All I can say is OHMYGOD! I had no idea about all these side effects. I had my son April 4th, 09 and had the Mirena placed October 21st. Since then, I have been constantly spotting, I have headaches, and no motivation to exercise. I have been moody and felt overall like blah. I have noticed some joint stiffness and discomfort in my hands as well as muscle tenderness in my legs. I have not experienced any weight gain or loss at this moment, nor have I noticed a change in hair loss...but will definitely be aware of the possibilities. Well I have a appt. for my follow up, I am going to inform my doctor of my side effects as well as yours, and see if this really is the best option for me. The last thing I want is for this to inconvenience my life when I got it just for the opposite...Good luck ladies!

It has been 7 weeks since the removal of my Mirena. I don't have any side effects except for the week before and the week of my period. Moodiness (my poor husband), dizziness, extreme fatigue, cramps, the eczema on my hands flares up... Can anyone turn on the light at the end of my dark tunnel and tell me that they no longer suffer from symptoms the same or similar to mine, post Mirena? I know everyone is different, I just feel discouraged and need to hear a success story! Thanks and God Bless.

I have been on the Mirena for 4 years, and I've passed out, had horrible anxiety attacks, and my doctor says its not the cause, that I am depressed, and everything else. Considering I NEVER felt like this before that, I decided to look it up, since it has going horribly worse. I am making an appointment today to get it taken out.

I had my Mirena put in back in June of 2008 right after I got married. I, too, was lead to believe that the effects of the progesterone were purely "localized" to the uterus and would not cause any symptoms at all.

Since then I've experienced SEVERE migraines and dizziness, loss of libido, greasy skin and hair, weight gain (size 6 to size 10/12), numbness/tingling in my feet, crying, irritability, and SEVERE brain fog. For the migraines, I went to a neurologist who wanted to prescribe me topamax and said the only major side effect is cognitive difficulties! HA!!! I already have the worst brain fog, can't remember anything, am tired.... rather..... exhausted all the time, and can't function.

This Mirena surely works well as birth control, seeing as I have NO SEX DRIVE at all! LOL. But seriously, it's great not to have a period, but I knew something was wrong when I was needing medication (antidepressants for the mood swings, provigil for the fatigue, botox nerve injections for the menstrual migraines) for this medication IUD!

Since no OBGYN believes me when I say I think it's the Mirena, I've began to think I was crazy and this was all in my head. So I started on the internet and all my symptoms sounded like MS. So I had thousands of dollars in testing including a full body MRI/MRA. Negative. Had ENT see me for the vertigo. Lots of tests. Negative. Anemic? No. Thyroid? Normal.

HOW MUCH MORE DO WE HAVE TO SPEND ON HEALTH CARE TO FIND OUT WE ARE "FINE" WHEN WE FEEL THE WORST WE'VE EVER FELT???

Then I found this site!!! I think it's the Mirena now! So I want to get it out. But then on the other hand, I feel SO GUILTY that my husband paid $900 for it and I only kept it 1 year. That's expensive birth control! But then again, all the tests, doctor's bills, and feeling lousy cost more! (Not to mention that my doctor cut my strings too short so we can't "check" them each month so to be certain that my IUD is in place he makes me get an ultrasound every 6 months for $250!!!)

My ONLY FEAR is that I will have this out and the symptoms WON'T go away and it was NOT the Mirena after all. Then I will have gone through the pain of putting it in, taking it out, and the cost of "throwing one away" and then what am I supposed to do? I'm 29 but in school and can't get pregnant for a few more years. I don't want to go back on the pill because the mood swings were terrible. But I never had migraines or anything on those, so why is the Mirena causing problems?

Any feedback or encouragement would be helpful right now. I need advise!

I have had Mirena for about a year now. My periods never really went away. They did used to be very heavy before my Mirena was inserted but I seem to bleed or have bloodlike discharge more like three weeks out of four now. I too have experienced sore cyst like acne on my chin which I have never had in my life, and it comes and goes and seems to be in one area. I have not felt like myself at times, as if theres a cloudiness, which has often times made me wonder if I am coming down with a terminal illness. No doubt it is just the effects of the Mirena since I have always been healthy. I have lost complete interest in sex and that was NOT like me, I even need lotion and it takes a lot to get me interested, and I do it only to make him happy now. I feel like a completely different person right now. I have never had a problem maintaining my weight and knew how to take off an extra 5 lbs like no one else but seems like even if I starve myself I have the added puffiness around my abdomen even if I suck it in. I have always been 120 or 125 on a bad day, since I was a teen even after having three kids. If I work out or even if I don't, but now after a year I am 130 on a bad day and 125 on a good day and as I said I have to try extremely hard to have the good day. I have less energy in the gym and my heart rate goes through the roof, it seems much harder to catch my breath. I blame my IUD. I have for the past two days experienced lower pelvic pain, behind my vaginal wall. Im pretty sure it is the Mirena. Doctors seem to keep telling you guys what they think to be true when with all due respect they should be more concerned about what the patients who are actually on this method are experiencing and with that information they really should have more research done on this before making an non educated guess.

My experience with Merena has been this. .. Some bad cramping here and there and lots of discharge. I am also more tired then I ever was before. I always want to sleep. Almost like the way I want to sleep when I am pregnant. That is how tired I feel!
As for the sex, my sex life has actually gotten better. I am on an anti-anxiety med that gave me little to no sex drive. Once I got the IUD my libido came back. I am also always bloated nomatter how little or much I eat. It is quite uncomfortable for me. Last time I went to the OBGYN she could not find the strings to the mirena so she sent me to get an ultrasound. The Mirena is still in but the strings are way up high. Does anyone know how they will get it out when it is time?

hi. everyone. I just had Mirena put in a week ago and already experiencing the dry skin, acne, losing my hair, feeling tired all the time, i just don't feel like myself. My blood pressure went up extremely high after i had my son and they put me on a pill made bp go into stroke range so my doctor suggested this. If i would have know how painful it was just to get the thing inserted i don't know if i would have gotten it. I am now on bp medicine and it is still elevated, i am still having discharge, which my doctor said would be normal but for how long?? Sex is sure not the same. My boyfriend doesn't complain but i sure can tell a huge difference. Its not even pleasurable anymore. What is really scary is my bp. I 20 yrs old and already have to take bp meds n it still hasn't gone down to a range that i am comfortable with. I honestly cant say if i will be able to keep this merena. I will be calling my doctor for the next appt available.
