I am so glad to come across your complaint! I have had the mirena for 10 months now. I have a list of side effects not even listed on the pamphlet on or the website. My side effects consist of:
exhaustion
extremely moody
breakouts, on my face, neck, and back
heavier more frequent periods
lost my sex drive
weight gain ( I have always struggled to gain a pound now in the past 10 months I have gained 17 pounds)
depression
So now that I have read everyone's complaints I am definitely convinced it is the mirena causing all of my problems. I am sure Mirena can be a good thing for some people but, it just isn't working for me. I am now going to make an appt. to have mine removed.

I"m 28 years old and decided to get the Mirena after having my third baby. I've had it since Feb 08. Since then I've had break-outs all over my body including my neck (who breaks out on their neck! ) on my chest, back, and face, and apart from all that I have been having heavy periods. I thought the Mirena was supposed to give you lighter or no periods at all. My sex drive is fine but I did notice my hair doesn't grow as fast as it used to. I am seriously thinking about getting this removed I can't wear desend clothes because of my break-outs.

24 yrs old, 3 kids
MY SYMPTOMS: Stabbing pains in butt & sides, BAD cramps, WORSE crotch drop, spotting, light frequent periods, normal but slightly longer periods, constant dull headache that won't go away, mood swings (extremely irritable toward my kids), hot flashes (I don't really know what those are but I'm assuming that's what it is), tiredness, ACNE, little discharge, yellowish discharge w/ odor, when I hadn't spotted for a while we got brave & my husband noted a "sour" taste that was never there before, "sweet scent" & normal discharge absent, some lack of libido, pain w/ deep penetration & me on top positions (WHY?), lower back pain (recently worse), uneasy emotional feeling, pressure & bloating in abdomen, slight weight gain, pain & cramping after sex, feeling that something is "stuck" in my uterus (that might just be in my head. :) ), food cravings, increased appetite & thirst.
MY STORY or most of it:
I AM SO EXCITED to have found this website! Of course I feel so bad for all the women who have had such nightmares to live with, but I thank you for sharing! Now I know it's not "just me". I had mirena placed in Dec '07 (bout 2 mos after having my 3rd baby. Placement didn't really hurt, it felt like a pap smear. Well after having a baby naturally I thought how bad could it be? Right away I started having these sharp stabbing pains (u're supposed to have cramps for a few days) but I thought it was weird because the pains were like in my butt. It hurt more when I sat down. I continued to have pretty bad cramps, enough for me to take something which I never like to do. I was scared about the cramps not letting up so I called the nurse & she said that it was normal. ALSO I couldn't feel the strings, had my husband check (his fingers are longer & w/out long nails) & he couldn't feel them either.. When I went back to have the strings trimmed my ob said that they are just even w/ my uterus."they'll probably just have to go into your uterus a little bit when they remove it," she said. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I have been scared about that this whole time. So it's been about a yr & 1/2 now since insertion & my husband has never felt the strings. I breastfed my son for 11 mos & he SUDDENLY weaned himself. During those first 11 I never had a period or even spotting (after the initial bleeding was over). A few months before I stopped nursing I started getting acne pretty bad, enough to order PRO-Activ. But this acne is not how it was as a teen, It's not in the T-zone, but on the sides of my face (cheeks) and mostly on my forehead.I didn't understand why the proactiv wasn't working because it worked miracles for me as a teen, but now I know. So after CRYING because of my baby's rejecting my sore, engorged boobs for a few days I started bleeding. I couldn't understand WHY I was sooooo upset over my baby stopping nursing. I've heard that it is natural to feel like that because of the close bond that is there and I think that is true. But now I am thinking that the mirena made it much worse because when I stopped nursing my first baby when she was about the same age, I didn't even care. I wanted to stop. So it is hard to remember if I had a real period or not that first month (I soon started writing down my bleeding days so that I could keep track.) But I know that after that I would have a LIGHT period for about 7-8 days which is long for me, then in a few days I would spot for 2 - 3 days, then maybe a week later I would have another light period for about 6 days. It's hard to remember exactly, but I have it written down somewhere and it was about like that for 3 mos. Then in December I had 2 light, long periods with one normal (finally!) and spotting in between. I remember trying to shop the day before Christmas Eve with THE WORST cramps & "crotch drop" I have ever had, only to SPOT the next day. In January I had a normal period (a bit shorter but with spotting for 2 days after) then a week later spotting for 4 days, followed by a light period. I've had mild achy -like cramping pretty much constantly since I stopped nursing. I think I just kind of got used to it. I find this cramping weird because with my pre-mirena periods I didn't really have cramps, just "crotch drop" for the first 2 days. The thing that drew me to look up side effects w/ mirena was the weight gain. I am pretty pissed off because I was down to 125 lbs from nursing (pre-preg weight 130 lbs) and I haven't weighed myself (I don't have a scale for some reason) but I CAN TELL that I have put on a few lbs, maybe 5 - 10 in the past few mos. PLUS there is the bloating and this uncomfortable pressure in my abdomen. I seem to only be fatter in my belly, which has always been pretty flat about a yr after each baby's birth.I would like to gain some in my boobs. I'm barely an A cup - after breastfeeding and saggy! But that hasn't happened. So I was wondering how long does this spotting, cramping, weight gain go on? For the whole 5 yrs? I went to the official mirena site which gives a few study numbers (Whatever the heck those mean). The site is supposed to allow u to log in & chat w/ new mirena users like yourself but I tried that & it didn't work. So then I found a site with like 400 posts from women whose lives were so messed up from merena, but its newest post was from 3 mos ago and most were from 4 or more yrs ago. I wish I had found that site before I got mirena. I didn't really research before getting it. I just trusted my ob & saw the poster on the wall, and read the little misleading pamphlet. Then I googled "Mirena bad side effects" and found this site. After reading these posts I know I am going to have my mirena removed. I'd do it myself but can't find the strings. I wonder what exactly they will have to do to get it out? I said I would give it 6 mos (after stopping breastfeeding) for my body to adjust or whatever and the end of Feb will be 6 mos. I don't want to live w/ these symptoms for 3 more yrs and I am afraid that worse things will happen, Anyway what is the point of having birth control if u don't really need it because u're always bleeding? My symptoms are not severely bad but they are there and are not worth it. I want to feel like me again.

I've been using Lisinopril for about a year and have experienced almost all of the side effects that everyone else has described. I have frequent severe sweating, headaches, sinus pressure, sore throat, tickling throat, annoying cough, frequent periods of when my face and solar plexus area feel very hot and/or flushed though my face looks normal, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, depression, no energy or motivation......etc, etc, and I did not have any of these problems before. Not sure what else to take. I've read side effects for all bp medications and none of them seem like anything I want to experience. Is there anything that people have found to work that has very little or no side effects? This stuff works but I'm so tired of feeling run down. I tried natural remedies, diet change, exercise, etc, before going on the Lisinopril but those did nothing to lower my pressure.

I had mirena inserted 7 weeks after my daughter was born. The first 6 months were great. I have endometriosis, so I enjoyed the little to no period and no pain aspect of this contraception very much. But as of the last 6 months, I'm now having 2 periods a month, EXTREME abdominal pain, bloating so bad you can literally watch my low belly expand before your eyes, horrible headaches 3-5 days before each period, decreased sex drive, and I can't prove it, but I think it's making it hard for me to lose the rest of my baby weight. I work out 4-5 days a week, eat right and still...I'm about 14lbs heavier than I was pre-baby. My gyn acted surprised to hear any of this, saying it couldn't be the mirena. Am I just crazy?

I'm so happy I found this site. I've been thinking I'm crazy or just getting old for the last 3 years while on Yasmin. I started taking it at age 29 and almost immediately after started having mood swings, extreme irritability and depression. I had previously been on Ortho Tri Cyclen and the Ortho Cyclen before Yasmin and was on them for MANY years and never had one side effect. I only switched in the first place because I like to have very very few periods and I run all my active pills together to forgo periods very often and I was having breakthrough on the Cyclen. Hence, the Yasmin trial.
I'm actually a doctor (which is why I CANNOT have frequent periods with all the accompanying issues), but I didn't even realize the possible connection between IBS and Yasmin. This needs to be studied and taken seriously. I never once had IBS symptoms until a few months after starting Yasmin. Now, 3 years later I have almost constatnt trouble, to the point everytime I eat I run for the bathroom, yet my weight has never been higher. I asked a GYN friend at work if they could be related and she said definitely no, but reading all of these "real life" examples, coupled with my own experience has made me think otherwise. Often, the symptoms will occur shortly after taking the pill, even when I haven't yet eaten breakfast. It's crazy!!
I'm going to switch either back to Ortho Cyclen or to something new ASAP and will report back. I'm both excited at the thought that my "IBS" might really be Yasmin related but also scared that it might not go away and therefore might really be IBS. I'll report back... It honestly never entered my mind that all of it could be the Yasmin. I had just moved, started a new job in a town I hate and I thought it was all stress related.
I've also had an interesting side effect no one has mentioned yet- my hair texture has dramatically changed. It isn't falling out, but has gone from VERY curly with a nice soft spiral curl pattern to very dry, straight and hard to manage. Nothing else has changed and now I'm wondering if it's not the DRSP. If pergnant women can have hair changes, why not women on the pill?? It's all hormones.
As always with a drug, there are always possible side effects. No one drug is perfect, and humans are so complex in their make up and they way they process drugs. Therefore, please don't judge your family docs or GYNs too harshly as not even the best doctor in the world can predict every side effect.

I've been on the nuvaring since January 2007. The first few months were great! I felt awesome and better than ever. This was because it kept my periods on a normal schedule. I was having them 2 and sometimes 3 times a month for 7 or 8 days at a time. NR completely took care of that problem. My periods are great now and almost pain free. They are very light, and that week, I feel better than ever. However, that is about the only thing that is really great about this stuff. Here in the last few months I have become increasingly emotional. I cry over everything and anything...even if it's nothing. I lose my temper quite frequently (over stuff that used to never bother me). I am extremely tired and can't seem to catch up on sleep. Also, in the past few weeks, I've began experiencing odd pains in my right chest area and head. They are weird feeling and very hard to describe. I am still at a loss to what I am going to do. I suppose I am going to ask other's opinions. NR can be a great thing, but it also messes with your emotions way too much. The worst part is, the man that I love and am getting married to on September 15th, 2007 is having to deal with a totally different person than he started dating. It makes me sad, yet I know that I need to be on some form of birth control due to such long and frequent periods without it.

HI,
My doc prescribed Yasmin to me because I have heavy heavy periods that come every three weeks due to fibroids. As a result, I have anemia, am up 2-3 nights during period time because of heavy bleeding - then have up to a week recovery time where I'm exhausted because of all the bleeding I went through. I was on Alesse for 12 days last year because I was going crazy! I had extreme moodiness and anxiety. I have the pack of Yasmin in my cabinet and last month I found this site, read everything and decided against taking it. Here it is only 20 days later - got my period and don't know what to do. I'm happy to see that there are some who have had positive results, but since I had such a bad time on Alesse - I don't want to go through what all of you have endured - it's terrible - but I'm sick of the frequent periods and heavy bleeding. If you have any suggestions, please post or email me at Andelmar@aol.com. Thanks and I hope all of you with negative side effects are feeling better - it's certainly no way to live!

I have experienced prolonged bleeding years after insertion. My mirena was inserted in May 2007 with no negative side effects. I ceased to have a period for almost two years. Then in February of 2008, I started bleeding continuously. My "average" period now lasts for 20 days out of a month. I am searching to see if others have had this problem.
I have been very happy with my mirena until this started happening. No other symptoms, just bleeding all the time years after insertion.
