I have been using Aviane for the past two years. I used to use Yasmin but hated it since it gave me small spider veins around my legs. I honestly like Aviane a lot more. It's cheaper, I haven't gained weight, and my periods only last for maximum of 3 days. there is a very very light flow and no cramps at all. My period used to last 5 days with a very VERY heavy flow plus I used to get cramps. the only thing that bothers me about Aviane is that i feel dryer during sex and it's harder for me to have an orgasm. i definitely noticed the decreased sexual drive and my breasts always feel tender and swollen.

Mirena has helped my sex drive, I know women are different, but I seem to just get turned on for no apparent reason since about 2 weeks into the Mirena. My cramping is different than without the Mirena but definitely manageable. My periods lasted 10 days before the Mirena, with the first 5 days being extremely heavy and after having 1 period with the Mirena, I've noticed positive changes. My period was still 10 days but it was much more even, and I only used Light flow tampons the WHOLE period.
My breasts were barely an A cup before Mirena, and i had significant swelling and tenderness before my period, and after my period the swelling went down almost all the way and the tenderness was gone, but I've got a definite A cup now, plus this month's swelling is closer to a B cup. I'm hoping each month's swelling will bring me back to my before having children B cup.
I'm doing great with the Mirena. I'm sorry to see so many who it isn't working for.

I have been fine on Aviane except for the fact that my periods have almost stopped apart from some spotting mid-month and a very very light flow.

The side effects described bu most of you- the anger depression etc I suffered from whilst on Microgynon and has actually gone since I started taking Aviane. I feel much better. I was so depressed at least once a month and very angry and unable to control my emotions at all. Sometimes just so lost and scared of how I felt because I couldn't think straight. I never realized that it could be my pill until I stopped taking it after TEN long years!!!

So I guess all pills affect different women in different ways. I would say just keep trying different ones until you find what's right for you...

I had my Mirena IUD placed in on July 08, I've had a period every month since then; waiting to see when im actually not going to menstruate. It is not as heavy as it was before the mirena, it has been a light flow that lasts about 3-6 days. I have awful mood swings, Wanting to take everything out on my husband.. Very horrible migraines , so horrible I can't even function. I break out from time to time, and i have NEVER had acne! I have been experiencing tremendous hair loss. Thinking I just had a baby so that may be the reason why my hair is falling out..Im always tired and depressed! Now im hearing some doctors cant even find the thing!!.... Never again... Id rather have another baby

I had the Mirena put in July 3rd 08 at my 6 week check up after I had my second child. I did not have much pain during insertion. However now (about a year later) is a different story. I am glad that I found this page, and I am not alone. I have the common side effects that others list on here like weight gain, mood swings, irregular periods that are different consistency (clots, stringing, heavy flow, light flow), extreme fatigue but unable to sleep, lack of interest in normal activities, and breast tenderness. I know I expected the mood swings, weight gain (but did not think it would be the 18lbs i gained while i was eating healthy and working out) and cramping for a few months after insertion. However the past 2 months I have had a lot of pain in my pelvis. Cramping is not the right word for it, it feels like pressure on my pelvis. Like someone is standing on what feels like my ovary. This is also with the occasional flutter in my stomach that feels like a baby kicking. I have gotten what I believe is my period and took a pregnancy test that was negative. The pain is mainly on the right side which goes around to my hip and sometimes up to my shoulder. It has now turned into a stabbing pain in my lower middle abdomen (this is all with no other bleeding other than my 3 day period). I am calling to doctor tomorrow to get myself checked out. I feel the strings in the same place I always have but the pain is something I can no longer take. I am not sure that this is worth it anymore, I think its time to talk to the husband about a vasectomy!

After being on several birth controls for 5 years, the past 3 have been on NuvaRing. It was great for 2 years but the past year hasn't been great. I was getting my periods on Tuesdays and very light flow that lasted 3 days. Now I get it on Wednesdays and it lasts 5-6 days. Not to mention the horrible, painful cramps I get when I take the ring out. I have gained an enormous amount of weight and become very emotional with constant mood swings. I know with the other birth controls I have been on my body got so used to them to that it started rejecting the hormones. I have to say that the same thing is happening with NuvaRing. While by body was accepting it, NuvaRing was a great alternative to a pill. But, all good things must come to an end so today was my last day on it. I'm curious to see what happens next.

I was prescribed FEMCON FE to control an unregulated, heavy and extremely painful cycle—and apparently, this is the only BC pill that can do so when one is ALSO prescribed anti-epileptic meds. I was bleeding (and cramping) uncontrollably for 3-4 weeks when put on FEMCON; I’ve been on it for 2 full months. Fortunately I didn’t do much research before beginning the pill—I didn’t really have a CHOICE of pills—these posts would have terrified me… Everyone’s systems are so different, and respond so crazily, especially when it comes to hormones. FEMCON, at least so far, has regulated mine beautifully, with minimal hitches (nothing unusual for BC pills). Some of the past positive postings are similar to what I would have to say—when I was on Yasmin, I still had long, painful, and heavy periods. On FEMCON, again so far, it’s been cut to 3-4 days of super light flow. LOVELY! I suffer from severe chronic migraines, and the halfway-mark seemed to cause me a particularly difficult time, but again, this is nothing FEMCON-specific. It just took me a bit aback. Good luck, all!

I was put on Loestrin 24 FE because I was bleeding for over a month. The doctor did a D&C and I bled for another week. I was going to go on a progesterone cream but couldn't find one, so when I went back to the dr a week later we decided to try this pill. The nurse told me 99% of the women who go on it love it because they don't get a period or they only have a slight one. Needless to say, I was excited. I took the pill and within 12 hours I stopped bleeding and my emotions were stabilized. After 2-1/2 weeks on the pill, I started to spot then had a light flow until I started the brown pills on Sunday and got a real period. Tomorrow I start the 2nd pack but I am going to see if this bleeding stops by Friday and if not I am going to make an appt with my gyn to discuss a change of plan. I know it takes time for your body to adjust to a new pill, and my body is going through pre-menopause, but if I am put on a pill to stop the bleeding and I continue to bleed, that tells me the pill is not working for me. I have had headaches and tiredness this month, but my energy seems to be returning and the headaches aren't that much of a bother....yet. On the good side, my emotions are still stabilized and I am not snapping anyone's head off as I was for the past 8 months. That has been a plus with this pill.

I have 3 children. My last was born in October of 2003. Mirena inserted December 2003. It has been the "best thing since sliced bread" for me. I never had any significant side effects and it completely wiped out my period.( Ive always had a light flow anyway and never any cramps- yeah I'm lucky) and I of course never got pregnant over the 5 years it was in. I just had it replaced yesterday.

I think that having a light period & previously having children helped in my situation and maybe that is the case for those of us that have no issues.

I also think that having it inserted shortly after giving birth may have allowed me to chalk up some side effects to post partum. But still, nothing that I can remember.

I'm bummed to see so many complaints because it really has been a great experience for me.

Good Luck All.

I posted here on July 15, and would like to update.
(I had been on Yasmin for 3 years and got off it at the end of June, then experienced severe migraine and fatigue as well as weight gain of 6lb in a few days)

On July 16 I had a little bleeding, and migraine stopped. Then, within a few days, my skin and hair became very oily. A few pimples appeared on my face. I hadn't had a pimple for 6-7 years and my skin had been dry. I keep losing and gaining a few pounds in a day, and my fingers and face swell especially when I get up in the morning. I had migraine and felt extremely tired on August 12 - 15. On August 16, I got my 'period' that felt fake - even lighter than when I was on Yasmin. It started very slowly, and very light flow continued for about 5-6 days. No cramp.

I don't feel normal yet. I get water retention, and my skin is still very oily. I got a pimple on my neck and some on face. My skin feels very irritated and feels like there're tiny pimples all over my face. I feel overly worried about things that are beyond my control.
Good news is my sex drive recovered and I haven't had yeast or BV.

I hope we feel better (normal) soon. I will update again. Thank you for reading.

Amber here again... today is week 4 since having Mirena removed. Yesterday I started my first period (yay!). Although, I recommend stocking up on "super" feminine products. I've always had a light flow, so I get regular tampons and use maybe 1 per day. That assumption was a mistake. I've gone through 4? 5? I've lost count, and ruined a pair of underwear. I finally wised up and put on a panty liner (just in case).

My skin is silky soft.. no more big weird boils on my back, chest and face (that would never pop, they just sat there and festered). The B.O and vaginal odor (both caused by constant and excessive sweating) is GONE. I even go on hour long bike rides and I still smell like deoderant. It's totally amazing.
My 4 month pregnant tummy went down the first night of having Mirena removed and I had my shape back, even if I am heavier. I can actually feel my stomach muscles again. Thank God.
I haven't lost any weight, I haven't tried quite frankly.
I've noticed some increase in sex drive, although not huge yet. Sex doesn't seem disgusting anymore. That's a plus.
I can't comment on mood swings, because I've been on Prozac for 2.5 months and you can't just stop taking it. I am planning on weaning, but I heard you get a Mirena Crash so I have been continueing for now.
Let me just say that before I went on the prozac I experienced depression I'd never felt before, especially during PMS... I have never ever felt that in my life it was the most bizarre thing.
My sex drive is probably also effected by the Prozac.
Most people have said they felt like they were in a 'fog' while they had the Mirena in. I've noticed increased spaciness since having it removed. I frequently walk into a room and forget why I went there. This happens to everyone I'm sure, and myself even, but not ALL the time.
I had Mirena from Sept 2006 until March 2008.
I didn't start experiencing such awful side effects until Sept 2007 (a year into it). Altho, I DID gain 20 lbs by the year mark. And all in my gut.

Anyway hope this helps.

Amber
