I just want to say thanks to all of the women who have taken the time to document their varied experiences with Mirena. I have two sons and was pondering trying Mirena while my husband and I figure out if we want to have a third child. Honestly, I'd rather chance it until we know for sure. These side effects are ridiculous! I wouldn't have this put in my uterus for a million dollars! I don't enjoy the idea of any type of foreign substance or drug in my body. And this??? I can't believe my dr. would even suggest it! It's too bad, too. What is touted as the convenient, carefree birth control is, perhaps, convenient. But certainly not carefree, and definitely dangerous. Sure, it might be a comfortable option for some women, but do I really want to chance cysts, horrid mood swings, massive weight gain, hair loss, and migraines? I know what my answer to that is.

I had Mirena inserted after the birth of my 2nd daughter - November 07. Things were going ok (at least that was what I thought) until about two months ago. I really did not think about the Mirena much. Maybe that was because my sex drive has been soooo gone that I have only used the benefit of the Mirena about 3 times. The problems I guess really started when my period disappeared. That happened 3 months after I got in inserted. I thought that was going to be great because my periods usually last 7 days from start to fully finished. But with this thing, I did not bleed but I definitely was still having a period. Bach aches, mood swings, headaches, bloating, etc. I started to think something was really wrong when I got a headache that lasted about a week, and I don't normally get headaches that last longer than a few hours. I could not figure out what was wrong with me. I even went to the emergency room to have them tell me that there was nothing wrong and it was probably just stress. I started to think that maybe it is the Mirena. I started doing searches on the adverse side effects of the Mirena and thank God I found you guys. I have most of the symptoms described here and other Mirena side effect pages. I will be having this awful thing removed in about two weeks. I don't know what my husband and I are going to do about birth control. We both do not want anymore kids but I am only 28 and do not want to have my tubes tied.
Headaches
Joint Pains
Low Back Pain
Mood Swings
No Sex Drive
Massive weight Gain (I have not lost any of my baby weight plus i put on a few more pounds)
Breasts Double in Size
Fatigue
Dizziness
Depression (low self-esteem)
My feet have even grown (probably because of the weight gain)

I went on the NuvaRing because it would regulate my hormones- I have IBS and get sick a few days before my period. The NR was great for keeping my IBS at bay. However, I gained over 15 pounds while on it. I had not changed my eating habits or activity level. The only thing I could associate to the massive weight gain, enlarged, swollen, and sore breasts was the ring. Even after hiring a personal trainer, eating healthier, and working out multiple times a week, I couldn't lose weight. I finally decided to take the ring out. After two weeks of being "ring free", people can see a difference in my weight- and I haven't gone to the gym to work out in over 3 weeks. Now I have to suffer through painful periods and digestive problems because I can't bare the weight gain that comes with the ring. If anyone knows of another form of BC that does not cause weight gain, please let me know.

I haven't taken this drug yet I am about to go get it from the store and I do not know when to take this medication. Morning or night? I already have racing thoughts at night so I do not want to be more awake at night than I already am. I also suffer from a weight issue, is this medication going to help me loose or gain weight? I cant afford to gain a few, I can afford to loose a few. I also suffer from back pain now so I do not want that to increase. Anyone have any helpful tips for me?

I have been on Yasmin for 4 years. I switched from Ortho-Tri-Cyclin because the massive weight gain. I have had no visible problems with Yasmin until recently. I have not gained any weight, but I work out 5 times a week. Now, after reading other posts, I realize that I have had many of these problems. The past year or so, I have been crying for no reason at all. I have been extremely tired no matter how much sleep I get, a loss of sex drive ( which is hurting my relationship), very painful sex, and have had respiratory problems. Over the past couple of months, I have had severe gas, which has never been a problem before. It is painful. I have had very bad TMJ for about 2 years now. I have never had any problems with my jaw before then. The pain is on my left side. I just read some of the side effects of Yasmin, and left-sided jaw is one of them. I am going to talk to my Gyno about switching at my next visit. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know why this happens?

Happy New Year to all
Hi there i am officially one year and 2 months off yasmin and i can tell you all its hard and each day is hard as you go through each and every symptom and every anxiety attack and every pain that you think may be leading to a heart attack/stroke/blod clot etc, and i am still here 14months after finishing this damn pill but i can tell you ITS GETS BETTER. to the new ladies to recap i was on the pill for almost 3years and yes i went through every side effect and struggled each and every day to the point i thought i was losing it even having a heart attack and life was so hard with a job and three young children and i felt like i was going insane and then i stumbled on this site and found silke and all the girls.
the first three months were horrendosu and the symptoms were so severe and i struggled immensly but then as i approached month five it slowly began to get better each and every day and i had everything high blood pressure huge weight gain massive anxiety heart palps i had to quit my job i was not coping and yet every day i came to this site and after a long six months i was getting better and better, i just want you all to know to hang in there i took it day by day and i know thats so hard when you are going through it but guess what i have been there and its gonne be ok. I took magnesium, vitamin c, a good multi vitamin and flaxseed capsules and i think these helped immensly, I have just been diagnosed with low iron so am on an organic supplement and my liver is not working as good as what it should so my naturopath will give me something for that in late january and thats why he thinks i have massive weight gain so lets see if what he gives me helps.
take care all and remember all of us who have travelled the road and still are are here to help you to realise you are not going insane and that you are on the road to recovery even though you fell like its a battle you will never win
take care

I was diagnosed with a quirky little disease called "Minimal Change Disease" - my kidneys decided that my body did not need any protein, and without any protein in my system, I gained 55 pounds of water weight, along with few other nasty side effects like having cholesterol in the 800's and blood clots in my lungs. At this point, I have been on the drug for a little over three months - 70 mgs for the first 6 weeks, the point at which the disease went into remission. The last 6 weeks, I've been tapering off - and will be off Prednisone by the end of this week. Ironicly, I had been taking a drug that causes water retention to fight a disease that causes water retension. Fortunately, after losing the 50 pound of water weight in less than three days, I didn't see any of the massive weight gain some have reported. I have gained about 8 pounds in the past 6 weeks that I've been tapering off the drug. The only other side effect I had was this euphoric, ethereal feeling I would have about mid-morning where my concentration was that of a 2 year old (I have experience in that because I have a 2 year old), and by mid-afternoon, I would race around the office in a flurry of activity - and get absolutely nothing accomplished. It was a weird sensation - kind of fun, but disconcerting - of being giddy as though I was drunk. I had to really sit down at my desk and force myself to behave and do my work. I also had quite a few nights in which I would wake up in the wee hours of the morning and to force myself to read the dictionary just to fall back asleep. Sure the drug has some nasty side-effects, and can really mess with your head, but so can being a 200 pound albino blueberry. And there were no Oompa Loompas around to take me down to the juicer. As to the side effects, I realized that the euphoria wasn't permanent, and I had to have a bit of fun with it when I could, and as to the weight gain, five pounds is nothing - though, there is much in my closet right now that I can't wear.

Yes, there are many women here on this site, who have experienced weight gain after stopping Yasmin!! I've posted several times about this here. Perhaps you should read more posts on this site, it really might help!!
But I'm not sure, if it's really good to take another diuretic against the water retention now. You should know, that Yasmin's hormone "drospirenone" is very similar to a diuretic named spironolacton. So all of us were taking a water pill with our bcp without knowing for a long time.
And everywhere I searched in the internet and even asking my doctor brought out, that a withdrawal effect of diuretics is more water retention then before taking such pills!!! Thats the explanation for the massive and in most cases immediate weight (or the better "water-") gain many of us were experiencing after stopping Yasmin!! My weight gain doesn't seem to look "normal", too, it looks just like every cell of my body was filled with water, a really unnormal look (and I swear before Yasmin I was a very fit, thin and good figured person!!). Everybody who knows me and especially has known me before this Yasmin desaster tells the same!!
So I and even my doctor think, that it might be better to let your body recover first before taking another chemical against the weight gain and especially going on diswatering your body with a diuretic. You might not get out of this vicious circle if you don't stop every medication that is diswatering your body!!
I know (and I mean I REALLY know!!) what it means to go through this massive weight gain (I had gained about 30 pounds after getting off Yasmin without eating more or doing anything else different than before and I went up 2 sizes in clothes, which was and still is really shocking for me!!! I SWEAR!!) without being able to do anything against it unless my body hasn't fully recovered from this Yasmin poison, yet.
But the only chance seems to be to give your body and all the diswatered cells the time they need to get back to normal by themselves!!!
Please think about that and probably talk to your doctor!! Not every doctor knows that the drospirenone in Yasmin is working like spironolacton but it really is!!! If you have any doubt about that, you might search google or anything else about drospirenon and diuretic or spironolacton. And you'll find out, that all the effects we are now experiencing (even the muscle fatigue in my case or cellulite and so on) are the same as you get if you have taken any diuretic or especially spironolacton!!
All the best to you out there and everybody stay strong!! We'll be better and pretty again some day!!! ;-)

And the Saga of Prednisone continues:
After a few weeks of 10mg per day (5mg AM 5mg PM) I am now down to 7.5 mg per day (last 3 days). The 10 mg allowed a lot of the side effects to start to fade: weight is steady or decreasing. I only gained about 5 lbs but that is now down to 1 or 2. I'm working out so I'm adding muscle as well as losing fat so I dont expect massive weight loss. (For instance .. I added an inch to the circumference of my upper arm.. muscle..not fat !) The irrationality toward food (cleanup in aisle 5 has new meaning.. like cleaning one's plate !)
Yes, Im hairier ! for a guy it's in all the right places. Not only hasn't that gone away.. it's hairier still !
My face is almost back to it's gaunt thin self :) SOME of the buffalo hump has gone away and my neck has thinned a bit - so no double chin anymore - just in the last two weeks.
Never had insomnia.. never had depression (wasn't thrilled with the side effects but thats a rational reaction.. not depression) never had moodiness. Acne is getting better. I STILL RECOMMEND PHISOHEX and a LOOFAH.
My belly is still distended but then I had a lot of surgery so it could be either or both. Exercise has helped (jogging and situps) and Im a tad fatigued but getting better.
Certainly thats not all of the side effects but the statement 1 month for every week of use seems true.. and the effects go away slower than they arrived.. ]
BUT THEY DO GO AWAY.
The more permanent effects (stretch marks etc) may be permanent.. try vitamin E Aloe etc.. they may help!

I have been on about 5 different formulations of BCP's in my lifetime - the last being Ortho Tricyclene and Loestrin. Whenever I tried the BCP's, I dealt with horrible acne (I had acne normally but it really went out of control while on the BCP), massive weight gain (like 10 to 20 pounds) and depression (crying mainly).
After the birth of my son in 1997, my midwife inserted a copper type IUD due to the fact that I wasn't interested in more children. After 2 years, I suffered an ectopic pregnancy where the baby and my left ovary and fallopian tube were removed. I created a web page on my experience for others who want more information about the IUD and I frequently get asked about what type of birth control I use currently.
Sadly, for many years my husband and I either used condoms (which just leave me worring every month as to whether it worked or not) or abstenence (which is no fun). I decided to finally try Yasmin. I heard it was different from the other pill formulations out there so I thought I'd give it a shot. It was made available to the U.S. market in May of 2001 and I have just started taking it in January of 2003. I will be entering onto my 3rd month and pack in one more week.
I have experienced breast tenderness and a definite increase in size to my breasts (not sure how much, but I've heard of some women increasing by 1 to 2 sizes) and there was an initial small acne break out in the 3rd week of my first pack, but since then my face is completely clear. I have not experienced ANY bloating (and I normally experienced this even when I wasn't on any birth control) nor have I gained any weight. (normally in the past I usually gained quite a bit of weight within the first few months of taking a BCP) I did have a slight headache before my period arrived, but I normally get that every month anyway even when I'm pill free.
I guess my opinion is that I am very happy so far with this pill. If any women out there have had weight problems or acne problems on other pill formulations in the past, I would suggest you give Yasmin a try because it just might work for you.

I have been on generic Wellbutrin for almost two weeks and have not gotten a rash but have noticed that my anxiety has gone up, especially at night. I already have anxiety about not sleeping and normally will take benadryl or lunesta to help that. I also feel like I have this surge of anger, that I am not sure where it came from. Has anyone else had this? I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said to follow up on Friday and see. I am switching from lexapro to wellbutrin because of massive weight gain and to help me quit smoking. Any advice would be grateful, I can deal with it if I know its going to pass shortly!!
