Depression! Wow. I'm the world's most upbeat person but I've been slipping down the emotional slope for the past three months; wondered if it was the Niaspan I started taking at the same time. The Niaspan web site doesn't list it as a side effect, though, so I thank you all for putting your comments on this web site. I've been ready to do anything (even drastic action) to deaden the emotional pain.

I'm a scientist and will now eliminate the medication to see if I begin to feel better. I'd rather feel good than lower my bad cholesterol. What would be the point?

I am a 65 year old female taking 20mlg of lipitor for almost 10 years. All of a sudden I started having severe pain, shaking and weakness in the calf muscle. The pain is unbearable. Doctors after doctors including a cardiologist, rhoumatologist and internist don't know the reason. I have stopped lipitor for 3 days. I cry and pray to god to help me everyday. I cannot exercise which is my passion for many years. I am hoping the lipitor is the reason and not something else. I have to wait and see. But I suspect it is.
SR
I do have nausea, depression and low back pain and arthritis and frequent headaches.

started 10 mg in 1998. was controlling everything ok. In 2004 developed weakness in both legs, started slurring words and eye trouble, went to several doctors then in April 2005 had to quit work as I was just to weak. That was at age 54. Finally a neurologist diagnosed me with Myasthenia gravis, and lambert eatons myasthenic syndrome. Had my thymus gland removed, which is supposed to put disease in remission, also had small cell lung cancer surgery at same time. improvement did not come and the drugs for myasthenia only made me sick. started having chest pains and doctors ,.found several blockages in my heart ,still do as to weak for surgery, cardiologist took me off of lipitor and I seem to have stabilized, still have trouble with short term memory, and vision, and really weak

I've been on Lipitor for 1 year and have all the side affects that you all are describing.
I've also developed an inflamed liver.
Any one else?
if I get more response, I'm seriously considering a lawsuit against the pharmacy company.

I must let you know from experience with both drugs scientifically, Lipitor does lower your cholesterol levels, and when u want to talk cholesterol, talk, LDL's or HDL's donttalk general. Lipitor has been proven to reduce your LDL levels yes, but the standard dose regimen for Lipitor is 40 mg, NOT 10mg, further more once Lipitor does that at 40 mg, it ALSO STARTS LOWERING YOUR HDL's which are your good cholesterol. So dont be fooled that your cholesterol levels have dropped. Consider the patients out there who suffer from GENETIC/ FAMILIAL DYSLIPIDEMIA's . The game is totally different for GENETICALLY OBESE PAX as well.

I think all of you folks with side affects are are blaming your ills on Lipitor rather than putting the blame where it belongs: on your own mental health. I am a 65 YO male and I have been on Lipitor for more than six years now. I have no side affects, I work out four days per week with cardio and weights and feel that Lipitor should be added to the public water supply. My total cholesterol has gone from the high two hundreds to under one-forty on a single daily dose of 10mg. All of you hypochondriacs get a grip.

consider the following if one is experiencing any symptoms of parkinson's--tremor, shuffling walk, lack of arm swinging on one side while walking, rigidity...and taking a statin:
Ivanhoe Newswire) -- The results of a recent study has scientists concerned
about a possible link between statins -- the cholesterol-lowering class of drugs
-- and Parkinson's disease.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discovered
people with low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) -- "bad" cholesterol --
are more likely to have Parkinson's disease than people who have higher levels
of LDL.

UNC researcher Xuemei Huang, M.D., Ph.D., reports the link raises questions
about whether cholesterol-lowering drugs, like statins, could increase a
person's risk of developing Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Huang and colleagues are now planning a study to further investigate this
possibility and other reasons for the unexplained link. In a UNC press release,
she reports she would not recommend people change eating habits or stop taking
prescribed medications because of the preliminary results of her small study.
She cautions previous studies have linked smoking tobacco to a reduced risk of
Parkinson's, but health providers would never suggest smoking.

Parkinson's patients are more likely to carry the gene APOE-2, which is linked
to lower LDL levels, reports Dr. Huang. This is another area she will explore in
her upcoming study.

I took Zocor for 60 days and stopped because of pain in both my shoulders, not being totally sure this was the cause but being normally very free of such pains. It took about 3 months for the pain to subside, following stopping the Zocor. One year later I resumed statin therapy and took Pravachol for 60 days. My shoulder pain returned and I developed knee and ankle pain also. I therefore stopped the statins and I still have some shoulder pain after 7 months - the other pains have lessened.

I know that people will post here mostly when they have problems, but from similar experiences of at least five of my friends who have been on these drugs, I am beginning to think that it is a silent minority who are, in general, not posting here!

I note that statins are prescribed universally for high LDL (cholesterol) and also for the majority of diabetics, regardless of LDL levels. Seeing the cost of these pills at about $3 each, there is a huge vested interest in maintaining the position that muscular and joint problems are only occurring in a tiny minority of those being treated.
