Lots of gloom and doom here. Three years ago I took a generic form of Doxycycline for 4 weeks to treat bacterial prostatitis. I experienced no side affects except for a little mild nausea if taken on a totally empty stomach... I'm about to take it for an extended time as a Malarial Prophylaxis. 100 mg a day for 4 months. My doctor's say it shouldn't be a problem... I take no other medications..

This medication is deadly! I was prescribed 100mg twice a day for 2 weeks for a supposed pelvic infection (don't know yet if that's actually what I have - personally I don't think so). I took it for 6 and a half days (equals 13 pills) and when I found this website and read people's experiences I immediately quit. I experienced some mild nausea the first few days but didn't relate it to the Doxycycline. Then I noticed I was having more bowel movements than normal (5 in one day). I thought maybe I was eating too much fiber as I had increased my intact recently. Then on the 6th evening everything fell apart. I was panicking for no apparent reason; it was just washing over me in waves. My heart was racing and felt like it was going to pound right out of my chest. I barely slept that night because every time I drifted off I startled awake with my heart racing. My body felt weird but I don't know how to explain it; my feet were tingly. The next morning I got hit with diarrhea (I'm usually constipated). Then that whole day I was sobbing on and off throughout the day. I felt like I had hit rock bottom. I wanted to die but was trying to fight these thoughts. I thought I was going to go crazy and start screaming. That was yesterday. I did not take my evening dose then and today have not taken my morning dose and will never take it again. I managed to sleep during the night although my whole body was super tense. Today I am doing better already but am very nauseous. My stomach & back hurt a bit but I am not sure if it is because of the Doxycycline or not, because I have been having a lot of health problems lately. Looking back on the last week, I can see the other side effects I was having which included being really cold (which is totally unlike me and it's summer), occasional ringing in my ears, burning in my abdomen, mild headaches, dry lips, trembling, my face feels hot...I can't remember everything. The panic & depression was the worst. Don't take anti-anxiety meds or antidepressants to combat this. I have been on them and they make things worse -- withdrawal can take months and is hell-like. Just get off the Doxycycline.

ALERT!!!
If you have been having any one of these side effects, then AcipHex may be causing nerve damage.
-- tingling or numb hands or feet
-- confusion / "fuzzy head"
-- ringing in the ears
-- vision changes
-- anxiety
-- depression
-- apathy
-- fatigue
It may be serious. In my case it certainly is. I can barely use my hands. Why it happens:
AcipHex cuts down on stomach acid. Sometimes it cuts down too MUCH acid. In that case, you are unable to break down animal products enough to absorb vitamin B12 from it. Without vitamin B12, your nerve sheathing erodes. My advice would be to stop AcipHex and get a good vitamin B12 supplement (sublingual -- the type that dissolves underneath your tongue, and at least 1000 mcg). I would also advise to get the book -- Could It Be B12? By RN Sally Pacholock. Before starting supplements, insist on a urinary MMA test. It is the only B-12 test that does not give false positives or negatives often.
This book has literally saved my life.

My girlfriend has been taking Quasense for 6 weeks now. She went on it because her period was all whacked out. The first couple of days I noticed the Extreme Mood swings, and Severe Nausea in the morning. The Nausea went away after a week or so. She complained of being dizzy is uncomfortable with the acne she is getting and weight she has gained. She is getting depressed and feeling tired all the time. We are busy people always doing something, But she just doesn't have the energy anymore. As the weeks went by her moods are getting worse and she is having extreme stomach cramps and began spotting. Which shouldn't be happening for another two months. This Pill sucks. I'm tired of seeing her in so much discomfort.

Comparative Research Results:
SOURCE: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3684731 -- Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston 77550
“Results from both monitoring methods consistently indicated at least a 3-fold higher frequency of nausea or vomiting with doxycycline relative to the other antibiotics. Complaints of skin rash also were at least 4 times more frequent with doxycycline, depending on the particular sample.”
More: ******
There are all sorts of verified reported side effects, most of which were on the packing slip that came with my prescription. However, not all side effects are listed on the insert. I’ve come across depression and anxiety listed as side effects on other drug profiles for Doxycycline, so if they are among the symptoms you're experiencing, they very well may be due to the drug. My experience has served as a greaet reminder to research any pharmaceutical I put in my body so that I may make informed decisions.
Like many of you, apart from my current breakout from Doxy, I too experienced stomach upset, and, to a lesser degree, cranial pressure.
Be well. Cheers.

I'm so glad I found this site. I was prescribed doxy for a rash I got in the Dominican that they thought lead to some sort of infection. The first couple days were fine but one night I took the medication before bed and was up all night with the worst chest pains. I have been nervous ever since that when ever I take the pills I'm going to get the same reaction. I have had chest pains the past couple days and I've been really careful with what I take them with and have been making sure I drink at least two bottles of water with each pill. But today I feel so weak. The last week on the medication I've been so tired I want to take naps when I get home from work which is unusual for me. Today my head feels heavy and my leg feels like it's about to twitch but it doesn't. I've felt some tingling in my left leg and my left arm. I thought this was from whatever infection I had since the rash was on my left ankle, but I think it's from the doxy instead. I've also been feeling a dull pain in my thigh every once in a while. I normally have some anxiety but a couple days after I started the doxy I put myself into a panic and spent the entire day at work researching tropical diseases on the internet because I thought I had one from the rash. I've also had some shortness of breath. I have asthma but it feels nothing like that. Also the doxy made my birth control stop working and I started my period. I thought I just had bad cramps but I'm starting to think they were more stomach aches from the doxy. I've had diarrhea also. And I feel so light headed that I'm going to pass out but I don't. I'm definitely calling my doctor today to get a different antibiotic. Thanks everyone for your posts!

I am almost finished with my second week of starting Aviane, generic for Alesse which I was originally prescribed for. Before this I was on Yasmin for almost two years and never had a problem until this past December. I suddenly having some sort of anxiety attacks or something. I would get chest pressure, constricting throat as well as a lump and was feeling miserable as it would come at different times and unannounced. I had an EKG, chest x-ray and cat scan of my chest to make sure everything was fine and I didn't have clotting in my lungs- and everything came back perfectly normal. It's hard for me to say if my experiences are really anxiety or not, and if they were connected to the pill, as I didn't really give much of a break between Yasmin and Aviane. I don't feel so bad anymore, and occasionally I will have slight chest pressure or a strange feeling in my throat and that's all. However, with Aviane I've definitely noticed extreme bloating and I feel ten times as full after I've eaten a normal amount, and in the evenings I get an upset stomach and overall ill feeling, like mild nausea but no vomiting. I have appointments soon to have a thyroid ultrasound and to see an ear, nose and throat specialist. Other than that, I do plan on taking a break from birth control after I get my period just to see if my symptoms have simply been the pill all along.

Thanks to all of you for posting your experience with NuvaRing. I've decided to take it out after a week and a half of use. There is the possibility of my body becoming used to these hormones over time, but I can't take these side effects for one more day. I've never been a huge proponent of hormonal contraceptives after having been on the pill previously in my life, but now I am certain that it's not in my best interest -- especially this method! I must say that the physical side effects are much milder than those of the pill; no severe cramping like I've had in the past, only mild nausea. However, my mental state has been completely unbearable! I am a very active, cheerful, love every moment type of person. Of course I become moody and even bitchy from time to time, are we not women? =) This is different. I have been severly depressed to the point of demobilization and even suicidal thoughts. I knew that the ring may be a factor but I planned on just pushing through until these hormones worked with me. Now I see they are working against me, endangering my work, my relationships, and even my life. Totally not worth waiting to see if it may subside. I've lost my all my optimism, motivation, and rationality since inserting this foreign thing and I'm willing to blame it all on NuvaRing for the chance that my state of mind will return to normal. TAKE IT OUT and find another way.

I've had positive and negative side effects. The positive are I've had awesome sweet booty time since I've started the ring, I haven't gained weight (I've gained as much as 50 pounds on other birth controls just to lose that weight when I came off), less body hair, and my anxiety has pretty much cleared up (I've been taking a low dose of zoloft but have pretty much quit since I've been on nuvaring, except I'll take half when I start to have withdrawals).
The bad side effects are cramps (but those cleared up for me), a longer period (4 days, which isn't bad, but my normal period is only 1 to 2 days in length), headaches (which I've been getting every day), some mild nausea, lethargy, and I've been getting pimples all over my butt region!
I can't decide if it's worth it or not. I really like the pros but the headaches and super tiredness just aren't much fun.
Oh I've been craving sweets like crazy, too!
But, so far, Nuvaring has been not too bad for me. If the headaches don't ease up, I'm going to try pop's again and if I still have problems there, then I may try basal body temperature. Anybody know how effective BBT is?

I started Zoloft after my cat died (we put him to sleep & it was a terrible experience) and I had started having panic attacks. My doctor talked me into it despite my reluctance. After 4 days (with side effects of dizziness & mild nausea) I became violently ill during the night. I had started another unrelated medication with it and he assumed it was to blame, so he told me to come off both meds for a couple days, then start back on the zoloft. I did this and again 4 days later became violently ill. He acted annoyed with me and told me to stop taking it, he offered me another antidepressant to start after a few days. Well I waited to feel better, and waited and waited. Called him 3 weeks later to complain about the nausea/stomach upset. He told me to stop taking the new medicine- which I then told him I had never started b/c I was still too sick. He gave me an antacid and didn't give it a second thought. Then weeks later (still sick most all the time) I drank one beer and became violently ill once again. I went to see him immediately and got a pregnancy test (negative) and more antacids. My husband saw him later for a cold or something and when he mentioned my name my doctor became hostile. I am waiting to get an appointment with a new doctor, but now it has been 5 months and I'm still sick every day. I can't drink caffeine, or take any vitamins/ supplements for energy b/c I become so ill when I do. I was fine until I took the Zoloft. I can't find any other mention of something like this on the internet, but it seems so obvious that it started exactly when I started the Zoloft, I can't just dismiss it as a coincidence like my doctor seems to. Besides that he has done nothing to find out what this mysterious illness is or to stop it.

Began taking 500mg of niaspan after 81 mil of Bayer 30 minutes prior (at 11:00 in the am) about 3 weeks ago. Recommended at this time since I do enjoy my 2 glasses of red wine at night. I then take 10mg of Lipitor before bed. Side effects have been swollen lips that keep peeling, after many OTC lip balms, racing heart and unbelievable insomnia. Only had flushing the first day before nurse, not doctor, told me about aspirin. I don't know whether my allergic reaction is the Niaspan or the Lipitor. I also had mild nausea and foot cramps at night. The nausea has subsided but not my lip problem.
For one year prior to taking these drugs, I was on 10/40 of Vytorin but since all the negative results of that drug, my doctor has taken all his patients off of it.

Wow. I am glad I came across this site. I have been having weird headaches, heart pains/palpitations, mild nausea, and pains in my limbs. I felt crazy for going to my doctor about so many different things, but I have been on Yaz for three months now and have just "not felt right" for a while.
I spent 4 hours in the hospital today trying to figure out what was wrong with me, and they said everything turned up perfectly fine, but I STILL DON'T FEEL GOOD at all. So Thanks to this I have decided to quit taking the pill to see if i feel any better. I am shocked at how dangerous of a drug this appears to be. Thank you everyone.

HI i tried zoloft with a great amount of doubt, but it has actually been really good. For the first week or two, i had insomnia but that soon passed, and for a couple of days i felt mildly nauseous. My anxiety has definitely lifted, and my relationship has improved significantly , we are now getting married in 6 month!
I didn't gain weight due to the drug, and I am not overweight at all, but I do suffer from binge eating disorder. Don't know if zoloft helped with that aspect, but now I've just been put on Yaz (birth control), and noticed a slight loss of appetite. It this continues, this could be the answer to all my problems. So fingers crossed. With Yaz, also, insomnia and mild nausea for a couple of days, but I figure that could be my body getting used to the drugs.

I took Doxy for about 2 weeks as a remedy for a bump on my eyelid. This first exposure to Doxy seemed only to cause a little skin sensitivity and burning in my fingers, no big deal.
When my eye problem didn't go away, my eye doctor prescribed Doxy for a second time a month later. This time my side effects were much different. Within a couple hours of taking my first pill I felt a bit off, I felt anxious and unsettled. I Continued on the medication for a total of five days. During this time my side effects progressively worsened. The first few days I had very abstract thoughts, and began feeling strangely claustrophobic. By day three I was beginning to feel paranoid and fearful over just simple everyday things. Day five is when it all hit the fan. I started having difficulty breathing and feeling extreme tightness in my chest. My feelings of claustrophobia had also worsened to the point where I began having panic attacks, like I was trapped inside my own body. It was at this point I made a desperate attempt to search the internet for a possible cause, in hopes it might be the Doxy medication I was on. I was somewhat relieved to find this website and read that others had similar symptoms, maybe I wasn't losing my mind. I immediately quit taking the medication, but unfortunately the symptoms didn't go away for several more days. That night I was unable to sleep, I had mild nausea, and would wake up in the middle of the night in a panic and would shake uncontrollably. Lovely huh. It gets worse. I began to feel extreme fear and paranoia like I was going to die, or lose my kids and family. I began to feel if this didn't go away, I would not be able to go on. Thank God it did, and by day eight the extreme thoughts began to subside. I continued to have the breathing difficulty and mild depression for several days after, but the worst was over. Within a month I was back to normal.
I write this as a warning to those who are taking this med and feel anything close to this... stop taking it! I am a healthy, normal, 40 year old male, that has no history of mental issues, other than a "blue" day from time to time, and within six days I was entertaining thoughts of suicide. The psychological side effects of this drug NEED to be addressed. This is very serious stuff!!!!!!! Though it may be a small percentage of people that are susceptible, for those who are, it is a deep dark hole.

I have been taking Yaz for the last 2 months and 1 week. The first and second month I had mild nausea. In the third month I am having a lot more problems, and I don't know if it's the Yaz or something really weird happening to me. My hands and arms will twitch uncontrollably, I feel very groggy, hazy, can't concentrate, and slightly dizzy. I still have the nausea, but that's the least of it. Also, I seem to be in a very bad mood, possibly because I feel like crap, but it seems like my mood is even worse than my actual symptoms if that makes sense.

Our daughter spent her 21st birthday in ICU, Sunday the 13th. I took her to the ER with shortness of breath, chest pain and nausea on Saturday afternoon. She has been on Yaz since February with only the mild symptoms of: loss of apetite, mild nausea and some abdominal cramping. She was put on this BC to regulate her periods and relieve menstrual pain as well as excessive dark facial hair growth. All 3 of these were relieved by Yaz.
She has now spent 1 week in the hospital (2 days in ICU) and will be on coumadin for 3 to 6 months due to a very large pulmonary embolism (size of my knee cap) that was putting the right side of her heart in distress. She also has multiple clots in her right lung.
I am shocked to read through this website and see all that has happened to so many women. She can never take oral BC again in her life. There are no blood test results that indicate she was even predisposed to this type of reaction and is not family history.

Wow! Seems as if I'm one of many, many folks with Doxycycline issues. Was prescribed it for symptoms arising from a bad tick bite. Now, in my 5th day of a 10-day course, I have the crushing exhaustion, the mild nausea, the sudden hot flashes and sweats (I didn't even get those during an unmedicated menopause), the aches, the muzzy, on-another-planet head symptoms. I'm thinking that the side effects are better than, say, Lyme or Tularemia – but whew! This has been a stark realization that even if you're a "good patient", even if you read everything that's given to you in connection with a drug, you're still not getting even half the story. And doctors in this managed care world certainly aren't going to tell us. Thanks to everyone who has shared info on this site!

I have been on Femcon for just about 1 year and have had relatively few symptoms throughout this time. I occasionally get severe headaches and mild nausea but the last 2 months, I have not gotten my period when i was supposed to and i am concerned. My last active pill falls on a Sunday and I normally get my period the following Wednesday (2-3 days later). Last month I did not get my period at all. I took 3 home pregnancy tests because, naturally, I freaked out thinking that I was pregnant, and I went to see my gyn who also confirmed that I was not pregnant. I started a new pack of pills on time hoping that I would get my period this month and that last month was just a fluke but alas... still no period! I plan on taking another pregnancy test later today to confirm that I am not pregnant because not only am i very diligent about taking my pill on time each day, but my boyfriend and I religiously use condoms as a backup, despite my being on the pill. Has anyone else had an experience similar to this??

I've been yasmin for about 1 1/2 years now (I'm 21). Going to the doctor tomorrow to see if I can switch to something else. I feel horrible. I used to be pretty happy, pretty active. For the past 4 months I've been depressed. anxious, paranoid, upset, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. At first maybe I thought I was just having mental stress. But I feel bad for my boyfriend now. I've been very down and hard on myself, and I just can't stop. I thought I would be able to control it, but it doesn't work that way. I know it's yasmin because it was something that finally clicked. I also noticed that my hair as thinned out a lot in the past year.

I have been on Prozac 20 mg for 2 full months now. During the first few weeks I had a loss of appetite and some mild nausea. Having a few crackers would nip that in the bud. It wasn't a big deal at all. Both symptoms have ceased now. I feel happy and energetic. I think it's a great medication.. I was prescribed this med due to depression caused by my method of birth control. It's been very successful for me...

I have only been on lithium carbonate - 500 mg a day - for a month now, but experience no side effects, other than the mild nausea I experienced during the first two weeks of treatment and which has now stopped. I feel much better, like a sane person for the first time in many years. Make no mistake, BPD is a really shitty brain disorder, there are no benefits from it whatsoever. Even when you are on an "up" with BPD it's delusional. You think you are doing great work or whatever, but that's just your own mistaken impression. With BPD you so doubt yourself, not only when you are on a low but also when you think you are on a high, that you become depressed and furiously angry, because you know there is something not right with you. This anger and self disgust feeds the disease even more. I feel more motivated and less angry on lithium carbonate. One of the masks that BPD wears is Narcissistic personality disorder. Things that cooking and cleaning up are beneath you. These days I quite like cooking a nice meal, and have no objection to cleaning up any mess, as long as I created most of it in the first place. Hell, if i continue to feel this good about myself, I might even volunteer for a soup kitchen. You don't find many Narcissists there!
I was told to take 250g morning and evening, but find I function better when I take a double dose in the morning.
Is my hair going to fall out eventually? I don't know. I don't really care all that much, as I never had great hair in the first place, and tend to wear wigs which are very close to my own hairstyle - few people can tell the difference, other than commenting on how great my hair looks when I wear a wig. You can look quite pretty in bandanna style scarves too, you know.

I started taking Aviane last week. Before that, I'd been on nothing for six months, and before that I was on NuvaRing for six months. I was prescribed birth control because I have really bad hormonal acne that nothing else fixes. I stopped taking the NuvaRing because it make me feel slightly brain dead lethargic?) and very depressed (but my skin looked great!). Anyway, Aviane. I feel really, really good. Normally, I'm sort of depressed and I have a lot of mood swings throughout the month, but all this week I have felt startlingly sane. I can think clearly, my emotions are totally under control. My husband has even noticed! I really hope this isn't just an early side effect! On the down side, I have constant mild nausea, some trouble sleeping, and it makes me feel kind of sleepy. I'm going to try taking it before bed and see if that helps. Also, I may be having trouble sleeping because I've been drinking more coffee than usual during the day. I have not experienced any weight gain yet, also a good sign, since I usually blow up within the first week or two.

I haven't read through every single one of these but out of the couple of dozen I have, it seems like all of the issues are with the Lactase enzyme in concentrated pill form. I'm just curious if anyone has experienced these same violent side effects with the Lactaid milk. I've been using the milk for several weeks now and admittedly do experience some VERY mild nausea that I can almost certainly attribute to the Lactaid milk. Otherwise though, I have to say I have not had any of the violent pains and vomiting many others here have complained of.
I'm just wondering if it's not only the enzyme that's causing the problems but could it possibly be the actual process of the enzyme converting the Lactose sugar in the body that is causing the side effects. I'm just kind of thinking(typing) out loud here but........ I wonder if many of you who have complained about these violent symptoms would actually experience them with drinking the Lactaid milk vs. taking the pills. Only because with the milk, the process of the enzyme converting the Lactose has already occurred.
Would anybody be willing to give this a shot just to see if there would be a difference?
