I went to the clinic with a severe urinary tract infection. I was prescribed 500 mg Levaquin for 5 days and started taking it immediately (if you've ever had a UTI, you will understand!) I woke up on the 3rd day and could not move my fingers - my entire hand ached and was so stiff. It began to progress down to my elbows. I recieved a call later that day from the clinic saying they had prescribed me the wrong drug...a culture proved a different bacteria to be the culprit. Apparently the Levaquin was fighting nothing in my body besides my hand! I thought the pain was from the UTI going untreated for so long, but now I can see it was obviously the Levaquin. I still feel stiffness in my hands every morning, but it goes away and I am able to function. But I find it incredible that taking a prescribed medicine can affect me daily...and this was around 3 months ago that I took it!

My 7 year old daughter just started singulair 3 nights ago. She took her first dose on wednesday night and thursday morning she started with bad stomach pains. later that day she went to the bathroom ( #2 ) alot and cried in pain when she went. We thought it was a stomach virus but after reading all of this I think it might be the singulair. That is the only symptom. Stomach pain and pain when going #2. Has any one else gone through this also??? I just gave her a pill a hour ago and decided to get on the internet to see if it might be the singulair. Now I feel bad for giving her that last dose. Does anyone know how long it takes to go through the system and how long till her pain goes away???

Oh my God! The itching is horrible! I woke up and my eyes crossed from the severity. I could not even go to work. After taking Sufameth/trimethoprim for 2 days (2 pills/da) for a UTI, my scalp started to itch. I scratched all day with a pencil...to no avail. Later that day, the vaginal and rectal itch was unmerciful. Vagisil maximum COULD NOT TOUCH it. I scheduled a gyne appointment because I thought, maybe I was developing something else...yeast infection. But there were no other signs. My husband suggested it could be an allergic reaction to the medicine. My nurse suggested I take an antihistimine like Benadryl. That provided some relief. Now I see similar postings on the web about severe itching. Thank goodness I only have one more pill of this 3 day treatment.

Over one year now and my 55 year old body is still devastated.

I have posted here before. I was given Levaquin in capsule form ( 2 capsules) first night in ER for beginning bronchitis and flu and fainting from low electrolyte imbalance and smashing my nose and face full weight and knocking myself out with bleeding for a week.

I was sent home after 3 hours against my frantic ojections and fainted again within 5 minutes into the ride home.
ER doc said it was a vagal response. They put me in a recovery room and next day gave me more levaquin ( called "the Big Gun" antibiotic amongst doctors and nurses when it first came out ).
They discharged me later that day and gave me 5 more days worth of this stuff. First night home my body "exploded" in symptoms so horrible and unprecedented...nothing like the flu. Nightmares, paranoia, shoulders burning ( got torn roator cuff ) arms burning, down to hands then hands would get numb and ice cold. Stomach going crazy with noise and weird wincing pains. Bladder all weird, cold like never before then hot. Itching arm and elbows and scalp. Other crazy terifying symptoms too like popping in ears and joints.

Next morning tried to eat piece of toast and my body went into shock. Raced back up to ER in ambulance. Told them I felt like I was dying. Did basic tests, never found anything. Did this several times that week. I was crying it was so terrifying and suffering. And I was 54 years old! I kept telling the ER staffs I was taking this "Levaquin" They never once told me to stop so I didn't and I never got any warning pamphletts when they gave this to me nor did any doctor tell me what to look out for in reactions. And you get different docs every time you go to these ER's anyway.

Couldn't eat for months. Lost 35 lbs. So weak and shaky and feeling paranoid and like I was going to die for months...still do feel this way half the time.

Went to ER's 15 times last year. Heart pulse rate down in 30's for months. Passed out in hospital, had 3 and 1/2 "pause" one night with heart. Still having complete body breakdowns to this day one year and one month later. Wake up so sick. Have fractured vertebrae, leg pain and weakness ankles and knees especially. Shoulders and arms hurt and so weak. Prickly nerve haywire feeling inside and out. Feel so sick and weak just like one year ago. Anxiety is out of this world...depression too. Take Lorazepam but fight this as long term use does other bad things to you.

Today is another nightmare day. Moaning in total body haywireness, weakness, nasea and sadness about reaching the end of the line with doctors who say there is no more they can do for me. THAT is about the worst hope crushing thing now. No place to go. Everybody's done what they can. Nobody will send me to one of those Univeristy hospitals. If I was rich, I would say, take me and keep me here until you find out what has happened to me here.

But on the contrary, financially ruined now. 70,000 in debt. And can't declare bankruptcy now with new Bush passed legislation that makes this so hard it just isn't worth killing myself with courtroom stress and tons and tons of paper work and attorney fees.

Still no better one year later and more symptoms than I have mentioned. Just picked up bronchial asthma, sinusitis, and scarring in left lung...all new in last six months. Get rashes on legs and scrotum. Popping in ears and joints. Shakey, tremors...pain in intestinal areas all the time. B-12 reading is 175. Testosterone level so low now must rub gel on back to try to raise this. List goes on and on.

Called manufacturer of Levaquin, Ortho-McNeil and a product complaint lady heard my story and told me that Emergency Room should have never given me this antibiotic when they knew my electrolyte levels were low. Is she inferring that this "Big Gun" antibiotic is so powerful that someone with a low electrolyte balance could be damaged by it? Guess so.

But, no attorney will even stay on the phone with me for 5 minutes about my case. They bluntly say ( I'm serious) that if I had died or my liver had failed...they would take my case. Anything else isn't good enough for them to risk their time and money especially since G.W.Bush has capped medical malpractice awards to $250,000. And I guess you do have to be dead to win one of these cases. Great working man and woman respecting and protecting country we have here.

I was given Meprozine to take after getting my wisdom teeth taken out. I have a history of epilepsy, but have been seizure free for 12 years. In fact, I had an EEG last year and it came back completely normal. Well, a day after starting Meprozine, I felt very strange. I began to feel that sensation I would right before I would have a seizure. Sure enough, later that day, I did have a seizure. Luckily I was home and my husband was there with me. I'm kinda ticked off that knowing my history, this was the drug that was prescribed to me!

I started yasmin a year ago, thought it was good, but i have felt so depressed and down and anxious, thought it was just me going mad, but i have always been such an upbeat person, lately i have had dizzy spells, this morning i thought i was going to pass out so i had to lay on the floor for ages, which scared my 3 and 4 year old boys, later that day i went to the pharmacy as i felt much better apart from a tigh feeling in my chest the pharmacist checked my blood pressure ( i couldn't get into my doctor as she was ill) anyway the pharmacist said my blood pressure was high, which i have never had before not even during pregnancy, he said i need to see a doctor, i stumbled on this site accidentally and i know i am going to go off yasmin for sure now, I am a healthy 32 year old who isn't overweigth i eat a good diet and have never been unhealthy so i can only think this is the only medicine i take, and i have never felt so crappy, thank you all for making me realise i am not going nuts

Imitrex will stop my migraines in a short amount of time. It is a godsend. Stops the pain and also stops the nausea.

I do, however, have aftereffects: usually back pain later that day. Also, grogginess and fatigue. It is still worth taking Imitrex, though.
For me, it is best to take it as early as I realize the headache is a migraine, instead of waiting too long til the headache is going strong; harder to stop the pain once it has reached that point.

Im a 39 year old male in good health, diagonosed 2 days ago with Epydidimitus of my right testicle, possibly bacterial. My GP prescribed a 4 day dosage of Levaquin after giving me 3 sample 500mg tablets, told me to keep out of the sun and to call him if there were any reactions like a rash/sunburn. When I enquired as to whether I could continue my daily 2 mile bike rides, he suggested I not and I concluded it was due to the Epydidimitus. There was no insert in the sample packs, I filled the prescripton and would pick it up later that day.
However, at work I proceeded to do an Google search on Levaquin at Ortho-McNeil and was alarmed at what I read. I found this site and concluded that I didn't want to take fluroquionones for my illness and now understood why bike riding wasn't a good idea (possibility of Tendon Ruptures!!!).
I called my GP's office, spoke with the nurse and requested an alternate antibiotic. I was told the GP would be get back to me. The next morning his nurse called and instructed me to either take the Levaquin or see the in-plan urologist. An co-worker told me he'd requested not to receive Levaquin for a UTI, as it gave him leg cramps after he'd stopped taking it. I called a drug-rep friend of mine, inquired about Levaquin, was told it was being given out "like candy", most widely prescribed AB, safe, he's taken it, etc. But he'd also seen side effects and was surprised my GP wouldn't prescribe an alternative. He put me in touch with a PA at my urologists office, who called me back within an hour. The PA agreed that it was reasonable to prescribe something less powerful, as fluoroquinones are usually 2nd or 3rd line drugs. He agreed to see me the same day. I then called my GP's office to request that he get on the phone for 5 minutes at his convenience to discuss an alternative drug, but only received a call back from the head nurse who would relay the message!?? The PA did an exam, explained that quionones are often prescribed at his office after a patient hasn't responed to other antibiotics prescribed by a GP. His prognosis was the same as my GP, however he also suggested I get an ultrasound in addition, just to be sure.
End result, I was prescribed Doxycycline 100mg/2xDay for 14 days and will follow up in 3 weeks.

DON'T GIVE IN WITHOUT A FIGHT! If these drugs are unsafe, and there is even a 1% chance of major complications (Levaquin 46% of all patients reported adverse effects of some sort), why take them unless absolutely necessary! This is a family of drugs, that while being very powerful, was originally approved as a 2nd or 3rd line of defence, when other AB's didn't work. GP's may be prescribing them as wide-spectrum cure-alls without knowing the frequency of adverse side-effects. They already work 10+ hour days, why would they hop online to investigate negative effects reported to non-profit watchdog sites? We're not doctors, so what do we know...right? WRONG! Do your homework, ask questions, be considerate but firm. You have the right to ask for alternative treatments so long as you are informed. God Bless, best wishes.
