Lisinopril was the first medication my PCP prescribed for moderate hypertension. Almost immediately, I started to experience aching bones/joints and cramping muscles. Searching the internet, I read a number of reports that suggested that Lisinopril was made from the venom of snakes in South America. While many of today's medications are derived from natural plant and animal sources, this still freaked me out. I eventually came of this medication. I was then put on Felodepine, which wasn't much better. Then it was onto Catapres (Clonidine), which lowered my blood pressure, but didn't maintain it. After a reading of 171/110 just the other day while at the doctor's office, I'm on another medication Terazosin 1MG, plus Quinapril 40 MG. I have an unusual upset stomach, and a more pronounced heartrate that is at times quite disturbing. I also have a sinus infection and am on Augmentin, so I cannot point directly to the BP meds for these conditions. I agree with others that Lisinopril is just bad news. Glad I'm off of it.

Wierd. I have taken Bactrim before and had no incicent - that I can recall. Well, today I was diagnosed with Bladder infection - took 1st dose of bactrim and about twenty minutes later (as i'm walking into a restaurant), everything starts going haywire. First wicked itching, flushing of the skin - then eyes turn BLOOD red, face swells, tongue starts feeling fat and hurts - heart is pounding. I freak out - and throw some money on the table for a glass of tea - that I didn't drink - Husband rushes me back to clinic - as we both think I am having aniphilactic reaction. Terrified. Never experienced anything like it - my face swole up on the way - horrible. Wanted to scratch my skin off. Palms of hands, feet everything feels like its "asleep" and has needle like sensations. They ask if my airway is tightening (!) not yet? They give me a "steroid" shot (generic term I guess), and a Zyrtec. I start calming down on the way home - itching subsides and then chest pains begin - now I think i'm having a heart attack. I don't know if the trembling is from Bactrim or terror. I crawl into bed and start bawling - cuz I feel like I almost died. It scared the shit out of me. Husband paces and wrings hands. Now, hours later - I have sweats, fatigue (dramatic day), and heartrate is still elevated. Left tonsil hurts when I swallow. Yikes.

This is not my experience but my mothers; She's been taking this poison for 8 years. Her doctor finally(though her bagering) has her at 5 mgs. a day but it's already too late, her spine has had disc fractures to the point where she is completely hunched over, when she first started the drug she had normal bone density. Now her doc wants her sed rate to be 19 before he even considers taking her off the drug, which is ridiculous since I read that most women over 50 average s hard. My brother and I help with some shopping and things but both of us have other obligations(he works full-time; I have husband and two kids) so my dad has alot on his plate.
Prednisone destroys the body, eventually, and sometimes it makes the original condition look like a cakewalk.

I have used Advair for about a year. My asthma seemed to be seasonal like an allergy. During the time I used it I had a few "panic attacks". The doctor was ready to put me on Zoloft, an anxiety med. I never made the connection to the Advair usage. This stuff is dangerous. Increased heartrate, nervousness, tremors, all of the above. Get help elsewhere

I have been on toprol for almost 30days 25mg. I have been having anxiety, panic attacks especially at night. My body feels like it can't settle down and my heartrate is always faster than normal. My heartrate is normally around60's to 70's now it over 90's and I'm very tired and the first syptom I notice was tiredness. I am short of breath a lot I also thought it was allergies because my nose was stuffy but now I know it is this medication. I was doing just fine on my other B/P meds and I'm going back on them ASAP!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for sharing these horrible side effects I hope everyone gets off these meds and on something different.

I was put on Verapamil 120mg after being taken off of Atenolol which I had been on for 5 years. I also took Lisinipril along with the Atenolol. I had a couple of rough months getting off the Atenolol as there are some side effects to doing that. I was put on th Verapamil along with Enalapril and Hydrochlorithiazide, didn't feel well. Off the Enalapril and Hydrochlorithiazide now and have increased the Verapamil to 180mg. I feel so tired but can't sleep, have no energy and my heartrate is still up there. Doctor wants to add Digoxin, will this help or make it worse. I felt better on the lower dose but it wasn't controlling the BP.
Thank you for your time and would appreciate any info.

Previous poster please post the results of your Dr. visit regarding the "fast" heartbeat. Just about this time last year I had a problem with my stomach and mouth burning, which I
KNOW was Advair. The Dr. took me off the Advair and gave me medication for my mouth. Somewhere within a week following that, I went back for a re-check. My heartrate had always been in the low 70's. It was all over the board. It was going from the 50's up to 150 and falling back down. This went on for a week and after wearing a halter over the weekend I was sent to a cardiologist. I wore the halter again for 3 or 4 days. He decided it was the Albuterol I was using in my nebulizer. I was also using Atrovent too. They switched my Albuterol to Xopenex. Personally, I can't tell the difference, but within maybe 3 weeks my heartrate went back to normal. I was short of breath and I went back on 150/50 Advair. I am interested to know what your Dr. thinks may be causing the fast heartbeat, and I know there can be many causes. I have asthma too but now they say "COPD".
Please post the results of your Dr. visit. It's always nice to know what causes it.

Took Levaquin for 3 days starting August 8th for acute Prostatitis. It is now Sept. 21 and I only get 4 hours of sleep a night. It is awful. The initial reaction was my heartrate went to 120, I was nervous and agitated and called the Doctor to say I was going to the emergency room. He said go off the Levaquin and see what happens. End of sleeping!!!
Note: I got rid of the Prostatitis with Cephalexin. However, Because of heart reactions. I can't take Cipro, Levaquin or Cephalexin. Don't know what to do next time!!!! Wish the Pharmacuticals would come up with something that works without awful side effects!!!

Have been on 25 mg for about 6 weeks for hypertension. Wake at night with hands going to sleep. Very difficult to get my heartrate up to target range when exercising; gained about 8 lbs within 2 weeks.

I am 41 years old yesterday. I am 6'3" and 190 lbs. I have been on the med since Christmas Eve 2005. I had a BP of 200 over 120 when my sister, an RN, noticed I seemed hypertensive (my job is can be very stressful). With a family history of high BP and heart attack, she admitted me for tests. Head CT and chest were clear. I was started on 10mg for two weeks, then progressed to 20mg. I had no symptoms other than urgency to urinate quickly after meals and more often. My BP has come down to 140 over 96 as of yesterday. My doctor has progressed me to 40mg effective this morning. I am a little dizzy and unfocused. I am going to increase my exercise this evening to include situps. Hopefully, this will increase heartrate, and maintain the systollic pressure while the diastollic decreases. That should take care of the dizziness by oxygenating my blood more effeciently. I will keep you posted.

I've been taking toprol for over 3 weeks now for slightly fast heartrate. I've been experiencing headaches almost daily and a fuzzy (not with it in my head feeling) and my feet are cold alot, other than this, it's hepled me pretty much with the fast HB but I also experienced palps. before takinf the toprol, especially around that time of month, hoping it's hormonal and was told it probaby was, but the Toprol hasn't seemed to be helping that alot. I'm not real sure how I feel about the medication. I have another appt with my cardiologist on Monday the 21st of March. We'll see what she has to say. It's freaky putting crap like this in my body but a fast HB is creepier, but if I could get rid of the headaches, I think it would be fine.

Please bear with me as this is a bit of a long story. I was put on lisinopril 5 years ago for hbp (not bad - 140/85). 5mg of the drug quickly controlled it. But at a check-up a year later my doctor heard irregular heartbeats and added a beta-blocker to control heart rate. For the next few years I had terrible depression, throwing my whole life into a mess. Eventually I couldn't even work. I also had terrible joint pain all over my body, the cough, poor sleep, nightmares, red face, and skin so dry I was embarrassed to meet people. The depression clouded my thinking to the point where I just thought I was aging really rapidly and really badly. I never thought of the meds. Stupid, I know. Finally someone told me that beta-blockers can cause depression. That was all. I went to a new doctor and asked to go off the beta blocker. Miraculously, despite horrible withdrawl symptoms, mainly rapid heart rate (I too, went to the ER a couple of times), I immediately felt like a new person. Most of my side effects were gone but my heartrate has never been normal or regular. I have been off the beta blocker for 6 months and my bp is ok. Recently I went to a cardiologist because of the irregular heart beats and rapid heart rate. He renewed my prescription for lisinopril and scheduled me for a bunch of tests but now I'm wondering if the whole disaster has been from taking lisinopril all this time. Neither of my doctors have ever even thought of it but I've been doing some research, including finding this site. I know you don't just stop taking bp meds. Any input out there on getting my doctor to consider this as a possibility and also any other family of drug that would control bp without all these side effects?

I have been taking Toprol for over a year and have gained 15 lbs. Recently I noticed that my heartrate was very low. It is normally 65 resting and now it is in the fifties and and sometimes lower. I feel tired all the time and depressed especially since my doctor raised my dosage. I had my physical a few weeks ago and the doctor did an EKG and also put me on a monitor for 24 hours. The EKG was normal and the monitor showed that my heartrate was up and down and the toprol was said to be the problem. Now I don't know what to do since my doctor doesn't seem to be concerned.

I have been on Toprol for about a month, originally 50mg, steadily increased to 200. I did have the temporary dizziness, sleepiness, and "brainfog" that others have mentioned, but also extreme fluctuations in BP and heartrate. I have awakened in the middle of the night, sweating profusely, my heart beating rapidly, and feeling my pulse in every part of my body. A few hours later, I was so cold, that I couldn't get warm, no matter how much I covered up, and felt too weak to do anything about it. I have also awakened with large bruises that I didn't have the day before, and bleed profusely when scratched or cut. In the past few days, I have developed depression, and didn't know that it was a side-effect, until I got on the internet, and started reading other people's stories.

I am a bit confused. I have many of the symptoms for hyperthyroidism yet I have just been prescribed levoxyl by my physician. For example, I have lost 29 lbs. in the past 2 months and yet I have been eating regularly, my heartrate seems to fluxuate but toward the fast side, not slowing down. I have just started levoxyl 3 days ago.
Email with any insight to this delimna.

Not feeling any releif for depression. Loss of sleep, nervousness, shakey,Loss of appetite, Lack of concentration. However my moodswings are about 80% better and I don't get angry about things that would have before caused my Rage. I have been on Paxil CR for 3 weeks. Sometimes my heartrate is extremally rapid but this medication has it's pro's and con's.

Levoxyl is an evil drug. I went off on my own against doctors orders and found a doctor to prescribe the leading brand of natural hormone. After 6 months on Levoxyl, I had heartrate of 120 at rest. Nausea, diarrhea, hair loss, weight loss. I suffered on this stuff for 6 months because my "labs were in normal ranges". I took myself off, and within 9 days my heartrate had dropped to 84. No more nausea, bowels were fine. Found a new doc quick. I was only on .05 Will the docs tell the FDA about my side effects? Probably not, its their wonder drug...and they make plenty of $$ for prescribing it. They tried to convince me that synthetic hormones have no side effects. You could hold me down with a gun to my head and I would never ever take any brand of synthetic T4 again.

I am a 46 y/o male whom took lipitor 20mg for about 10 days. It was the first medication taken for me aside from occasional antibiotics. Within a week I began to develop severe nausea, weakness, postural dizziness and worst of all, chest pain at rest! I took my last dose last Saturday 8/9/08. Because of the chest pain, I went to the ER on 8/10/08 and discharged the next day after I ruled out for an MI and a negative exercise stress test. My chest pain recurred on 8/12. This AM awoke with nausea, dizziness and chest pain again. I'm going to have an adenosine stress test this PM. I consulted a pharmacologist yesterday about the metabolism of Lipitor and she told me indeed these side effects are not uncommon and in my case, Lipitor will not be eliminated from my body until probably this Sunday or early next week. Anyone experience what I'm feeling?
