One more thing...I think everyone taking BP Meds should google the FASEB Journal and read the article "From Viper's Venom to Drug Design: Treating Hypertension". Fascinating! Can't imagine going to the Doctor and saying" "Hey Doc, can you give me a shot of that Viper Venom" to lower my blood pressure"? Can you? Do you think your Neurological system has be compromised?
Without a doubt!

I was put on Yasmin in 2006 due to irregular periods. I thought during the time I was on it I felt fine, I thought. I am the type of person who doesn't like going to the doctor bc all they want is my money. At first everything was fine. Then one day I started getting really hot and was so weak I could barely hold my head up. My vision was blacked out but I could still hear everything. I figured I was just dehydrated so I drank a few glasses of water and everything returned to normal within 15 minutes. I went on with life as normal and just swept the episode under the rug. The same thing happened a few more times in the near future but I didn't have loss of vision again. Still went on with life. I used to be a server, therefore I was on my feet all the time and I was a workaholic. I started getting severe cramps on my lower left calf but again ignored the symptom bc I just thought it was a bad muscle cramp from always being my feet. Then one day at work a girl ran into me just right and knocked my hip out of place. I walked around like that for about 5 days or so but I was taking TONS of Ibuprofen to ease the severe pain which helped me forget the leg cramps.. Eventually I went to the chiropractor to get an adjustment and everything was great again. No pain. As the next month passes the cramp in my leg started gradually moving up the back of my calf, around to just above my knee and then up to my groin. Again I just ignored this mystery "cramp." I ignored it until September 19th when I was working and my episodes stared again while I was working. I started feeling weak again and just really dehydrated. I went to get a drink and passed out in the kitchen during lunch rush. I got some water and then went back to work. I made one last round at my tables and then collapsed in the back bc I had one of the worst pains in my groin I had ever experienced. This time I couldn't ignore it and had my bf take me to an immediate care hospital. The doctor took my blood and ran tests and everything came back normal. Then they asked if I could give a urine sample and I did. They said it would take about 45 minutes for the results to come back. So I took a walk outside and felt like I was waddling. My left leg started getting really tight and swollen. I walked back in and went to the bathroom again. My left leg was purple!!!! I told the dr about it and she looked at my leg for a second, and ordered me to lay down and not move an inch and walked out the door. She immediately ordered a CT scan. We got the results back and we discovered I have blood clots from my ankle up to the top of my knee. That's the only part of my leg that was scanned. I was transferred to intensive care and was there for 4 days. I was immediately taken off Yasmin and put on extremely high doses of coumadin and other blood thinners to absorb the clots back into my bloodstream. Other CT scans were performed and the clots actually go from ankle up to my lower abdomen. After I was released from the hospital, I was on bed rest for 3 months. Bc I cannot be on my feet I had to quit my job. Keep in mind I was only 19 years old, now only 22. I now have to be on coumadin for the rest of my life, I have to get my blood levels tested monthly, and I also had to have a filter put in my inferior vena cava (the main vessel in your body that goes to your heart.) To prevent clots from moving to my heart, lungs, and or brain. Since then I have to have a job that I Cannot sit down for too long but can't have a job that I am on my feet either, pretty limited, huh? And of course I must have insurance to pay for the nonstop medical bills. I have been pretty depressed about the whole thing so make sure if you take Yasmin you get off immediately!!! Now instead of birth control pills I have a 10 year IUD. Now after reading some of the other posts I am wondering if my depression, anxiety, anger and mood swings have something to do with the IUD....

Male 28. Was diagnosed a couple of months ago with Ulcerative Colitis and was prescribed Prednisone. A large dose to start with then tampered off for 4 weeks. The first week I felt great, better than great, fantastic. The only downside was difficulty sleeping. The following 3 weeks, without any exaggeration have been among the worst I have ever experienced. I think the lack of sleep finally caught up with me, so I was constantly tired and generically felt depressed, also knee ache, eye pain, inability to think clearly (quite a problem when you are an Engineer), lacked energy or strength – and the Acne. Never before have I had Acne like this, and I used to suffer quite bad during my teens. Its just so aggressive, every few hours there seems to be new ones appearing. It seems to occur when ever I step down the dose. I think having this bad skin has really added to my depression over the last few weeks, it has been especially difficult considering I have been in the process of starting a new job. To top all of that my UC seems to be worst than ever! I’m worried that when I go back to see the Doctor next week he is going to put me on some equally-annoying medication or maybe another course of Prednisone if I’m lucky.
Does anyone know of some natural alternatives that are good for UC, very reluctant to put anymore man-made chemicals into my body.

I have been on the web for over a week now trying to get some answers. Dec 2008 I gave birth to twins. We may want more children later, but wanted to wait. So in Feb 2009 I got the Mirena placed. I had a period Feb, Mar,Apr. But have not had one since. I have had breast tenderness, migraines, fluttering in lower stomach, pitching pains in my cervix. I had a c-section, so I am not exactly sure what it feels like to have your cervix completely dilated, but I went into labor 4 times before having my twins. So it's that similar pain. I honestly feel pregnant. Way tired, not wanting to eat. I have taken test after test, but all are negative. Was wondering if anyone else has gotten pregnant and had a negative result. I am going to the doctor Thursday, and there is a great possibility of removal.

I have been taking Loestrin 24 Fe for about 2 in a half months. I had started a period in the middle of my first set and they said that it would just take time..well i haven't had a period since. I have had UTI and pregnancy test and they were both negative. The doctors thought i was crazy and I felt helpless and thought it was because i hadn't taken them regularly enough. My symps were nausea/vomiting, yeast infection,sore/tender boobs, dry skin, cold sores, chapped lips, excess sweating (so much to where id wake up with wet hair), dizziness, rash, hair loss, depression, joint pain, horrible abdominal pain(like bad cramps),back pain, no appetite which i lost about 10 pounds in 2 weeks, headaches, and i hadn't had a period in two months. All these symptoms happened in about a two week span. I was freaking out about it because the doctors told me it was just stress but i was sure that something was wrong..i was talking to my mom because i was really scared and upset & she asked what birth control i was on and i told her. She looked at the package and saw it was Loestrin -->FE<--(iron)..no one in my family can take iron and it makes them very very sick. Im going to the doctor tom again to tell them that and im almost positive that this is the reason. I will let you know when i find out.

Sorry to post again, but NO ONE REPLIED TO MY POST!
I am 5 days post removal and need reassurance. Unlike everyone else, I have NOT felt better right away. I am just as tired (if not more), more irritable, and JUST GOT ACNE on my face and arms 2 days AFTER removal! I'm still dizzy and the brain fog is just as bad. Have not bled a drop at all.
I know everyone is different, but my removal experience has been completely different... don't feel better, no bleeding/clots, no immediate improvement. IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME??? Was it not the Mirena after all???

i first went on Yasmin after the birth of my first child, who is nearly 3. before then i was on nordette. for the first year on Yasmin everything (i thought) was hunky dory but since reading previous posts i have come to realize that i have suffered the majority of symptoms listed by other users. however these symptoms did not appear til about a year after starting the drug. mainly i suffered from blurry vision, headaches, chest pain (which i attributed to my gallbladder which i had out not long after my child's birth.residual/phantom pain i thought silly me!) but i find that it is now that i am having the worst problems. i came off Yasmin in November last year in order to try for another child. i expected it to take a little while for my body to get back to normal but not this! ever since i have come off it my hormones have been so out of wack its not funny! i have broken out in acne worse than i ever had when i was a teenager, not only on my face but on my back as well. i have to wash my hair every night because it gets so greasy and i have put on a tonne of weight (which i first attributed to lack of exercise and poor food choices, but not to this extent!) i have also had a miscarriage in late January (when i had no trouble conceiving and carrying my first child) and am now pregnant again but think i might be about to loose this one too. i believe it is because i have some kind of hormonal imbalance due to coming off Yasmin - that it has thrown everything really out of wack. i plan on going to the doctor to get whatever test i can to try and work out what is wrong. when i first come off it my doctor said that it does affect people this way but i didn't think it would be this bad and i never had anything like this after coming off the nordette and i was on it for 10/11 years! was wondering if anybody else has had any problems after coming off it and trying to conceive?was thinking of using it again after my next child but think now i will just go back on to nordette.

I am 19 years old and I've been on Yasmin for about 2 years now, and lately I've been starting to feel sick, shaky, headaches all the time, MOODY like you won't believe, horribly, horribly constipated, and now in the last few months, my skin has gotten SO bad. I haven't had zits for awhile but now there's nothing I can do to get rid of them. To top it all off (not 100% sure if its related) but my appetite is so volatile! It drives me crazy. I started thinking back to when I started Yasmin, what changes occurred. It was around the time I was dumped, so I picked up a lot of weight and just put it to the fact that I was miserable from the break up, but since then, no matter what I try, I cannot lose weight. I'm on Ectiva, which is a prescription pill that helps with weight loss, and I'm still having no luck, Now i'm wondering maybe i'm not crazy, I'm not the only one with these side effects. Not too long ago, i had my period for a MONTH, thats with being on the pill and taking it every day. Not to mention the nausea, the worst part, i feel terrible! Funny thing is its like my body is warning me or crying to me to stop - i feel sick just looking at the tablet.
I'm going to the doctor tomorrow to see if he can prescribe something else, I'm not happy with Yasmin at all! I'd rather fall pregnant than suffer these side effects!
I hope it works out for the better!
Good luck to you ladies as well

My doctor told me he thought I would be a good candidate for mirena because have had very heavy periods and extreme pain after my tubal ligation. He inserted it in feb 09. the last time my husband and i had sex, it left a scratch on the head of his penis. you can actually see where it cut through the skin. i am going to the doctor to have it taken out this afternoon, so we will see what follow up symptoms i have. I have been moody, tired, depressed, no energy, gaining weight for no reason.

I started to take Femcon about 3 weeks ago. I haven't stopped bleeding for 3 weeks, my heart feels like its about to explode, I'm nervous can't stop shaking, and my hair is falling out drastically. Instead of gaining weight, I'm losing weight cause I don't have an appetite. I sit in my house all day in darkness..no tv...trying to stay still cause the cramps are killing me. I have pushed away from family and friends. My mother told me that I have a bad attitude...which I didn't think I did but obvious I do. No sex drive and I can't sleep at night. I do not recommend this pill to anyone. I'm going to the doctor on Tuesday and I will get off of it. I don't have medical insurance but at this point I don't care...I just need peace.

I used Tri-Sprintec for three years for my skin. In those three years I didn't *notice* a change in my body or personality other than the fact that my boobs went up 2 sizes and I gained some weight. However, after I QUIT using this medication, I realized that my mind had not been my own for the three years I took it.
I quit in November 2008, and instantly lost 15 pounds and 2 boob sizes. I also came to the realization that in the three years I was on this medication, I was an emotional wall with no ambition and no sex drive (which sucks when you are (19-21 years old).
Now that I have been off it for almost 6 months, I haven't had a period in nearly 4 (going to the doctor next week) and I cannot focus at all. I literally cannot sit down and focus on a school assignment.
I used to write every day before I started Tri-Sprintec, and while I was on it I sort of lost that ability to express anything through words, so I started doing film in school to show what I couldn't tell. Now that I am no longer on the medicine I realize that it is the medicine that made me unable to write. It really screwed with my mind. I can write again! But I am so upset that I missed out on three years of it, because those were very crucial years.
I feel like I was on pause for three years. Does that make sense? Anyone have anything similar?

First of all, a big thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences. I am a biochemist, with a background in pharmaceutical research...I chose the Mirena IUD after careful consideration of it's active ingredient, Levonorgestrel. The side effect profile seemed pretty acceptable...until I started to experience nearly ALL of them...I am 33 years old and had the Mirena IUD placed in October of 2008 after the birth of my second child in June of 2008. The initial reaction was to be expected...cramping, a little spotting etc...nothing to be alarmed about. I still have yet to have a period (which I really don't miss so no problem there) I never gave a second thought to this until now...for the past month or so (coinciding with the weening process, since I have been nursing the entire time, I believe the side effects were not as noticeable) I have been experiencing the following (that may or may not be related to Mirena as my OBGYN has so adamantly pointed out, but after reviewing your posts I'm willing to bet they're connected) and are in order of occurrence: Major, but temporary, hair loss after 2 months or so; Major respiratory infection lingering over a month with difficulty breathing, tightness and pain in the chest at around 6 mos; And in the past month, several instances of motion-like sickness/ nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, major impatience/ mood swings, loss of appetite (pregnancy-like symptoms...yep, I was thinking man I'd be pretty pissed if I was that 0.01% pregnant statistic), and as of this past weekend, my first aurora migraine with tunnel vision and serious nausea and vomiting, to the point where I went to Urgent Care...who referred me to the ER...who wants to perform a battery of tests including a head CT. I have an appointment with a trusted GP tomorrow to discuss possible root causes...but it is to coincidental that so many women are experiencing these same symptoms! I am certainly leaning towards having this removed. CAN THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE HAD THIS REMOVED PLEASE RESPOND IF YOUR SYMPTOMS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED OR WERE RESOLVED!!! THANK YOU!
These side effects seem to go well beyond a 5% rate of incidence according to all of you who have reported. I will investigate further and keep everyone posted. As someone who is highly experienced in the pharmaceutical industry, you bet your a$$ I'm going to get to the bottom of this! Good luck ladies!

I used nuvaring about 2 years ago but stopped because i wasn't intimate with anyone and i wanted birth control to clear up my skin which the nuvaring did not do. Now I'm married and I was using yaz bc pills but I would forget to take them so when I went in for a pap smear I asked the doctor to put me back on the nuvaring. I noticed the brown discharge which i know is common but doesn't seem healthy to me. Lately i have also gotten sharp stomach pains and a foul smell and itching. the odor and itching made me think i had a yeast infection because i remember going to the doctor frequently 2 years ago and being treated for yeast infections but my symptoms didn't go away until i stopped using the nuvaring. i went to the doctor yesterday and he sent off tests for everything imaginable... including stds... he also told me he would bet the nuvaring is whats causing all these problems. i should get my test results by next week and will update here. the only thing i am worried about is taking out the nuvaring yesterday b.c. my husband and i had sex about three times last week and since im not on any type of birth control now, i don't know if i might get pregnant... does anyone know the chances of pregnancy in my situation?

- I had the Mirena put in last November and and have not stopped bleeding since. I called the doctor and she told me that I would experience this and would have to give it a little time. Last Tuesday I felt an awful cramping come over me while I was at work, almost like a miscarriage sensation. I took some ibuprofen and the pain subsided after a while, later that day I started bleeding very heavily went to the rest room and HUGE clots were coming down. I thought it was just a bad period. Last night I went to feel for the IUD and noticed it was missing. I will be going to the doctor tomorrow and will let you know what happened but I just can't help but think it disattached and well God only knows where it went.
Has anyone experienced this? I have noticed some mood swings, not the weight gain but definitely the cramping .

Oh my gosh!!! I can't even begin to tell you how grateful I am that my husband found this website. I had my Mirena placed a little less than 6 months ago at my six-week follow up visit after having my 8th and last child. My husband and I (and OB/GYN) decided this was the best option because I can't tolerate birth control pills (the estrogen gives me major migraines). Anyway, I was told that I would have some spotting but it would go away and after about a year I may not have a period at all. I had just finished the bleeding that comes after having a baby and I breastfeed so I don't normally have a period anyway until a couple months after I'm done breastfeeding...well let me tell you I bled off an on for the first 3 months with cramping. More on than off and it was just downright annoying cause I didn't know when to expect it so I always had to be prepared. But I stuck it out cause I knew that was a possible side effect. What I didn't know was all the other possible side effects. I think I've experienced just about all the ones listed in all the posts I've read. I thought I was going crazy!!! I have had severe mood swings and I guess depression. I've never been a depressed person so I wasn't even sure what the symptoms were, but now I do. I don't feel like doing much of anything. I don't want to go anywhere...I just want to be a hermit at home. I love my husband and all my children, especially my little 6 month old boy and his never ending smile (which is what keeps me going) but there have been days where the littlest thing sets me off and pushes me over the edge and then I just want to rip somebody's head off! Completely irrational thoughts too. None of this is me at all!!! It wasn't until about a week ago when my husband and I were talking about it and I was crying and telling him that I didn't know what was wrong with me and that I thought I was going crazy and that I just wanted to be myself again and be happy...that he pointed out that the only other time he has seen me moody at all is when I'm pregnant (and then not even close to this degree). It was then that the light bulb went off! If Mirena makes your body think you're pregnant by releasing hormones then it only stands to reason that you may have some of the same side effects as pregnancy. I already had an appt. with my OB/GYN to get the strings cut shorter (my husband could feel them during intercourse and it was painful) so we decided that I should address my concerns at my appt. Well I did and my dr. told me that the mood swings and depression could very well be a symptom of the Mirena and it's hormones. He said that there was no way of knowing just how much hormones is too much for me and everyone is affected differently but that if it were his wife with the same complaints he would tell her to yank it. He said if I wasn't convinced about Mirena being the culprit that maybe I could seek counseling to talk about my "craziness" (my word...not his) but asked me to make a follow-up appt. with him in a week anyway and in the meantime come home and discuss it with my husband. My husband actually found this site and immediately sent me the link after reading some of the stories posted here. I'm eternally grateful to him...Now I know I'm not going crazy and I also know that I'm not alone! Needless to say...I'm keeping my appointment for this Wednesday and can't wait to have the Mirena removed and I'm not seeking counseling, lol!
Symptoms I've experienced:
Major mood swings
depression
exhaustion
back ache
weight gain
chest pain
anxiety
jitters
loss of concentration/focus
NO libido
joint pain
bloating
throat obstruction feeling
There's probably even more that I've just not connected to this stupid Mirena. Oh well...I just can't wait to be normal again! Anyone considering this type of Birth Control should really think twice and know what you might possibly be in for. Could work great for you, but then again, maybe not!!

I was prescribed Yaz for my PMDD. I have been on it 10 days now and have bled for the full 10 days.
I have had no energy, feel paranoid, and have very strong urges to commit suicide.
I am shaking, sweating, can't sleep and terrible nightmares.
I am crying for no reason.
I am so glad I found this site. I really thought I was losing my mind.
I'm going to the doctor in a little bit for a full explanation as to why I was not informed of these side effects?
He made it out to be the cure to so many years of PMDD.
I was excited to have finally found Yaz now I wish I had never started it.

I have been on Toprol-XL (BRAND) for 3 months. I took the generic for 2 months with no change in BP so I requested the brand name. I found your website by surfing the web looking for answers to my complaints. I have weight gain, vivid violent dreams, extreme fatigue, my breathing is slow and I am just dragging around in a fog. I felt better when my BP was high and I didn't take all this medication. Currently, I am taking first, Lisinopril, then added Toprol XL AND then added Clonidine. My BP is still not properly controlled. I am going to the doctor today to have my medication changed. Thank you for sharing your comments.

I had the Mirena inserted July 2007. I thought the Mirena was the best invention ever! I have migraines so I could no longer continue taking the pill. My doctor and I discussed my options and we both thought the Mirena would be a good solution. I didn't want to have anymore kids but I was mentally ready to have my tubes tied. With the Mirena I would have lighter periods and no migraines and it lasted for 5 years. No remembering taking a pill every night. Sounded like a win-win situation to me. During the latter half of 2007 to early 2008, I gained 22 lbs. It appeared overnight (or that's how I felt). I blamed it on it being the holidays and eating too much. I increased my workouts, hired a personal trainer (not cheap) and dieted my butt off. I didn't lose a pound. Early this year my co-worker told me about this sight. She had the Mirena also. When I started reading the side affections that women were experiencing, everything started clicking into place. The weight gain. The hair loss. My hair grows like a weed. And I've been trying to grow my hair out for at least 8 months. It hasn't grown an inch even though I get my ends trimmed. The hair at the back of my head has broken off. It's shorter than the rest of my hair. I have ZERO sex drive. I'm moody (more than usual). I've made an appointment to have it removed Wednesday. I can't wait! I still don't know what I'm going to do about birth control.

Yasmin has been great in fixing up my acne problems. I have not gained any weight but my mood swings are atrocious! I feel like I am in a dark tunnel at least once a month (around the sugar pill time), I keep spotting brown mucus. This just started in the last fortnight. I will go a day or so with no problems then it starts again. I am going to the doctor on Monday to find out what is going on. I am getting married in one month's time and I dread to think of my honeymoon night! Spotting brown goo! But I don't want my skin to break out. I went on the Yasmin because of the fact it has a mild diuretic in it which helps me because I have fluid retention issues at times. Has anyone else experienced spotting on and off?? I also have a lot of leg cramps and back ache on a regular basis!! Thank you!

Hi everyone ~ I am so glad I have found all of you. I have an appt today to have the Mirena placed. I highly considering canceling the appt now. I have read probably 98% bad and only 2% good. can anyone help me decide what I should do? I was having it placed for my heavy, painful menses, the birth control is/was a bonus feature. really? I shouldn't do this eh? someone please respond.
