I had the Mirena Coil fitted 4 months ago and since then I have suffered 2 infections. I suffer with severe endometriosis and had a liter of blood removed from my last ovarian cyst, which, I've been told is growing back again. I thought this coil was supposed to improve things, but alas, sadly, that's not the case...It feels like I can actually physically feel it inside of my uterus. I am 36 and don't have kids, therefore had to be put under general anesthetic when the damn thing was inserted, had horrific headaches and abdominal pain since and I'm told this is the best protection I have for my condition!?! I don't know what it is that's making my system dislike it so much, scans show it's not displaced, it's just, for some reason, not agreeing with me, maybe I need a little more time to adjust, but it feels like I have an alien device sitting inside of me and it's hurting instead of helping...any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated!!!

The mirena coil has destroyed my relationship. At the beginning my partner told me he could feel it and it hurt us both. But when i told the doctor he said my partner was making it up as it is not possible to feel it. Im made to feel like a liar, and im sick and tired of them lying to me. I get sharp stabbing pain all the time, every day where the coil is. Sometimes i can not sit down as it hurts so much. I have no sex drive, i also get this weird pain at the top of my left leg near the fallopian tube. I bleed almost everyday and have constant cramps. Which is causing my spine to curve, due to not been able to sit up properly. My partner has left me as it has been going on for 3 years. I can not even begin to start a new relationship as sex is very painful and i bleed heavily afterwards, which lasts for weeks. I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos vascular syndrome. And the hormones that are in the mirena coil react to my condition and i shouldn't be having the this coil. But my Dr refuses to take it out. I am deeply depressed by this as my life has been ruined by the mirena. I also suffer with headaches and i burn up and i start to sweat quite bad. Which can be very embarrassing. I didn't really want the mirena but i was pushed into by my doctors, as they thought they knew best. I told them that it wasn't recommended as i have EDVS. But they don't care what i think. I have begged for them to take it out but they will not do it. Im at my wits end as i don't know what to do anymore. I am 33 years old with a disable son to look after. And it can interfere with me looking after him as the pain gets too much. I want it out and i want my life back before i have no life left! Ladies please do your homework before making any choices. Dr's are not super human and they do not know everything. They are only human and make mistakes just like anyone else.

i recently had my second mirena coil fitted. the first was fitted as i had severe pms and very heavy prolonged periods. the coil worked for this - i have not had a period for over four and a half years. the gynae doctor thought it a good idea to replace it as i could possibly start to menstruate again if i didn't have it, he also thought it possible the pms would return.
i am 53 and the coil was "overdue" for replacement by about 3 months. i have had ibs for years but have had a lot more problems over recent years, my doctor puts it down to stress (he has done other tests this year - all fine, apart from a slightly high blood sugar level he was not over concerned about).
the few months leading up to the coil change were almost ibs free. could this be because the hormone had "run out" ??
since having the second mirena fitted 3 weeks ago i have felt awful. i am bloated to the point where i look pregnant, i am having to take fybogel again every day as i was so constipated, and although the fybogel is working for that, the bloating continues and i feel really nauseous on and off all day, and constantly full and have little appetite.
i am wondering if the coil is responsible as my gp can see no other cause apart from stress. could it be that my body no longer "wants" this hormone? is it worse this time because of my age?
it was also extremely painful having the second coil fitted - it was def not that bad the first time.
i never ever put the ibs down to the coil before, but some kind of instinct made me look my symptoms up on the net today and i was shocked to think that i may be feeling so rough now (and had increased ibs over the past few years) because of the mirena.
i am seriously considering visiting the clinic on Tuesday to ask to have it removed.
does anyone have any advice?

This website is a joke! After I had my Mirena inserted 4 months ago I started reading on the internet about possible side effects. I was furious with myself that I hadn't Read up on this before the appointment. There were so many horrible reviews involving hair loss, weight gain, acne, and mood swings! I was so scared and actually thought about removing the Mirena that week. I then found multiple reviews on websites not owned and operated by other drug companies that are trying to scare people in order to prevent the sale and use of the Mirena and the side effects listed here were a 180 degree difference. I have not experienced any weight gain, in fact, I recently was able to shed 5 pounds from picking up running again (so it is possible to LOSE weight on the Mirena as well). I have had zero hair loss, have not had a pimple anywhere or any random hair growth. My live in boyfriend and I have discussed if we've noticed any mood swings or changes and my mood which is usually optimistic and positive has been the same since I had the Mirena inserted. My periods are much lighter and although they can last an extra day or two more than what I was used to, they are light and I have not had any cramping. I'm writing this review not because I absolutely love the Mirena, I think it's a fine form of BC but who LOVES their BC, isn't it all kind of a pain. The Mirena is by far the most convenient form of birth control and I don't worry at all about missing a day and the chance of getting pregnant. I'm writing this review because I encourage everyone to talk more with their doctors about the side effects and look around on the internet for REAL websites.

Hi, i'm 24 and i've had my mirena coil fitted now for over a year. I have been experiencing cramps, bleeding, headaches, tiredness, dizziness and aches in my legs but never thought anything of it. Until now when my cramps are severe in my tummy and lower back. I can describe them as a few things, labor pains, severe period pains and also appendicitis pain. its not my appendix, as I had it taken out years ago. I recently went to my GP who advised that I have a pregnancy test just to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which came back negative. She advised that I should take regular paracetamol for the pain and see how I go. But they don't seem to disappear. I now have the same cramps but now also my bum area as well as my tummy area and lower back when I go to toilet whether for a number 1 or number 2, and it is excruciating which makes me cry. I also recently had intercourse with my partner, and the cramps came back with a vengeance, and i was in so much pain, i almost called an ambulance. I have no idea as to what I think it is until I started writing my symptoms into the internet and came back that it may be my mirena coil. I never thought anything of it at first, but after reading other peoples side effects of the coil i'm beginning to wonder. Some people are saying that the coil had pierced there uterus and infected their ovaries, and they suffered with the same side effects that I am experiencing. I am scared as to what I think it may be, in case my coil has done the same. I have also noticed that i cannot feel my coil strings but at the same time I have not experienced any bleeding. Could anyone give me advice. Thank you N.

I’m 25 and I’m from the UK
I have been suffering from the Gynae condition Endometriosis for the past 14 years. I have tried virtually every contraceptive Pill / Injections/ Coil / Hormone tablets/ Patches / Implants going, I’ve had various surgeries and none of these have made the slightest improvement in my condition. I can experience anything from 2 – 6 periods in a 4week period and the pain is there on a daily basis, interfering in my everyday life
On recommendation from my Gynae consultant he suggested that I give the Mirena Coil another go, I had one first fitted when I was 17years old for the same condition and to be honest after the initial first few weeks of bleeding and slight pain I found it made a huge improvement, It completely stopped my periods and I was no longer in any pain and for once was seeing some normality in my life...that is until 2years into having it the Mirena decided to dislodge itself and imbed itself into the surrounding tissue and I had to have it surgically removed. So this time around when my consultant suggested that I give it another go I was a little skeptical after what happened last time but the fact that I have tried virtually everything going to try to help and nothing has worked I decided to give it another go, after all it did improve my condition last time, even though it did make me very ill at the end when it moved.
So I had the Mirena fitted just under a month ago now and I seriously wish I had not bothered, I am in more pain that I was with just the endometriosis pain, I’ve been bleeding really heavily ever since it was inserted, I am extremely moody and temperamental, My appetite has virtually disappeared yet I seem to be gaining weight around the mid drift area, I keep suffering from headaches which I rarely usually get and sickness and I’ve been experiencing these fluttering like sensations which remind me very much like the feelings I had when I was pregnant with my son but a pregnancy test showed negative so I don’t have a clue what that is. My skin and hair are also suffering as they seem to become increasingly greasy much quicker than usual and I’ve started to get patches of acne which I never even suffered from when I was growing up as a teenager.
Reading through all of your posts and the similarities in side effects I’m very much convinced that its the coil causing all of them and I am seriously considering getting it removed

After posting on here last week, have since had the mirena removed yesterday.my mood today is greatly improved however my reason for ths posting is that when i rang to arrange the removal, had to convince both the nurse and doctor to agree to take it out!
my gp who knows my history and that i suffered with post natal depression commented that he"thought it would work the opposite way "for my depression.i feel i was used as a guinea pig and the last six week iv lived through hell.
Although not pleasant to have it removed, feel it was the best thing to have done and am now happy in the fact that i have a iud fitted as before with no problems.
The most concerning aspect of this whole situation was i that i was never told of these side effects.when i asked both the nurse and gp at appointment yesterday both denied the effects i had suffered with it.I was told that probably only one in ten woman had any side effects therefore i can only assume that a large numbers of woman have the mirena coil fitted.
I urge you to take note of the posts on site and most def not have a mirena coil in i almost lost my sanity, health and family because i took professional advice at face value and now wished i had found this forum beforehand!!!!

I am a 35 year old mum of 2 girls,my youngest being almost 4 month old, previous to having my baby had the non hormone coil fitted with great success and no problems.and following my midwifes advice had the mirena coil fitted after much discussion with both my doctor and nurse thought it was my best option as no other contraceptive suited as well as the coil.however having the morena coil in for the past 5 weeks have suffered from an almost constant brown smelly discharge, weight gain, painful joints, lack of energy and mood changes.after researching the mirena found all the symptoms id been having are fairly common place.after contacting my GP speaking to both the nurse and GP have convinced them to take it out and fit a non hormone coil.
at no time upto or since was i told of the side effects,in particular depression from which i suffered from the birth of my daughter which the same doctor who convinced me the mirena was perfect for me prescribed me thae anti depressants i needed to beat my post-natal depression.
i find it utterly astounding that something which claimed to be the answer could be prescribed for me.im not saying the mirena isn't for some, but it def wasn't for me and before you consider having one fitted do your research before you have one fitted.

I am 45 and had the device inserted in June. Since then I have had an annoying constant red-brown discharge and my period three times. My menstrual cramps are definitely greatly lessened but what is freaking me out (apart from the discharge) is the anxiety I am experiencing for no reason. I am also feeling depressed. I am greatly concerned as being on the pill many years ago I had a mild stroke and my doctor assured me that the hormones ion the Mirena stay in the uterus. Why then the sudden anxiety attacks? I have always been a really laid-back person - I can only relate this sudden appearance of anxiety to the Mirena - it started about two weeks after I had it inserted.

I am now debating whether to ride it out - has anyone had the anxiety subside?

i had a mirena coil fitted in jan 2008 and was told in august 2008 that it had fallen out . I decided to go back on the pill that i had been on for years without any problems. And yet i have had nothing but problems since , with all the symptoms that have been mentioned on here . Rapid weight gain, cramps , exhaustion, bloated stomach, pains , headache, mood swings, acheing etc etc ! would this still be from the coil that so say fell out a year ago ?

...I am not taking any birth control, BUT i discovered this website on behalf of my best friend who's had Mirena for a little over 6, maybe 7 months now...Personally i Dont' trust any birth controls - other than condoms :-) why ? Guess i Just don't trust the Industry...it appears to me, that the only extensive Tests done on birth control are the ones done to make sure Ladies don't conceive...AnyWay, my BF's side effects include UTI's, stomach aches & cramps, yeast infections; I'd even say her mood has been effected by Mirena....she tells me & may i add we hide nothing from each other; she's had no issues w/UTI's or yeast infections before the insertion of Mirena...I worry about her. She wants to have another kid & i don't want this birth control messing up her body...just Last Week she told me: Out of noWhere - began to bleed heavily w/no pain w/heavy clotting....I keep telling her its the BC, but in her words, "it's just so convenient." did i spell that right ?....i know this BC is easy and effective & now i see all these harsh side effects it brings...A friend of my sister's complained of an Odor down there....I'll be telling my BF about all of u Ladies experiences w/Mirena...I know the reason why she & other women would get Mirena, but i don't want her or any other woman 2 suffer, or loss hair, or gain weight, or acquire cyts OR any of those things when it can be avoided....and of course your doctor will Tell u how great & safe it is....that's their job, its just unfortunate that their job isn't 2 tell us the truth !

Ladies,

I hope you don’t mind a male posting on this forum but I do have a reason for doing so. I am a Coroner’s Officer in England. I will not at this time disclose whereexactly I am based as I need to protect the identity of the family. I would however like to use you as a sounding board in the hope that you can help me, help the family and perhaps, just perhaps, I can help you.

Sadly I am dealing with a suicide. The lady in question, who has taken her own life is in her 40’s, married and has children (all over 11 years). The lady has no history what so ever of any form of depression during her life.

The lady has described her life as being perfect with a family that loves her and who she loves in return and as the Investigator I believe she is truthful in that comment. She states she has been extremely happy until last week. She makes comments of - I am just very ill, cannot sleep, feel dizzy, cannot concentrate, sometimes lose my vision, feel sick all the time and sweat at night. She cannot understand, but it makes her feel bad. I am not myself, something has made me ill which means I can’t be my normal positive, active busy self. I can’t bring myself to do anything that I normally love, like gardening, cooking etc. I am losing my memory badly going fuzzy in the head.

Her final comment, which is the one that has prompted me to post on this forum (with the permission of the family) is ‘I just don’t understand this – I’m so sorry . I can’t understand myself or what is wrong with me or what I’m doing so sorry. Just remember I’m not myself somebody else has taken over – I don’t know if it is all the anti-histamine pills that has mixed up my chemical balance along with the Mirena coil or is it just me’.

The mention of the Mirena coil has therefore prompted me to investigate it. I am not, by any means suggesting that this is responsible but it would be wrong of me to discount it after having read the posts on this forum and other places on the Internet.

The lady in question had the coil inserted in 2004/5 and it would appear that there were no problems or side effects reported.

I am therefore looking for some help from you. Some comments on what I have posted etc. Some advice on where to obtain expert advice (although I am trying some avenues of my own).

I may also ask, depending on what help you can give me if you would be willing to identify yourself to me.

Thank you

P.

Hi
I've read quite a few of these listings and i think most of you are from the USA, I'm from the UK and had my Mirena Coil fitted last November and since then I have still had bleeding every 2 weeks like I was before (although not as heavy), I have had awful tummy pain whilst bleeding, my mood swings are awful and the worst of all is that I have completely lost my sex drive which seems to be a common occurrence with us women using this type of birth control.

I'm 42 and have finished having children (I'm actually sterilized so can't have anymore) and had the coil fitted so that it would stop the continual bleeding as it was making me so ill. But it hasn't stopped it at all. Next week I go to see my consultant to see how I have been getting on over that 7 months or so with this coil, and the first thing I will do is to ask him to remove the coil as I want to get back to normal and get my marriage back on track. The second thing I will ask him is to have it all removed completely as been as I don't want and can't have anymore children anyway. I wish I had done this in the first place, but being only 41 at the time, the Consultant wanted me to try other things first.

My advice to anyone would be to give it a try see if it works for you as it does actually work for some women I work with so its just not completable for my body. But please please please don't leave it years before thinking about getting it removed if it doesn't work for you. You know withing the first 6 months whether it will or not, its not going to get any better if it hasn't worked by then.

I'll keep you all posted as to what my Consultant agrees to do next week.

Keep healthy and happy.

Hi all
I had my second mirena coil fitted 2 months ago. My first one that I had for 5 years I thought agreed with me - however now I am having second thoughts. My reasons for looking on this website were that I seem to have become very low, tired and have bouts of being very snappy and intolerant. A few of my friends have noticed the change in me. No idea where the placid happy go lucky J. has gone? My appetite has grown as have i a few pounds. I have also started become over anxious about things! If there were reasons for this I wouldn't be concerned but life is great at the moment!

I don't have any of the other side effects I have read about on this site, however over the years I get bouts of sore tonsils and a horrible metallic taste, at same time feel very drained. Had every test under the sun plus allergy tests all to no avail - Has this occurred with anyone else?

J.

I had my Mirena Coil taken out 6 weeks ago, i had it put in in 2005 - it has been the most horrific four years of my life, i have never been to the Doctors so much as i have in these years, in fact i was so poorly i gave up working due to illness in September 2008. I had horrific abdomen pain, swelling of the stomach, but most of all the lower back pain and not being able to walk properly, just a shuffle most days, which in turn affected me mentally (i used to be a fitness fanatic). The list is too long to mention, but these last few months when i went to see my GP (even when i went to see a specialist) i always asked the question - ARE YOU SURE THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MIRENA COIL? The answer was always NO!. How wrong they were, I insisted my Dr took it out (to his annoyance) it took three good pulls to get it out, oh my God the pain, it was embedded in me. within 24 hours there was an improvement in my back, needless to say i'm still suffering but not to the extent that i was.

IF YOU FEEL/EXPERIENCE ANYTHING ABNORMAL FOR YOU OR DO NOT FEEL QUITE YOURSELF SEE YOUR G.P./NURSE AND SERIOUSLY CONSIDER GETTING THE MIRENA COIL REMOVED
This medication may be suitable for some people but if you experience any of the following, I urge you please, please please, 'demand' that you want the Mirena removed. My symptoms were noticeably worse around my time of ovulation. I've also found out that people previously treated for/suffering from depression should not be prescribed this medication. (I've been on Prozac in the past). I had it fitted in Aug 2007 to combat very heavy periods and severe PMT at the recommendation of my G.P.and had it removed Sept 2008. Symptoms I experienced :-

Dry/furry mouth
Headaches (over time these became migraines)
No concentration
Poor memory
Lethargy (constantly tired and drained)
Smelly discharge (still noticeable straight after washing)
Very heavy legs
Numbness in my legs
Joint pain and clicking (mainly in my shoulders and knees)
Developed facial hair (mainly under chin and jawline)
Hair loss
Weight gain around my stomach (without increasing my food intake)
Feeling constantly bloated.
Spotting randomly for duration of Mirena being fitted. (Brown spotting)

Panic Attacks ( awoken in the middle of the night with them) escalating to the following:-
Palpitations (for no apparent reason)
Clammy/sweating palms and feet
Aggitation ( during an episode if someone was talking to me I wanted to really yell at them 'Just shut the **** up! You're doing my head in!)
Feelings of madness (actually wanted to run away from my own mind)
Pins and needles/Tingling in my hands and feet
Electric shock like surges going through my body (my nerve endings were obviously suffering)
Muscle tremours/shaking (mainly arms and legs)
Eyes became extremely light sensitive
Heightened awareness of sound

Insomnia
Terrible nightmares
Depression
Feelings of detachment from the real world.
Visual disturbances
Episodes of blurred vision

These symptoms did not appear straight away but appeared gradually and with more veangance the longer I had the coil. The more concerning episodes I experienced happened after about 3 months and very erratically. I could not predict when or what time of day I was going to have an episode or pinpoint any reason for bringing on an attack. I had no control over the effects, was absolutely petrified when I experienced a panic attack and just had to ride it out.
All my G.P. did was prescribe me anti-depressants to which I reacted badly. Blood tests also failed to show anything abnormal.
I even tried herbal medicines as an alternative and experienced similar reactions to the prescription drugs. I've now become very pill-phobic and would rather ride out and get over symptoms myself. Paracetamol & Ibuprofen being the only medicine I trust to take now. I had a horrendous year and everyone suffered. Not only my family, but I was signed off of work for 3 months. It was a very worrying time for my husband and my children, who all had to keep an eye on me and witness the effects of my symptoms. On looking back now, I don't know how I managed to function at all and even do my job. Most of the time my energies were spent concentrating on trying to appear normal and held-together to the outside world.
Although I feel 100% better in myself, I noticeably experience more migraines and headaches than I ever did in the past, along with palpitations, usually during my week before. Two days before it I often really feeI like I'm losing the plot! I also really bloat up now a week before my period, feel sick and have a feeling of being ' very full', so am hungry but don't really want to eat. One of my big toe-nails has gone black over the past few months and not through injury. This has just been sent away for analysis. The one on the other foot is raised/ridged/thick/yellow, but normal growth has resumed half-way up now, which I feel co-incides with the state of my health on having Mirena removed. The nurse I saw recently explained that it is true that nails and hair show the history of our health so, for me, this would seem true.
I wish I'd been made fully aware of all possible side-effects of this medication and am now actually concerned that the effects I've suffered may have left some permanent damage.
In spite of all this, it's so good to be me.

I'm 42, I had the Mirena coil fitted February 2008, due to 'disfunctional bleeding.' Although it has stopped the constant bleeding, I suffer from terrible joint pain, which I never did before, especially my hips, knees and ankles. Weight gain, which in turn is making me miserable, lots of vaginal infections, itchy and tender breasts, along with palpitations.....I think I'd rather live with the 'disfunctional bleeding!'

hi.
i am so glad i have found this site. i was trying to make a decision wether to have my mirena coil taken out as i have had it in nearly three years and all the symptoms i have been having i thought it was me,
stomach ache, forgetfulness, sore boobs, depression, anxiety, moodiness, oh need i go on...
well i had my coil in 1st time around 5 years ago( about) and i thought it was great because i have unbearable heavy periods i cant go anywhere, well they went to nil, which i was very happy about, then i got pregnant.....had to make the decision of wether to risk having the coil out or leaving in either way can cause miscarriage, i had it taken out very carefully by a wonderful doctor.
my daughter is now three which i call my miracle baby.
i had it put in again because of my periods.. and even tho i don't have them i am regretting it cause im suffering so bad, Monday im having it out and looking forward to getting my body back to normal,,, i do however need a contraception, for my periods and obviously i don't want to get pregnant right now. so i don't know what to choose... i had the pill in the past got pregnant with my son!!!! so what d i do?> ill report back Monday when i have had it out (hopefully)thanks to everyones stories they have really helped me at least i know why im a moody cow

I have had my Mirena for about nearly 8 years now and have been experiencing all of the below listed side effects. Headaches, Blurred Vision, Dizziness, Back Aches, , Hair thinning, Mood Swings, Loss of Sex Drive, and the newest thing.my option picked up some worrying eye problems.
I have been to a specialist and he wants me to have an urgent cat scan
I have seen that this problem he thinks it is pseudotumour cerebri but can not rule out the dreaded brain tumor. On reading up about pseudotumour have found it connected to the Mirena coil.I put the other problems down to pre menopause or just a problem with my contact lens/prescription needing renewing.
Anybody have any thoughts or experience of this?

I had the Mirena coil fitted in Dec 06. For 12 months, I had horrid slutchy loss P.V but no actual periods. I had increase in spots, all along my jawline and hairline and cheeks....acne at 45!! Something I'd never had as a teenager. My weight has gained because I'm always, always hungry and seem to have lost my appetite control button. My breasts are constantly tender and feel enormous like just before a period or in early pregnancy. I am so, so tired. I find myself nodding off at 5pm even when I've had a really good previous nights' sleep. My energy is zilch. I feel tearful and run down despite eating well and taking vitamin supplements. Is it the Mirena? My doctor has said "No!". The only way to find out is have it removed, return to heavy periods and suck it and see! However, if I don't have it out, I fear I may reach 15 stone!! (went from 9st 9lbs to 11st 4lbs in 2 yrs).

Hi.
I had the Mirena fitted 4.5 years ago, due to suffering from very heavy periods.
I had my Mirena coil removed two days ago, along with having a smear done. I had a bit of spotting that day after the removal and smear test.
Yesterday, I had a bit to stomach ache and bleeding.
Today, I have experienced constant stomach pain, not like normal period pain, but it is constant, feeling a bit like dragging inside and similar to trapped wind (which I know it is not). Also, I have heavy bleeding, not flooding, but very heavy.
I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything similar to the above when having the Mirena removed.
Thanks LW1501

Since having a laparoscopy in Dec 2008 for endometriosis and having the Mirena Coil inserted then, i have felt worse than before my surgery. My periods have stopped but it is a big price to pay given that i now suffer from depression, detachment, tiredness, intense nausea, joint pain, dizziness and cramping. I find that the fault lies with not only having a foreign object in my body but also having an imbalance of hormones not intended by nature. I am going to remove this thing and place the trust, instead, in my body.

Hi
I did find that life with the MIRENA coil got better as time went on... I had mine from about 4 years ago and had it took out jan 15th 09. A few problems at first, agony putting it in, unable to drive home, my partner had to come and get me. Thats the main reason I didn't get it taken out because it was agony for days! Then I had the terrible acne and weight gain, periods stopped, and no sex drive. But these did go away and it was fine after about 6 months.
I was told that fertility returns to normal right away... but that doesn't seem to be true, I have not had a period yet so was a bit worried, looking at this site and others, it seems periods can be slow to restart and irregular after that. Has anyone else experienced delay in periods starting again after the Mirena was took out? Would be good to hear about this so I don't keep worrying about this.
