Hey Ladies,

I've had Mirena for just about a year now. For the past couple of months I've had almost no period. Spotting here and there. Then I got some pretty gut wrenching pain. Then suddenly I started full on period. I thought no big deal. Then there was a ton of clotting and pain. That was 3 weeks ago. I am still on my period to this day. I feel drained of energy. On Saturday I feel asleep at 10pm and had to make myself get up at 2pm that next day.
Has anyone had the same problem and what should I do?

Hey ladies,
As many have said, I thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I didn't have my period except a few days of VERY light brown gunk. But what brought me to the doctor was the lack of sex drive which had been affecting my home life. So she mentioned the Mirena, I made an appointment that day to have it taken out tomorrow, and then I went home and googled the side effects. I have been glued to these forums ever since. Now looking back I am sure that I have had side effects. I gained about 10lbs, acne, and lost hair (all I have contributed to stopping breastfeeding my daughter) I have been VERY moody around my period, and have slight back pain when I sit (which is all day) I now understand why I am always tired and I feel like a 60yr old getting out of bed each morning. I don't know if all these things are linked but I will get it out and find out!!! I will report back with how I feel as I see that they are having different effects.

Hey Ladies it Jen, I had the mirena taken out about 3 weeks ago and let me just say i feel so much better. My mood swings are gone, I have lost 7lbs, my face is clearing up. I still have anxiety attacks but not as often, i was told that it takes up to two years for whatever was in the mirena to get out of your system. I have a lot more energy and there is NO MORE ODOR!! That was the second worst thing ever. If you are having problems with the mirena please get it taken out. Listen to your body!! From what i hear there is a lawsuit against the mirena. I kept mine just in case something like this was to go on. For those of you who are taken action into your own hands and taking the mirena out yourself, keep the device!! Something is going to be done about this horrible device that is making women think they are losing their minds. Keep posting and keep your health first!!

Hey ladies, been on Nuvaring for about 3 weeks now... at first I really loved it... hardly notice it is there(had to actually check to make sure it did not come out) and my fiancee does not feel it and it does not cause any discomfort in urination or intercourse. The major problem I have with it, is the discharge it leaves behind! Everyday since I inserted it, I have had a thick darkish red discharge, i have never had an infection and it does not hurt, but I literally had to go out and buy walmart panties because I was ruining all of my expensive panties! Totally embarrassing, feels like my panties are damp all the time,,, and since I work out everyday after work, I feel sooooo disgusting and dirty while I am working out. Other side effects are bloated feeling, weight gain, and a bit of irritability... I am normally a very easy going gal, but I have noticed I can switch my mood in a second these days... man scary to read all these other horror stories... is it worth it?

Hey ladies- I have had mirena almost two years now, when i first had it implanted it was horrible, cramping and spotting for months. then i had a normal light period at the same time every month just up until a few months ago then no period, which scared me! i am not pregnant just no periods anymore, which i'm not so sure i like. besides that i have had so many rotten symptoms from mirena. Cramping, cysts, stomach pains on either left or right side that all i can do is lay in bed, mood swings, eating a lot, gaining a lot, acne which i haven't had in years, so much more that i try and forget about yet i feel like not the same person i was before. I am going to have it removed this week and am unsure of what to use for birth control now. What did you ladies do that have had it removed? Any pill that doesn't have so many effects that have worked for you? I am in a time crunch and really need advice from all of you who have gone through this mirena bs too! Please please email me your tips thanks!!!!

Hey ladies! I am not shocked to hear all of this! I had the Mirena placed in me on July,10,2008. It is now October 27th, 2008. Almost 4 months with this in me and i feel like crap! I mean, i thought my headaches were from lack of sleep or something. Im cramping all the time, I have had sharp pains in either right or left side of my stomach but never both sides at the same time. I broke out with acne on my arms UGH and i have never had acne on my body. When i have a period, they are heavy, i fill the toilet up with blood, i fill up a pad in NO time, it lasts a lil over a week, and i have had meat like substances (looks like intestines, or chewed up hamburger *sorry*), and dime & nickle sized clots pass out of me! I have a picture of it and dated time of the passings. When i called a nurse about the passing of the meat and clots, all she had to tell me was "take a pregnancy test and if negative, then take Motrin tablets and see if that helps" WHAT?! I have noticed im a lot angrier now. Its not a pretty sight. =/ I have 1 child, my son (22mths old). I haven't noticed weight gain, maybe at the beginning but i figured it was bloating. When i talked to a different nurse about all of this a while ago, she had thought the mirena had fallen out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Uhm noone told me about this happening!!!!! All i heard was the best about it and not the worst! I havent taken a pregnancy test yet, im so scared to! I cant afford another little one right now! =/ I am going to weigh this out one more month, because they did tell me it takes 3 months to adjust. So after another month, by December, if its still the same. Im removing it.

Hey ladies, I had posted a couple of days ago about the mirena and how I had all these symptoms and thought that it was from moving away from my family to be with my fiance. Well guess what!! I had called my ob and she admitted to me that the mirena could possibly be part of my problems. Now grant it she is not the one that put it in there in the first place. She said that she will certainly have no problem removing it if that is what I want. No telling me I was crazy or trying to talk me out of it or nothing. I cannot believe it!!! So now I am going to have it taken out next week. I really hope that all these side affects will disappear. I am a little nervous though. Good luck to all of you and I hope you to will find peace!

Hey Ladies! Finally! I know whats wrong with me! I have been on the NR for almost 2 years now, and I'm taking it out today! I have gained almost 15lbs in the past two years and I am super emotional I never pmsed before NR, me and my bf fight so much more because i always seem to find something wrong with what he did and after talking about it i see how freaking ridiculous my reaction was. We were having sex like 3 times a week and now I'm lucky if I'm in the mood every 3 weeks. Ladies if you don't care about the side effects spair your man and get off the NR!

Has anyone had extreme heavy bleeding/clots after having the Mirena removed? This is day 3. The last time I had such heavy bleeding I had just had my son. When do you start to worry about the bleeding?

Wow ladies!! First off, thank you, all of you, for taking the time to share your stories.

I had my Mirena inserted mid March 2008. It is April 3rd today, and so far I'm not a fan.

Insertion was easy. I barely felt anything. Minor cramping afterwards, some spotting. The worst part was the black gritty sand like discharge. (previous poster compared it to coffee grounds) Every time I sat down or stood up I could feel the grit rubbing inside me. It was the most AWFUL feeling in the world.

I have been spotting every single day since insertion. I did have a full period (started a few days before Easter) and it lasted about a week and a half. It was moderate to heavy. I did have more than usual cramping for me. And with every cramp I felt a sharp stab in my uterus. I imagined it was my uterus pressing down on the IUD. It was very uncomfortable. Now my "period" is over and I am still spotting! Its strange though. My discharge is clear, but with streaks of purpleish/brown blood. Its not typical spotting. But i've ruined one too many pairs of good underwear so its starting to get on my nerves!!!! I thought this was supposed to STOP bleeding. I've bleed every day in some shape or form.

My one month checkup is on the 10th. I am going to express my concerns with my doctor, but I know she'll blow me off like everyone else. I am getting a lot of pressure from my husband to keep it, despite the side effects. We already have 4 children, and dont want any more for a few more years.

Other side effects I am experiencing that I can only assume are from the Mirena (they might not be, but I cant explain them any other way):

- I feel stupid! Im spacey, i cant think straight. Very forgetful. Simple jokes go over my head.
- my vision is wacky. I feel like im staring through a haze. I have a hard time focusing on objects or fine print. I have never had a vision problem before!
- i feel weak and woozy occasionally.
- extra crampy. and often feel pings and pangs in my uterus.
- increased thirst
- slight paranoia. I actually feel like all my friends are mad at me, when i know they arent.
- I sweat at night.
- moody.
- my nails are all dry and splitting. I normally have very healthy nails
- a general feeling of laziness. It takes a ton of motivation to get up sometimes. I have 4 kids and I work full time...I'm not a lazy person! I cant be! So this feeling is very frustrating!
- I'd rather sleep than have sex. which for me is abnormal. I am more of a hornball than my husband usually. hahaha

wow this list is longer than I thought!!

I'm going to give this thing more time. But so far I am not a fan. I know it works for some women....but these things were not in the little pamphlet they pass out! I guess if they were no one would get this thing!

Thanks for listening!

Hey ladies I am so glad I found this site I thought I was losing my mind! I just had a miscarriage and have been emotional anyway but I felt like I did not have a grip on myself. I had never felt this way before and was really starting to scare myself. I just didn't know how to explain what was going on with me. I started the NuvaRing December 12, 2007 and took it out on the 19th when I saw this site the first time and I feel better already. I can only image the things the rest of you have gone through but through your testimonies I saw myself heading down the same road. I am usually a fun loving, energetic, funny person. In the 7 days the ring was in I was becoming a mess.I was very withdrawn to the point that family and friends were starting to worry about me and everyone else noticed the change before I did.I was depressed before I put the ring in and it just intensified as the days went on. My mate and I were constantly getting into it and we usually are able to communicate very well. I have a friend also on NuvaRing and was wondering why she had been doing a lot of crying and seemed to be depressed. She even went to the point of seeking professional help thinking some thing was wrong with her. I immediately told her as well. Unfortunately she has been on it longer than me and wants an alternative before her nightmare of NuvaRing is over. I couldn't help it I had to take it out I don't like feeling like I have no control over myself. Condoms for right now will be my best friend and I have a peace of mind.

Hey ladies! I wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing one of the many systems that I'm experiencing. I started the Nuva ring a week ago and just yesterday I started breaking out in a rash all over my body. The rask on my hands is so severe it look like puss, rash on my neck, legs, forehead, and arms. This is terrible!! I looks like a desease. I never experience this before (It has to be the Nuva ring). I feel moody, sleepy no matter how many hours of sleep I have, and tightness on my chest. I've read that some of you ladies are experiencing lower sex drive, well I'm experience higher sex drive and extra lubrication since I went on it. No discharge or spotting yet.I hjaven't been able to go to the doctor due to my loaded schedule. Any advise or any one experiencing the same? Thank you all for posting your comments to share with the rest of us, it really helps to see we are not alone.

Thanks,

JD

hey ladies... i've been on yasmin for a year, had all the effects - i went from being a 34 c, now a 38c/d... i gained 3 stone, in part due to the yasmin, had really teary times, id cry for no reason, and wonder why i cried the next day...

anyway... i came off yasmin - my partner realised that i had headaches at the same time each month - a day or too after comin off the yasmin, until my period started, felt like my vision was... flickery wi the headaches...

so when i last saw my partner - he wrks, an im stil at uni - on the 15 oct, wen my last period started, i decided, no more yasmin...

but today, i woke up feelin crampy, and have had to put a pad on, coz im bleeding! not sure if its jus break thru, or a period, or a withdrawal bleed from the yasmin? any ideas?

also, ive had SO MUCH probnlems wi doctors - one suggested to me this was just "mental issues" i was experiencing - didnt go back to him... ive had coutless blood tests, coz they think i may have an underactive thyroid, goion in for another one, and coz i was originally put on the pill for heavy crampy periods - wen i was 11, thats 9yrs ive been on the pill now, im scared that they will be as heavy and crampy as they used to be - an i may have investigations, swabs etc to see if im alright inside, to see what makes me so crampy... n then, i may be put on the mini pill to stop the cramps!

wish id know how yasmin does make you feel - some drs will not prescribe yasmin, others think its amazing...

its the most expensive contraceptive on the nhs in the uk...

but for me, its not the best for my body...

sorry for the long post, but it needed to be said:)

any advice anyone?

Hey ladies

I've never had any panic attacks or anxiety with Yasmin, in fact I believe mine has decreased... but that is the problem! I hardly feel any emotion, no desire for sex unless initiated by my bf, constantly lethargic and tired.. some chest pain at night, and insomnia/anxiety around ovulation

But my biggest side effect is SEVERE headaches. they are disabilitating, come without warning, and are so intense and severe that I can not make it through my daily day. If I take my pill at the EXACT same time everday, the headaches are minimal, however, if I take the pill a half hour or hour later than I am suppose to, the headaches will persist throughout the entire month... Did anyone else experience headaches like this?

Also, my actual period was not how it was suppose to be...very sticky and chunky it was scary.

In general, I believe Yasmin was just making me feel sick. I had really bad experineces with other birth control (ortho tri cylclen low made me puke every morning as well as get my period randomly) and I have decided to give my body a break. I am using Vivex (chaste tree berry) and St Johns Wort to keep my periods regular and avoid any of the depresssion that hear comes from quitting bcp. I only hope my body can regulate itself and return to normal!!!

Hey ladies... so I've just been to 2 doctors in the past few days. About my problems... well, the one jackass doctor is treating me for Depression, which I sort of disagree with.. he would not take my opinion about MYself. The gyno said that there's a really small percentage, like less than 1%, of patients who experience problems with sleeping while taking ANY birth control pill. That guy's an ass, too. I'm not trying to offend anybody, but these doctors, especially male docs, do not understand anything a woman goes through. They know it through their textbooks. And the gyno man actually had to get his Encyclopedia of Birth Control book out to look the information up. That was a waste of a copay. I could've done the exact same thing...and what he told me was what I already knew. He would not let me speak, not explain to him what the other doc told me... And after waiting almost 2 hours to see him, I was pretty much furious last night... and well, did not get much sleep again from it. So, yeah, I guess it's Depression time. And the doc I saw today, who prescribed me meds for it, gave me Lexapro...and one of the occurring side effects, a major one, is sleeplessness/restlessness. Go figure. My advice would be to see a female doctor...someone you trust, someone you can rely on for answers. And try to speak up when you have that chance to. I tried but was unsuccessful. I really don't think I have Depression, but I'm gonna have to see how these new meds work. Good luck, everyone. Keep in touch.

Hey Ladies,
I've been reading your posts of the last few days and feel compelled to write again((I posted last week). I have been working with a naturopathic endocrinologist for a little more than a week. He explained exactly what b/c pills do to your system; forgive me if this has been said before! Basically, the pills fake your body out into thinking it's getting PROGESTERONE, but in fact, it's getting PROGESTIN, which is a synthetic hormone. So, your body "thinks" it's getting enough, or possibly too much PROGESTERONE, so it begins making more ESTROGIN, which is one of the major culprits for many of our "ill effects" as he calls them. Yasmin, as you know, also has the diuretic in it, which actually dehydrates you and you really have a hard time catching up and getting rehydrated. I actually saw a "mainstream" female endocrinologist first and she said all of my hormone levels were NORMAL. When I saw my new dr., he said my levels were at the LOWEST end of what's considered normal, which is considered pretty bad by those that really understand these things. I encourage everyone still suffering to have your hormone levels tested; the saliva test is apparently pretty accurate, if not, a blood test works too. I' m now taking at least 15 supplements 2X/day in addition to progesterone cream to get my hormone levels back to normal. This is after having only been on the pill for 5 mos and OFF for 8 mos. The damage can be quick and unfortunately, long lasting without some kind of intervention. I'm feeling better already and the swelling and bloating is starting to go down. The weight gain is creaping downward but that's better than not at all! If anyone would like information on this send a general email and I'll respond personally.

Blessings.
Rita

Hey ladies, Silke, Joanne and all of you out there suffering,

I recently went to a top notch endocrinologist after my gyne denied everything I complained about the yasmin. I asked him what he knows about yasmin. His answer " another form of bc out the the 35 brands available." I told him of my symptoms and he said it all makes sense. each body reacts differently and that it takes 6 months at least to get back in balance. I'm almost 5 months off yasmin. 1 natural period. My most severe side effects is weight gain and plummeting libido. Sometimes I feel the water retention will drive me mad. However some days are better than other which gives me some hope that I might still creep out of this unscathed in the future. Cheer up and keep your chin up everyone. There are better days ahead. Let's just support each other . As they say " all good things come to those who wait."

Hey ladies,

ok, variation on what I've seen so far. I've been off Yasmin for about 2 1/2 months now after having been on it for about 4 years & although I work out hard 4-5 times a week & have not changed my eating habits in the slightest I am slowly adding on pounds! Every time I get on the scale there's a new one staring me in the face! My belly's bloated & hard as a rock & I can barely get my rings on & off! Is this water retention or am I really gaining weight??? What the heck is going on with my body & will it stop, or should I start dieting??

Help!

Hey ladies... I'm 24 years old and I've been on Yasmin for the past two or so years. The first year or so, I was side effect free and I thought that the pill was the greatest thing invented by science. I used to run around promoting it to every female on knew because I thought that this was the end-all-be-all of oral contraception. But then things changed, gradually over time... and now that I'm reading all of these complaints of negative side effects that I too experience- and now I'm freaking out.

Here is the rundown of side effects that I have:
-Fatigue
-Weight Gain (happened about 6 months ago, all of a sudden gained 10-12 lbs despite diet and exercise)
-Violent Mood Swings
-Psychosis
-Depression
-Anxiety
-Paranoia
-Constant Hungryness
-SEVERE Acid Reflux
-Major Digestive Problems
-Panic Attacks
-Achey Joints
-Muscle Fatigue
-Migraine Headaches
-Lump in Left Breast
-Racing Heart
-Heart Palpitations (left-center of chest, almost daily)
-Night Sweats
-Nightmares (nightly... and really terrible ones)
-Insomnia
-Monthly Spotting
-Multiple Periods Per Month
-Mysterious Abdominal Pains (like... lower abdomen)
-Thinned Hair
-Generally, a Complete Bitch
-Weird Discharge
-Acne like the dickens (and in places like... my eye area?)
-Cloudy Thinking/Zero Concentration

I could write more... but you get the point.

Right now, I'm feeling really guilty for ruining the wonderful relationship that I had with my boyfriend. Because of my general psychosis, he has begun to second guess our relationship- I mean, who wouldn't second guess things when your girlfriend is a complete mess. I just hope that I can return to my old self after coming off of these pills- because right now. I also feel sorry for my family for having to deal with me being unstable for the past few months. It's been a terrible strain on all of my personal relationships.

I feel like a really sad psycho-bitch with a lump in her left breast that can't even sleep through the night at age 24.

My Ob/Gyn has always encouraged me to be on some form of birth control (for obvious reasons), but I have to say that I'm going to have to go against medical advice on this one. When I get my period on this pill, it is also the (excuse me for saying this) the smelliest, most clot-ridden, painful, heaviest and most disgusting mess ever.

My previous experience with BCP's was Ortho Tri-Cyclen and I originally came off that pill because it gave me no sex drive, huge boobies that I didn't want, and extreme mood swings. Now that I've also had this terrible experience with Yasmin, I'm calling it quits in the artificial hormone adventures. It's strictly condoms and diaphragms for this girl. Risking my health and causing permanent damage was NEVER what I intended for... I just intended on not getting pregnant and having a regular cycle.

Ladies... I'm throwing the pills in the trash TODAY. If you are smart, you will do the same. These artificial hormones have ruined my life... and all I can hope for is that I can repair the damage that they have done. If you're thinking "gee, I've been on these for like 9 months and I'm fine!"- think again. It will happen to you. It happens to everyone. Save your body and your soul from complete hell by throwing the pills away TODAY.
