Oh and btw...I am a 46 year old female, originally diagnosed with MVP (mitral valve prolapse) and ectopic atrial tachycardia at the age of 25 1/2 years old. I am getting ready to start nursing school in 2 weeks and really don't want to deal with all this crap, as school will be all I can handle. Thanks for listening to me. :)

I was prescribed Toprol for an irregular heart rhythm (eventually diagnosed as premature ventricular contractions) that developed suddenly when I was 54, despite an active lifestyle, low-normal weight (110), low stress levels, and low blood pressure (100/60). I felt as though my heart was skipping beats, and the "catch-up" beat was so strong my entire chest seemed to vibrate. The Toprol stopped 98 percent of the PACs virtually immediately. But within days I noticed occasional numbness in my legs, and my hands and feet turn icy cold for no obvious reason. I'm also quite tired till late afternoon (I take the Toprol around 10 p.m.), and I just feel "blah." No suicidal, but generally unmotivated. I am often sleepy--at least until around 1 or 2 p.m, when the Toprol starts to wear off. I'm not ready to stop taking it yet--though these reports are sobering--because the PACs made a normal life impossible. But I'm going to be cautious, and if other side effects appear, look for other options.

I'm 56 y/o with hx of MVP,SVT and was on Inderal for 23 yrs. until after taking RED BULL energy drink threw me to AFIB that sent me to ER and got admitted overnight ,that problem got resolved until about few months ago i started having on and off palpitations again and my doctor put me on 50mg METOPROLOL and take extra dose for frequent palpitations but i noticed that the more i take METOPROLOL the worst my symptoms gets with some dizziness, sleepless nights ,occasional chest pains, joint pains so i went to my doctor again ,had stress test, 24 hr. monitor, and everything was normal, i was then referred to a Cardiologist-Electrophysiologist who told me i was taking to much Metoprolol that i should cut it to 25mg , He planned to put me on 30 day holter monitor to see the activity of my heart but on the other hand being a nurse i tried to monitor myself, i still have the same symptoms but less since i cut down my dose but i decided to stop the Metoptolol completly and put myself back on Inderal for about a week now i'm telling you it was alike a night and day symptoms of increasing palpitations are less and i feel much better , hopefully i treated myself and goodbye Metoprolol.

Hi- I was on Lopressor 50mgs. twice a day for my slightly elevated BP, MVP, SVT, palpitations, and anxiety attacks. Started having some intermittent chest pain (not bad, just annoying). Dr. switched me to Toprol XL 100 mg/day. Of course, insurance made me get Metoprolol ER 100 mg/day (the generic) but I haven't had a problem with it!! I love taking just 1 pill a day instead of having to juggle the two pills and remembering if and when I took them. I take the pill every morning with breakfast (which is usually an apple and a small bowl of cereal and a glass of water). I have gained some weight since being on the Lopressor, but I started the Dash Diet and have lost about 8 lbs. in about 4 months, not too good but I'm not following the diet as well as I should be! I also get tired and occasionally have problems with hearburn and gas, but anytime you take any kind of medication you will have side effects. Wish I didn't have to take any meds but am not willing to subject myself to the effects of high blood pressure, I would rather have the side effects from the meds. My BP is usually 110/75 now and my heart rate is around 70-75. I'm 47 years old and feeling like I might make it into my 90's now!!

While I am sure that Singulair has adverse effects for some children/teenagers/adults, I took Singulair for 2-3 years (until my asthma symptoms improved to the point where I didn't need to take it) while I was a kid and had no adverse side effects. Started back on Singulair in April after having severe reactions to my new puppy (I am now 21). Since then, I really haven't had any side effects at all. I agree that they should black box Singulair and possibly not prescribe it to some children/teens, but for some people (like myself), it works, and shouldn't be taken off the market completely.

I think it is interesting the symptoms that you mention here. I have been on birth control pills since the age of 19. I am now 28. Over the past year I have had similar symptoms. I have been on so many different BCP's that is is hard to keep count. They don't seem to work the way they claim to. The last BCP I was on was orthotryciclen. While taking these I began to experience severe heart palpitations. So bad that they would wake me up at night. Because I wasn't sure if it was an anxiety attack or just being in my head I decided to ignore it. Four months passed by and it seemed to get increasingly worse. I had enough and decided to go to my PCP. She wasn't really much help either. Although I was tested for Mitral Valve Prolapse, which I was told affects younger women my age. There was nothing found. What I thought was interesting is I really felt that it was the birth control pills, but I couldn't find it as a side affect on the information that was provided in the box. The tech who was doing my echocardiogram began to tell me she also experienced the same feelings and found out it was her BCP. Once she confirmed what I thought was right, decided to stop taking them. After three months the symptoms began to disappear. I figured it was just the particular brand. I began to take loestrin 24. I started to feel the same symptoms again, just not as severe. I would feel my heart beat when I would like down in my back and my stomach. My heart rate would reach 90 to 100 sometimes. I know this is not normal. When I visited my gyno yesterday she told me it was impossible that it was a result of the BCP. Maybe it was just anxiety and or perhaps I should get checked out by a cardiologist. That is serious stuff when you are talking to a young person about getting there heart check out. I think if there are any other women out there who are experiencing any similar symptoms should speak up. So these doctors won't keep telling us it is all in our heads and help to take care of this problem.

I knew something was wrong, and I made an appointment with my cardiologist. I have a new doctor, who switched my BP med from propanolol to lisonipril. Im not one to do this usually, but i am overweight and my ankle swells, so the dyharetic idea sounded good. I also have mitral valve prolapse. Beta blockers controlled this extremely well, but now I feel like I need a valve replacement. I came on line to search the relationship between MVP and Lisinopril and WALA! I will kep my cardiologist appointment, but I am going to continue being my own doctor. Symptoms dont lie.
Oh, by the way my wife was just diagnosed with a thyroid problem, and yes you guessed it.....she's on lisinopril.

Hello,
I have just gone through a series of tests and a heart cath over the holidays. I have MVP and two other leaky valves. I have known about these since I was 28, I am now 62. I have had problems with the valves, skipped beats, faster beats early on in diagnosis. Just this Nov., I started with problems again, thus the tests were completed. They found Ven. Fib, fast and skipped beats, therefore putting me on the Toprol XL Tab SA. I have only been on this 7 days. New Year's Day, 4 days after the heart cath, I started with fever and chills, only to find out 2 days ago I have full blown strep throat. This makes me wonder if I had this before the heart cath was performed, as I had complete exhaustion,.... anyhow, I took myself to my family doc and she is taking me off of the Toprol and after reading all of your reports I am very glad. She treats me with herbs and has for years, until this episode, I have been very well, I am actually an energizer bunny due to her efforts! So I am working with her on herbs to build my system back up and support for the heart. I hope the rest of you can find a way to wellness that works for you. I know many people don't believe in herbs but I firmly do! Don't be afraid to try herbs if you can afford it! I am 62 and don't look it or act it, like I said until this episode and it truly makes me wonder if it wasn't the infection playing the biggest part. What concerns me is why that was not caught in the first place? Anyhow, take heed to your own body warnings, other people do not know what is transpiring inside of you, only you can know this. Thank you Doctor ** for keeping me well!

I am taking 25mg of toprol for SVT/MVP started about 6 months ago. started having mild joint pain while doing yoga, just thought I was getting older (I am 46) joint pain started getting much worse in my hips and spreads down my legs when walking for more than 20-30minutes. I have had breast cancer and am concerned it may be a tumor I am scheduled for a bone scan on Monday but after reading the messages on this site I feel much better that it may not be bone cancer and might be this medication. time will tell.

Hello to you all. I have been on Toprol XL for 8-10 months. I have "palpitations" which is why I was placed on this med. Also a diagnosis of Mitral Valve Prolapse. My doctor told me that the MVP can trigger the palpitations and that Toprol is the drug of choice. It helped for a few days. I felt like a new person at first. Then the palpitations gradually started to come back. I have gained 10 lbs. I am 50 years old and assumed that my wt gain was menopause. Now I think that is NOT the answer. I am an RN and I intend to wean myself off of the Toprol after reading the messages here! Why do I need to keep taking a medicine that is causing me to get fat and is NOT controlling my symptoms? Good luck to you all.

Wow! I am also pleased to have found this site! I am a 41 yr old woman with MVP, diagnosed about 2 years ago. I was put on 25 mg of Toprol, and almost immediately began experiencing fatigue and apathy. It did, however, reduce my syptoms of MVP.
After awhile, I questioned the fatigue and modest weight gain and my MD allowed me to cut my rx in half. I was still feeling all day fatigue, which I cannt afford as a full time working Mom. (Who can, really!?) I was really over people telling me "you look tired", even on days I felt fine. I would wake up sometimes and be shocked at how exhausted my face looked. Had I really aged that much in two years!?
My MD finally told me that if my next heart scan looked OK I could try going off the drug. I cant wait! The cure IS really worse than the disease, for me at least! I would rather deal with palpitations and occasional twinges than this fatigue anyday, as long as I feel confident there is not blockage, which there is not, so far.

Ive been on topral for 3 months and I still have the same symptoms from MVP. I had a sore throat for 2 months and neck stiffness. Thyroid levels got off wack. Keep gaining weight and even quit smoking. I am more miserable than before I got on the Topral. IS there any cure to MVP other than medicine?

I have a Mitrol Valve Prolapse. It's very pronounced. I've been on all kinds of meds for it since I was 20 years old and I'm now 50. I was on Lopressor last, but it started to not have much of an affect so they put me on Topral XL 50 mg a day. Since being on it I've been very very tired, more so than usual, but I'm stubborn and push myself. Now I've gotten sever joint pain in my neck, fingers, knees, toes etc. It's awful. I was on the internet looking up the symptoms of lupus and MS; that's how badly I feel. I went to my family physican thinking I surely had to have Rumatoid Arthritis, like my Mom and Grandmother. The test came back normal, no sign of that. I've gained 20 pounds and I've been dieting and exercising the best I can with no avail. I went to look up side effects of Toprol and found this site. Can anyone tell me of a better drug to control palpations and irregular heart beats from MVP? I'd really appreciate discussing a new med with my heart dr. and trying it. I need to get off of this stuff.

38 year old female, starting toprol xl 50 daily six months ago. After the first few days went down to 25 daily due to chest pain, migraine, mood swings.
Currently hoping to go off med - was prescibed it for palps, mvp, migraines, and anxiety.
I have gained weight and inlisted the help of a personal trainer 6 weeks ago - has helped but the weight won't come off.
I feel tired, nightmares occasionally, slightly depressed, moody, and lack of short term memory is effecting my job performance. I hope to get off this drug soon too.

Finally, I have found a site that makes sense of how I am feeling. End of Oct, went to Dr for severe migraine-like headaches, no other cold or sinus symptoms. MRI normal except mild sinus inflammation left maxillary, so prescribed 10days Levaquin 500mg. After the 2nd-3rd day, developed trouble sleeping, legs and arms felt heavy, slight dizziness when walking, discomfort in breast bone and headache worsened with neck ache. Started Prednisone which then helped the stabbing headache. Day 8 my left maxillary sinus started hurting/swollen ,I was feeling sick, and neck really ached. On day ten, my cheek was beet red, hot and swollen, and I had a dentist appointment (my dr said levaquin wasnt effective for MVP, need to take Clindamycin--I took it more than twelve hours after last dose of Levaquin). That same day,the doctor stopped levagquin then prescribed biaxin XL to take later that night (had taken before for MVP dental treatments without problem). I was nervous about all the antibiotics even though they were spaced out more than 12hrs between plus the prednisone--asked the doctor repeatedly and two different pharmacists who all insisted all ok and absolutley necesary for the severe inflammation. The nightmare begins!!! That night I had severe gastric pain and nausea, I felt totally devoid of energy. I called dr-- said biaxin causes severe gastric pain to stop taking it. I couldnt get out of bed the entire day. That night, I developed racing heart--stomach pounding out of chest, severe nausea and headache with neck ache. Went to ER--dehydrated, Xray and blood work normal so sent home with pepcid for the gastritis. I still felt like I was dying! Heart palpatations/pounding out of my chest plus severe nausea and stomach pains, not able to eat, trouble sleeping, "flu-like" feeling constantly with lowgrade fever. That went on the entire week--worse part the sinus infection still needed to be treated so prescribed Avelox(had taken in past for sinus infections) for ten days. Exactly two weeks from 1st ER visit, awaken in middle of night with "stomach" pulsating out of chest HR130+, went back to ER still feeling sick, ache all over, high BP and pulse with mild fever. This time they did abdominal xray, ct-scan and US--all normal (except tons of kidney stones) and so was the blood work--sent home as the mystery gastrtis case told to have upper GI scope ASAP. Endoscope in mid Dec, found only mild/moderate inflammation of eosphagus, yet I couldnt eat anything other than yogurt and soup? I started to feel better Christmas day, and have been making progress back to feeling more human, but not myself. My normal coloring is almost back. I have a few good days which are always followed by few bad days. I have aches and pains everywhere in my body from my shins to my breast--but usually concentated in neck, shoulders, hips. I still have the nausea in am with hot flashes and dry mouth, but are getting less intense. I am 35, perfect health and exercised daily for 2hrs prior to Nov. I cant believe that antibiotics could have such toxic effects and long staying powers. I cant attribute the symptoms I am having strictly to levaquin---but since I still feel the way I did when I started the Levaquin (prior to the prednisone and other antibiotics) I believe that some of the residual sideeffects are from Levaquin. In case, you think I am an uneducated idiot for taking so many meds--I asked several Dr and pharmacist before taking each med, plus I have a Ph.D. in biology.

I have taken Levaquin many times for sinus infections and the more I take it the worse the side effects are. I can not sleep and have anxiety. I have a MVP so this does happen to me sometimes but, it is well under control....so, I know when I take Levaquin it is from taking it.....This time I can not take it. I have to be on it for 3 wks---I will never last. Last night I had to take a zanax to get to sleep. I have a very bad sinus infection. It has recurred 3 times since Feburary. I will be calling my MD today for sure..........

I take 25mg of Toprol XL for mitral valve prolapse. The only thing is I feel tired like I could fall asleep all the time. Is this common with this medicine on such a small dose. My doctor said this small dose shouldn't bother me. Anyone else take this dose and feel tired?
