I'd get cranky in about 3 orders. Not to mention, I'm a veterinary nurse and sometimes you just can't save an animal no matter how hard you try. Normally I have a very thick skin and I could leave work issues at work. I noticed, and so did my boss, that I would be very depressed and near the point of tears if we had to give bad news, whereas before I would be professional but sympathetic, as opposed to nearly breaking down in front of clients now.

3: Decreased sex drive. I'm glad I'm not the only person with this problem but it caused a LOT of trouble between myself and my ex. I used to have a high libido and now...I might be aroused once or twice per month.

4: Migraines. I'd usually get them once or twice a year, depending on how stressful work was, but now I get them if I spend more than 2-3 hours at any activity. It sucks to get a migraine when you're fishing!

5: Sleeplessness/insomnia & restlessness. I put those two together because when I DO get to sleep, I toss and turn and I'm fidgety all day. I might get to sleep at 3 AM and I have to be up by 6 AM. On my days off, I might get to sleep by 5 AM and not get out of bed until 11 or 12. I've got no energy at all and it takes me a long time to be really aware of what's going on around me.

I think the only reason I've lost weight on this pill is because I've stepped up my workout routine to get some energy. Otherwise, I'm sure I'd have gained weight. I'm relieved to find that I'm not the only woman having troubles with Aviane.

I had my Mirena put in December of 2007 and everything was good a first for the first year I really didn't have any problems just the irregular bleeding and spotting but it wasn't until earlier of this year in 09 I started to have more bleeding which was interfering with my sex life it was like it was non stop bleeding and it was SOOOOOO EMBARRASSING because sometimes when i thought my period was off when we would finish having sex there would be a blood stain on the sheet and he wouldn't want to touch me because he thought he was hurting me and not only that but I started having back and shoulder pains like crazy, headaches and mood swings and IM ONLY 19 I have a 19month old and I love her so much she is such a good baby everyone always tells me how good and smart she is but I find that even with her im starting to irritated and frustrated and I'm taking out on her and I am feeling depressed and fatigued I just want to sleep all day and my baby needs me and I just feel like crap and im trying to fight it but its so hard and so today i decided to come online and look at some of the side affects again because i did a little research but not enough obviously and this Mirena is having a lot more effects on me than I thought it would and not only that I have experienced weight gain so I think that its a bunch of crap to say you wont experience a lot of weight gain im already 5'7 159 and I was only 145 after i had my baby so that has me wondering too and I don't eat fast food and my over all diet is good and I would exercise more but im even finding it hard to do that now which i know is not me because all throughout high school i cheered and ran track and all kinds of sports and those little flutters that girl was talking about i feel those too and i don't know what to do now because my period was on for the last three months it was irregular sometimes it would be on for a whole week and half but I was with my boyfriend at the end of March and we just broke up so that hasn't helped my situation I have been with him for a year and now its June and i didn't have one this month so im praying that im not pregnant Im so confused this was def not for me maybe for some women it may be the best thing in the world but abstinence is the best alternative for me right now because Im not married and I sure as hell don't want any more babies right now Im just trying to make it now so I don't know I called my doctor and I am going to have it removed praying that im not already pregnant but I will keep posts and let everyone know how it works out

Hi Ladies! I had my Mirena inserted in October 08, when my daughter was 6 weeks old. I have been having horrible side effects that I have been blaming on everything from my depression meds, to my job, to just being a new mother.
I have never in my life weighed more then 150 pounds and even when I weighed 150 I was living with my sister that was pregnant at the time and eating fast food everyday with her!! For the better part of my life I have been between 120-130!!!! I weighed 150 when I got pregnant and 180 at delivery! I got down to 164 the day after my daughter was born!!! I am now back around 175! I have been working out EVERYDAY for a hour plus and only eating 1200 calories a day!!! I HAVE NOT LOST A POUND!!! I can not fit into any of my clothes because of this big paunch belly that I have!! I really do look like I am in my 6-7 month of pregnancy!!! I feel so horrible about myself and the way I look!!
My boobs have also grown! I went from a 36D during pregnancy to now wearing a 38DD!!! I love having big boobs but now none of my shirts fit because my boobs are too big!!
I have started getting acne on my face, back, thighs, and buttocks! I have never had acne in my life.
My hair is very oily the next day after I wash it!
I am very moody!! My husband can say something so small and I fly off the handle and start yelling!! I have no patients with my 8 month old daughter and I feel soooo bad!!! I should not feel like this and I should be enjoying her and all of her little quirks not getting mad at her for everything!
I don't really have periods! About once a month a get a short stint of 2-3 days of spotting and that is it!!
I believe that this thing is bad for your body! I am having some of the same problems that I had on the Depo! I have come to the realization that your body needs to have a period once a month so that it knows everything is ok and it doesn't need to start providing nutrition for another living being!

I am getting this thing taken out on Friday and will keep up dates on here!

I had my Mirena inserted in July 2005 and removed 2 yrs afterward. Till this day the effects are still showing. I have facial hair that I never had before. And the hair loss is still onset. I have developed fibroid cystic breasts. I have also gained a significant amount of weight that I'm still battling. At first I thought I was leading an unhealthy life so I changed my eating habits, stopped smoking, stopped drinking (which both were extremely RARE!), and cut out the fast food and replace with a healthy lifestyle. My hormones are still so out of whack that I think hormone therapy will be the only thing that will control my mood swings and help with the breast tenderness. BTW!!! If you do experience this symptom limit your caffeine intake!!! It could cost you your breasts. Right now I'm trying to make the best of my life and spending lots of money in electrolysis. Do not think for a minute that this thing is safe because it is far from it. REMOVE IT OR OPT TO ANOTHER FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL!!!

I received my first gardasil shot this year and was in bed for 2 days with severe cramps. When I went back for my 2nd round of shots I mentioned the severe cramping and my family doctor said the 2 weren't related. At that same appointment she reviewed a complete workup that I had done since she was a new doctor and I was completely healthy except my cholesterol being a little high which I knew was due to eating a lot of fast food at the time b/c of a new work atmosphere. I have now had all 3 shots and recently just went in for my obgyn annual and now I have a yeast infection that a week worth of antibiotics haven't gotten rid of and have to go back for a procedure because I have abnormal cells. I have never had any problems like this and haven't been sexually active in over a year. I am very very worried especially after reading others problems

I never had normal periods my entire life. I didn't have my first one until I was 17 and then I only had one every 3 months or so. My first doctor put me on ortho lo and I was on that for 2 years. My periods were extremely heavy and would last up to 3 weeks sometimes but I had no other side effects. I stopped taking ortho and had one period 3 months later and then nothing. I was in college and working and basically put my health on hold. I got married and when we started talking about kids I wasn't even sure I could have any. I'm 25 and in the past 3 years I've had one period. I went to another doctor and she gave me a pill to start my period and then I was to start taking Femcon Fe.She said if I didn't have my periods now I would eventually lose the ability to carry a baby. So I've been on Femcon for the past three months now. I bled the entire first pack and 3 days into my second one. It varied daily as to how heavy the flow was. I called the doctor and she said to keep taking them and that if they were too heavy to take Advil and that would slow it down. My last period was good. Lasted 4 days and was normal. There are other side effects though. I'm more emotional now than I've ever been in my entire life. I'm usually a pretty happy, go with the flow kind of person but now I find myself wanting to snap at people, I get depressed and cry for no reason. I love to cook but now the smell of certain foods (especially meats cooking) makes me nauseous. I get sick just driving by fast food places. Needless to say I have a loss of appetite. I did notice that I had some acne but I started to use Pro Activ so thats not a issue now. I have another doctors appointment in a few weeks so I'll see how things are going there before I decide if I want to change pills or not.

WEIGHT GAIN!! Holy Cow!... I've weighed 115 lbs for the last 4 years of my life. I started on this new pill last week and in the past WEEK that I have i gained 6 lbs!!! It's not like I changed my lifestyle or decided to become a fast food junkie either. All factors are constant. I went to the gym today and I when I stepped on the scale I almost had a heart attack. I noticed I was bloated and everything was fitting tighter ( I just thought my fiance did laundry again and shrunk everything ). Has anyone else had weight gain from this pill? I have been on other pills, Yasmin, Alese, etc in the past and this never ever happened. Will this go away after the first month??

I started taking the generic of Toprol (metaprolol) 3 months ago. I'm on 150mg per day for a rapid heartbeat, I'm 39 years old. It has helped my heart problems but I don't know if the side effects are worth it. I experience major fatigue that may last a week at a time and subside for a few days, aches in my back and neck (which I've learned may also be attributed to the Lipitor that I am also on), and my worse symptom is constant diarrhea. Some days I will run to the BR 15 times in one day. It seems to subside by dinner time, but that is probably because I stay away from food all afternoon. I'm fortunate that I am a stay at home mom I can't imagine having to go to work in this condition!

I am just one more: moody, ansy, and of course weight gain. My OB told me that the wight gain was because it makes me hungrier and to watch what I eat. BS. I don't like fast food, I don't eat after 6 PM, I don't snack between meals. I am calling him tomorrow. Mirena is coming out.
The funny thing is I am having all this simtoms and never thought of been coming from my IUD. I have to say I have it for almost 3 years and only had two periods, I love that. But its no worthy, my hubby is happier than me that I came to my senses.
I really appreciate all you ladies and husbands comments. Thank you God for putting me in this site.

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!

I found this site the other day as I was looking around the internet to see if other people had been experiencing severe bloating and weight gain. OMG- I can not believe how many other side effects I have and did not realize they all began after the insertion of Mirena.
My story- I had Mirena inserted 2 months ago. I decided to go off birth control as I have been on it for so many years. I was not having a period on the birth control and thought my body needed a break from it. The DR recommended Mirena and was very excited for me to try it. I googled Mirena before I had it inserted and it seemed like it would be great.Let's start with the insertion....THE MOST PAINFUL THING EVER! The DR told me that my cervix was on the smaller side of small (I have no children) and he seemed stressed when he was putting it in because he had a very hard time placing it. They ended up giving me a local and that did help numb the area, however it did not help much. I left the office like feeling terrible. My cramps were so severe that I went home and immediately went to bed. The cramps lasted for days and I spotted quite heavily.
After the initial pain, I then noticed I was bloated. I don't mean a little bloated- I mean it looks like I ate about 12 pizzas and drank 5 cases of beer. It was insane. The bloating continued to stay with me and my tummy was very sensitive-- kind of like "don't touch me there" kind of feeling.
Then I began to notice I was gaining weight. I gave up fast food and was eating healthier than I had in ages. I started thinking-- well, maybe I am getting older and my metabolism is slowing down? I am almost 39 and just was not sure if that was it. Cut to my pants getting tighter and tighter and me asking myself-- "what the heck is going on here?"
I then recently had this flu that has been going around and after day 10 of it went to the DR. Well, we all know they want to weigh you for EVERYTHING....so they did and I couldnt believe how much I weighed! I have gained about 10 pounds since this was inserted!
Now, it may sound vain, but i thought i would go on line and see if anyone else had this bloating and weight gain. I thought this HAD to be what was happening as it was the only thing that had changed in the last 3 months.
What I found astonished me....not only are you all gaining weight, experiencing bloating...BUT all these other side effects that I have also and didn't realize they also came on after the insertion of Mirena!
I have: bloating, weight gain, migraines, severe night sweats, tender breasts, insomnia, increased anxiety and heart palps, mood swings, PMS like nobodies business, painful intercourse ( I thought this would go away and never did), loss of sex drive, acne on my chest, back, neck & ears; spotting that last for days and days. These are all things I NEVER had before Mirena. I am totally freaked out now and made an appt to have this little demon removed!
I am nervous to have it removed as it was SO TERRIBLY painful to put in. I would love feedback from anyone that has had it out-- good or bad.
I can not believe how many side effects I have from this thing. I have been on Birth Control for so many years and NOTHING has ever done all this to me.
And the icing on the cake...the DR had me pay upfront for the insertion- $700 or so before they billed insurance. My insurance did end up covering it but still after 3 mos I have yet to see the reimbursement check from the Dr's office. That was a first for me-- paying up front and then billing my insurance. They say they do it with all IUD's because not ever insurance carrier covers them...yeah right. Prob because so many people have them removed so quickly after that they want their money straight away!
We are newlyweds (less than 1 year) and although we are on the fence if we want children, I would like our marriage to be strong. Having this thing sure doesn't help-- I am a bitch, I don't want to be touched, I am so drenched in sweat when I wake up, I have acne, I am getting chubby, and to top it off I have no sex drive and I am moody. My poor husband-- he is probably thinking "what the heck did I sign up for??!!!"
Thank you to all that have posted. I can see that I am not alone!!
Mona

About eight to ten years ago i had a violent reaction to lactaid. I had taken it numerous time before with no problems and then I woke up one morning - had a bowl of cereal and a lactaid pill - within the hour I was experiencing severe stomach pain along with vomiting and diarrhea. I thought it might have been due to the fact that i had had very little to eat the day before and only a bowl of cereal that morning with the extra strength pill.

the following weekend i was brave enough to try it again with some ice cream at night (this time i had a full stomach from dinner). BIG mistake - this time it was worse - the stomach pain was out of this world (i have a high pain threshold but this had me in the fetal position) and i couldnt leave the toilet and trash can for a few hours. My girlfriend was scared and called one of those nurse hot lines. they told her to coat my stomach with some kaopectate - which seemed to help. I checked the bottle of lactaid - and the expiration date had passed - so i threw it away and swore off of lactaid pills. fortunately they came out with the lactaid milk!

Fast forward to now - never touched the stuff again. well the other day I was out of lactaid milk and my wife (yes the same girlfriend) had picked up some samples of lactaid pills at a trade show - so I guess with the passage of time - I forgot how painful and miserable the other experiences had been - so i took the pill. Nothing happened!

Last night i decide to take another one because i had a craving for ice cream (had been awhile!). I figured it was ok since i had no reaction a week ago. Well sure enough - within the hour I was on the floor in severe stomach pain - followed by vomiting and diarrhea. This time we had kaopectate in the house - so i started taking it - well i just threw it right back up.

This episode lasted about an hour and a half this time. There was a metallic taste in my mouth about the third time i vomited, and the fifth and final time, there was puddle of yellow liquid that came out at the end.

I started taking Lisinopril about 10 months ago and now I have had severe redness and heat in my face, neck, and chest. I have constant headaches and my eyes are bloodshot most the time now. I have quick sharp pains throughout my chest arms and legs/feet a lot. I get blurry vision and disorientation every time after taking this stuff.. My heart rate varies from high to low but it feels like my blood is extremely thick no matter if I eat or not, I also get extreme nausea after eating even a salad with no dressing. I hate this stuff so much and it scares me to no end. I have major anxiety disorders anyway but this crap makes it worse. I think I am dying everyday its so nerve wrecking and I am only 25yrs old!!!! I recently stopped taking this junk for about a week but still took my Xanax for my anxiety and my face and neck aren't hot at all most the time anymore only when I move around and work a lot but not bad at all. My heart rate is normal and my blood pressure is staying about the same but maybe bout 8 or 9 notches lower than when i was on this stuff. I think someone is really going to get hurt on this stuff and we are all going to see a commercial on TV saying to call a lawyer for cash rewards because of med induced illness or even deaths... I'm going to the doctor and telling them to give me the most expensive effective and less side effect BP med..

I am having cramping and nausea almost daily know for about a week and my lower back hurts as well. The nausea is what is really bothering me. I don't hear too many complaints about nausea. Is anyone else expierencing this?
Thanks.

Vitals--35 yrs old male, 210lbs, 5'6". Three years ago, I had an agruement with my wife over dinner and brought on stress resulting in soreness in my left arm. I went to the hospital and stayed there for five days. I had an enlarge heart and a BP of 215/110. I didn't have a heart attack but was told to change my lifestyle. I was initially placed on atenol(however you spell it) but my doctor told me lisinopril was better.

I have family history going against me, my father has HBP and has had two mild heart attacks, 47 & 57 currently he's 61 and was treated by angioplas for those heart attacks and his father had four heart attacks and died at 85. Diabetes in all over my family, only in seniors.

Here's my deal, I have anxiety issues, I'm just a high-strung person. Since the two years, being on this stuff. I've noticed weakness in my left elbow at times, tingling feeling, and sometimes in my legs. I've developed this year, pain around my gall bladder and stomach pains. I don't have gall stones was checked out. I have also after six months of being on this stuff developed gaut in my big left toe, where I couldn't walk for a week. I have mini-attacks of gaut from time to time. And to add to the misery, this week, I passed two kidney stones.

I do feel tired all the time and my sex drive has weaken a bit, and let me tell you, my wife is hot and I love her to death so that's not the problem. I do get depressed from time to time. I don't get the cough as everyone has stated, but two years ago I did get pnemonia over the summer.

It's been a rough go, but let me offer hope to all. I've been trying to lose weight but been holding it on for some reason. I would recommend the most sensible solution, and we know what it is.

1. Diet--No matter what--fast food is crap-repeat after me-fast food is crap. Soft drinks are bad, yes even diet soda. Drink water and water and more water. Water is not boring when you cut fresh lemon or lime slices and put them in your glass or pitcher. Fruits, Veggies, low-sodium foods(throw away the salt shaker). Eat plain oatmeal with fresh blueberries in the morning. Zero fat yogurt perhaps as a snack. No meat. As much as I love prime rib, I had to give it up. Maybe meat once a month, or a small portion the size of your fist.
2. exercise--this is a no brainer. Just walk on a treadmill, once a day for 10-15 minutes while watching TV. Increase the minutes as months go by, but check with your doctor.
3. mediation--Half a hour daily, clear your mind, pray to God, or think about Hawaii, whatever it takes to relax.

Take care all,

John

I have never posted anything to a website before. After the terrifying effects of Seroquel - I feel the need to inform others.
In December of 2004 I was under alot of stress from work. I went two weeks without sleep. I went to the doctor and he perscribed 300 milagrams of Seroquel. It did help me sleep. Only I could sleep 24 hours a day! It took away my personality. My personality turned aggressive. I couldn't stop eating and I gained 35 pounds in 10 months. I craved sweets and fast food like a madman. I started to hear voices - I never heard them before Seroquel. Then I started getting suicidal. I decided to wean myself off Seroquel in February of 2006. It was like death. The insomnia came back as a rebound effect. When I got completely off the Seroquel in May of 2006 I started breaking out in a weird itching all over my body periodically. For one week all my bowel stools were pitch black. Before Seroquel I used to be an avid exerciser. Now I can't exercise for more than 10 minutes with out being in bed with chronic body aches for a week. My immune system is very fragile too. I have not been able to lose the weight yet. And I get very tired mentally from little things.
I have since found out that melatonin works great for insomnia. You just have to take it for 2 weeks before it starts to work.

I totally agree with the last post re: reactions to food. However, we did food allergy testing with my 4-year-old son and it showed nothing. Regardless of what the testing showed, he has done remarkably well now that we have elimated cow's milk from his diet and switched to as much organic food as possible. It is important to note that there is a difference in a food intolerance (which does not show up on allergy testing) and a food allergy. The intolerance side of things has to do with a build up of a food that is an irritant. My son does fine with dairy as long as I limit it--I would never deprive him of ice cream at birthday parties or the occasional treat. It's just not an everyday thing at our house. The same is true with nonorganic foods--I don't take a special snack to school, ban fast food (though it is not a regular meal for us), or ban eating out altogether. I just do my best to ensure that most of what my kids eat is organic. I truly believe that all the steroids, preservatives, colors and other artificial ingredients that are in food today contribute to my son's asthma (and my other son's eczema). While organic food is more expensive, I have definitely saved money on medications!

I'm seventeen years old and I've only been taking Yasmin for one week, but I've already had a huge appetite change. I've been getting huge cravings for specific foods (today I wanted Nachos from Taco Bell), and if I even think of eating a different food I nearly throw up. I started crying today thinking that I wouldn't be able to get the Nachos. I have never been emotional on my period before, nor had cravings like this. Every time that I've craved the certain fast food, I've gone out to buy it, and I feel grossly full and bloated for one hour. After an hour, I have a burning, starving feeling and want a different food. I use to enjoy eating candy bars when I'm on my period, but I'm now disgusted by the thought of sugar. What's wrong?!

First I would like to say that I know Advair helped save my life. I started it 2 years ago after respiratory failure from the flu and asthma. I was also on a course of Prednisone then and gained 20 lbs. Since my experience I eat better than ever (no fast food) and exercise regularly. I hired a personal trainer, joined Curves and walk several miles a week. I cannot lose weight! I began to suspect perhaps it's from Advair even though my Dr says it's not. I have not had an asthma attack in 2 years so I am going to attempt stop it on my own and see if that helps. I am very frustrated! I am also on Singulair and Proventil and hope these will ward off any attacks.
