My 8yo son has been on Singulair for his asthma for about 2 weeks and he has complained of a 'sick tummy' regularly, ending up in tears because he can't do things. We have had a long run of this, perhaps due to the 8 lots of penicillin for tonsillitis, and some tummy bugs going around the schools I work in. The doctor has been suggesting irritable bowel syndrome so we didn't think of the Singulair side effects until it has got so bad that he is not going to school. He has been unusually clingy and almost paranoid about small things that don't usually worry him over the past couple of weeks. We were trying these tablets as he has been on steroid based preventer since he was 3 and we wanted to get him off the cortisone stuff. After reading here he is off the Singulair today and we will report the side effects to the paediatrician.

I started taking Yasmin a year ago to help control my acne which the dermatologist described as adult acne or hormonal acne. It worked and cleared it up. Since then I have gone off of it twice, but the acne returns, so I go back on it. I went to the regular doctor this past week, and he diagnosed me with depression. The depression symptoms started around the same time I was put on yasmin. Could they be linked? I don't want to go off of it because my acne will come up, but it seems to have totally changed my personality. Thoughts??

I was prescribed Singulair to help control my asthma. I took 10mg for three days, but it made me incredibly tired. It was hard to get up in the morning and I was randomly falling asleep on my desk at work. I began taking half a pill (5mg) and intitially this was better. I was still tired in the mornings, but by noon it had worn off. However, over the next week additional side effects began to arise and increase in intensity. I could deal with the fever, headache, etc., but the mood swings were horrible. I couldn't stop snapping at people. When I broke out in hives, I knew the Singulair had to go. I have been off of it for two days now and am feeling better. The hives are fading and my mood isn't quite so gloomy. I expect I will return to my normal self by the end of this week.
Incidentally, Singulair did work fantastically well for my asthma. My peak flow average went up forty points and overall the readings were greatly stabilized with only small fluctuations. Unfortunately, the side effects just aren't worth it.

I have only been on Toporal for about a month, 50mg/day. My B/P is now stable, but I am having intermittant chest pain that travels down my arm and into my jaw. I am a 50 yr old female in good shape. I can say that I feel some anxiety daily and that is not normal for me. I have not noticed a weight gain, yet my doctor called today to tell me my potassium levels are too high. Has anyone else experienced this from this drug?

I too had chest pains!! That is something that they do no tell you.
This medication definitely needs to be re-evaluated by the FDA, to determine what damage it may do to your heart.
I was already seeing a psychiatrist for Panic disorder so I had valium at home. However, I still ended up in the ER for my chest pains after getting no call back from my dr for two weeks telling her that I was having all of the other side effects ( except the hair loss), tingling in the hands and feet, fatigue, moodiness, different tastes of things, especially colas.
Nevertheless, I was diagnosed at the ER with having a panic attack....DUHHHH, how could I possibly be having a panic attack when I had taken about 2 1/2 10 mg valium to try to get my chest to stop hurting. I explained to the ER dr. that I had started taking the topamax 3 weeks prior...There absolutely needs to be better education of this drug and its terrible side effects!!!

Kim,
I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been having. I have been on Yaz (Yasmin Lo) for about a month and am constantly searching for new information about this whole birth control thing and the side effects whether pro or con. I am taking the pill to help control what my GYN thinks is endemetriosis. Honestly, I don't want to be taking ANY pill everyday for years. I just want my body to function naturally. I have noticed I've had serious cravings and depressive mood swings since I've been on Yaz (not to mention, bleeding every single day) so I'm really searching for other methods. That sounds like way too much for your doctor to try and put you on birth control and anti-depressants. I don't think it's meant to be that way.....and perhaps the depression that you're dealing with is more of a spiritual matter. Prayer and peace from God have no side effects, don't come with supplemental medication and are completely natural. I plan to find a remedy created by Him. I'd love to hear what you decide to...I'll keep you posted on my quest to live drug-free.

I have been having this unbelievable sweating at about3:00AM that keeps me up from then until 6:00. I thought it was this new mattress we bought, but it suddenly dawned on me today that it may be the yasmin. I had a terrible shoulder pain that I thought was bursitis and now have absolutely no interest in sex...Before I went on I had been very interested. I also am experiencing that lack of interest in anything. i just want to be by myself and am not happy. Although I went on to prevent a surprise preg@ 40 and to help control major bleeding I am beginning to feel like it's not worth it. But after reading all these letters I'm terrified to go off!

I am now trying Singulair for the second time. It has been a couple of years but the Dr. insisted it would help control my asthma. My problem again is very dry eyes so dry that when I try to watch TV I have to close them. I have tried several eye drops and they only last a few minutes. Has anyone else had this problem?

hi dejay78,
snap on the greasy skin and hair, mine was really bad for a while.it is settling down a little now. i use ketsugo gel to help control the oily skin. i am still having problems with spots but that is the least of my concerns,i am just happy that i am getting better. you asked about how much magnesium to take. 350-500 a day should be enough to get your levels back up,you may need this dose for a month or two then you may be able to reduce it. you should also aim to take about 50-100mg b6 daily then reduce it down when you feel better. there is some suggestion that you should not take calcium and magnesium at the same time as they compete for absorbsion but it's up to you. i too had my thyroid checked after i stopped using the yasmin, mine was in fact hypo not hyper.i have hashimotos disease so was being treated with thyroxine but my level had been stable for years, now i have been off yasmin for 7 months i have been able to reduce my dose again...i guess that as thyroxine is a hormone maybe it is affected by birth control pills. i am sure you will see some improvement soon,as i said in my previous posting distraction techniques really help with the anxiety, keep busy or read a gripping book, you will see that when you are occupied you do not think about how you feel. i used to love having a rest and a lovely day dream,it sounds funny but it really helped me. A word of caution on the magnesium, too much can give you diarreah! you could try some camomile tea before bed to calm you and help you to relax,i have a few cups throughout the day and it helps.
best wishes.

Hello All,
I was surfing the net a few months ago and found this site. Ever since then I have been wondering if my health problems could be my BCP. I have been on Yasmin for nearly 3 years now and I came off of it in March of 05 in order to get pregnant with my daughter. I was taking Lexapro for anxiety and depression that had been diagnosed before Yasmin too. During that time, I felt great. I didn't really have any anxiety attacks or major depression for that matter.
Ever since I had my daughter though, I just keep having these terrible mood swings. One minute I'm happy as a lark, the next minute I just feel like Blah. I don't want to do anything or be around anyone. My sex drive is null in void. I don't even WANT to have sex. Honestly, I could care less about sex right now. I have episodes where all I want to do is cry and I've noticed my anxiety attacks have been getting worse.
My doctor put me on Yasmin because it was supposed to help control weight gain, yet I'm the biggest now that I've ever been. In 3 years I've gained 40 lbs. I am scared to talk to my doctor because I'm afraid he'll think I'm nuts. Do you think it could be the Yasmin and are there any "creditable" sites I can go to and get information about these side effects to show him? Thanks for the help.
Charity

I also suffer from puffy, irritated, dry eyes and when my dosage was too high, I also had bloating. Hair was falling out but I think it is slowing down some. Most of all I'd like to know what to do about my eyes, I can't seem to get any help from doctor.

Topamax? Did you mean "Dopamax"? That's what my new doctor said it is reffered to as in the mental health field. Dopey is exactly what I was while I was on it. I was prescribed it to help control weight gain while on anti-depressents. Hours after taking the first dose, I turned into a zombie. My head felt heavy. I could not focus enough to even read. I felt like everything was happening in slow motion and I wasn't able to drive. My family said I looked like I was constantly "doped up" and my eyes were always glassy. After a week of dealing with this and having to have my family drive me around, I decided enough-was-enough. The worst part was the withdrawl symtoms from it-constant ringing in my ears, sudden and frequent light headiness and the feeling of passing out. The cake-topper was the feel of a sudden electric pulse going through my head. My new doctor warned me before that I would experience that. Thank god, because I would have freaked out.

Take large doesage of Lamictal. 400MG in the AM and now 400MG in the PM. 7 months pregnant and the level keeps falling. It does work I think to help control seizures some. Still have a few cp seizures but not too bad.
Do have racing heart beat once or twice a week and when the dose in increased the dizziness does come with a vengance. Usually after a day or so the dizziness does go away.

I was given a sample (two packages) of Yasmin by my gynecologist to help control terrible period symptoms. I only completed one month due to the side effects. The good news was that I did not get the horrible cramps during the one month I was on Yasmin. However, the side effects were unbearable. I bled for almost three weeks, including light cramping throughout. I was nauseated and lost all appetite; I would forget to eat until I was about to pass out. However, the worst was its effect on my mood; I was having symptoms of anxiety, depression and paranoia, with an inability to think clearly. (As a counselor, I recognized these pretty quickly, though it took me a couple weeks to link these with the pill.) This is very abnormal for me, and I normally do not experience mood swings due to natural hormone changes. Also, I would have difficulty sleeping, and would wake up in the night terribly anxious and sad.
I realize that many or all of these side effects may have gone away after a couple of months. As bas as they were for me, that was not an option. Part of the problem for me was that the hormone levels were just too high; I am only around 100 pounds.
The good news for me was that my mood went back to normal in only a day or two after I stopped taking Yasmin. The odd thing was that I noticed a recurrance of mood symptoms the week before my next period, which came on schedule. I seem to have been back to normal permanently since then. For those of you with similar symptoms, I hope your rebound is as quick as mine. Don't get discouraged with a slight relaspe!

i have been on yasmin for three years. the first side effect i noticed was the dizziness. i used to have awesome balance (i was a gymnast), but now can barely stand on one leg with my eyes closed. the week after i started taking yasmin, i got in TWO car accidents and messed up my perfect driving record. i attribute it all to the dizziness.
i have PCOS...severely. my doctor perscribed yasmin to help control the disease and slow the facial hair i was slowly but steadily accumulating. PCOS also caused a me to develop muscles incredibly fast. i had a very boyish phsyique...broad shoulders, square waste, lots of muscle definition. i hated that so much that i felt the yasmin was my savior. he also put me on aldactone (spironolatone - the drug they say not to take with yasmin), but this caused me to become so exhausted and my hair to totally dry out. i went of the medication, but stayed on yasmin.
suddenly, i am experiencing horrible nausea and stomach problems. i can barely stand to eat anything other than yogurt. this has been going on for about a month, and i am so sick of being sick! i am also experiencing fluid retention to a severe degree. i am trying to flush it out by drinking tons of water, but i dont' think it's working. i have water in my ears as well. no one has been able to determine a reason that my ears hold water constantly. it's the worst pressure headache you'll ever experience. i believe yasmin is responsible for my nausea because when i had my period last week the nausea went away. sunday came around and I am back on the pill, and the nausea is back with a vengance. last night i dryheaved until i couldn't stand it anymore and just gave up and went to bed. i didn't sleep very well because of the numbness in my arms and legs. it's been keeping me up all night lately.
i scheduled a doctor's appointment tomorrow. i asked if they thought yasmin could be responsible for everything i've been experiencing, and they said not if i've been on it for 3 years. i'm so happy to have found this website. it makes me think i am NOT crazy and the pill is really messing me up.
i went of the pill for a week and lost five pounds previously. i'm hoping that going off for a while will be the right thing for me to do and i'll have relief from all of these horrible symptoms!

I was diagnosed w/ Crohn's Disease at the age of 15. I am now 18 and have had no luck w/ any drug that they have tried to treat me with. Endocort and Asacol. After two years of these two drugs they decided to try Prednisone because I was not getting better. I have been on it for one month at 30 mg a day. I love it SO FAR. I am waiting to see what happens. I am scared because I haven't heard the best things about Prednisone. I have had mild weight gain. I weighed 93 lbs and now I am a healthy 105. I am not getting fat, I am just putting on the weight my body was lacking. I looked anorexically skinny and now my body is healing so I am able to eat more and not get sick. I have had mild heartburn as well. Especially when I drink pop. I have had slight muscle cramps. The worst part is the acne I have been experiencing. It came on out of nowhere. But, just wash your face 2-3x a day and keep it oil free and you should be fine. And to help control the weight gain I work out 3x a week. I also am eating healthier foods.

My 6 yr old son started taking singulair three weeks ago to help control severe allergies and asthma. Within a few days he started exhibiting extreme agression. He would hit my husband and I every time we disciplined him, It got to a point where I was going to put him in some sort of therapy because nothing I did was working, but then my mom came upon this website. I feel relieved that others are going through this to. He went to the allergist on Wed. and he took him off the singulair. We can already see a difference in him.He continues to take Zyrtec, Nasonex and Advair, but he responds ok to these meds and he gets to start allergy shots on the 27th as long as his asthma remains under control. He will have 2 shots a week for the next 2-5 years. I will never put him on the singulair again, the allergist said there is one med. we can try in place of singulair if we had to use it.

My son has been taking singulair for three years--since he was two. It seemed to really help control his asthma (cough variant). He has recently become extremely violent--especially in school or with his baby brother. I did not realize singulair could be the problem. I also noticed he has been very moody and antisocial for the last year. We have tried extra attention, positive reinforcement, reduced and restricted tv/video viewing, modified diets, punishments--nothing seems to help the aggression. The only thing left we did not think about is the singulair. Any recommendations for taking him off? Is cold turkey ok, or better to decrease the mg (1/2 pill, then 1/4 pill, etc.) until he is off?

Hi thank goodness i've found this website as i've been on lisiniprol for 4 months now and the side effects are awful, but because i'm taking it to help control of heart failure my DR says I must continue with it.
There are some days I can't move to get out of bed because of pains in my shoulders and down my arms to my finger tips and, because I have arthritis i was thinking it had got worse, but after reading messages here I now believe its a side effect of lisiniprol.
I also have dizzy spells and on one occasion I blacked out but my DR told me to hold on to something when rising to my feet. and keep exertion to a minimum.
I gave up smoking a few months ago and I still have a persistent cough and some days I feel very depressed. I will now go back to her with a print out of this page and see if she is willing to believe these are side effects from the lisiniprol.
As I suffer from low blood pressure normally the lisiniprol now has me down to as low as 85/48 some days and I feel crap anyway I don't think they're for me.

I have been on Celexa for a little over a week for panic attacks/anxiety. The first 2 days I took it I felt like I was in a dream, light headed, tingly, pretty much just intensifying my problems in the first place so I stopped taking Celexa for a few days.. then I spoke with my doctor and she said to try taking it at night instead of the morning. So I began taking Celexa at bedtime. I didn't have much side effects except for a little trouble sleeping, but I actually was starting to feel "better", for about 4 days I was feeling really well and resuming normal activities. Then out of nowhere on that 4th day in the evening I got a really bad panic attack, and for the past 3 days since I've been feeling high anxiety and panic again. I don't understand, because I really felt like I was getting better. I told my doctor what has been happening and all she said was that its normal to have set backs and to continue the Celexa. I'm also taking Ativan to help control the anxiety until the Celexa "kicks in", but in the past few days nothing has been seeming to help. Has anyone experienced this? Is it because I've only been on Celexa for a week? I feel like I am going crazy being back in this lightheaded fog.
