I was diagnosed with my first case of bronchitis at 41 in August. I am female and was diagnosed with diverticulitis in July, for which I was given dual antibiotics for 10 days. I thought those side effects were bad, but I am beginning to believe PREDNISONE is worse!

I took a 12 day declining dose regimine, prescribed 3 days after I started a zpack for bronchitis that was worsening, not getting better. I had the rapid heartbeat at times, but really no effects.

My effects begin AFTER finishing the course of PREDNISONE a week ago. Two days ago, I broke out with tiny pimples all over my jawline. The next morning , they were covering my upper chest, neck, cheeks, temple and forehead. They are still there today and worse. They look horrible. I've never had acne in my life and I am supposed to be doing job interviews now. Looks like they'll have to wait. It's embarrassing. Makeup does not cover at all--it's almost like bad hives, there are so many I can't count. I have researched this and it's called steriod-induced acne and I suppose I'm going to have to go out and get some face wash with salicylic acid and some benzyl peroxide or something!

My second bothersome symptom, which started yesterday, is headache. I have never had headaches in my life. The pain started around 4pm when I would move my head, turn my head, look down or up or simply swallow. The pain was directly in the back of my head at the base of the skull. It migrated then behind my eyes and cheekbones. It lasted all night
and whenever I would sit up (not sleeping well either, awoke four times last night) or stand up--boom--there was the pain. Thankfully it lasted 12 hours and for about three hours now I've had really bad pain behind my eyes and cheeks. I took a couple advil just now. I am guessing these are the headaches Prednisone is famous for.

The third symptom has been sweating. Like crazy. Two days after finishing my dose, I would sit at kitchen table and just POUR sweat. Same thing this morning at breakfast. This seems to be a morning occurrence. Thank goodness I am job hunting now. I could not work with these symptoms.

My fourth symptom isn't so bothersome but is sensitivity to sunlight and blurry vision. I noticed the blurry vision once starting the Prednisone.

How long will these last? There are so many side effects you all have shared I wonder if anyone will even see this. I don't see acne, but a google search revealed a dermatologist causing acne after Prednisone the steroid-induced acne referenced above.

For reference, I will NEVER take Prednisone again. How easily I've forgotten the mood swings. The best part of Prednisone for me was it healed my bronchitis in about 10 days. The worst? The constant, epic dreams that lasted all night and involved constant problem-solving. I'm a lucid dreamer, but these weren't lucid. The themes were tied to daily life, something ridiculous I had heard on tv, and went on and on--almost psychotic. No nightmare quality--just very unpleasant and downright odd.

I will tell my doctor that under no circumstance will I take this drug again. I'm asking friends to recommend detox programs. I guess I should go to a steam room and exercise and sweat a lot, but the pain behind my eyes and my tiredness (oh yeah, forgot to mention that at 3pm each day I'm hit with terrible exhaustion) prevent me from doing that, or job hunting, or going to job interviews.

This better resolve this weekend. Being sick is no fun, but side effects from drugs shouldn't be worse. Apparently many people are sensitive to this drug!

Just want to survey everyone and ask for responses for the following 3 questions:

1. how long did you keep your Mirena and if you no longer have it, why did you have it removed?

2. how many of you had your thyroid checked? who's came back abnormal? what were the levels?

(I'm a medical student doing research on this one since I believe the levonorgestrel affects our thyroid hormone. My TSH was elevated to 5.2 which is considered "subclinical HYPOthyroidism". This was mid cycle when my natural progesterone AND synthetic progestin were cumulatively high. When I had it rechecked 6 weeks later (around my period when any natural progesterone level is gone) it was normalized at 1.5. So I think that the P+P screws up our thyroid and can throw us into a high TSH and "hypothyroid state". The opposite effect may be true during menstruation and we can become HYPERthyroid for a few days... hence the really bad anxiety?!)

3. where is everyone from? perhaps we can have support group meetings?

I was wondering.......it hurt like hell when it was inserted. For those of you that had it removed, "HOW BAD DOES THE REMOVAL HURT?" I am afraid to have it removed but know it is necessary.

I've called my doctor and am waiting on a reply from the nurse. I want my Mirena removed. I posted my symptoms on May 8th. I've had mine in for 4 1/2 months.

My symptoms are in order of severity:

*heavy bleeding 3 out of 4 weeks (pads or tampons with breakthrough bleeding and pantiliner 24/7)
*acne on my back, butt and jawline (going to Derm. and using ProActive)
*I've gained 15 lbs in the past 4 months and it won't come off
*headaches
*a sore spot in my spine (I was fearful I had cancer)
*facial hair
*bloating (I look 4 months pregnant 1/2 of the time)
*low libido
*irritable and moody more than usual
*sore breasts

I started taking Loestrin 24 Fe two weeks ago today. I first accredited the bad period symptoms to just that, bad period symptoms, but after reading this, I realize it was the pill. I was paranoid and stressed out and cried three times, and for someone who's generally laid back and cries maybe twice a year, this was a little concerning. But, I'm willing to stay optimistic and chalk it up as being the first week on the pill to blame and not evidence of anything that will continue.
Yesterday, I had light spotting, but I assumed it was resultant from some rough sex my partner and I had had. Today when I wiped, there was a significant amount of dark blood and I've got cramps like I'm on my period. It's only been two weeks since my last one! I'm kinda freaked out and plan to call my doctor tomorrow morning to find out what's going on, but I'm assuming it's just an effect of the extra hormones that's got me jacked up. It's a little weird, though, since it resembles blood spotting I get halfway to late in my period week rather than the first day, because it's so dark.
Aside from the spotting, I've had a day where I had a horrible headache, but it was no worse or better than severe allergy migraines I've had in the past (it's fun being a severe allergy sufferer *snort, reassert glasses*.) I broke out along my jawline when I first started, but it was only slightly worse than what I normally get during my period. I haven't been bloated, but I do find that I have the munchies more often, so I'm working to control that to avoid weight gain. I have been a little moody and somewhat paranoid lately, but I think it's a combination of family stresses, finals, and basic worries that come with being in a new relationship.
It was mentioned earlier that the last four pills have iron in them, and it is important that you talk to your doctor or do a little diet research to determine whether or not it's even necessary because taking too much iron can be bad for you. They are there because during and around their periods, women generally are iron deficient, but if you are getting plenty of iron in your diet (especially if you take vitamins) you really don't need this extra dosage. That is, after all, what the Fe in the name is for, by the way. ;)
So, aside from seemingly having started a whole new period two weeks after my last one and having some mild mood swings and a single day of headaches, it hasn't been so bad. I had worse symptoms after taking ortho tri cyclen for three months. No pill is ever going to be completely symptom-free, so we must all keep that in mind.
I'll post when I find out more about this strange spotting deal.

I got my Mirena in on 10/28/08. It was probably the most painful experience ever. I was in tears before they were done, once they got it in I fainted and woke up to someone taking my blood pressure. I had to wait about 30 minutes after they inserted it until I felt okay to stand. They told me I would bleed and cramp for about 3 months. The bleeding at first was heavy and constant. Now, I spot completely randomly...it does seem to be getting a little bit better but it's completely unpredictable. The cramps hurt so bad that I bought my own heating pad. Now I get cramping about twice a week...it's so bad that I have to lay in bed for hours. The summer prior to getting my mirena I noticed some weight gain. However, i am still gaining weight despite going to the gym and improving my diet. I also have bouts of acne, mostly around my jawline. I have been very fatigued as well. The past week or so it has been much more noticeable, around midday. Lower back pain has also been a side effect for me. I'm getting my mirena removed today in an hour, I will update when I return... I hope it doesn't hurt as much. I did however, love the sexual freedom that came along with mirena. I was awful at remembering my pill...hopefully I can find something else that will work as well without the side effects.

Placed on 10/30/08 and gained 10 lbs in 1st month, spotted on and off until 1/2009, and got acne along my jawline. In Feb the acne remained, but I was finally starting to like the spontaneity the IUD allowed. In mid-April I started passing clots and bleeding heavily. The string were outside of my body and I could feel the IUD coming out :-(. I am still bleeding 4 days later and might need a D&C. I am so bummed. Pregnancy test negative. To do over again, I would not get the IUD :-(

i have scheduled to have my Mirena removed because i need to know if i'm just aging really poorly at 24 or if it's the side effects of the Mirena.

i haven't even had Mirena in for a full year, but the last half of 2008, i gained 20 lbs, my face broke out in painful acne, i noticed my hair thinning at the top of my head, and my back was hurting an awful lot.

back pain and depression travel in my family. i'm not blaming those on Mirena just yet.

but i have been working out for months, and have not shed a single pound until going on an extreme diet and HCG therapy, where i have finally lost my first 10 pounds.

no acne medication is helping at all (i'm sitting here with a Proactiv mask on my face as i type).

i'd like to go back to the way i looked and felt a year ago, so i hope the Mirena is the culprit.

I had the Mirena coil fitted in Dec 06. For 12 months, I had horrid slutchy loss P.V but no actual periods. I had increase in spots, all along my jawline and hairline and cheeks....acne at 45!! Something I'd never had as a teenager. My weight has gained because I'm always, always hungry and seem to have lost my appetite control button. My breasts are constantly tender and feel enormous like just before a period or in early pregnancy. I am so, so tired. I find myself nodding off at 5pm even when I've had a really good previous nights' sleep. My energy is zilch. I feel tearful and run down despite eating well and taking vitamin supplements. Is it the Mirena? My doctor has said "No!". The only way to find out is have it removed, return to heavy periods and suck it and see! However, if I don't have it out, I fear I may reach 15 stone!! (went from 9st 9lbs to 11st 4lbs in 2 yrs).

I got the Mirena in August 2008 after having our second child. We thought it was a great idea b/c I wasn't ready for my husband to have a vasectomy in case we ever did change our mind about having more children. Although, we definitely have decided that we won't have anymore. Anyways, I have had spotting ever since and the three months of spotting is a joke because it has been way longer than that! The last two days I have had SEVERE lower back pain through the tops of my legs aching. Reminded me of having back labor it was so terrible. I couldn't sleep at night good because it was awful. I called my doc today and I am having it removed tomorrow. Can't wait!!!! I just wished I had read this website before I had decided on Mirena. And the comment I read about the hurt you experience having it inserted is the darn truth! If I had knew that I wouldn't have gotten it either. Besides that, my doc had to clamp my cervix while trying to insert it...so needless to say it was horrible!!!!!!!

My 17 year old son has been taking Lamictal for seizures for 2 1/2 years. He started out at 300 mg a day and was seizure free for a 1 1/2 years until November 2007. Since then his physician slowly increased his dosage to 500 mg a day. and he hasn't had another seizure . Unfortunately, Since the increase he has acne on his jawline and back. We are trying to find a way to get rid of the acne, but have been unsuccessful so far--decreasing his dosage is not an option as he has grand mal seizures. Also, he has these tiny red bumps all over his arms. His dermatologist say's they are a hair follicle problem, but I think it's quite a coincidence that they started when he began the Lamictal. If anyone has any suggestions, we would greatly appreciate them.

I have had Mirena for almost 5 years now. I got it inserted in 2005 after I had my son in March of that year. I was 20 when I gave birth to my son and got the mirena inserted. Let me state that I have great skin. I have only ever got a pimple here and pimple there which was usually associated with my period and would be gone within a week.

Now I have HORRIBLE acne. It covers my chin, jawline and all over my forehead onto my temples and on my scalp AND behind my ears! When I first had it put in, my weight was 175 because of my pregnancy, granted I started out at 106 and I am 5'6" when I got pregnant. I have always been a tiny woman, and now I average at 120. At first I lost a lot of weight after I had it inserted (My metabolism has always been super high!) and now I am starting to gain weight. 120 is not unhealthy for my height but I am worried about my weight increasing over time. I never ever thought that the Mirena could be the cause of my acne. I went to the doctor and instead of taking it out she gave me a speech and explanation of how smoking can be bad for your health. I have quit smoking since then but she did not help me with what I went to her for.

Instead she insisted so much that I keep it in that I got tired of arguing with her about it and left the place! I too felt pregnant and I have a horrible discharge and smell. At first the discharge and smell started only when I was about to start my period and while I was on it but now it is everyday and all the time! When I went to the doctor again, they told me that it must be a bacterial infection and then they tried to say I had some kind of STD and that turned out to be negative. I tried to explain to them that I never had any of these problems before I had it inserted! I didn't have heavy periods or any real reason to get it other than the fact that I had just had a baby and didn't want another one for a long time. I wouldn't say that I have been depressed but emotional would cover it accurately.

I get upset over stupid things and I am quick to snap at someone if they are upsetting me, which is NOT like me at all. I am a quiet and nice person. I rarely let anyone get me angry enough to react in a way that is rude or disrespectful but now I feel like crap all the time. I have an appointment for the 9th of Feb and I plan to have them remove it and find some kind of medication for my severe acne and fix my issues with my discharge. I hope that all of this will go away after I get it removed but I have heard of people who continue to have infections constantly, even after having it removed and all because they decided to get the Mirena.

Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm a 34 year old woman. I gave birth to my daughter in October 2005 and in December 2005 I had the Mirena coil inserted. It's due to finish up this December as it's approaching the 5 year mark.. In the last 6 months, my skin has gone from being clear as a frosty sky to that of an acne ridden 15 year old. I'm breaking out on both my cheeks, neck, jawline and chest. Could this be a side effect of the "winding down" hormones in my coil? I've had the coil in almost 5 years but I'm only getting really bad skin now...... for the past 6 month or so. I've always had relatively good skin so as you can imagine, this is most distressing for me. Could it be the "last of the hormones" in the coil? Could anyone shed light on this for me? I would have thought that if my skin was going to "break out" with the coil, it would have done so almost immediately after inserting the coil in in the first place..... Not almost 5 years later! I've no allergic reactions to creams, lotions, foods, etc. My diet is quite good (I've never changed my diet so it's not diet!), I'm not stressed. I get at least one new spot every day. They last for days, or a week. They are really deep rooted so most of them I can't even "pop"! Can anyone help? It's my birthday next week so it would be the perfect birthday present......

Regards and thank you in anticipation

Yvonne xx

I'm taking Wellbutrin and Lamictal (150 mg for both) for at least 5 months now, as a mood stabilizer. Like many people have said on here don't let these bad reviews scare you away from trying it, at the very worst you will take it and not like it so you can stop. But for me it was amazing how it stabilized my moods. I didn't expect it to be so noticeable. I had tried Topamax right before but it was terrible for me- it made me sooo out of it and I had a very hard time talking (finding the right words, pausing in sentences frequently) Lamictal didn't do that to me. I have started to get acne on my jawline like many others have posted, I didn't think it would be related but I've NEVER had acne on my jaw and cheeks they are really tiny bumps of acne, but a lot of them. The reason I started to look at this site for people's side effects was now I have terrible neck soreness and stiffness. I mean BAD. It's slowly working it's way to the middle of my neck as the day goes on and feels like it's going down the middle of my back as well. Very weird, I haven't exercised or done anything in the past 4 or 5 days that would have pulled a muscle, so make what you will out of it but I'm going to stop taking this drug. It's unfortunate because I really did like it and am worried how my moods will be after stopping it. But TRY IT, it has been at least 5 months of me being more stable so that alone is worth the clarity. Also, I'm a woman with usually heavy periods but didn't have that side effect with this drug and I lost weight didn't gain any with this one either, but I'm sure that had a lot to do with the Wellbutrin which is notorious for weight loss rather than weight gain. Also, if you start to feel good at a low dose as I did DON'T INCREASE IT! I hate hearing people say their doctor's wanted to get them to the "therapeutic dose" even when they felt good, your more likely to have neg. side effects if you go higher than you need. Everyone is different in how their body metabolizes the medicines. Do your research and hold your ground, make sure you have a doctor that will listen to you, that's key.

I have had the Mirena for 1 1/2 yrs now. Within the past six months I have started to develop acne, all the while my period was starting to fade less and less every month. Now, the acne is severe and the periods are completely gone. I'm just wondering if this is all related. I have scheduled a appointment with a skin clinic, and also called my gyno. I am waiting on a reply from the nurse at the gynos office to see if I need to go on to the skin clinic, or if I just need to get this removed. I have never had more then a pimple or two on my face at one time. Now, I have them completely covering my hair line, almost like a rash.

I posted last Friday night about my 4 year old daughter's Singulair experience. Just wanted to add a note that my daughter was actually on it for 16 days - forgot to include the free sample. Her last dose was last Friday. She had one more hallucination experience on Saturday evening. Sunday she developed an unexplainable itchy rash behind her ears and along her jawline. I gave her some Benadryl. Monday morning the rash is not as severe or itchy. This evening she is in very good spirits and ate quite well too.

I'm 24 and have been using the NuvaRing for 4 months now. I've been waking up to find myself drenched in sweat which I have never experienced before. I started looking at different web sites to see if that is a side effect (which I couldn't find anywhere) when I found this site and after reading everyone's comments, I realized how many side effects I am having. I have no sex drive at all, I am depressed and want to do nothing but sleep, and I find myself eating way more than I used to. If anyone else has been having night sweats, please let me know.
