I had my first daughter in 2004 and my doctor put me on Yasmin for 3 1/2 years i took it and done really well. I had my second child in January of this year and then was put on ocella(a generic). About a month after I went back on it I noticed these horrible pains in my chest and back somewhat like indigestion but I could drink a sprite or two and belch it out. Then it got worse and worse to the point of vomiting for three or four hours straight after I ate and unbearable pain. I went to my doctor and from there ending up in surgery in June of this year to have my gallbladder removed. Of course at the time of surgery I didn't have any insurance so now I am over $10,000.00 in debt due to a bc pill!!!!!!!! Needless to say I quit taking any birth control whatsoever and am now using condoms. The purpose for me putting my side effect on here is to say to all the ladies on Yasmin or the generic just switch or stop just because you dont have any side effects now doesn't mean you wont end up in surgery in a few years because of this horrible drug.

I have had Mirena for about more than a year now. I can relate to many of these symptoms. I have 2 girls and with my first daughter I've never had any problems until i got the IUD inserted in me. Worst side effects are constant back pain everyday, weight loss, the WORST bladder problem which i've never had before (just found out yesterday I have a Cyst on my ovary) , the worst mood swings ever. I've been to the emergency room time for feeling so weak and being so pale because of stomach pains (not knowing if its from the IUD, but was really scary for me) NO Sex Drive at all since the IUD. I am 21 and married, I believe i should have enough to want to be with my husband. To please him.. Right?? And when i do it is so painful.
I went to the Dr. yesterday to remove it and the Dr. told me in these words" I am not going to remove it for you, I respect you and your decision but i would not remove it, You will HAVE to go to another Dr." and then he gave me my money back (i dont have insurance) But I thought that was really strange. It's my decision to want to remove it. Isn't that crazy. It's my choice. So since my Dr. doesn't want to remove it, i am now going to choose another Dr. to remove it from me. I just think their are so many problems with the Mirena IUD and knowing if you are having plenty of symptoms you should remove it, dont take any chance!! I know I'm not

I had the Mirena IUD inserted at my 6 week check up after having my second daughter (who I got pregnant with while on the patch by the way). The day i got it put in I had really bad cramps and thought there was no way I was going to be able to keep it in but the next day I woke up and didn't feel a thing. I haven't had any weird or severe side effects that I have noticed and my daughter is about to turn 3 in a couple weeks. My periods do seem to come more frequently, about every two and a half to three weeks, but they are very light and only last couple days. I've found that it is very difficult for me to lose weight on birth control in general but I haven't experienced any weight gain on Mirena (as opposed to the 50 pounds I gained in the 4 months I was on the depo shot after my first daughter!). All in all I would have to say that the Mirena has been the best birth control method that I have tried so far. I am considering having it removed next year but only because we're thinking about having one more baby.

I got mirena birth control in June of 08 after I had my first daughter and I bled and bled and bled for over a year. I have had headaches, weight gain, that I can't lose for some reason. I'm overly tired all the time. I hardly have any energy. I have major mood swings. I'm depressed sometimes for no specific reason. It's uncomfortable to have sex. Most of the time i don't even want to have sex because my sex drive is very very low. I have had excessive amounts of white sometimes with a yellowish tint vaginal discharge. Abdominal pain, I've had some hair loss. But mostly just a lot of discharge. I haven't had any itching or anything with the discharge to indicate an infection except for very little yellowish tint to the excessive amount of discharge. But I have never bled so much or had so much discharge until I got the mirena birth control. I went to see my gyn ant the bleeding and he tried to give me bc piles to regulate my bleeding but my bleeding was regular my period came and went when it was suppose to but in between that time of he month I was still bleeding. I have finally stopped bleeding and it is now aug. 09 but I still have all the side effects above. I don't Know ether I should get it removed or not. And I'm only 18. I shouldn't be having these kinds of problems.

I haven't really had any adverse side effects in particular from my mirena. The insertion of my Mirena was a nightmare though. I have had three children, all of them via c-section and my doctor neglected to inform me about the insertion process in general. That it would be much easier for her to insert it had I had my children vaginally.
I went to my doctor and they got ready to insert my mirena and realized that the tool that they used to open my cervix and insert it was too short since my cervix is apparently very far up. So they had to go fetch a longer set of scary looking tongs. They then proceeded with the insertion which hurt so badly that I started crying. My poor husband had to hold me down on the table it hurt so bad. Then, after all was said and done she decided to ask me if I had ever dilated and I told her only with my first daughter and only to 7 1/2 cm. She then decided to tell me that was why the insertion was so difficult. That was, by far, the worst pain I have ever been in I believe.
After the insertion I had some pretty bad cramps and bled for a day or two but I haven't experienced anything other than that. Well, I do occasionally have a kind of sharp pain in my abdomen. I suppose it might be my uterus but hopefully it's all okay because I SERIOUSLY DREAD getting this mirena out. They will have to put me to sleep or give me a bunch of pills in order to get it out. I don't want to go through that pain again

I'm 23 years old and had the Mirena put in 6 weeks after our first daughter was born. The first 2 weeks of having it were fine... other than a little struggle implanting it all was going well. Exactly at the 2 week mark I wound up in the ER with what I thought were a bladder infection, hemorrhoids, and swollen lymph nodes in my hip-flexors. Now none of this has been linked to the Mirena, so it could be a fluke, but none of the doctors could figure anything out! My urine sample was clean, my pap was normal, they couldn't find hemorrhoids, and it was a frustrating un-diagnosis. The doc sent me home with pain meds and a local numbing cream, but using the bathroom hurt so bad I had to bite down on a towel to pee! Taking a poop... HA... I've been putting it off for days because I feel like my rectum will tear open! Has anyone else had any of these things? Maybe I'm just ill with a strange disease, but this site has me curious if it isn't the Mirena!

I have the Mirena IUD now. I had in inserted in August of '06, 3 months after I had my first daughter. All along I really liked the IUD. I did have some problems at first however, while having intercourse I had some discomfort. But all in all really liked the fact that my periods were lighter. However, for the past year or so I have noticed a huuge change in my sex drive, and hardly ever want to have intecourse. I am tired a lot, and even though I eat well, and exercise I have lost hardly ANY baby weight. After reading these comments, I am seriously thinking of having my IUD removed.

So glad I found this site!! i just went to the Mirena website to check side effects. i had this inserted a few weeks after i had my first daughter in December of 07. The last two months or so of my pregnancy i noticed my sex drive was slowing down, but it mostly was just the thought of the discomfort(I put on 50 pounds lol) So for months now, I have had the same decreased sex drive-it brings me to tears! I was never like this in my life, and I finally thought that maybe something was up with this Mirena. Once I read the posts, ans saw some of others side effects, i think thats whats going on. I have had Horrible leg cramps in my lower legs, severe shooting pain when I stand up, and I could not figure that out either. I even just last week, went out and bought expensive new sneakers and have been trying to where them thinking maybe all my other shoes were messing something up. Now I doubt it! Luckily my periods have not been bad, except the fact that they are beyond irregular(just light) and my cramps are about the same, but I do get some sharp cramps like i never felt in my abdomen. AND!!! I have lost all but about ten ponds of baby weight, but I have been on Phentermetrizine (same as Phentermine diet pill) from the doc, and have only been able to lose about 3 pounds in a month, so I am thinking this thing is def. holding some weight on me. Hope I can get it out, I don't have any insurance anymore!!!

Hi - just to say firstly, I have my mirena in for almost a year and a half and am hoping to have it out next week, before I kill someone!! So I am in no way 'pro' mirena.
just wanted to comment on your hair loss posts- after my first daughter, this happened to me too, without mirena. I actually had bald patches and was super paranoid. My hairdresser told me that this is very common in the few months after giving birth - the hormones are trying to rebalace and this unfortunately is a side effect. My doctor confirmed that it was not alopaecia as I was self-diagnosing. I used to cry in the shower seeing all my hair in the drain - but now, 3 years, another daughter and mirena later, my hair is beautifully healthy again.
But on the other mirena symptoms I have. My poor husband has not had any affection in the bedroom for almost 2 months now, which is scary as we enjoyed a healthy 4-5 times a week sex life until a few months ago. My first year with Mirena was fantastic, I recommended it to friends, but the past 3-4 months have been hell. Who is this psychotic person that has taken over me???? My husband is almost afraid to talk to me some days, because I go from sweet and cheerful to a screaming, raving lunatic in seconds, without warning. The weight gain has been huge - about 45lbs in 16 months and then the days where I don't feel depressed, I look in the mirror and it makes me depressed with the huge gut I now have. I've always been a curvy lady, but I never had a big stomach and it seems that all of this 45lbs is just sitting around my tummy.
Now I have to decided to have it out, and I'm left with the dilemma of birth control. My 2 daughters are 18 months apart, the oldest just turned 3, so I don't want another baby just now. However I would like another one in the future. Pills don't work for me - I took them religiously and got pregnant with both my daughters whilst on the pill. Do I choose condoms? Would I actually stop a spontaneous moment of passion to go to the drawer to get one, lol? I'm kinda not really sure what to do. All I know is that I need to get this out next week, and pray that I find another form of birth control. But in saying that, another baby in the house couldn't be as bad as what this thing is doing to my mental health.
I'll post again after I have this out

I was on YAZ for 2 years after the birth of my first daughter. When we decided to get pregnant again, I got off it for a year and now I am back on. This time there are no bad side effects, but I have a lot of break through bleeding so my doc is switching me to YASMIN. If I haven't had problems with YAZ, shouldn't YASMIN be close to the same? This site has me scared with all the posts. Any advice??
