have to agree with Mrsbarrett's post right below mine...I have been a lurker on this board for the past couple of months and thank God for it or who knows how crazy i'd be right now!! Here is a list of my side effects and pertinent information:
DOI: October 2008
Side effects were gradual and most evident around the Christmas Holidays:
Dizziness
Weird eye/vision disturbance where i'd lose focus for a moment and then be okay.
Constant spotting of "old blood" nothing much but did require pantiliners 24/7
Anxiety
Hypertension (more than ever, like when I was pregnant, 150-170s/100)
Panic Attacks
Face Dryness
ZERO SEX DRIVE
No "natural" lubrication, but who cares when you have no drive, are spotting all the time, and it hurts to have sex
Vaginal Odor
Mood Swings
Depression
FATIGUE to the point of wanting to stay in bed despite having to care for my 7.5 year old.
Chest pains (kept thinking maybe I had heart trouble, had cardiac workup that came up PERFECT and bloodwork was perfect, Thyroid test was perfect)
Nausea (morning sickness type, would get slightly better in evening but not so much)
IBS symptoms (diarrhea)

DOR: January 23, 2009
2 days later heavy bleeding for a couple of days.....had somewhat of a "crash" the first week where I was still not better. By the 2nd week post removal I was still nauseated in the morning but improved in the late afternoon and got energy boost in late afternoon.By the 3rd week I was totally back to normal!!!!! (well what's normal for crazy me! hahahahha)

My husband came with me to the doc, and she had no problem with removal. I went back for a follow up this past Friday and she saw how normal I am and that I have lost several pounds as well. She realizes I am extremely sensitive to hormone changes but says i'm the only one that she has seen like that. (how many have problems that don't think it is the Mirena...that's what I want to know???)

Anyway, that's my story and i'm sticking to it!!! If anyone would like to chat or share please let me know. I will also add that I have a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (just not practicing since becoming a SAHM) and so I looked up tons of information to figure out what was wrong with me, I really am thankful to have found this site....medical mumbo jumbo is NOTHING when you have your body telling you something and all you fine ladies......Thanks again!

i had posted back a few weeks about my daughters situation on singulair well she has been off of the medication now for 3 and 1/2 weeks now and just starting last night she seemed to be a different child she has been on the med for about 14 months she is doing better in school not wanting to fight me on everything. now she is eating great which is scary when your child goes 3 weeks not eating due to being afraid.she was sent to mental health and the doctor said he had never heard of a reaction to singulair and she could go back on it we said it was not going to happen they said it was her being bull headed which we knew different.we were almost to the point where the doctor wanted to admit her to a physic unit . we had her off the med and within 1 week she started eating little by little we just about have her back to where she was.we video taped her having her fits and showed the dr. he just stated she is a handful. we let her see the tapes the other night she started to cry and asked what was wrong with her and we explained nothing baby it was the medicine that was making you do that and now everything is going to be ok .this is the 3rd time she has quit eating in 1 yr and we could not pin point it well now we think we know it was the medicine.they put her on zyrtec we only give it to her as needed not on a daily basis.

I can't even type fast enough to describe how astonished (and relieved) I was to run across NUMEROUS web sites with women describing the same symptoms as have been perplexing me the past few weeks. I had the marina iud inserted a little over a month ago and the past couple of weeks I"ve noticed such a dramatic change in myself, but couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. Depression, lethargy, extreme irritability, mood swings, cramping, back pain, swelling in my abdomen, abnormal and irregular bleeding, headaches, nausea, dizziness, lack of motivation, reduced interest in sex...these just top the list. I thought maybe I was pregnant again, but knowing that it wasn't possible when you haven't had sex because I've either been bleeding, in pain from cramping, irritable, or just couldn't get "excited". These are all things that I've never experienced before and I cannot place blame to post partum depression because I had 6 weeks post partum that I felt "normal"....energized, happy, motivated, patient...all the things that are "normal" to me. I wish I had done further research about iud placement before I decided to go with this form of birth control, but the pamphlet made it sound so dreamy and my doctor swore by the thing. Before this thing does any permanent damage to my body, or my relationships; I'm having it removed. Pregnancy is a better option for me at this point (at least without the iud I wouldn't be so frustrated with my children!) I couldn't imagine dealing with these symptoms for years. I've read of women even being driven to attempted suicide and being on the verge of divorce. NOT ME....I knew from the beginning I had a bad feeling about getting the iud....and I wish I had listened to my intuition!

I got my mine in February of last year after having my third child. For 3 months, it was fine. My periods did not get lighter (but I did not expect it to, no matter what BC I use, it does not). However, I found that I could not use a tampon for very long. SO, being the sport I figured that it would go away, so I switched to awful pads. Then at the end of the year, I noticed that I always felt like it is something down there and I look swollen. I searched around, but found nothing. To this day I feel like that when I stand for to long or sit for to long. I have also experienced ambivalence and laziness. My hair was shedding to the point I cut it off. My skin looks like I am 12. When I worked a job that required me to stand for 7 hours, I bleed like a stuck pig, and it was bright red. My feet swelled so bad I could not walk. Then recently, since I no longer work there, my periods have become brown and stinky. Until that little voice told me to look this thing up, I thought that I was crazy. Nevertheless, women's intuition is there for a reason. Get this; I don't even have sex because of the discharge.

Ladies,

God gave us all that "little voice inside" that we call a woman's intuition. LISTEN TO IT! Unfortunately, I did not when it came to choosing Mirena as my first and only choice of birth control since I was a young teen first experimenting with sex. Well now, I am a day away from my 31st birthday and have been married to my high-school sweetheart for ten-plus years. After two kids and a miscarriage of twins, I decided I just didn't want to go through pregnancy again. So, little ol' me decided to be hip and choose a form of birth control that allowed me to be free and not have to worry about the likes of condoms...or spermicide...or those wretched birth control pills. If only I knew back then what I know now, however.

I first got Mirena inserted the end of March 2007. Since then, my sex life with my husband suffered dramatically, because, first, I bled inconsistently (that is, I didn't know when my period was going to show up---every week, every two weeks, etc.); second, when my period did show up, it would last 8-11 days; and third, the wire attached to the device was painfully uncomfortable for my husband during sex to where we were limited to just a few positions, which made for a pretty mundane sex life.

From a health standpoint, like so many other posters, I suffered severe hair loss. It had gotten to the point where I literally had a receding hair line and had to wear very weird-looking bangs just to cover up my hair loss.

I stayed bloated and on edge from the anxiety I felt from feeling like the start of my period was just imminently hanging over my head, because it seemed as though I was always on it (because I did bleed more times times than not).

The weight gain was horrible. I always felt insatiably hungry and looked up one day and realized I was a size 16...and barely squeezing into my clothes. I went on a diet, which went fine. However, I ended up coming to a standstill even after increasing and intensifying my exercise and lowering my calorie intake even more than I had. NO ONE 'til the day I die will be able to convince me it wasn't Mirena's fault for causing the initial weight gain and later stagnating my progress to lose weight.

And, yes, there was a change in my personality. I went from a laid-back, independent, self-sufficient woman to one who was totally clingy, overbearing, and extremely jealous. But then, I turned into the worst person I had ever seen myself becoming: I then turned into a woman who just wanted to be by herself. And so, I was one phone call away from hiring a divorce attorney and leaving my husband and kids, because I just couldn't handle my every day life as it was. I did not know what was going on with me; I just knew I found myself having a total change of heart about everything in my life, even though my life was a pretty dang good one, according to all of my friends and family and even people on the street who would observe how well my husband treated me.

Enough was enough, and I finally had Mirena taken out Friday, July 11, 2008, at approximately 11:00 AM!

My life has totally changed.

No lies. No embellishments. No exaggerations. I lost three pounds by that Tuesday, July 15. So, my efforts to reach my weight loss goal don't seem so futile now. Furthermore, my husband and I are as happy together as we were back when we were in high school; and, I can't even imagine not having the kids and him in my life. Oh, and my hair.... I no longer have a receding hair line. It's still going through that annoying growing-out phase, but at least it exists again!!!

Looking back, particularly at some of these posts, something told me I was in for a nightmare come to life when my doctor was amazed at how I felt hardly any pain while he inserted Mirena. And even now how he and his nurse act totally shocked and surprised at all of the problems that I had while using Mirena just sickens me to the point of wanting to punch something. These medical professionals know. They get very nice perks for being in cahoots with these drug representatives and manufacturers by going along with making us, the patients, guinea pigs. Such low-life scum! I am hurt and totally pissed off by the whole thing. But still, I am thankful my life has returned to normal since having Mirena taken out.

Nevertheless, be warned! Mirena is a steep, pricey sentence on one's life. So, you'd better be prepared.

I've had my Mirena in for about 2.5 years. To start with all seemed fine. Now I experience very long periods of discharge - not pleasant - brown clotty stuff - that can go one for three weeks or so. Worst of all, I have over the past 6 months or so experienced increasingly bad edema in my legs and ankles - I have some beautiful skirt suits but have been in trousers all summer because my ankles look like old ladies'.

Having said which, I am nearly 50. But even though my ankles have never been my best feature, they certainly don't need any extra help. I am convinced it is connected to these extended 'periods'. My doctor said if my intuition is that the swollen ankles is connected to the coil/menstruation, I should have it removed. I'm looking forward to it.

Question for you all. I have been on levaquin for 6 days 750 mg. For the last 3 to 4 days my hands have been killing me and it is getting worse, my knees, and shoulders hurt now. After reading your remarks I am calling doc first thing in the morning. Please let me know if you have any advice for me.

I took levaquin 750mg as prescribed yesterday, after leaving my doctors office at 330pm ( june 18th). along with calrinex d (1tab) and a tsp of tussionex suppension syrup and 4 nose shots of astelin in increments of two over a 4 hr period of time. I was awake a majority of the night unable to sleep. But had some bouts of sleep. This morning (june 19th) I awoke at 930 am forced awake due to an appointment, and took 550 mgm of levaqin and the array of other drugs, around 12pm I noticed a headache and believed it was due to the exertion of coughing so much, my appetite is non-existent and around 6pm I felt flushed and sweaty, however this feeling subsided. I am now in hyper drive, I want to fall asleep but when I do my throat has the sensation of being choaked and then I have this odd gush or air emmited nasally which awakens me from the doze. My left corotid arrtey was tender and my heart is palpitating. While my sinus infection is almost gone I do not think I will be continuing this medication. There will be a call made to my physician at first reasonable light, I am sure I will be awake.

Reading these postings have brought me some comfort. At least I know it is not all in my head and that Mothers Intuition is still a strong powerful gift! My 4 and 6 year old were given Singulair. My 4 year old daughter came down with her first ever case of swollen glands. She could not eat any food and spent the next 2 months drinking from a straw. All tests came back negative, antibiotics didn't work, steriods didn't work and the ENT said I should remove her tonsils. After 2 months of being on all kinds of meds and her steriod treatment was done I decided to take her off Singulair. I just thought her body should be drug free for awhile! Within 2 days she was completely "healed". I will never give her Singulair again.

My son is 7 and I have just decided to stop his treatment of Singulair also. He has constant complaints of belly aches, grey stool, trouble sleeping and sudden tears. I just thought it was stress with school work, peers, etc. but I don't think so anymore. We seem to try to "understand" why our kids are having certain stress like symptoms but I think we need to look at our medicine cabinets first. They are small people on strong meds and I just don't think their systems can handle it. I think I am going to visit a nutritionist not pediatrician the next time I need help!

My 2 year old son was put on singulair to help with asthma and allergies. Within 2 weeks we noticed a change in him - he wasn't the happy boy he normally is. We wound up in the ER one weekend after he had 3 petit mal seizures. The ER doc diagnosed febrile seizures. I wasn't convinced. Our pediatrician didn't agree, either, and sent us to a neurologist (but he didn't think singulair was the cause). The neurologist also hadn't heard of seizures associated with the drug.

My poor boy had an EEG and was in doctors offices, hospitals at least once a week until the EEG results came back normal - scary for a 25 month old child. I stopped the medicine immediately after our ER visit - call it mother's intuition. He hasn't had a seizure since. Although the doctors aren't convinced singulair caused the seizures, I firmly believe it did.

I have a 10 year old son. When he was 2 the doctor put him on Zyrtec. I felt like it made him mean and very depressed. He had many outbursts and was not himself. I told the doctor and he looked at me like I was crazy. I took him off it and within about 3 days he was back to himself. When he was 6, the allergist wanted to put him on it again. I reminded him that I thought my son didn't tolerate it well and again he looked at me funny. We tried it for 4 weeks and my son was awful. He would sit in a ball on the couch and cry and cry for no reason. I got him off and again within 3-4 days he was back to himself. Since my experience I have had several CLOSE friends go through this similar experience. In fact my close friend just took her child off Zyrtec after me telling her our experience. Her son has been on it for 3 years. She has noticed a dramatic difference and after being off it for 5 days he said "Mommy for the first time I don't feel like bugs are crawling on my skin." If you have any intuition that your child is having any affect from Zyrtec you are right. Go with your gut and GET THEM OFF IT. There is other medicine out there!!!

I think maybe you all need to consider - The side affects you mention could be because you are a woman!! The following side affects that women search for and try to find answers for are all typical symptoms that I have had all my life as a woman. Whether on birth control, off birth control, pregnant or not. My life circumstance, relationship, age all make a difference. At any given time I could blame these symptoms on "birth control" but I don't think it is that simple.
-anxiety/mood swings/erratic behaviour
-headaches
-weight gain
-cramps, water retention, swelling etc.
Anyway, I suggest you all try to be reasonable and consider other possible causes of your symptoms? Exercise, eating right, relaxation, relationship building, all of these things can eleviate MOST of these symptoms. By the way, been on Aviane and switched to Yasmin, no difference, sex drive is actually increased, feel good not symptoms if anything , better now and had serious cystic acne and is now gone.

Started my 2.5 year old son on Omiceff 6 days ago for ear infection. Has been having very weird bowel movements, dark and clumpy and liquidy at the same time. Worst is his behavior extreme changes in personality, showing aggression and anxiety. Hitting, tantrums x10 ( not the typical terrible 2's kind) crying, irratable, and will not nap. Finally today all of a sudden he began screaming in pain saying his groin area hurt. He would not let me look let alone touch. After 30 minutes of inconsolable crying, I put balmex and he calmed down I hope it is nothing worse than a diaper rash. Called the DR advised me to finish the 10 days, did not respond to behavior concerns. Want to hear my prognosis: STOP TAKING OMNICEF. I will not continue to put my son and our family through this horrible ordeal. If his ear infection returns they can put him on Augmentin. Enough is Enough. Sometimes we have to listen to our own intuition Dr's only go my want the Pharm Co. has to say.

GUEST 37772
JOEY-

It would seem that you are right and very smart for listening to your body and to your intuition. What I can share with you is that for many, and in my case, my skin did look the most beautiful that it ever had-but in truth, and upon reflection, I always had compliments on my skin. I have mediterannean in my background so it runs on the oiler side in the t zone and I am therefore more prone to breakouts. However, the upside is less wrinkling/slower pace than women with dry skin.

What I will say is this, the horrible side effects of Yasmin that have been documented here, and on the UK site Flowerbabies/Sarah set up, is no case for taking Yasmin. It is so detrimental to our bodies and our health and as we all come to learn if we haven't already, there is no quality to life when your health is sacrificed.

Yeast infections are very COMMON with BIRTH CONTROL PILLS. Most everyone of them opens a woman up to experiencing these because of the change in hormones and the effect on bacteria and yeast levels in our bodies. It alreay exists, just in healthy levels. When there is over-growth however, it causes yeast infections-one woman here had THRUSH which is yeast in her mouth.

VAGINAL dryness is also a side effect of Yasmin. Please read the insert that came with the Yasmin pills. You can also google Yasmin side effects and read an electronic one online. Many women reported changes to their sexual libido while taking Yasmin.

There are a couple of birth control pills: Orthocept and Ortho-tricyclen Low that i had good results with. Ortho Novum 35 as well has been around a long time. However, after years of being on and off birth control/hormones, what I would say is that if you can find natural method of birth control/non-hormonal, you are far better off in the long run. If you google side effects of birth control pills, you will see LONG lists of side effects. There is so little really known about women's hormones and these synthetic forms do damage.

I did not suffer from vaginal dryness while taking Yasmin but I did:
1. Significantly lose vision in my right eye
2. Developed a heart murmur
3. Developed chest pain and pressure and heart palps and irregular beats
4. Clogged painful eardrums

All* of these were directly linked to Yasmin and are even documented as possible side effects in Yasmin insert.

So, with that, I'd encourage you to see the UK site if you haven't already and the host of women who have experienced terrible side effects while on Yasmin as well as coming off of it.

Listen to your wisdom. you'll be ahead of many of the rest of us before we came to decide to come off of Yasmin a little too late.

GUEST 37760
Your side effects-specifically those related to weight loss are experienced my many women. I lost 15 lbs on Yasmin-and I directly attribute it to the diuretic in Yasmin as I went off, gained 10 back immediately.

Diahrhea also common. See insert that accompanies Yasmin. Most to many side effects women experience as well as outline of the enormous risks are there.

I hope that you are off at this time and feeling better.

GUEST 37745
Yasmin can and often does give women nausea and dizziness. Longer term, loads of side effects that can be debilitating. If you haven't already seen many of the side effects here-I encourage you to read through as many as you can as well as on the UK site and at ask a patient.com.

While this may go away, there are so many risks and so many terrible side effects women have suffered and are suffering as a result of being on Yasmin and/or Yaz now (its recent sister to hit the market)-I'd encourage you to get off of it now and explore non-hormonal methods of birth control. its so not worth it. Some of us, many of us have suffered terribly.

GUEST 37679!
HOW DID THEY COME TO DISCOVER THIS? WHAT WERE YOUR SYMPTOMS? THIS IS THE MOST SERIOUS RESULT I'VE SEEN HERE BESIDES THE VERY FIRST ENTRY ON THIS SITE WHICH IS STROKE, AND ANOTHER WHOSE HUSBAND REPORTED HIS WIFE DIED OF A STROKE AFTER PARTICIPATING IN A YASMIN FORUM.

I hope that you have recovered??? How are you today? I hope you will post your experience on www.askapatient.com as well as to the UK site.

Did you have any prior high risk/risk factors?

Are you taking up legal action? A number of us have been wondering how to do so.

I do hope that you are healing. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

GUEST 37673
Your side effects, specifically those of vertigo/dizziness and fatigue also documented here as common side effects. also documented on Yasmin's insert for possible common side effects. Good, very good, that you have stopped taking it.

Also common-irregular heart beats, heart palpitations-risk to women and risk in general with this pill for hypertension/high blood pressure. I experienced this, 1.5 years into taking Yasmin. First heavy chest sensation, then developed a heart murmur, irregular beats and chest pain that continue to this day 5 months off of being on Yasmin. Several other women here and at the UK site Flowerbabies set up also experienced this-multiple trips to the ER, EKG, ECG and a slew of other tests.

If it feels like your lungs are burning, i hope you are off this now? Has this continued? Interestingly, since I got off of Yasmin, I have been sick every month for the last 5 months at the onset of menstruation. A Naturpath I've seen has advised that changes in hormones create inflammation in the body and make this possible-more susceptible to infection. I've had bronchitis for 5 months in a row, each time starts at the onset of menstruation.

Your complexion going to hell is not so common as most women experience the opposite. It is so good that you are listening to yourself-and getting off of Yasmin. Too many of us had side effects over time that we didn't add up/attribute to Yasmin until too late-or until we are already suffering today from longer term side effects.

I also noticed while on Yasmin, I would wake up in sweats and became even more sensitive to cold than I already was. Almost like flu like symptoms-that several women here also experienced.

Nausea-also very common and outlined as well in Yasmin's insert of possible side effects.

To hear that these symptoms are in no way bad compared to those you experienced on Ortho Evra is quite concerning as that path is now under lawsuit and many of us are only waiting until this occurs, or working to figure out how to sue Yasmin and Yaz.

Best of healing wishes to you and congratulations for taking the responsiblity for listening to your body, taking the initiative to research your side effects, and taking personal responsibility for your own health. We can't count on pharmaceutical industry, pedaling doctors who receive financial incentives for prescribing this stuff, treating us like guinea pigs, to learn to take care and education for our own bodies and health.

Seizure Disorder
Hello. We are desperate searching for answers. Our 3 yr. old boy was on Singulair for 11 months when we noticed he began having atonic seizures (his head would drop forward - loss of muscle tone). He was a perfectly healthy little boy. Our intuition as parents is that Singulair is responsible for this seizure disorder he has developed. He has been off the Singulair now for 1 month and a half. His seizures have not improved at all - we feel in our hearts that he has had some neurological damage done. He had an EEG done and it shows a generalized atonic seizure disorder. He was completely healthy before. What can you tell me about your child? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks so much.

After I was separated from my husband of 9 years, I decided to go off the pill. I immediately stopped getting migraines, no more bloating, no cramps!, no Headaches!!, slept deeper, lost 10lbs, was on Cloud 9, had the energy of a 19 yr old, dancing and had never felt better, but I had irreg. periods and went months without a cycle. Most would point this to being happy that Im not in an unfulfilling marriage anymore, and I'm not discounting that. But, 4 months after I met my Soul Mate, I went back on Yasmin (b/c the others gave me migraines). Little by little I gained weight, lost my waist again, sex drive is much lower, lower energy, breasts went back to 36C! but they're so tender now, migraines hit right before I start again, bloating, cramping so bad it wakes me in the middle of the night, I look tired all the time. It's taken my youth away from me once again. I think we women have greater intuition than western medicine has proof, and I believe it's time to go off the pill forever and try other barrier methods. Does anyone have any recommendations of things they've tried and worked well, and the didn't get pregnant using them? Thanks for reading and any comments you have :) - phoebegirl

Has anyone heard of agitation or crabbiness as a side effect? A nurse mentioned this in passing the other day and it rang true with us but we'd never suspected Singulair as the cause.
