Kidney damage symptoms and conditions

I have been on Yaz for 3 years. I am now 39- I took it to help with Pre menstrual tension and moodiness, and mild acne. I have done nothing but shed like a DOG since I have been on it, I have no sex drive, I have gained 5 pounds, which is a lot since I am only 5ft.4 in. I just found out the real kicker... I have signs of kidney disease now, high creatinine levels, and can only link it to the use of YAZ. There is a class action law suit forming against Bayer Co., and anyone using this should check it out. They are talking about the possible RECALL of this medicine, and I would hate to think of any young girls out there ending up with kidney damage like me. Please be informed before you continue to take it.

I am a 60 year old male. I have a bad heart, type 2 diabetes, damage to my heart from a heart attack in 2006. i have a pacer/defibrillator in me.
now after reading all these post i am wondering. i have been taking this medicine since 1996 when then i was told i had my 2nd heart attack and i did not know i even had my first. This medication was given to me for either an alfa or bata blocker, was on 5mg.. now i am on 2 1/2 that i take at night. i take a total of 19 pills a day and 5 shots of insulin, i have bad teeth and now the rest of them have to come out and i have to have bone mass ground down just to get some false teeth. wow i am in great shape huh..lol
well since the little history on me, this is what i am going thru now. i wake up with this deep cough and it gets to a point were i am gagging, after i get the what i call the hair ball out i feel a little better, then i have to keep blowing my nose to get the mucus out of my nasal cavity, I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA DIE THIS MORNING WITH THIS and i did die 4 times in 3 days in 2006 when i had this last heart attack. I see my caro Dr. on the 11th of this month, and i am gonna ask to go off this crap. my bp is normally anywhere from 90/55 to 114/65. and before i was taking this medicine and my attacks in 96, my bp was normally 124 over 70. now i can understand that this medicine is suppose to help protect my kidneys, but the way i am dry heaving and coughing one day they are gonna with everything else in this body cavity come out thru my mouth.
i am horrified off all the ppl and post i have read about this little blue pill i take and it is not for keeping wood either, that floated down the river. I was taking Topamax for about 4 years for chronic/daily migraines. It helped tremendously after I had taken almost everything else with no success. Then I had an episode where I ended up with 5 kidney stones. They passed but my neurologist wanted me off the Topamax in case that was the cause of them. I went off and my headaches came back with a vengeance. I had them daily until I begged my primary care doctor to put me back on Topamax. I honestly would rather have stones than daily headaches. I am a mother to four and have a husband and a job. I can't live with daily migraines. After being back on it for about two weeks the headaches have disappeared. I take 200 mg twice a day. I do have memory loss and loss of words big time. It is VERY frustrating. I feel stupid. But I can live with that. I have tingling cheeks , lips and hands. I'm sensitive to sun and have to wear my sunglasses a lot more now. I now talk in my sleep- a little nervous about that :) I lost weight last time around but haven't yet this time. I am very happy, not sure if that is the RX or just me reacting to not having headaches. I guess you have to weight the side effects with the benefits. The choice is ultimately up to you. I had a UTI at the beginning of November. I had gone in for a physical and my bs were 127. My cholesterol was 276. 205 was bad. 46 was good. Triglycerides were only 135. I had another bs test and it was 130. My creatine (kidney function) was .7 which was good.

My doctor told me that since I technically have diabetes, they need to be aggressive with the cholesterol/blood pressure. I took Vytorin for about a week. I noticed tingling in my arms and legs immediately. My left arm was "heavy" and the left side of my body was numb for a bit. I also started using the restroom a lot. My knees also ached at night while sleeping and it woke me up. I had just started walking so I chalked it up to that. I had fatigue and anxiety as well.

I knew the pills were giving me these side affects so I took myself off of them after a week. I started myself on a diet. I walk 30 minutes a day. My cholesterol is now 237. The bad is 173, the good is 39 (I am working on raising that number naturally) and my triglycerides are 123. My fasting blood sugars are new only 95. My blood sugars do not go above 140 now, which is considered normal.

Unfortunately, my kidney function has taken a slight dip. It was .7 and now it is .9. I really feel that if I had taken the Vytorin much longer, it would of given me kidney failure. Apparently kidney damage is on the warning label of this product. If I had read the label before considering this drug, I would of never taken it in the first place. I am hoping the kidney function restores itself. Please scour the internet before taking any prescribed medications!

I just went to the doctor for an allergic rash on my feet and they took my BP. It was really high, but I was just laid off, got a new job and have been on it for two days. On top of that, I took a diet pill called Zip Fizz today just hours before going to the Dr. All of this with the job has happened in the last two weeks and on top of that, they had me train my replacement. The doctor prescribed Lisinopril, but after reading all of this, I will not take it. I already have asthma, a rash, kidney damage, gagging and do not want to get more symptoms. I believe my BP will go down as soon as the caffeine in the diet pill wears off. Thanks to all of you and this website for helping me make this decision.

I have been on Lisinopril for approx 5 years, during a routine year end blood work-up, I have developed a problems with my creatine levels 1.48 and Glom Filt Rate, Est 37. My physician had me do a 24 hr urine for further testing but insisted that I no longer take the Lisinopril. Several of the tests have come in and he advised me that I have only 50% blood flow to my kidneys. It appears to me that the Lisinopril has caused some kidney damage. I also have a great deal of muscle pain, but do to my age (55 years) I thought it was jus a part of the aging process. What do you think?

I am 25 and in shape (115 lbs) and have high bp adn kidney damage. I take toprol-xl and norvasc. I also just switched from Cozaar to Lisinopril 2 or 3 weeks ago because my insurance does not cover Cozaar anymore. Ever since I switched I've had lower than normal blood pressure, dizziness, feeling faint and then 10 days ago I started having diarrhea everyday. I thought it was a stomach virus but it doesn't seem to go away. At first I was up every 2 hours at night, then last night it was every hour for 9 hours. Does lisinopril cause diarrhea like this?

I have taken Lisinopril 20mg once daily for only 3 weeks and I am having some of the same side effects. Memory loss and forgetting things is the main one, the 'grit in the eyes' and general feeling of being tired all the time. I'm glad I found these posts. It did lower my BP from 160 over 108 to 144 over 94. I take it after lunch, since I didn't want to drive while it takes hold. Guess i'm lucky I don't have the other side effects.

Spoke with my Doctor today and he said those were unusual side effects. I guess not from what i'm seeing here. He told me to stop taking Lisinopril and gave me samples of Hyzaar 50/12.5. I really hate taking drugs, since I have atypical reactions to them, but i'll give it a try. I'll do the research first.

If you are taking this medicine, STOP! I took this medicine for about three months. I started to feel like I had a congestion. I cough lightly at first then into a hard cough which progressed into a hacking. My wife thought I was critically ill. I was spitting up clear congestion at work into my garbage can. This stuff is bad, I found this site and stopped taking the medicine. It took 3 week for the cough to subside. It’s been about 4 months, and I would say I am only about 98 percent back to where I started . About every 3 weeks I out of the blue start to slightly hack. I know one thing this is not a good medicine. When I started my BP was 138/109. My doctor told me to try this. Because of this medicine I could not do my job and my doctor never told me it was the medicine. When I told him he told me he didn’t think it was the medicine and prescribe some cold medicine

My doctor increased my Lipitor from 10 mg to 40 mg after my physical in January. My cholesterol was only 182 and my LDL was good. I am now being checked for rhabdomyolysis - a rare but serious complication from the muscle pain and weakness caused by the Lipitor. I never had these problems while taking 10 mg and I have no idea why he increased my dosage so much. I am miserable with neck, shoulder, and back pain and have been for a month. I thought I had hurt myself at the gym and have even been seeing a chiropractor for the pain. My urine is very dark, indicating possible kidney damage and I am so tired I can hardly make it through the day. My depression has worsened despite doubling the dose of my anti-depressant and I have no motivation to do anything. I am looking for an alternative to statin therapy, as I am a 38yo insulin-dependant diabetic and am at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Any suggestions out there on alternatives?

I am a 50 year old female and started taking 10 mg of Lisinopril about 2 months ago for HBP. I also take Lovastatin with no problems for about 2 years. Within a few weeks, I starting having the dry, hacking cough along with the tickle in the throat. I also starting itching over various parts of my body. I starting urinating a lot especially at night. Between the coughing and going to the bathroom, I was not getting much sleep. I was tired all the time and was not able to concentrate very well. A few weeks ago, I noticed my skin was getting little red spots. It finally dawned on me that all these symptoms occurred after I started taking the Lisinopril! I went online and found this site. I can't believe they would put a drug like this on the market! I quit taking the medicine about 4 days ago and my cough is starting to decrease, my itching is almost gone and I am not urinating as much. I have an appointment with my doctor in a few days and will tell him that I will NOT be taking this medicine anymore. I will find another way to decrease my blood pressure without medicine. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS DRUG!!!!!

I’m a 47 Year old male Diabetic. I was prescribed Lisinopril about a month ago by my doctor, as a protection against kidney damage. I have a some experience with drugs, as I have a degree in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry. I must stress that I knew nothing about the side effects of this drug before taking it,( I didn’t even read the instructions – that will teach me!) so for those who suggest that the problems are ‘imagined’ from reading the literature, in my case its just not true. I was given a 10mg daily dose, within the first day I started coughing, and suffering flu-like symptoms. As I had been given a flu-shot at the same time I just put this down to the injection. For the next few days I was feeling nauseous , achy and the cough was getting worse. I was finding it difficult to sleep, and found myself falling asleep all the time. After 4 or five days I started to have breathing problems, I was short of breath all the time, I found it difficult to climb stairs, and was waking in the night gasping for breath. I was also starting to find it difficult to concentrate. After about two weeks I returned to my GP, and advised him of the symptoms. He checked my chest, but could find no problem. He thought it was probably due to the flu jab, and would clear up in a few days. However I was starting to feel much worse. I was becoming distressed and irrational, my body was constantly aching, the cough was getting worse, I had no energy, and was becoming seriously depressed. I was suffering from blurred vision and stomach cramps, and eventually was escorted from work by my boss, as I was on the verge of a breakdown. All this time I was blaming it on the flu-shot, as Lisinopril is so commonly prescribed I couldn’t imagine that this was the cause. By chance a friend mentioned that he had had problems when he started taking it, So then I checked out the leaflet and the internet. There it was, all my symptoms – I was not going mad! I returned to My GP last week, A locum was standing in, who recognised the symptoms and told me to stop taking it. She commented ‘Your not the first I’ve seen with these problems’. I’ve been off for 3 days now and I feel a million times better.

I am a 19-year-old female pre-med student who has been taking this nasty drug for exacly 1 year now.... The amount I am on continues to change, for my disease keeps returning and leaving remission. I finally get down to 10mg from 40mg, and have to go back up when symptoms return!!! This is SO discouraging. The worst part is, no one understands the physical and emotional agony this drug brings on. I'm 19 and feel like I'm 90. My body aches, my weight is constantly fluctuating, I bruise from simply being poked (being a clumsy person, I look like I am beat!!), my bones feel as if they are about to break, and I am SEVERELY despressed. Being in college and taking rigorous classes, this is just too much for me to handle anymore... My 5-year relationship with the love of my life/best friend is falling apart because of my horrible mood swings.. don't blame him for leaving. I feel as if this drug has ruined my life more than the disease itself...Does ANYONE know if one's body and mind returns to "normal" after FINALLY being off this drug??? I pray to God the answer is yes... I would appreciate someone's reply and/or insight, because my Dr. fails to tell me about ANY side effects until I mention something. PLEASE REPLY!!!

I've been taking Ace inhibitors for several years. Started with captopril, another whose name I don't remember caused marked depression (the others did not), and finally lisinopril. All caused the cough, which went away after taking it for a few months, and starts up again if I stop taking for a while and then resume. Other symptoms I attribute to ace inhibitors in general are a lack of libido, headaches, dizziness, and dramatic, but gradual, hair loss. (I am female.) At one point either the ordering dr or the pharmacy inadvertently doubled my dose from 10 to 20 mg(and I didn't catch the error for quite some time - weeks or months.) When I finally did catch the error, it explained my increased cough, headaches and dizziness, and severe postural hypotension. (I'm up and down a lot at work, and I felt I would almost black out when changing position.) I'm diabetic, and take it to prevent kidney damage. My blood pressure is borderline, and sometimes higher. Unfortunately, the ace inhibitor at 10 mg doesn't seem to lower my blood pressure enough.

I was taking Lisinopirl for one month almost to the day and then one day I woke-up with huge hives all over my legs and starting to go to the rest of my body. I went to the doctor that day and was told I was having an allergic reaction to the drug. That same day they did a blood draw and put me on a new medication called Verapamil. I have now been taking the new meds for one week and today I received a call from the doctors office and they are making me come into the hospital for "stat" blood draw, because my kidney functions were not good. I truly believe this is due to taking the lisinopril. I also had other side-effects in the muscles of my legs and was also very fatigue. I'll let you know what the results are. Sounds like I got some kidney damage from taking this drug! If your currently taking this drug, I would highly recommend getting off of it immediatally!

Been going to doctors for extreme muscle weakness and pain, but no diagnosis was made. Some days I can barely function. Two weeks ago I was so weak I could not get out of bed (very abnormal for me) and when I tried to call the doctor, I began to vomit violently and they called an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. Tests there did not show anything significant, so I was sent home with antibiotics for a "slight bladder infection". I hurt worse than with the worst kind of flu, but no sign of fever. Off and on during the past weeks the pain gets so bad I can barely function. I decided to investigate side affects to various meds I am taking and have now found all these warnings for Lipitor, which I have been taking for about a year. The blood tests were all fine, but I suppose those are to determine kidney damage. Can I stop taking this immediately?!?? I cannot bear these symptoms another day......

I have kidney damage from taking ibuprofen and other NSAIDs for over 40 years for a bad back and arthritis. Never had any warning until a bad blood test reading for creatinine. I wonder whether taking Triamterene (Maxide generic) will cause any further damage to the kidneys. Also taking Diovan and checked internet on that drug and advises not to take if you have mild to moderate kidney damage. Any effect on kidneys by diuretics?

Though I have posted this information a couple of dozen times on this site I am posting it again for the benefit of the new victims. Fluoroquinolones, to which levaquin is but one such drug, has been associated with IRREVERSIBLE PERIPHERIAL NUEROPATHY, SPONTANEOUS TENDON RUPTURES, HEART ATTACKS, STROKES, Liver and Kidney damage, vision and hearing damage and about 14 pages worth of serious and non abating adverse reactions. If you are experiencing unusual symptoms while on this drug chances are very good that you are having one of these reactions. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Twenty-nine patients who took AstraZeneca Plc's cholesterol drug Crestor have developed kidney damage, a U.S. consumer group said on Friday as it called again for a ban on the medicine.

The rate of reported kidney problems is about 75 times higher with Crestor than with all other drugs in the same cl-------- combined, consumer group Public Citizen said. According to its analysis, there have been 6.4 reports of acute kidney failure or kidney damage for every 1 million Crestor prescriptions filled.

"It becomes clearer by the day that this drug is uniquely toxic without offering any unique benefit, and that it must be removed from the market," Dr. Sidney Wolfe, head of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, wrote in a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites).

AstraZeneca insists Crestor, known generically as rosuvastatin, is as safe as other drugs in the family known as statins. The FDA (news - web sites) has agreed but promised to closely monitor reports of safety problems.

"Our data shows, with regard to that particular adverse event, it remains in line with other statins," company spokeswoman Emily Denney said. She added that AstraZeneca updates Crestor's reported health problems every week on its Web site www.rosuvastatininformation.com.

According to the site, "serious" kidney problems are "very rare" and occur at a rate of less than 1 in 10,000. Of all statin-related kidney problems reported to the FDA, 3.5 percent were related to Crestor as of early October, the site said.

Writing in this week's edition of The Lancet medical journal, AstraZeneca said Crestor's "safety profile is similar to those of the marketed statins. This view of the benefit-risk profile ... is shared by regulatory authorities in the 64 countries where rosuvastatin is approved."

The company's letter was written in response to earlier criticism from Wolfe.

Public Citizen said its latest analysis was based on reports to the FDA since Crestor's approval in September 2003 through Aug. 26, 2004. The reports of "adverse events" from doctors, patients, manufacturers and others do not prove if a drug caused a particular problem, but the FDA uses them to look for signals of possible drug-induced hazards.

Millions of people worldwide take statins, such as Pfizer Inc.'s Lipitor (news - web sites) and Merck & Co Inc.'s Zocor, to lower their cholesterol. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease.

Bayer AG's statin Baycol was pulled from the market in 2001 after it was linked to more than 100 deaths, many of them from a severe muscle-damaging condition called rhabdomyolysis.

The FDA has received 65 reports of rhabdomyolysis in Crestor patients, which is similar to the rate --------ociated with Baycol, Public Citizen said. AstraZeneca says the problem, also linked to other statins, is rare with Crestor.

After taking 200 mg a day for 5 months I developed hives on my stomach and love handles. The itching is driving me nuts. Anyone else have this and could it be kidney damage at this low dose?

I was taking 1mg.of Xanax 3x a day for 3yrs., I quit cold turkey at a Dr. advice (very stupid Dr.). After 2 days of hell I had 2 siezures in a 30 minute time span. The second almost killed me, I had 4 broken ribs and minor kidney damage. For 2 weeks my speech was slured and my mind was somewhere else.

My doctor has prescribed Lisinopril 10 mg daily to prevent kidney damage due to diabetes. I'm wondering if anyone else has been prescribed this med for this type of treatment. (My BP is within normal range, although at the high end of normal.) I am concerned about side effects, particularly exhaustion as this seemed to affect me right after I started taking it.
