Levaquin 500mg prescribed for bronchitis for 10 days. Doctor had to stop on day 7 because of migraine aura told to be low blood sugar. This was in December, 2006. After stopping there has been difficulty walking, with severe pain in legs. Also migraine auras return and are still present three months later. These symptoms were not present in December. This is a poison. Why this drug was given I do not know. There are plenty of other antibiotics which I have taken which did not cause symptoms once stopped.
There was one other that was horrible, Ketek, which has now been stopped because of liver problems.
Would not take Levaquin again.

Two years ago I had rotator cuff surgery and fell two days later on my face. I had to stitches and then asked if I had any allergies to drugs and I did not, so they prescribed Levaquin 500. I have never taken it before. After 2 doses, I had a terrible pain in my midsection and began turning yellow. After many many blood tests, it was clear that it was a form of hepatitis but all kinds were ruled out. It was later diagnosed as pharmaceutical drug induced hepatitis. What should have been a short time off from work turned into a great deal longer. I was hospitalized the first night when I came into the emergency room. I was sent home because they said there was nothing that would help other than rest and I could do that at home. I do not remember how long it took for my skin to go back to normal, but I had to go to a doctor in gastroenterology for weeks and having blood tests drawn to see how my numbers were. I wrote a letter to Johnson & Johnson but did not receive a response. I heard the story in regard to Ketek this a.m. on tv and I knew exactly what the guy was describing. If my numbers had not turned around it would have meant eventually being on a transplant list. I was one of the lucky ones and am thankful for that every day.

I am taking prednisone.05 for 10 days and gradually terminating the prescribed pills in 3 days. The same day I started taking KETEK I am on my 8th day now and have been spitting blood on and off since day 1 hoping that the infectious bacteria was being released this way. IS THIS A POSSIBILITY? Penny

I pity yet envy all of you! On the one hand, I feel so bad for all of you that have such horrible and long lasting side-effects. On the other hand, I'm jealous of most of you because you have other treatment options! I have severe chronic Lyme disease... I'm debilitated-- sick for 2 years and completely out of work for 10 months and going. About a year ago, after trying countless different antibiotic combinations for months, I finally found one that began to make me better-- levaquin, flagyl, and zithromax. It worked wonders, but I had to go off it after just 4 weeks because my gut couldn't contain the yeast build up. The levaquin side effects I had were shooting pains in my penis and sore and seemingly weak intercostal joints (I was constantly sore where my ribs meet my sternum). I know the side effects were from the Levaquin because I had been on zithromax and flagyl-- serperately and together-- without levaquin at different times and never had the side effects. Anyway, luckily, the pain in my penis went away shortly after I discontinued levaquin and, while the rib soreness went away after a few weeks, I still feel like my chest is going to collapse when pressure is put on it. Anyway, it's now a year later and nothing else is getting rid of my Lyme disease, which is so bad that I've decided to start taking Levaquin again along with flagyl and ketek (a new drug similar to but more effective than zithromax). If this combo is still effective for me, I will probably need to be on it for 16-24 weeks to totally kill my infection. I just hope that whatever side effects I get won't be permanent! I was lucky enough to get through four weeks of Levaquin without any real lasting damage (unlike so many of you who got so sick on just a few pills). 4 weeks and 24 weeks, however, may prove to be a completely different story. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Let me start by saying that I have a middle ear infection. First my primary care dr. gave me Ketek, which did not work at all. He sent me to an ENT sepcialist.
I was prescribed 500 mg. of Levaquin for an ear infection. Dr. told me to take it once a day for 7 days. There was some improvement, so I continued to take it for a few more days. The ENT dr. became concerned so he increased the dosage to 750 mg. i am now on round 3 of 750 mg Levaquin. I still have the ear infection. I have bloody drainage from my right ear and I am totally deaf in my right ear. The ENT dr. tells me that this is the best drug out there. This cannot possibly be true. I dont have all the nasty side effects described by others, but this drug is NOT working. I am concerned because I have read through these messages and don't see anyone else who has been give Levaquin for an ear infection.
