I am 19 years old and have had Mirena since May 2008. I really struggled with the cramps and continuous bleeding for the first two months. My menstrual periods became less and less until I hit my year mark of having it. NOW, if I'm around a girl friend for more than a few days, I automatically get my menstrual period the same day she will and it will last for 8 to 10 days. I thought I wasn't supposed to get my period after a year of having Mirena?!! I've really enjoyed not having to worry about taking a pill every day or putting a new patch on every week and hope it stays on.... BUT, a year and a half of constant acne, the freshman 15, the anxiety, the decreased sex drive, the abdominal cramps are really starting to take a toll on my mental health!
I recently have developed new symptoms of excessive sweating in my armpits, loss of interest in doing things I used to love, joint pain, thin peeling nails, dry skin, cold intolerance. I mentioned these things to my mother the other day on the phone and she reminded me that thyroid problems are very congenital in our family. I have a doctor appt in 2 days for a blood test. If all goes well, I may just have to say goodbye to Mirena. Its been 100% effective for me in the past year and a half, but I can't handle the excess fine-print bullshit that comes with it!!!

Just shouting out... I LOVE the NuvaRing. Two years going and couldn't be happier. A good girl friend of mine has been using the ring for six years now and is still perfectly pleased. Endometriosis symptoms are lessened, hormonal balance is fine, cramps are lessened, and my once 7 day period has now gone to 3 days. To each their own, there is no perfect drug - but for me, this is about as close as it's going to get to perfection.

I am on the nuvaring, but I am not having the same complications that everyone else seems to have. I have been on the nuvaring for about three and a half years. Everything seemed to be going great with this new birth control until about 4 months ago when i didn't start my period. So, my fiance and i decided to get a pregnancy test and sure enough it was positive. With me being in my third year of college and having to change our wedding date, our lives have taken a drastic turn. Now that i am 18 weeks pregnant i am trying to keep a close look out on any other nuvaring pregnancies. I had found 2 others around my area who were having the same problem as me, so i knew i was not alone. Then the most shocking news came to me when my brothers girl friend called me one morning telling me she hadn't started her period yet. She was on the nuvaring too, let me remind you. The odds of her and I both getting pregnant on a birth control that is 99.9% accurate is a 1 and a million chance. What are the odds of that? Sure enough she is pregnant too. So our question is, was there a bad lot of nuvarings sent out around the same areas or what? And its not like we misused them either. we have both been on it for a long time, so we know the do's and don'ts. So, id there anyone else out there with this problem?

I am 24 and was on "the shot" for 2 1/2 years, I always had problems with spotting and felt really depressed (would cry easily, very sensitive). I was pretty much bleeding daily but didn't do anything about it. I was really out of touch with reality - it was really alarming when my doctor said casually that I should do a bone density test because taking it for more than 2 years could decrease your bone mass. What caused my to get off of the shot was that my provider quit carrying it in their office and not realizing it when I set up an appt. I was to late to get it...etc. I felt especially depressed after that. Finally after a several months of not being on it, I started to feel back to normal. This was just my personal experience and I would not recommend using depo.

Having read all the other peoples comments, am feeling a little less like I am going mad! I am 33 and have no children and had the Mirena coil fitted 18 months ago to combat VERY heavy periods and a dangerously low iron level (i suffer from PCOS). All seemed to be going well for the first 6 months or so- still bleeding but less heavily and a little bit of weight gain, but nothing too scary. Then 9 months in I got what seemed to be a very bad case of herpes the doctor didn't do a blood test, but did give me medication and pain killers.....I have been with my partner for 4 years, we are both faithful and I have never even had a cold sore before!
In the past 9 months my period have been getting more frequent again (one every couple of weeks for about 5 days) but not as heavy as before AND I am getting a very swollen every month with dry itchy areas and sometimes a blister! Does anyone know if it can cause a dormant herpes infection to become active? I am also putting on weight more and the mood swings are getting more pronounced....lots of uncontrollable for no reason and my sex drive is either very high or not there.
I think I will get it removed, but I am scared of the effect this will have on my periods........can anyone help!
