Hi, I was switced from Atenolol to Toprol-XL 50 mg about 1 year ago for palpatations and it seemed to work very little papations now. However, I am currently experiencing right upper quadrant pain and my triglycerides are over 500. I am told I it is drug induced fatty liver disease? I am slowly weaning myself off this medication because you can not just quit per/pharmacist. I also have gained weight which I can not lose, hair thinning, hard to concentrate, elevated triglycerides, calf pain after walking or excercising, fluid retention, feet swelling etc..... for those of you who are on it I would suggest having your triglycerides and liver enzymes checked.

YAZ: I've been on Yaz for about a year after taking Yasmine for a year or two, and I have been feeling very lethargic for the past few months. I'll sleep fine, but after waking up in the morning about three hours later, I'm wiped out again. I've also been having heartburn and dry eyes-don't know if those are related. Has anyone had new or worse side effects after being on Yaz for a year or more?

I've been on Advair for years. I'm a healthy 32 y.o female, active, with severe asthma. Trying to get myself off of it and have been successful at taking the medication once every 3 days or so. I am working out more and need it less often - the more I build up lung capacity. Within the last year, I've noticed that I've been losing eyebrow hair. So much of it, in fact, that I went to the Derm. for a diagnosis. They think it's "alopecia" - and I say ... it's ADVAIR. Anyone else experiencing hair loss or eyebrow loss, who happens to be on an inhaled steroid? In my case, it's only ONE eyebrow - very annoying! Hair on head is fine. Can't help but link it to the drugs, since Alopecia seems just way too far removed.

I've been on Alesse now for 4 months and just in the past month and a half I've noticed the terrible side effects it's been causing. I haven't had a normal nights sleep for over a month now, I wake up every couple hours and have vivid nightmares/dreams pretty much every night. I've had 2 yeast infections already, horrible mood swings where I feel intense rage towards anyone near me, definite hair thinning, and total lack of sex drive. I have no energry and I just don't even feel like me anymore. I mean I know any med is going to have side effects but this is just too much. I'm now going off the pill and I have an appt to see my doctor next week and hopefully switch to a different BCP with less severe side effects..

I'm so glad I googled side effects of Yasmin and found this site. All of the sudden my mood swings for the past almost YEAR make sense. I started out fine. The pill was great, and I haven't had to worry about acne at all. Of course I gained a few pounds, but not too much. However, I'm a pre medical student trying to study for the MCAT this summer. I've been SO tired and drained and majorly depressed that I just can't seem to concentrate. I feel like I'm always crying over the stupidest stuff (AKA: no reason at ALL), and my grades are starting to suffer. Hopefully now that I've read this, I can stop taking this pill and see an improvement. It's just not worth the depression. I'm 22 right now, and until recently had never had a suicidal thought. I was starting to panic, because I couldn't identify the cause of my depression. I'm a good student, have lots of friends, and have the most amazing boyfriend and family. Life is good, I shouldn't feel this bad. Now that I have a clue as to what this may be, I can fix it.

Had total thyroidectomy 9 months ago and started taking Synthroid immediately thereafter. For the last 4 months I have noticed significant hair thinning. I have always had very thick, healthly looking hair but now it's just dry and brittle all of the time. I always feel tired and bloated around my stomach area in particular. I have always been a size 4-6 but have inexplicably gained 6 pounds in the last month. Is there an alternative to snythroid without these side effects?

I am on 150 mg of Toprol XL daily for about 2 years. AFter I started on the Toprol within 3 months I noticed my hair was much thinner. I did not associate the two until the next time I saw my beautician, and the first thing she asked me about was if I was taking blood pressure meds. Her experience with many heads of hair had given her this knowledge. I have found others who say the same. My doctors say they have never seen hair thinning as a side effect. Does everyone have to go bald before this is acknowledged?

Super light sleeping but real concern is weakness in legs, feeling of imbalance. Also, hair thinning rapidly the past year. I have been on Lipitor about 5 years. 20 mg. a day.
Experienced rash through mid section for 4 months. It's somewhat better now.

I received 10 Kenalog injections on 9/15 in my scalp to help with hair loss. I am 34; the doctor biopsied and said I had scarring alopecia. I asked about cortisone shots and she elected to give me a series to see if it would help. The shots were painful, of course. But I'd read that steroid therapy can help regrow hair, so I remained hopeful. On my return visit a couple of months later, I pointed out the dent to her, and she said it would fill in in a few months. She gave me a 2nd shot of Kenalog in my left buttock.
I got home that night and looked up the drug and its side effects. I found this board. I cried all night.
It's 3 months later and I have one huge, tender indentation in my scalp--it is BALD; how ironic as there was hair there pre-Kenalog. I also have several less deep dents in my scalp. I've also had the yeast infection, but so far I have yet to develop an indentation or discoloration in my buttock. I am wondering if I should see a lawyer because I was not informed of the risks of this drug. And apparently rather than improving the situation it was prescribed for, it made it worse.
Sigh.

I'm so sorry you are so sad! I too am 32 and had to stop taking Yasmin b/c of possible clot. I was taken off mid-pack June 7th. I know everyone is different, but my skin/hair have gone from borderline dry to more the greasy side, and I actually even had face breakouts. I tease I'm a teenager again! I'm adjusting my skin/hair care products, but have had many women reassure me that skin more on the greasy side will stave of wrinkles as I age. :-) I wouldn't say I noticed my hair thinning on Yasmin but it definitely was more brittle and broke more. I was very emotional at first after Yasmin and still have my days, but after 2 months I feel like I'm starting to stabilize. And thanks for the eye twitch notice, yet another effect I didn't even know was likely a Yasmin thing. I bet you will notice as you feel better all the 'stuff' you didn't realize were due at least in part to Yasmin, too. Please hang in there, I am very hopeful as the days and weeks go by your WILL feel better!

hi, i seem to have a lot of the less common side effects: hair loss, itchy, acne, back ache, frequent urination, yeast infection (started with vaginal bacterial infection when i first started and now have yeast infection around arrival of cycle each month and now doing preventative measures, but not sure of effectiveness yet), irritability, restlessness, inability to focus, sore throat, change in taste, and hot flushes, though sometimes tingling and coldness in my feet.
my dosage is low, 25mg, for migrane prevention. was supposed to work up, but will not. spoken to dr. and am now taking 25mg every other night before bed. i was very drowsey at first and had seemingly adjusted, but will only take it before bed. it does help curb my migranes, and with the relpax to kick them when i do get them things are manageable.
what i would like to know is if i finally get to the lowest possible effective dosage, does anyone know if over time will the side effects become manageable or will i continue to have them or worse get more of them. to be honest hair loss, acne, and yeast infections are not a girls best friends, then add aggression and aggitation and i am not sure if i even want to be around me, yet i have less migranes. ANY replies will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sandy*

I have been on Yasmin for three months now. So far it has been working very well. I have been having hair thinning on the right side of my head. It starts a little to the right of the crown and goes to around the ear area. The area has definitely gotten thinner. I am wondering if there is a correlation between the pill and the hair thinning. I've heard that it could be a hormone imbalance and so I began taking a Women's One a Day pill and a Flintstones vitamin (for extra iron). If anyone knows anything about this or can recommend something I would appreciate any help at all.

Hi!
After reading all of these postings I was inspired to share my experience on Yasmin as well.
I started taking this pill about 8 months ago bascially to control some minor breakouts that I suddenly starting having out of the blue, I am 27 years old. For the first three months Yasmin gave me even worse acne but I decided to stick it out to see if it got any better. For a couple of months my acne did improve but now I have it worse than ever. Other symptoms that I have associated with the pill are: night sweats, facial flushing, anxiety and hair thinning/loss. I took my last pill a week ago. To be honest I am freaked out about coming off of it. I'm scared that coming off is going to be even worse than it was on the pill but I know now that I can't continue to put those hormones into my body.

This is an interesting and informative forum. I'm sorry to hear of all the anguish many people have expressed here while on Yasmin. Here's my story:
I have been on b/c pills for about 8 years - and I am just about to STOP them to get my body back to normal and give it break. But - that aside.....
My OBgyn prescribed me on Yasmin in mid-2003 - citing it as a new b/c pill and therefore she seemed to figure it would be the best thing for me. They didn't tell me it was $36 a month - niiiiice.
When I began Yasmin in summer of 2003 - I noticed a strange pattern in my scalp hair. The right-front quadrant of my hair thinned to where one could see the skin beneath if my hair was tightly tied back, and a small area of hair on my right temple began sticking out - like it would not grow past 2" long (my hair is longish - down to the middle of my back). This made me look a bit weird, to say the least - but I didn't attribute it to Yasmin- yet. Only when I began doing research on lists like this did I find out that hair thinning and shedding appears to be an all-too-common side effect of YASMIN. Lovely. Hindsight is 20/20 - but if I had known that before going on it - I wouldn't have bothered.
I cannot tell which complaints of mine are due to Yasmin and which are just woman-stuff - but I have several very dabillitating side effects which I am hoping are caused by YASMIN. Alll through the month - at all times of my cycle - I have a CONSTANT vaginal discharge ALL THE TIME. Every time I go to the bathroom I dread it because I know I'm going to have to spend half an hour (OK time overestimated but you get my drift) sitting there wiping and wiping and wiping and wiping - frequently having to flush more than once and/or get more bathroom tissue. WHAT A HASSLE!!!!! The discharge varies from green to yellow to brown to clear.
My face complexion is a DISASTER. My pores on my nose are enlarged so much that when I put foundation on I look like a golfball, and I have to use facewipes every 3 or 4 hours to scrape the grease off my forehead, nose and chin. I literally SHINE with the stuff. It's really horrid. When I go and look in the mirror, if I look close enough - I can see my pores dischrging immense amounts of sebum that sits in their small indentations like water. I have begun using toner in hopes that it would help. It doesn't appear to.
Also - YASMIN does NOT alter or alleviate my PMS. I still get cramps (although I never have had TERRIBLE ones) - but by far the worst is the mood swings and anger-management issues I have in the run-up week to my period. I snap at the slightest thing (husband puts a dish in the wrong place) and I am overly-emotional.
HOWEVER - by far the most DEGRADING, EXASPERATING, DEPRESSING AND WORRYING problem I have right now which seems to be attributable to being on the Yasmin birth control pill - is the COMPLETE lack of LIBIDO. Now, after doing research, I find out that Yasmin contains antiandrogen and antitestosterone agents in it. That means that it lowers or suppresses the male hormones inside of you like testosterone - which is what gives you sexual excitement and desire. YASMIN appears to be the single worst pill to take if you do not want libido problems.
The only time I have any sexual desire is DIRECTLY AFTER my period after I have been taking the inactive (or placebo) pills for 7 days. Does that ring alarm bells??
I'll stop now unless somebody writes back wanting to know any more specific advice on what I have been going through - but I can tell you that for $36 a month and considering we're usually too tired to "do it" at nights anyhow - I'd be as well stopping YASMIN and buying our family Life Insurance.

Has anyone experienced further side effects after going off of Yasmin? How long did they last? I'll be 35 in April. I started Yasmin in 1996. I started having a lot of breakthru bleeding so my doc switched me to Orth-Tricycline. I didn't do well on that, so went back to Yasmin. I eventually went to the patch, but that kept coming off, not to mention other emotional side effects with that also. After reading all of the other woman's side effects, a lot the pieces of the puzzle are now coming together. I have suffered for years with a majority of symptoms. I was even hospitalized for a week in a specialty hospital in Chicago in October with excruciating headaches. Looking back over all my symptoms, it all makes sense. I stopped taking Yasmin in January. At the time I weighed 162. Today, I weigh 132. It has to be the Yasmin because I have not tried to lose weight. Sure, I lost fullness in my breasts and my butt has become a lot smaller......in other words, my figure has suffered, but a lot of fluid retention is GONE. I have been sleeping A LOT better too. Here were my symptoms for years:
Panic attacks
Depression
Heart racing
Lumps in breast
Psychotic
Leg pains
Spotting every month
Multiple periods
Cramping
Fatigue
Moodiness
Mean
Acne
Hair thinning
Discharge
Since going off, I have experienced acne like never before. I'm assuming it's the poison coming out of my system???
Also, my hair seems to be thinning more. I assume it's for the same reason. Was this stuff that TOXIC??? I still have 3 packs left, but I don't think I'll ever go back on it! I sure would appreciate to hear from anyone who has experienced side effects AFTER going off Yasmin. I'm curious to know if it's just me, or if it IS the toxins trying to leave my system...
Blessings to all!

I am amazed! I have dry skin, hands and scalp, Skin bruises on arms and now starting on my chest in small spots, muscle and joint pain in feet. I wake up every morning stiff and bent over going to the bathroom, chronic sinus problems, going to see ENT (thought I had polyps) Dr. on the 30th of November, huge stomach, due to having twins 3 years ago, large pannus and excessive weight gain in stomach area which I think is due to advair, lost hair in crown area of scalp and my scalp STAYS flaky, hair thinning out, night sweats which I thought was premenopausal (I'm 40). Floaters in eyes which are more pronounced now than ever and sometimes flashes of white spots in peripheal vision. Toenails are dry, big toe is dry and dark and they look very unhealthy.

i have been on prednisone, and other types of steroids for 6 years now,, i have all the side effects, hair thinning, skin thinning, moon face, weight gain, stopped my menstrual, rashes, legg cramps, brusing, mood swings, and on and on, , i compare this drug to cocain,,,THE BIG LIE! It will make u feel good at 1st, then sap!...anyway,, i take them, because i have constant hives,,, steroids only covers the problem up for awhile, it doesn't cure,,, honestly,, of there is another way, take it,,, try to stay off the steroids,,this is what i was told,,,depending on how long u have been on steroids, it can take up to 2 years to get out of your system, and that long to get that weight off,,it is not water weight,,, IT IS FAT, because you put it on eating,,this drug will make ur skin thin,, will bring your young body down FAST!!!! i personally have come to the conclusion to keep the hives and swellings and stop the steroids,,,,oooooo VERY IMPORTANT,,,STEROIDS, WILL AME U HEAL VERY SLOW,, SO IF U HAVE TO HAVE SURGERY,,,DENTAL WORK,,MAKE SURE U SAY SOMETHING...
