Hi,
I have had my Mirena since March 2007 and until Nov 2008 have not had any real complications. I do still have a period, it's lighter but lasts just as long. In Nov 2008, I started having problems with dizziness, stomach pain, nausea and at the time I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection, I also had a CT scan done which was normal. But after taking the antibiotics as prescribed the symptoms persisted for 3 weeks then went away. It all started again in Feb 2009, waking with severe nausea every morning, loss of appetite, tired and stomach pain. I went to the ER and had bloodwork which was normal, and a urinalysis, which showed a UTI infection. I was given antibiotics for this, but yet the symptoms persisted for 3 weeks. Both of these episodes followed my menstrual cycle. After the last bout, in which I feel completely normal, it started again. My period was two weeks late this month (March 09) it started on March 18th and on March 19th I started experiencing all these symptoms all over again. I have, bloodwork, preg tests, a colonoscopy, a stool sample, and a pelvic ultrasound, all of which have been normal. I am scheduled in a week to have an ultrasound of my gallbladder, but I really don't think that's my issue. I have lost weight, have no appetite, and wake every morning at the same time with nausea. I am seeing my family Doctor again tomorrow, he has discussed sending me to an ENT, but he is also removing the IUD tomorrow. He is doubtful that it is causing these problems after two years, but said strange things happen so better remove it to be safe.

I am 31 and just gave birth to my first baby in April, in June i had mirena inserted. Since then I have felt awful and it keeps getting worse. At first I was just very dizzy, after a month of the dizziness i went to my ob and she said it is not a side effect from the mirena, so i started taking meclizine not thinking anything of it. In October I started getting terrible cramping. I went to the ob and i had a large cyst growing on my ovary, she told me that some people claim that mirena causes cysts but that she didn't think it was a cause. She told me that after pregnancy my hormones are trying to regulate and thats why the cyst grew. Well luckily it went away on its own but I have been developing these cysts every month and they are getting very large and then bursting. Trusting my ob, I assumed it was just my body and age. I also have been having trouble losing my baby weight. I was 125 before I got pregnant and now 10 months later I am 175 and I have been working out every day! I have been very moody, tired, I feel like im in a fog and I don't want my husband to touch me. I thought maybe it was just because I was not loosing the weight and I am exhausted from trying to take care of my baby and stay in shape when I feel like such crap but now I think its the mirena. This is not like me at all and I was feeling good after the pregnancy up until about 2 moths after having the mirena inserted. The most recent symptoms started in late November. My glands started to swell in my head and neck and my muscles started aching. I thought maybe I had the flu and it cleared up in about a week. About 2 weeks ago I started getting really dizzy, my vision was blurry, my eye was very dry and it hurt, i could feel a lot of pressure on my head and i was having chills at night. I went to my primary dr. and was diagnosed with an inner ear infection, she gave me antibiotics. It cleared up and I was feeling better after about 10 days, well its 3 days later and its back, all the same symptoms and swollen glands. I have never had these symptoms in my life and I feel like I have something seriously wrong with me. The ob doesn't believe me and wont get me in until march 17th. I want everyone to know these symptoms because the ob will most likely not tell you, and even though it may work great fro some women it has some serious side effects for others. These side effects should be available to everyone because its not fair that you are trying to take care of a new baby and have to feel like crap, and on top of that you feel like your going crazy because the doctors don't believe you! Good luck to everyone who has mirena.

Im 35 have 2 children and had mirena fitted in Feb of 2008. It was the most painful thing i have ever experienced. There was a med student in the room when he did it and she said after it was over that was the most brutal thing shes ever seen. After it was inserted i bled for about two weeks but it did let up. In the months that followed I experienced the acne,(i have always had clear skin), the weight gain, the fatigue, the headaches, the fogginess, and the worst to me was a major personality change. I was miserable. Depressed and extremely on edge all the time. I blamed my constant crankiness on the fact that I could no longer fit into any of my clothes, and the 15lbs that i had gained. In August my mom asked me if i was pregnant cuz she said I looked like i was. The day after my mom said that I went to weight watchers and did manage to lose 10 of those lbs. Which isnt that great considering i lost 42 lbs in 4mths when i went on it after i had my 2nd daughter and it took me 3 1/2 mths to lose 10! Anyway, 2 weeks ago i started with this dizziness and the tingling feeling in my arms and legs. Went to the doc and she said I had an inner ear infection. Took the meds she gave me and still felt crappy. Then last Monday i had a total breakdown. I couldn't get out of bed, the left side of my face was feeling like it was numb. My cousin came to see me and asked me what was wrong and I simply said "I think im losing my mind!" She said well u haven't been yourself since you had "that thing put in". So her and i got on the computer and googled mirena side effects and WOW!! I could not believe what I was reading. I could relate to every woman's story. I called my doc and had to fight with the idiots at the front desk but I got an appointment tues the 25th to have it removed. The doc looked at me like I was crazy when I told her what was going on. She said theres no way mirena was causing that and i should go see a neurologist but shed take it out for me anyway just to ease my mind.
Well let me tell you how I feel today 5 days post mirena. I feel WONDERFUL!!! I actually felt better within an hour after she removed it. The tingling and numbness stopped and that foggy feeling was gone, and my insides no longer felt like they were being squeezed together. I started heavy bleeding on Friday (at walmart on black Friday, to give you a laugh). Im going through a tampon every two hours but i have to say it feels wonderful. I just feel great I don't care about the bleeding at all thats how good I feel. My stomach is flat again, and when i weighed myself this morning i was 7lbs down from Monday, and i haven't been dieting at all, ate like a cow on thanksgiving. I even look different in the mirror. I swear my skin had a grayish tint to it when i had the mirena and today im all pink and rosy again. When i think about how i felt and the mths of my life that i lost, i cant believe a form of birth control caused that. They really need to educated people more on this device. Yea the thought of not having a period is cool but at what expense? Ill take my period over feeling like that any day!

I am currently taking levaquin for a sinus and double inner ear infection, i have also taken this antibiotic before,i am 35 years old. I think this drug works wonderfully and tell the doctor this drug works the best for me.i have noticed a harder time falling asleep if i take it too late in the evening and some mild stomach cramping if i do not eat at least 2 hours prior to taking it.i also take it with a full glass of water.some of the side affects listed in this blog that people are describing are normal if you read your insert that comes with the medication. And if you follow the directions and eat and drink with a full glass of water the side effects are not as severe.Unless you are allergic to the drug,i do not find it bothersome knowing i will not be taking it forever and it is just temporary that i will be having a hard time falling asleep.i do eventually fall asleep. My suggestion while taking this medication if you are in reasonably good health,is to read the directions about eating and drinking plenty of water and don't panic, that just makes things worse.

Your statement is 100 percent true . Dry mouth like you could not imagine , high blood pressure , swelling of the face and anxiety like crazy . Thank You for the info , I don't know why my doctor never mentioned any of these side effects . I thought it was rare that they were wanting to do blood work on me AGAIN after just recently having one . I'm done . I will modify my diet and continue working out at the gym .

I had the flu and then some really bad vertigo which made me vomit. the doctor prescribed Prednisone for an inner ear infection he said I had. I guess he thought some sinus congestion may have caused this. However, the whole process has been horrible. I had night sweats which I never really considered until here. Mostly I have had very cloudy vision and continued vertigo. hard to concentrate or read. Not sure how anyone could work their job on this..unless you can work while laying down with your eyes closed..also, my throat feel like its going to slam shut and not open again. I just took my last pill. 20mg three times a day for 5 days..I hope the stuff gets out of my system quickly. wont take this again!

II started taking Lipitor in August of 07. My cholesterol was 180 with my good always being low in the 30's. My first blood test revealed a dramatic change in my readings with my total being 144 and my good rising to 41. At the end of December I started developing a slight ringing in my ears which progressed into a stiff aching neck, burning eyes and equilibrium issues. As someone else describe having whip lash. I was told by my doctor that these are not side effects due to Lipitor. I have also developed a buzzy feeling in the nerve in my right calf with slight weakness sensation in my thigh. The symptoms are constant and exhausting to deal with. It has been six weeks since the onset of these symptoms. I was given an antibiotic for an inner ear infection but no change in symptoms. I have seen a neurologist which gave me exercises to do for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, wasn’t that. I am waiting to see an ENT in two weeks to see what he comes up with and then back to a different neurologist after that. I keep asking myself is it the Lipitor? I am going to stop taking it to see if these symptoms disappear.

I have read some of the board and would like to know if anyone else has had prolonged side effects after being off Prednisone for almost a year. I think Prednisone caused all my current health problems. Was on the higher dose 5 day plan for a severe inner ear infection. I stopped taking it after the third day cold turkey, which I know was wrong because of blurred vision and stomach distention so bad I thought I was going to burst (almost the same as when I was pregnant). The first 4-6 weeks of stopping it were pure _ ell. So many withdrawal symptoms. I went to my doctor and he said I couldn't possibly be having all those symptoms from the Prednisone since I was only on it three days (but it is the regimen where you take the higher doses/multiple pills in the beginning and then it lowers the dose each day). Every few days it seemed I was having something new happen - heartburn, sweating, headaches. Then my thyroid function began acting up (hypothyroidism) and glands seem to swell with my monthly cycle. I started having a daily dry throat. All my symptoms seem to be on my right side: blurred vision, dry throat, swollen lymph glands, ear pain, groin swelling. It is one month shy of a year when I originally took the Prednisone and nothing has decreased, only new symptoms appear. My doctor keeps treating each symptom individually and won't look at the whole picture. I tried acupuncture and it didn't help. Any suggestions/comments?

I had the Mirena inserted in October 07 because of very heavy menstruation problems. I have never tolerated the pill so I was nervous about the possible hormonal side effects of the Mirena, My GP and Gyno both played the side effects down and maintained that the dose of hormones was so small and only released "locally", whatever that means. The first month was ok, I spotted daily and did not experience any other serious side effects, just the occasional cramping. The first day of my Mirena period I had a massive vertigo attack, spinning out of control for a couple of hours. I was due to catch a plane that day and had to cancel my weekend away with my husband. My GP maintained it had nothing to do with the Mirena and that I had an inner ear infection. From that day on I experienced chronic dizziness, and increasing symptoms of heart palpitations, nausea and anxiety. By the end of the second month, I felt I was loosing my mind, becoming extremely irritable and very anxious for no apparent reason. My body felt like it was in a constant state of alert. I decided to have the Mirena removed and experienced almost instant relief form the dizziness and chronic anxiety. I "crashed" 9 days later for about 4 days when all my symptoms came back with a vengeance and it felt pretty scary. 6 weeks post Mirena I feel chronically fatigued and have achy and weak legs. I have consulted a naturopath who has given me a cocktail of vitamins, minerals and instructed me to be alcohol free, caffeine free, wheat free and cow's milk free. I try to walk my dog once a day and eat extremely healthy food and sleep. I have had to stop work for a month. The Mirena experience has been a disaster for me and I am still waiting to get back to my normal self. Reading this site does give me support in knowing that others have experienced similar debilitating symptoms. I have felt very let down by the lack of medical support and understanding of what Mirena can do to you.

Started Lamictal for Bi-polar II after two weeks of taking low dose, I felt so much better and focused. Then I got a sore on left side bottom tounge then an inner ear infection, and left side swollen glands under my jaw and on my shoulder blade. I went to a Dr. and she said no rash keep on medication. I have always been really healthy. I've never had these reactions ever to anything else I have teken over the years.
I also take Clozapan 0.05. This helps to calm me instantly.
I am going to continue for now, because I feel better in my mind.

I am a 34 year old and have been taking Yaz for almost a year.
I had some minor side effects until this past month when everything came apart at the seams. I do not know if yaz is the culprit - but the number of women with the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS as me listed here SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME.
My "minor" sude effects were the following:
* No period for 5 months
* No sex drive (was not the case before taking Yaz)
* Panic attacks / anxiety (no history fo this. My doc has now put me on Zoloft.)
* Bloating / weight gain
* Brown blotches (like age spots) on one side of my face
This is NOTHING compared to the last month of my life. Basically my life has sucked for the last month. Roughly a month ago my symptoms started with a red rash on the left side of my face and pain in my left ear that led to a migraine that has not gone away at all. (The pain level goes between a 5 and 10, but never lower than a 5.) The rash went away in 2 days, but my ear still hurts today (a month later).
My vertigo began roughly 5 days after the onset of my rash and ear pain and has been non-stop since. I've taken phenergan, valium, etc. - but they are not working. I get spinning/dizzy every time my head moves (up, down, left, right) and with up and down eye movement. It seems like my migraine pain intensifies when my vertigo hits me. If I lie completely still - I have no vertigo - but my migraine is still there. To make matters worse, I have become very disoriented, like I am in a fog all of the time. I am only 34 years old and feel like I am losing my mind. I cannot remember simple words at times and have a tough time completing sentences.
All of these symptoms coincide exactly to the day I began a new packet of the birth control pill called YAZ (Yasmin). I had taken this brand of pill for a year, and though it has worked (not pregnant) I have had some minor side effects up until the last month. The biggest side effect is that I have not had any period at all for the last 5 months. I have also had anxiety (no past history) and have no sex drive (not my normal self.) I stopped taking the pill about a week ago - after reading literally thousands of people with the same side effects I am experiencing on a website called medications.com (My neurologist also told me to stop taking it.)
I am NOT having ringing in my ears or loss of hearing. I mention this because I know other ailments have these as symptoms.
I have already been seen by my dentist, physical therapist, ENT, 2 neurologists and a gyn. So far - they are not helping. I have even been hospitalized for 5 days and all they really did was try and dope me up to sleep and had me take a very potent anti-migraine drug called DHE that must be administered over a 36 hour period via IV. Guess what? It did not work.
The most scary thing is that even though I get severe vertigo any time I move my head (even to the point of waking me up while I sleep) - NOT A SINGLE DOCTOR EVEN MENTIONED I MIGHT HAVE BPPV ( BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO) and they did not test for it at all. They were all interested in treating my month-long migraine with anti-migraine drugs. They all swore up and down that my vertigo was related to my migraine. They also said my fogginess was because I was "tired and sick" and many migraine sufferers are that way.
After my husband and I searched the internet and found dozens of websites, we are pretty much convinced that I have BPPV. We are going to get in front of a vestibular specialist ASAP.
So you know, I have been through a CT scan, two different MRIs, basic blood work on my white cell counts, thyroid levels, potassium, etc.
They have ruled out a sinus infection, brain tumor, pituitary tumor, stroke, blood clots, etc. They have simply treated me with anti-migraine medication - and it has been worthless. I have taken Topomax, Frova and DHE (the drug mentioned above) and my migraine is still there. These drugs have not helped one bit. My neurologist swore that the DHE would do the trick. Guess what? He was wrong.
I discharged myself from the hospital yesterday and am now at home.
I just want my normal life back. I cannot drive, work, take care of my family, etc.
My two biggest questions are:
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF BPPV CAN CAUSE MY MIGRAINE? The reason I ask is that the doctors all think that the migraine is causing my vertigo. All along they have been treating my migraine (with zero success) and have been giving me valium and antivert to simply mask my vertigo (no success there either.) No one has tried to really diagnose and treat my vertigo. Is it possible if I get my vertigo fixed my migraines will disappear?
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL PILLLS CAUSING BPPV? I saw woman after woman on medications.com have the same symptoms of vertigo, migraines and brain fog while taking the birth control pill Yasmin. I also know that my avalanche of symptoms eerily coincided with my first pill from a new pack. If they are related, I am most interested in what to do to get my hormones back on track in an effort to stop my vertigo.
This is all driving me crazy. A month ago I was absolutely normal. Now I am 100% disabled. I just want my life back.
Please help!

brittkat,
i had the dizziness for quite a while when i was on yasmin, sometimes it would last for hours at a time for days on end,i thought i had an inner ear infection but it was ruled out by my doctor. i have been off yasmin for 3 months now and my symptoms have pretty much all subsided and improved dramatically. once your natural hormones get back into rhythm things should improve. i still get a bit dizzy and anxious when i am ovulating but even that is getting better and better with each cycle. i have no idea how long it will take to get back to "normal" but it is a good idea to take a good b complex,b6 and magnesium supplement to support your body while it is getting back into it's own rhythm. i am sure i am now suffering from estrogen dominance but not as severely as when i was taking yasmin, dizziness is a symptom of this condition along with many of the other symptoms suffered by a lot of women on yasmin. i am beginning to think that if you already have an underlying problem with low progesterone levels when you start on yasmin it will make it much much worse. it may be worth getting your medical provider to check your progesterone levels. (and your ears just in case you have an underlying ear problem that is causing the dizziness but i suspect it will not be the case.
i hope that is of some help to you, have faith in the knowledge that it will get better.

I was prescribed Levaquin at 500Mg, 10 days duration, for an acute inner ear infection. I am a 44 year old male with a history of heart problems including arythmia. I am experiencing dizzyness, headache, lethargy, and muscle soreness as well as sore ankles. On a very positive note, my ear infection has improved dramatically a few hours after taking the first dose. I have had a recurring problem with ear and sinus infections. Two years ago I took Levaquin intravenously for the same problem after three other antibiotics failed to work. One thing I find to be very disturbing is the reactions of some people who have posted here. Levaquin was developed to combat the newer virulent forms of antibiotic resistant super bugs (bacteria). These "bugs" gain their resistance to antibiotics because people do not finish taking their medication. The bactetria become exposed to the new antibiotics but are not completely erradicated and some modify and become resistant. The people who stop taking their medication without first going to see their doctors are the cause of all the new resistant superbugs. Smarten up people. I have to use Levaquin now because of people like you.

I had a UTI last week and was prescribed Levaquin - a two day dosage. I was sick to my stomach with cramps and nausea, and as the day progressed, I found myself reaching out to the walls, to chairs, to anything that would keep me upright. All day I felt as though the room were spinning and that any moment, I was going to fall off the world. Thinking perhaps I had an inner ear infection, I went ahead and took the second day's dose of Levaquin. Again the same symptoms, but I added hot flashes in the night and poor sleep. The pharmacist did not mention the side-effects, and I was stunned to find this site online when I went looking for answers to my questions about this drug.

I've been reading the responses to this medication, and I have to say I'm shocked. I've been experiencing most of the side effects on this site, and I thought I was starting to lose my mind.
I've always had panic and anxiety disorder, and I had developed an inner ear infection 4 months ago. This was also AFTER I quit smoking and started exercising and eating healthier. Well quitting smoking gave me horrible panic attacks that would last 3 or 4 hours at a time, and when I woke up that morning feeling dizzy I panicked because I had never experienced an inner ear infection.
I went to the hospital 3 days later because I was so dizzy and I was experiencing numbness in my face and left arm. I thought I was having either a stroke or heart attack, and it turned out my heart was just fine but my blood pressure was 195/105. They immediately put me on Lisinopril and Metoprolol to bring my BP down. They said I had high blood pressure brought about by obesity and panic disorder (no crap?).
I took the metoprolol for about a week before I started noticing my hands and feet go cold and my heart rate was dipping down into the 30's. Being someone who reads up on his medication, I knew what medication was causing what and I stopped taking it. My heart rate went back to normal and my body temperature went from 96 back to 98.6.
The only thing I was taking was Lisinopril 10mg which my doctor later increased to 20mg. After this I started feeling like I was constantly hanging upside down because my whole head felt so congested. I figured the ear infection was coming back again and didn't give it a second thought. Then the panic attacks started getting so bad, worse than I've ever had before. I was experiencing panic attacks 3 to 4 times a day (I still do, but I'm going to stop taking Lisinopril after today). The dizziness came back as more of a light-headed feeling, despite still having medium-high blood pressure. Since being on Lisinopril, my blood pressure stays in the 130/80 range, going as high as 145/90 during the day. What a help that was.
I also noticed my heart rate dip again. For 2 weeks my resting heart rate was around 51 and lower, though my blood pressure was still high. This is unusual for me, this past week my heart has been racing with a resting heart rate of around 106. I went from bradycardia to tachycardia in a matter of days. My hair has been falling out, my body temperature has been low, my heart rate is all over the place with Hell's own palpitations, I'm getting chest pains every now and then, my neck and head have been hurting, I've been coughing so hard I throw up, my stomach hurts, I have diarrhea and bad heart burn.
And on top of all of that, I'm so fatigued I can barely get out of bed half the time. And this is while eating VERY HEALTHY and walking 2 miles a day! ***? I thought maybe it was my thyroid (I'm scheduled to have blood tests for that next week), but now I'm quite convinced this "medicine" is the root of all my problems.
If I want low blood pressure, I will have to continue losing the weight, and eating less salt, because I will NEVER do this again.
