My mom, 72, has been sick for a year and a half now with drenching night sweats, chills, fatigue as well as some other symptoms. She has undergone every test imaginable and has been to tons of doctors. Every test is normal and the drs. don't know what is wrong. We recently came to the conclusion that she switched to a generic heart medicine at about the time she became ill as well as recently started to take generic paxil because she thought she was having a nervous breakdown. We have just switched her meds to all name brands to see if this will stop the sweats and her general ill feeling. Has anyone heard that taking generic drugs could do this? Specifically Verapamil and the generic paxil. Thanks.

I had been taking the brand name Wellbutrin SR (150mg) 2x per day. My doctor changed my dose to 200mg 2x a day, and the pharmacy filled it with the generic Bupropion SR. I have noticed my symptoms have been coming back (depression, etc.). I even have had lots of water retention, which makes me feel terrible. I would love to know if anyone has had the same problems with generic vs. the brand name. I know the pharmacy will tell us it is the SAME, but I wish now I would have requested the brand name, even if I had to wait until they shipped it in (they don't have it in stock).

Thanks!

Most people believe that when their doctor writes them a prescription for a generic drug, that their are getting the same medication that they were taking before. This is not true. I work in the medical field and I know for a fact that the reason generic drugs are cheaper is because they are not manufactured with the same controls as the name brands. They work differently. That's why so many people have bad reactions to them and alot of the times they don't even work. Once a medication works for me, I never accept the generic form of it. Alot of doctors won't even write prescriptions for generic drugs. Especially cardiac medications. I took Prilosec for 3 yrs and it worked like a charm. I tried Omeprazole for 1 week and it made me deathly ill. Went back to Prilosec and refused to switch.
