OMG! I'm afraid to take this medication, after reading all of your posts!
I got an infection in my left knee from falling onto the concrete side walk. and the on-call doc. prescribed it 4x a day 500mg. I think I'll wait to see my own dr. this Friday. I am allergic to pen.G and sulfa. I don't think the on-call doc knows this. better to be safe then sorry.
thanks for all your informative posts! I love this forum!

Ugh, this has to be the worst medicine I have EVER been on. I was having anxiety attacks that occurred every evening and lasted for hours. Hot flash, nauseousness, inability to concentrate, thought I was going crazy.........
they started after my mom went in for open heart surgery in Nov of 2008. They put me on Xanax for attacks, and Clonazepam (double ugh), and I didn't take Effexor for a while, but my aunt convinced me to do it as I wasn't doing much better.

The thing is I'd been having issues with fatigue, heart palpitations, facial hair, etc. for several months to years and the doctors ran blood work and said everything was fine........

With the clonazepam and effexor I didn't have mood swings so much, but it was because I spent 16-20 hours a day in bed. When I first started the effexor I was told that the side effects go away after your body adjusts, and as it was the fourth or fifth anti-depressant I tried I figured I would suffer through. I lost 40 pounds (as I was/am overweight it was a good side effect in some ways) in a matter of 6 weeks, lost my appetite to the point that when I realized that I needed to do something about it I had to force myself to eat 1/2 piece of toast a day, slowing eating more...........I went several weeks only able to eat an average of 500 calories a day. I was so nauseous all the time. I was pretty much having a break down. I would only be "functioning" for 2-6 hours a day.

After going to the ER because my muscles began shaking while standing or trying to climb stairs (I'm only 28), having racing heart beats which they just prescribed more medication for, absolutely no energy, my hair falling out by the handfuls, I would wake up with it on my pillow............could not concentrate for the life of me, falling behind in school work (back to school mom), unable to do papers because I couldn't think.............

They finally tested my thyroid (runs in the family, have been telling them it sounded like my thyroid from the beginning........) my levels were finally off the charts, my TSH wasn't even registering. I was diagnosed with Graves disease........which can cause the panic attacks that they put me on the medication for in the first place.

As I figured it was probably the Graves, I tried weaning off my meds, only to feel as though I was going nuts and going to die............... I cut my clonazepam and effexor dosages in half, and within 2 days I could concentrate, and within a couple weeks I could go up and down the stairs again.............

Even now it is hard to say how much of my issues were caused by the Graves and how much was due to the Effexor combined with the Clonazepam. I was able to wean of the Clonazepam within 6 weeks by cutting my dosage in quarters every two weeks, but NOT the Effexor. I tried cut it and started having panic attacks, couldn't think, major migraines, and bed ridden........so I had to reduce it even slower.

Once I got down to half a dose, all of my symptoms went away except the fatigue. That is why I associate a lot of it with Effexor and NOT the Graves, because the symptoms did not go away until I reduced the drugs. I am now finally free of Effexor for about a month, and it was a hard road. It took me six months. I still have some issues with concentration and the occasional panic attack, but they are very minimal. I have read that this could be due to either both or one of the drugs I was on as it can take a year or more for your body to adjust.

Anyhoo, I wonder if the medication didn't trigger the Graves, or what.............but I would NEVER EVER suggest this medication to anyone.

I have gained most of the weight I lost back........but that is to be expected since my metabolism probably hit rock bottom not eating anything but toast for weeks.......

Anyhoo, I really wish that Doctors would tell you what could happen before giving you a drug. At least then when you start having these symptoms you know where and why...........rather then going in, and them having no idea?!?!?!? Funny, as if you search online you see lists that match exactly what you are going through.

I am now VERY leery about taking any meds at all, including Tylenol.

At a dermatologist, I was treated for seborrheic dermatitis with shots of Kenalog. I received 4 shots, the last two were 40 mg each - 2 weeks apart. I started experiencing skipped heart beats that have become very annoying. Sometimes my heart skips 7 beats per minute. I have no other side effects at the moment. Before receiving the first shot I asked about any side effects. The nurse told me I could have trouble sleeping the first night and may feel excited. NOTHING about heart arrhythmias. I went to my family doctor who took an EKG that showed PVC and I wore a holter monitor for 24 hours. I also called the dermatologist and explained the situation. The nurse confirmed that yes arrhythmias are a side effect of this shot.

Back in July I was experiencing rapid heart beats and shortness of breath. I'm a 43 white female with a high stress job. I went to the doctor expecting him to prescribe a sedative. He hooked me up to an EKG which showed I had a left bundle branch block. He then ordered blood work, chest x-rays, an ultra sound, and a nuclear stress test. All test came back fine, but my stress test showed a heart attack, which apparently is common with the left bundle block. I then wore a 24 hour Holter moniter which indicated tachycardia. That's when the doctor prescribed 50 mg Metoprolol. My BP and heart rate are now almost normal and the shortness of breath has gone away. I still experience a mild heaviness in my chest, but that is only when I allow my self to be stressed. I have gained over 5 pounds in less than 2 months and my dreams are more vivid than usual. One side effect that was listed on my drug info sheet that I haven't read about on this site described a cough, which I have had for over a month. I mentioned the cough to my doctor and he said it was prob post nasal drip so he prescribed 180 mg Fexofenadine and told me to cut the Metoprolol in half so I would be taking 25 mg. The Fexofenadine has helped with sneezing that I have always experienced, but the cough is still there. The cough is not always severe, but it has interrupted my sleep twice and my job once. The last bad coughing episode lasted 90 mins during the night. Has anyone else experienced the coughing side effect of Metoprolol?

I'm taking 125 mgs. Metoprolol per day. I've been on that dosage for approximately one year for skipped heart beats (which were very scary). Now I'm hot. Constantly sweating. It's unbearable. I can't stand the heat! The only time I don't sweat is when I'm not moving. I didn't associate it with the Toprol until now. The doctor has been running tests for thyroid, infections, etc. But it doesn't feel like an infection. I'm just HOT. And after reading some of your side-effects, now I'm starting to put it all together. I've been going through some weird sleep problems that I've never in my life experienced. Never had a night I didn't sleep right through the night...until now. So to sum things up: sweating bad, sleep disturbances and slight depression.

I'm the mom of two boys and have a history of bc pill use. It wasn't until my second son was born that I made the choice to have Mirena put in. I was looking for a less restrictive product and my Dr. suggeste the big M.

Well it's been 31/2 years and I;m fed up. I didn't think that this could be causing my weight gain. I didn't think this could be the cause of the acne (by the way I've never experience acne until now, in my late 30s). I didn't think this could be the cause of my heart palpitations or irregular random heart beats or the numbness and tingling in my left arm and hands, or the insatiable appetite, sharp, jaw dropping pain over both ovaries, cramping, terrible breast pain (my husband could not touch them the week before my cycle), bloating, enlarged breast, hair growth in places I wasn't especting there to be hair, and so on. I can't even begin to tell you when my cylce is going to start or end, everything has been so irregular, the spotting is awful and unexpected also to the point that now I'm chained to panty liners (huge drag). Well guess what - Mirena is the culprit.

I don't know what to do now. I'm not that good with the pill because I keep forgetting it somewhere down the line. I've tried the injections and they were just a nightmare. I stayed sick all the time but I lost weight :-). The patch was a joke. My 6 year old is the product of the patch and my 12 year old is the product of the pill and getting my tubes tied is out of the question.

First things first, the IUD must go. I've had my burial ceremony and the last rights have been read. Now on to better things. Hopefully there is something out there for someone like me who just wants reliable birth control without all the junk attached.

Good luck ladies. Let me be the first to congratulate you on your fight - ytou tried. Good luck moving ahead and I wish you all the best.

Hi Gang,
Im on 20 mg of Lisinopril in the morning and 25 mg of atenolol at night. The Lisinoril is for my blood pressure and the Atenolol is for my anxiety attacks that i have. O.o But im still have anxiety attacks, and i don't know why. So ive had all the test, heart ultra sound, ekg's, blood work, treadmill ekg, halter monitor for 3 days. The works basicly. Im 40 and yes over weight. But i passed all the test with flying colors. Doc said he only ever wants to see me again, if im Really sick. Anyone know why im getting anxiety attacks (mine are rapid heart beats, and feeling like fainting) all of a sudden. When i started the lisinopril i had a minor cough, but not any more. Otherwise ive been pretty good with both meds. Just don't know what is triggering the anxiety!

The Dr. gave me Effexor xr 75mg for my depression and 0.5 mg every 6 hrs of Xanax. Since then he lowered my Effexor xr to 35mg. During that period I gained 20 lbs and now I have excessive sweating constantly at least 5 times a day just as if I was coming out a flu like symptom.

My depression is still there buy not as bad but I started to get worried about what was causing the excessive sweating until I saw this site. I will set and appointment with the doctor tomorrow and see what the next plan of attack will be.

I know I was really bad with panic attacks and depression but know I could like to not take any more medications at all. With the help of God and I will recover from my depression and panic attacks. I had depression, panic attacks rasing heart beats, could not focus, memory loss, constant crying, fear. I when to the ER twice tacking I had a heart attack. All heart exams normal.

Now I have to deal with getting off the pills and live a normal life. How can I do this?

I have had AF for about three years. A year ago, I was in A Fib for about 3 months and decided to try flecainide. In four days my heart went into rhythm and stayed there for 8 months. A few days ago I awoke to a racing but regular heart beat of about 100-105 BPM. This has continued for 3 days and my doctor has recommended that I continue at an increased dosage. I seriously wonder if this is a side effect of this medicine.

okay i am not usually one to post on the internet but I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY TO FIND A WEBSITE BEFORE IN MY LIFE!!!!! :-) I seriously think Yasmin is the worst thing that ever happened to me...but I just put it all together right now! Thank you everyone for posting! Let me start out by saying i am NORMAL haha! I am a full time college student, athlete, employee, active family member, and I have always been the happiest, most light hearted person of all time! I have always loved every moment of my life...and was always easily able to cope with and learn from the tough times....UNTIL THE PAST SIXTH MONTHS!!!! i have been on yasmin for about a year and a half and starting about six months ago i have: A) dropped 17 pounds (despite eating everything in sight) and my parents/friends/boyfriend are freaking out with worry and i want to cry because i eat SO much! B) have these weird panic attacks like all my clothes (sweatpants, tshirts too!) feel tight and like they are choking me. I also think I have cancer like a thousand times a day (even though I am perfectly healthy...believe me i have been to every doctor (including my psychologist) in the last six months to check these new symptoms out). I am paranoid about stupid things, like if I will get in a car accident even if I am just driving a few blocks C) my heart beats very quickly, double beats, etc even when i am just resting....not working out, walking up the stairs, rushing around etc D) I can barely sleep at all, and even if i sleep for 12 hours i wake up exhausted E) I snap at all my friends F) Although I have been an athlete my entire life, my workouts and performance have been decreasing consistently. G) My glands are swollen often (yes I got an HIV test....and it was negative) and finally I) I freak out and cry about everything my boyfriend does...and he is the greatest guy in the world! So nice! Our relationship has always been great and he is super supportive! But in these last few months I cry and scream and get frustrated/angry/annoyed with him (and everyone) at the drop of a hat.BUT somehow I feel no emotion 99% of the day then when I am with him I become so awful! How is that possible? I HAVE BEEN SO SAD! and he keeps asking me what is wrong and doubting HIMSELF....omg i cant believe this Yasmin sight...i just showed it to him and it is like a huge weight has been lifted off both our shoulders! I am not a doctor and this IS just a blog I suppose....however I plan on talking to my GYN about this as soon as possible! These symptoms seem to match up with the other posts way too much to be just a coincidence......THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

4/10/07 from Lynn H.
My husband is 49 and has peripheral vascular disease which causes him to have ongoing problems with leg/ankle edema and cellulitis. He is standing and moving all day for his job and this increases his inflammation and edema. The doctor put him on Levaquin 750 mg./day for the cellulitis.
SIDE EFFECT: Hard pounding heartbeats, skipped beats, fast heart beats. He has gone off the medication for a few days, then just took one a few hours ago. The hard heartbeats started up again, as heard through my stethoscope. Heart rate in the 60s, but many skips and hard pounds. He will not continue this horrible medication and contact the doctor. This is a "dangerous" medication.

Since my doctor has upped my lisinopril to 40mg, I have been having rapid heart beats at night and dizziness. I am also on Atenolol. So these medicines interact with each other? I went of norvasc a month ago because I was so dizzy when I laid to sleep and when I sat. I have had so many tests to figure out why my heart races at times. Let me know if these medicines interact with each other or are these symptoms. thanks

If anybody KNEW how relieved I am to read these messages.... you guys just don't know! I stopped taking yasmin 2 weeks ago because I gained 30 pounds on it in one year. I have stretch marks, total loss of confidence, everything. THEN, when I read your messages I was so relieved to find out that a lot of women got anxiety from them too. For the past year I have been nothing but anxiety. My heart beats fast, I felt short of breath almost everyday, I couldn't drink a cup of coffee without getting palpitations and jitters for an hour, I felt fatigue everyday, I couldn't even have a normal workout routine because I would get tired after 10 minutes. And the WHOLE time I thought it was something else. I had no idea that it could have possible been yasmin because everybody told me it was too low of a dose to do anything. I'm so glad I'm off of it but I'm getting hotflashes and I'm only 19. I hopoe it will be over in a few weeks so I can be normal again. By the way, did anybody else get hotflashes while getting off of Yasmin??

I'm glad I wandered across this page. I have been on Yasmin for almost two weeks and I finally decided that I couldn't take it any more. I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and the pill exacerbated the effects. I was barely able to get out of bed and missed several days of class. Yesterday, I experienced some slight vertigo and when I lay down on the bed I experienced a spinning sensation. At times my heart beats fast and at others I get chest pains and it feels like my lungs are burning. My complexion has gone to hell. I have a lot more acne than usual. Also, hot and cold flashes. Yesterday I felt feverish and thought maybe I was getting sick. Sometimes the nausea gets to the point where I think I might vomit.
These symptoms are in no way bad compared the Ortho Evra patch that I tried a couple years ago. It made me paranoid and lethargic. I threw up a lot. I locked myself in my room and had horribly violent dreams. I also developed a severe rage problem that came out of absolutely nowhere! There were times when I thought that I was loosing my mind. I think maybe I was a bit. The paranoia was awful and it fundamentally changed me as a person. I think birth control is sceary. I think I'm going to stick to condoms and spermacide from now on.

To All-After months of looking at this site and what has seemed to be a mix of just sorting through personal dialogues of individual conversations , it is almost the first time I have found some very helpful actual fact based research and information. So whomever is making all these posts, I truly appreciate it. Please continue.

I've been having what seem to be growing chest pains, most pronounced just before my period to the point it is almost unbearable. Have other women experienced this? It started two years into taking Yasmin but I've now been off for several months and it seems to be getting worse? Does anyone know what this is or could be attributed to? I've already been to the doctor who after an EKG said that it was normal but that I had developed a heart murmur? I've also noticed palpitations and irregularity of how my heart beats during these times. I would greatly appreciate some help/information.....Its becoming quite worrisome.

Thank you

I have been on Toprol XL (25 mg/daily) for 6 months (F/41). I was really glad to come across this message board in a frantic search of "weight gain with Toprol XL". Have gained 10 pounds in these 6 months and for the life of me I cannot get any weight off, my body is just stuck where it is at. My problem is I have to lose weight since I am overweight about 40 pounds right now so this is so frustrating to me. At least I am not alone, thanks for posting your problems also with weight gain. I take Toprol for my fast beating heart, was having bad palps last January. Toprol does work well in keeping my B/P down (tends to be just a bit high) and the palps are non existent for me on this drug. I do have swollen ankles (at night) ok in the mornings. But the weight gain is really making me go crazy especially when I need to lose weight. This just isn't going to work so this morning I am cutting that pill in half and getting the heck off of it. I do find that if I stay away from sugar/caffeine my palps really don't bother me nearly as much. I went on it because the job I had was very stressful and brought back my palps again after not having them (as bad) for several years. I just hate those "fluttering" heart beats, they are hard to deal with and Toprol takes them away and keeps me "calmer" so I will miss Toprol for those effects, but not the weight gain! Thank you for this message board, it's been so helpful.

I do not know if my side effects are from lisinopril or toprol Xl or just dying. I have defibrillator. had one for 7 years-no problems. Put in new one in March 2006. Did good first month except when laid on left side felt extra heart beat. TOld person who checks defibrillator. She reprogrammmed it and then I started feeling the fast beats when I laid any way. Had fast heart beats all the time in 2nd month ever since and shocked 8 times. Went in hospital. FOund out I have heart muscle damage and put on lisinopril and toprol. I still have the fast heart beats all the time. They are driving me crazy. COuld my leads be bad or what is wrong with this defib? Did the 8 shockings damage my heart muscele? For 7 years they told me my heart was fine except the rhythm-but had nothing wrong with rest of my heart. Help!

Has anyone on Lisinopril experienced changes in lab test values? My fasting glucose level is high; cholesterol & triglycerides high; HDL low; LDL high. Also, am slightly anemic. I have been on this drug for a year & had never seen my lab tests so out of whack. My blood pressure has been great on this drug. I haven't gained/lost any weight. I do feel so sleepy & don't have my usual energy anymore at all. Would rather be sleeping than most anything else these days. Also, my arms & legs & eyes feel fatigued much of the time -- almost like a kind of "buzzing" in my arms hands & feet too. Also, get lots of flutters in my chest at times, which feel like skipped heartbeats. My heart beats fast at times, for no apparent reason. And I feel out of breath for no apparent reason. What's up with this drug???

I am 26 years old and have been on toprol xl for 7 years. I started on 50 mg and now my doctor has increased the dosage to 200mg. I am exhausted 24-7, I have joint pain so bad I can hardly function. i can't even hardly keep up on my housework and I can't work. My hair is falling out and has for 2 years now. I have no sex drive which is ruining my marriage. I just had bloodwork done and my tryglyceride level is 915 which it is suppose to be below 150. I just saw an article that said beta blockers will raise tryglycerides(which is fat in your blood). Also I still have high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, chest pains, palpatations, and "episodes" where i become really hot, pale, nauseated, have severe chest pains, cant move, and weird heart beats and my doctor doesnt know whats wrong. My doctor puts me on a special diet and tells me to exercise. I eat better than most people and still weigh 200 lbs. and I am 5 feet tall. I try to exercise but I am so tired and hurt so much, it is just about impossible for me to do. I felt this way for many years and my doctor doesnt seem to care. she blows me off when i keep telling her how I feel. I didnt even really know toprol could cause such harsh side effects. and now that i know that is why i feel so bad I cant do anything about it because i tried one time to get off the toprol for one day and almost ended up in the hospital because of how bad i felt(my heart)
