I am a 51 year old woman and I have been on Lisinopril for about 12 months. At first it was 20mg, then increased to 40mg per day. I started having shortness of breath and decided to cut back to the 20mg after a month or so. I am a nurse so I often adjust meds that I am on. I found this board about two months ago. I am so glad I did! I have BP of about 126/82 on meds. I have just stopped the 20mg two days ago, after developing more chest pain. I have lost all the weight that I needed to and eat a low salt diet now. I already feel better today. Chest pain is almost gone. I see my DR. tomorrow about all of this. I am going to try to stay off all HTN meds if I can! I had so many side effects that I never realized were being caused by this horrible drug. Some of them included: chest pain, shortness of breath, rib pain, extreme hair loss, tingling in all extremities, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, loss of appetite, loss of sex drive, difficulty thinking and comprehension, memory loss. I just wanted to let others know that I also know this drug is very dangerous. I am hopeful that I will continue to feel better as the weeks go by.

I have been reading all of your posts and I am surprised by what I am hearing. Especially the depression, loss of sex drive, and hair loss. I did check out their website (http://www.nuvaring.com/Consumer/aboutNuvaRing/possibleSideEffects/index.asp) and it seems they are actually pretty honest about the possible side effects. HOWEVER... although I checked the site before I started taking the ring 2 years ago, I kind of ignored the "possible" side effects as just that, "possible." Because I've never had any problems with medications or birth control before I didn't think they would happen to me.

Last week I 2 days late in putting in the ring and since then my breasts have been SO tender I can barely walk. Seriously, it's awful and I know it is the hormones from the ring. Until this point, I have had no problems with it, in fact I have really enjoyed its convenience and effectiveness. But after reading all of your posts I am wondering if I should rethink using it... I have been feeling really down, angry and anxious over the last few months and not really craving sex with my boyfriend like a 22 year old women should!! I don't want to over react and blame it on the NuvaRing if it could be other things in my life, but I also don't want to ignore it either because if taking the ring out would make me feel better, more healthy, less angry, etc...

What should I do?

I am 45 years old. I get the impression many of the ladies here are younger, as they speak of having younger children, so I will tell my side from a bit more "mature" (ie older!) perspective:

Had Mirena for a little over 9 months. My two MAIN side effects were a development of terrible cystic acne on my face, back, shoulders, hairline, behind my ears and straight down my spine, ending in a nice lovely rash just above my tailbone. These things were deep, solid knots under the skin, not average little pimples. Worse acne I've ever had, and at my age too!

Second, profuse sweating under my breasts and lower back, again just at my tailbone, right above my butt. After drying off from a shower, I'd run my hand back there and still feel soaked. This did not seem related to hot flashes. Just sweating, and I think that contributed to the acne, which was beginning to leave scars it was so deep.

I do feel like I gained weight, my pants were much tighter and I just felt bloated all the time.

Fortunately, no hair loss or emotional side effects. I've had anxiety for years and take Ativan (lorazepam) which keeps it pretty much under control. No loss of sex drive either. It seems there are a distinct set of side effects, and some get them in different combination than others, but we're ALL getting them one way or the other!

OBGYN said as the Mirena is only progesterone, I was missing the estrogen which were the 2 components of the pill I took for years with no trouble. He gave me a Rx for a low dose of estrogen. Now I am getting what I had in the pill in 2 separate forms, and having these awful side effects on top of it. It didn't help.

So I had Mirena removed 6 days ago. Luckily he found the strings, told me to cough, and pulled it out, no pain! I immediately went back on Alesse BC pill that same day, so no break in hormones, but I handled the BC pill fine all those years, so I"m just going back on it. Have been bleeding ever since removal, but I figure that is just my body "getting back at me" for not having periods for months. My first real one, due in about 3 weeks following the pill schedule will probably be the period from hell. Ok, I accept that. My uterus wants to get this poison toxic mess out of me, and I'm ok with that.

I'm crossing my fingers that I will miss the "crash" I've read so much about. As it seems to be mostly psychological, and I didn't have those side effects to begin with, maybe it won't be so bad, or at all. Of course that could just be wishful thinking on my part! So far, 6 days of having it out of me and I already feel 100% better! My face cleared up in a matter of days. The sweating stopped immediately. My pants are looser, although I still weigh the same. The bloated feeling is gone. I just feel thinner. Before, my profile in the mirror looked like I was 4 months pregnant! That too is going down quick. Good luck to all who have it removed. Things can only get better!

And don't let any doctor tell you you can't have it out! It's your body! You can demand whatever you want, especially if you feel like it is making you sick! Do not take no for an answer. You don't even owe them an explanation. Just a "Sorry, it's not for me..." at the most.

Good luck to all....

I'm 24 years old and have never had a child. I've jumped around to different birth control methods.
I was on Depo-provera which made me gain mad weight, stop having my period all together and loss of sex drive. Then I decided to try Nuvaring...another poor mistake. I started having my period again and lost the Depo weight (plus some) but I became a loaded gun waiting to go off! I was biting everyone's head off and felt extremely bitter. It never stayed in place though and I felt like I was always fooling with it.
My next great venture (with which I'm still experiencing the "joys" of) was Mirena. I went to have it put in while on my period, a rather light one. The insertion wasn't agony but was no pic-nic in the damn park either. Afterwards I reinserted my tampon as my Gyno said was fine to do. I was in a world of pain by this time. I only walked a block before stopping at the nearest restroom and realizing that I was covered in blood and the pain was getting worse with each passing moment.
My boyfriend came to get me and I spent the rest of the evening crying, in pain and in the fetal position. It got better after a few weeks just in time for my check-up. The Gyno went on about the pain being 'normal' and that 'it would fade over time'.
Well, it's been 2 1/2 years and it still hurts. Sex in certain positions kill me, my hair is thinning, I've gain all the Depo weight back and just to remind me the bastard is there I feel stabbing pains randomly that last from a few seconds to a couple of days. I can still feel the string but c'mon....what's the freaking deal??

I just want to reply to you and everyone else who is having difficulty with doctors acknowledging mirena side effects. I work in pharmaceutical research and what people need to understand is that clinical trials only test on samples of about 5,000 patients and the side effects observed in those people are the ones acknowledged in the literature your doctors are referring to. The problem with that is for a drug sample population to statistically represent the actual US population it would have to be at least 30,000 people. This is not feasible even for the most profitable big pharma companies. So once these drugs get to market, there are inevitably going to be people experiencing side effects not reflected in clinical trials.

That said, I had Mirena put in 6 weeks after giving birth to my son in August 2008. Pre-preg I weighed 132, at 9 months I was 173. I left the hospital weighing 152. When i got mirena inserted i had been loosing slowly due to breastfeeding, but I was loosing and weighed 145. By Christmas 2008 I weighed 155. So I started working out, circuit training 45 minutes, 5 days a week, and eating much healthier for 6 weeks. Like others assuming it was a change in lifestyle, stress whatever. I didn't loose a pound. After no success I cut down to less intense workouts but kept eating well. By June 2009 I was 163. At 132 lbs pre-preg at 5'4" I never worked out, I'm not kidding, ever and I was not a healthy eater, I just wasn't a big eater.

So August 10th 2009 at 168 lbs and fed up, I went to the doctor to have it removed. They insisted it was not the mirena, but if for no other reason I had to find out for myself why I could not loose weight, if i was still overweight afterwards then so be it, but I had to know.

I'm glad to announce that today September 21st, I have "inexplicably" lost 21 pounds in counting. I have not worked out like I did in those six weeks, brisk walks at the most, and I have continued eating healthy. I'm not advising anyone on what to do, I just know when I was contemplating getting this thing removed, I wanted to hear from someone who had actually gotten it removed. Also, I did not the emotional or dermatological side effects others described.

I'm 23 and began taking BC for the first time about 2 months ago. My gyn recommended Loestrin 24, and I'm just now starting my third pack.
So far I've noticed the following side effects:

1. Breast tenderness - they are constantly sore. (In the past they would only be sore during my period.) It's somewhat annoying, as I used to enjoy having the boy play with "the girls", but now he has to be completely gentle or I start cringing.

2. Moodiness - there have been 2, possibly 3 occasions so far where I've been quite depressed/ apathetic/ generally negative/ irritable for several hours without real cause, and was unable to "snap out of it".

Frightening, but infrequent, and therefore bearable once you recognize what's happening.

3. LOSS OF SEX DRIVE - by far the scariest side effect, especially since the whole point of me taking BC was to be able to have sex with my boyfriend (without getting preggers, of course.)

Fortunately I've only noticed this on 2, possibly 3 occasions - the boy was goin' to town, giving' me the WORKS - which usually does the job quite nicely, but this time my response was, "meh." No arousal at all.

Completely frustrating - for me, because I hate being unable to respond sexually to the guy I love, and for him, because what worked before isn't working now. randomly. for no reason.

4. Period, periods, ALL THE TIME - I've had my period 5 times in the past 8 weeks. RIDICULOUS. completely ridiculous. And I'm not talking occasional light "spotting" that comes and goes - no. It's like, I'm thinking about buying stock in Playtex because I am single-handedly bringing about full economic recovery with my bulk tampon purchases. Five days (often more) of bein' on the rag full-time.
Ridiculous.

(Although to be fair, there were a couple times where I forgot to take a pill one night, and had to take two the next day.... I'm forgetful. and distractible. This could be causing the excessive periods.)

5. Other side effects - I haven't gotten fat, or pimply, or nausea, or sleeplessness, or headaches; at least, not that I've noticed.

Good luck finding decent BC that doesn't make you fat and crazy, ladies!!

I am 22, I started using the NuvaRing about 4 months ago. I took it out and I am not putting it back in. I HAD NO SEX DRIVE!!!! I also had really bad mood swings and got depressed really easily, which is not my personality at all. Especially the first couple days after I put it in I would be just crazy. I also had a lot of burning after sex and I could not keep it in to have sex because it hurt so bad. My doctor said most people can't feel it during sex, but for me it hurt. My biggest complaint is the total and complete loss of sex drive. I can't explain it. I have read other people's posts on here and I am glad to find out that it's not just me and it's not just all in my head.

I'm 26. I was on the Nuvaring for about 2.5 years. I didn't really realize much for side effects. I had short, light periods, no cramping. Did gain a few pounds...maybe 10 or so, but never really thought it was because of the ring. Nothing really to complain about except for the complete loss of sex drive. It's been an ongoing issue with my fiance and I for about 1.5 years now. I had no idea why I wasn't interested in sex, and he felt it must have been him.

After a year and a half with no sex drive, and an upcoming wedding we were really concerned with our sex life. We did some research, and after reading all the possible side effects decided to discontinue using the ring.

I took it out at the regular time, had my one week break, and never put it back in. I have been off it now for 14 days. I had a regularly timed period, although it was extremely heavy and lots of cramping. My period finished on Aug. 13th.

It's Aug. 21st today, and yesterday I got my period again. It's extremely heavy, lots of clots, and cramping (which is not normal for me).

I am dizzy, nauseated, very tired, have back pain, feel overly emotional, and have absolutely no appetite at all! I'm having hot & cold flashes, and feeling all around like crap! I was worried that I possibly got pregnant during my period-free week, and was having a miscarriage.

I've done some reading, and I think it's safe to say that its the effects of stopping the Nuvaring. I'm hoping this doesn't last too long!!

On the bright side, after not having the Nuvaring in place for a week, my sex drive is completely back to normal!

I will never use the Nuvaring again, and I wouldn't recommend it!

I have had mirena since July of 2006.. I never thought about the things I was feeling could be related until I just read your blogs! I constantly feel pregnant and I am talking all the symptoms!!! Bloating and stomach pains included! Depression, anxiety, sleepiness here lately, severe back pain, numbness.. I am almost 25 and thought some of these problems were growing pains(I know that probably sounds nuts). Please if anyone has a suggestion as far as what I should do here is my e-mail address ******! I need advice and it looks like the doctor's just want to make a buck!!
Thanks,
R.

I have been on the NuvaRing for a little less than 2 years now. Everything seemed fine until four months ago when I started to get very intense "irritations" in my vaginal area. I thought I was inflicting this upon myself because I switched to boy shorts underwear and a little tighter jeans. My ob/gyn attributed my problem to using a new brand of soap and a new brand of pantiliner, and she simply suggested I "soak my bum" in the tub 1-2 times a day to reduce the irritation. (She's British.) She also suggested I use as much A&D diaper rash ointment (which is mainly petroleum jelly) as I wanted or needed. After 2 months of continued vaginal irritation, my ob/gyn simply said that what I had can take a while to clear up, and that I should just continue to soak my bottom and use as much A&D ointment as I needed.

After reading everyone's postings, I've learned that it's not unheard-of for one's body to take several months to show NuvaRing side effects. I share the same symptoms of complete loss of sex drive, vaginal dryness and intense pain during sex that many of you have described. I went through so many months of accepting these conditions because I thought all of those things were happening because I was nearing my 40th birthday and simply getting older. Those of you in your 20's that described similar symptoms helped me realize that what I was experiencing wasn't natural.

I've decided to take my NuvaRing out and stay birth control free for a couple of months to see the irritability goes away. I am very eager and hopeful to lose my dependency on A&D ointment, to want to have sex again, and to wear boy shorts and tight jeans again.

I have been taking Wellbutrin XL 300MG for 18 months now. It definitely cured my depression but since last couple of months I noticed my hair falling at an alarming rate. I can now see my scalp in several places. It is discouraging. I am going to lower the dose to 150MG and then stop after some time.

Seems like we're all in the same boat. I'm 43 and the Loestrin makes me breakout horribly, I scar very easily so now I get to deal with that. It happens in the first week of every month so I tried over the counter acne products, it helps keep it ay bay but the scars from it are just bad, now more money to spend to fix that. Mood swings?! Look out, I can't be around anything or anyone, I live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids and barking dogs and just want to duct tape their mouths shut, that's how aggravated I get, which starts at the mid to end of week 2 of the pills. My periods are pretty much non-existent but I've always had light periods so that doesn't bother me at all, yeah the loss of sex drive is bad too, plus being all bloated and huge now-AAHH!!!
I gained weight, could eat a house and not be satisfied, depression, etc. I'm trying Alesse, or the generic of that next, whatever is covered by the insurance, I told my doc I can't take it anymore, the loestrin she could give me a lot of sample packs for because my insurance won't cover that specific brand and $60 a month for them being unemployed now is really out of the question. I can only hope for the best on the Alesse.
Only advice I can give to anyone with the depression factor, try to work out, go for a long walk, it really helps too.
Good luck everyone and hang in there!!!

I decided to google "nuvaring side effects" after putting two and two together today...

Due to some complications, I switched from OrthoTriCyclen Lo to NuvaRing about 5 months ago. Having been on OrthLo for so many years (about 4, and Ortho regular for about 5 years), my uterline lining was shedding, which in turn caused bleeding in between my periods. I had heard good things about NR, so I asked about switching to that. First month seemed good... then I started noticing changes in my body and emotional state of mind.
Started with nausea, then I ran the gamut - headaches, back pain, fatigue, mood swings, LOSS OF SEX DRIVE & WEIGHT LOSS (the worst two).

Being that I am generally a pretty stable 27 year old woman, all of these little things stood out but I couldn't figure out what was going on. The weight gain got me good... I gained about 8 lbs - which is A LOT for me. I work out 6 days a week and have a very healthy diet - nothing had changed except my birth control, i.e. the ring. I even started up'ing my cardio 30 more minutes a day to get back to normal, but to no avail. Traumatizing. And the no yearning for sex thing is horrible too... my poor fiance.

While there is no way to tell for sure that NR is the cause of all these side effects, it only seems rationale. It would be too much of a coincidence that so many of us women have these neg effects - all similar.

After reading most of these reviews, I got on the phone and called my gyno. Plan is to stay off everything for one full period (plus the withdrawal period), then to switch back to an oral contraceptive. Just have to use condoms in the meantime - small price to pay to avoid all the nasty sides effects.

NR has already been removed. Thank you all for sharing... this made me want to share, as well.

Been taking Lotrel (at least 5 years), then generic without connecting the dots. Constant back pain, easly fatigued, leg muscle soreness, occasionally a swelling in the inside of the mouth over a couple of days until a layer of skin flakes off and goes away (to return many weeks later), light spotted rash on topside of forearms, muscle weakness in arms with arms elevated, definite loss of sex drive, no endurance, easily prone to heavy sweating, back muscles extremely tight and rigid causing pains when exerting with repeated constant motion, blood work showing muscle damage, possible short term memory issues and ability to concentrate, periods of times with the feeling of constrictions on the body compared to a inflated balloon walls stressed with pressure. Exercise (walking) causes a drop in blood pressure to normal (110-125/68-84) compared to 140/90+/-.

I just had a baby five months ago. Started taking Yaz at my six week check-up. I am 28 yrs old. My side effects include: mood swings, MAJOR LOSS OF SEX DRIVE, weight gain, headaches, nausea at night before bed, Inability to pay attention, Restlessness, backaches, An aversion to touch, sometimes I feel as if I don't have any emotions at all. depressed for no reason. and so vary tired all time. I had taken Yaz before and experienced some side effects but was only on for a month my effects were headaches, and break through bleeding. Had a baby and tried it again and now I am just wondering what is wrong with me. My wonderful husband has been so understanding and wants his wife back lol. After reading other postings I am not going to finish this months pack and stop this craziness once and for all.

I've been taking Balziva for over a year, and I don't know what the heck these people are talking about! I think that before taking the pill they had serious menstrual and emotional problems. Before birth control I had long, heavy and painfully crippling periods. I do not have that anymore. My periods last about 4-5 days which are not painful and moderate flow at best. Actually, until recently, they had been so light that I couldn't use tampons and a panty liner was sufficient. Maybe the last couple times have I been heavy enough for a tampon (perhaps because my body finally adjusted after the last few years of birth control.) I was a moody person before birth control so I'm definitely now blaming that on the pill. I still get extra angry/moody that week, but I did before the pill too. And the only time I spot between periods is when I miss a pill, which only lasts for a couple days.

The only side effect that I could say is caused by the drug is the loss of sex drive. But again, that may not necessarily be the pill. It could be my place in life. I'm a college student with an extremely busy schedule - full time school loaded with too much homework and I work as a flight instructor (tell me teaching some new by how to land is not stressful!!) Oh, and I lost the closest person to me two years ago which I still haven't accepted and basically closed my heart after that. I don't have trouble losing weight as long as I watch my diet and exercise. I don't really think that Balziva has caused any negative side effects, at least nothing that could be explained by something else in my life. I gain weight because I let myself go on break. I lose weight because I eat right and exercise after that.

I had my Mirena for a little over a year. I started getting really bad acne approx. 4-5 months ago. I believe it was due to the hormones in the Mirena. I saw a dermatologist and she said that the hormone can make you more androgenic thus causing acne. I had my Mirena removed about 1 week ago and I am having really bad mood swings, loss of sex drive, tender breasts, and headaches. I also had a problem that started with my wrist back in December. Has anyone else had wrist pain or any joint pain?

I have been taking Yaz for six months now, and I'm stopping after I finish this pack. I've been on it this long because I thought at first the side effects caused by it were just the beginnings of aging for me (I'm 25), but the acceleration of my problems has been so noticeable that I can't be in denial any more! Basically, here's what I have:

-thinner hair that comes out more easily and doesn't grow back as fast (it would be nice if this were restricted to "unwanted" hair, but this actually includes my eyelashes, eyebrows and head hair, which have all gotten noticeably lighter and thinner)

-CELLULITE, which I never had before...not only on my thighs but on my bum and CALVES, I didn't even realize it was possible to get cellulite there!

-spider veins on my upper thighs, again, never had this before

-very decreased sex drive

-thinner skin with less elasticity

-memory problems

-much increased vaginal discharge

Now, it's not all losses...my boobs are bigger when I actively take the pills, and my skin has become less acne prone...but is all that other stuff really worth it??? I think not.

Wow what a relief to see so many other people suffering from this 'evil' device. I had my Mirena put in in sept. '06 after the birth of my second baby. The insertion was fine and all was great after. No periods things were great. Then the side effects..Instead of my period I got horrible yeast infections every month and still was bleeding. Mood swings yes. Loss of sex drive yes. Acne yes. I just made the appt. to get it removed. I will take heavy periods over yeast infections and no sex drive at 30 years old. I will let everyone know how removal goes. Hope this helps someone.

I can't wait to contact my doctor tomorrow! I had the Mirena inserted in July 07. This was about 16 months after the birth of my 2nd child (I had been using the NuvaRing prior) and thought it was great! I had some minor cramping and a little spotting for about one week. After that, no cramping and no periods. Also at that time, I started taking Lexapro for depression as well. Fast forward one year to July 08, I had gained over 20 pounds and I thought it was the antidepressant.I joined a gym and hired a personal trainer! (Before getting the Mirena, I had lost 41 pounds from my 2nd child). In October 08, I was at my OBGYN for my annual and talked about the weight gain, sluggishness, etc. Her suggestion was to get off the Lexapro first and see if that helped. No mention of the Mirena. (And I do understand that antidepressants can cause weight gain). Well, I did that and was put on Wellbutrin since that is not supposed to cause weight gain. That has not worked. I am still working with a personal trainer and working out 2-3 times per week and eating fairly healthy. Since July 08, I have gained 23 more pounds and in the past 2 weeks, I have gained 5 pounds. I have always attributed my issues to being depressed or the antidepressants (including headaches, loss of sex drive, irritability, bloated stomach, etc.) I am pretty much at the end of my rope and this site is giving me hope!!! I am going to get this out as soon as possible and hope that this is what is causing it. I plan to post again 1 month after removal for progress.

I Have just spent $90 AU Dollars = $120US and after using the ring before, thought i would give it another go...its the 15th April 2009...and after two weeks of being on it i have experienced "The dreaded weight Gain" it feels more like water retention and tightness, not necessarily fat, as i am an active person, weigh 52KG , my height is 156.6 CM witch is considered normal for my age, I am 23yrs old.
BUT......now i remember what my side effects where, i stopped a year ago as i finished with my boyfriend there was no need to use it, as i have a new boyfriend now i have started it again...and my side effects are the same but now i can add two more effects its had on me:

Last year- dryness, loss of sex drive as when your body isn't naturally lubricating during the sexual experience this intern stops or disrupts the sexual process...ie foreplay and flow of intimacy.

This year- Only two and a half weeks with the ring in and i weigh
54-55 KG'S, that is 3 kilo grams (think of 3 bags of sugar) in two weeks tight upper thighs...and bloated abdominal. Pulse dryness and i guess the loss of sex drive will kick in again....so as of today i have taken it out ...and i haven't even finished the first ring....

I am not one to air these things but the weight gain was sooo sudden, i'm not allergic to anything i'm a very happy person, laid back, never broken a bone in my body...thats not important but you see my opinion is that i think the makers prayed on the fact that most of us skipped a pill or two....

( witch I was prone to do that's the
biggest reason i went on the ring)

and thought well so many women want connivance no fuss contraception and rushed an appealing concept to us lady's and the forgetfulness in most of us took it hook line and sinker....I'm a graphic designer so i can see how they may have marketed this....look it worked on me and i study marketing....soo good luck i hope this was helpful.....

Regards,
Cc

I had Mirena put in after the birth of my first child, 19 months ago. I have to say, I like Mirena because of the following;
-no periods EVER!
-no cramping or bloating
-no worrying about protection

BUT
-I never want to have sex so what's the point of having Mirena?

So, I'm having it taken out.

I hope it helps my sex drive and my moodiness. I am a pretty happy person usually but the last year I have HATED my husband and feel repelled by the thought of sex. This is unusual because I like sex... or at least I did. I thought my decreased sex drive was because our lives changed so much with a baby, but our child sleeps 13 hours a night and is as good as can be, so what's my problem??

My marriage has definitely suffered because of my lack of sex drive and my irritability. I can't be sure it's Mirena, but I'm taking it out all the same.

Hope it gets better.

Thanks for all your posts regarding loss of sex drive and Mirena, it might not be Mirena's fault, but then again, it might be.

My marriage means too much to me.

I have been on Yaz for 8 months and up until reading this website I thought I was either a) falling apart physically or b) a crazy hypochondriac!
I have had severe GI issues (gas, bloating, constipation, diahrrea etc.), headaches, neck pain, irrational irritibility, depression, anxiety, dizzy spells, unexplained weight gain (about 10 pounds, especially in the belly area), COMPLETE loss of sex drive, vaginal dryness, lack of ability to become aroused and if I do delayed orgasm (20-30 or stimulation before I can climax), fatigue and insomnia, skin rashes, shortness of breath, decreased immunity etc.
I am stopping this pill tonight after reading all of these other entries confirming the fact that I am not crazy!
