Lithium Carbonate nearly killed me. My doctor knew I was bulimic and he prescribed it any way, in combination with Geodon and Lamictal, even though I've been medication intolerant of 34 psychiatric drugs since I was 15. I am now 23. One year ago my boyfriend said he didn't like how I was changing in personality, that I was "different". I couldn't conceive his perspective. After only 2 weeks exactly of taking the Lithium at 900mg a day, I landed in the ICU where I was fighting for my life for 5 days. I had what looked like seizures but they were not. I had a dystonic reaction to the drug. It all began with a hand tremor on my left side. Ever since then, I get "episodes" where my ENTIRE right side goes dead and my left side extremities jerk and twitch and it hurts like hell. My neck snaps to the left and my lungs freeze long enough to where my lips turn blue. I live back home now. I cannot live alone. These episodes come out of nowhere. I have not been the same since that April Fool's day (how ironic right?)...I am to go to Johns Hopkins to find out what happened. They believe it may be a drug induced movement disorder. I also lose speech during these episodes or at random on its own while in class or talking with a friend. It's scaring the living hell out of me. To think that my central nervous system very well may have been POISONED makes me sick to my stomach...this doctor was reckless and used me as a lab rat. And now I pay the price. He went to med school at age 17 and did 4 years brain research on monkeys post graduation....I trusted him...if HE could do this to me, imagine what a D.O. or typical M.D. with little training could do with this toxic stuff?! I almost died. And I fear that I eventually will...The symptoms of muscle spasms and cognitive impairment have only worsened. I get annoyed with outer stimuli very easily at times, followed by hours of confusion and I cannot understand what people are saying to me nor can I finish a thought or even identify an object (nominal aphasia). If you ask me, stay AWAY from this unnatural form of help, you're better off with homeopathic medicine and breathing techniques. I learned the hard way. I just hope this helps at least one of you from starting this horrible drug. It can have PERMANENT side effects on WHO you ARE, i.e. your personality. My perception of reality has forever changed and I cannot go back. Do your research. And REALLY think about the risks before you begin taking this drug....or any of them for that matter....
On youtube you should watch this eye opening documentary that my friend found for me about big pharma. It's...jaw dropping. search "big pharma big bucks" on youtube.com and you will see what I mean.
Hope this helps. I will post the outcome of a final diagnosis, because as of right now, I cannot go to the ER when these episodes occur because they AUTOMATICALLY assume it's "in my head" simply because of a history of depression and PTSD. So all they do is give me NO pain meds for the muscle pain or even any tests ordered to find an answer, and call for a psych consult...HELLO?! talk about breaking the Hippocratic oath "FIRST do no harm". I'm a responsible, smart, and determined young woman who's been in in-patient treatment before and is very aware on how to handle my day to day strives. But these doctors...sigh....they just don't listen...it's ALL about liability for them. And it angers me. So I wait at home crying because I can't talk to anyone, in agonizing pain, and await for the moment my lung muscles freeze and I cannot breathe...it frightens me to my very core. NO ONE should have to go through with this...NO ONE. So, do your homework. Please. For you and your loved one's sake.
-H.

I was on Lamictal for 4 years and after the first year I suddenly started having all kinds of teeth and gum problems for no discernible reason. But since Lamictal has the possible side effect of "sores or blisters on the inside of the mouth" I wondered if it could be related.

I did a Google search and am coming up with no experts yet, but lots and lots of posts connecting anticonvulsant meds, particularly Lamictal, Topamax, Neurontin, and Depakote, with dental problems. Dilantin is well known for causing gum disease and breaking down tooth enamel, loosening of teeth, and even breaking down of jawbone tissue.

I don't think the experts have connected the dots yet, but is anyone else having this problem?

lamictal controls seizures if you take it at the right time. i am on 200 at night and 200 in the morning plus epilim. sometimes i just sit and cry wen im trying to concentrate on reading books i have to study or trying to remember work i learnt at school which has left my brain. im failing school not matter how hard i try, i study all the time then the next day i have forgotten it. im so young and i havnt even started my future yet and i may have screwed it already. failing exams because i forgot wat i learnt the night before hurts so bad. its hard to say "hey everyone the reason i failed is because lamictal screws my memory" i know thats what it is. i was extremely intelligent before i started taking it, but now im a failure. i guess deep inside i know really im not a failure, but lamictal makes me one. : ( p.s add a constant hand tremor and sudden jerking movements every now and then.

This is a nightmare. I have been on Lamictal 200 mg, tab in morning, for approx. 5 months. About 3 1/2 months ago I started getting muscles aches and weakness, muscle overuse problems, fluid retention ( like 12 pounds), stayed in a trance with very little short term memory. Thought it was everything but this medicine....I am an avid athelite, yes, even at 51. So, I blamed myself for not slowing down. Quick exercising totally, for 2 months, iced 3 times a day on leg muscles. Finally after making it to the summer without a mental breakdown, I went to the emergency room and a new internist to get checked out. Blood work, thyroid, hormones,ok.... Really don't care what they think , I can not walk, it hurts like hell. The Dr. did tell me to get off Lamictal....ok 7th day and I have some relief but it is not complete. Called manufactures, interesting, yes- these are side effects!!! But the studies are limited. Listen , unless you have seizures, get off this medicine... you read the full disclosure of side effects and then search yourself......It can ba a huge FOOOOOPA.....And you are the fool that will end up holdling the bag, not the manufacturer. Hopefully I will get better. Right now , I just trying to stay calm.

I started taking prednisone in September at 90 mgs a day and I gained 30 lbs in three weeks and was hospitalized for five days. The weight, which was all fluid, came off leaving nice stretch marks on my stomach and my dose was reduced to 50 mg a day. I'm now taking 30 mg a day and will be down to 20mg/day in 9 days. As you can tell, i'm counting the days until I no longer have to take this stuff. My side effects include hair loss (legs), hair gain (face), swollen face, legs & feet, headaches, muscle pain/weakness, increased appetite, hand tremor, rapid heatbeat/pulse, and acne. I think that's everything. That's enough. I use to suffer from insominia but my doctor told me to take my prednisone in the morning rather than the evening and it seems to be helping.

please refer to the postings on another message board "DIT message board ". once you are on their web site scroll down to "Lipitor '. once you access this board, use the "search ' feature at top of page and type "ear" into search box--indicate you wish to find it within the body of the message, and select
'lipitor" of the boards available. I have read several postings in which the individual has suffered ear pain! also, please, please email dr. beatrice golomb at : statinstudy@ucsd.edu and ask to report your suspected side effects for the one and ONLY study about statins that has NOT BEEN FUNDED by the PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURED THE STATIN BEING STUDIED. Did you know that the studies that are carried out at academic centers are funded by pharmaceutical companies--and that the pharm scientists DESIGN THE STUDIES, DETERMINE THE PROTOCOLS, AND DETERMINE WHAT GETS REPORTED FROM THE STUDY? THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED LEGALLY OR ANY OTHER WAY TO REPORT ANY NEGATIVE FINDINGS- and they do not! only with the unbiased compilation of information about side effects will one be able to even begin to convince one's physician that the muscle pain, leg weakness, ear pain, headaches, hand tremor, etc.are due to the statin one is taking!

my 60 yr. old husband experienced hand tremor and tingling, muscle twitching and jerking of legs esp. at night and immediately upon awakening, slowed reaction times, walk without swinging of arm on right side. He was diagnosed with parkinson's disease last week. my niece's husband (57 yr. old) was diagnosed with parkinson's 3 weeks ago! when it was discovered they had the same symptoms and had one major factor in common: BOTH HAD TAKEN LIPITOR FOR 4+ YEARS, i made my husband stop the drug and began researching. since statins result in incredible decrease in the body's ability to manufacture coenzyme Q10 he began on 100 mgm/day of the drug. on his own. when he was diagnosed by the neurologist with parkinson's the physician recommended my husband take coq10 at a dosage of 1200mgm/day! ( He also is taking vit c, selenium, & folic acid)It is still way too early to determine if any benefits will result, but the night and early morning twitching and jerking of his lower extremities has stopped for the past 2 days and the hand tremors have definitely decreased.
