Prescribed for sinus pressure and dizziness. Throat tightness like throat closing up, dizziness and off balance. Severe, severe acne, I am 40 years old and it has been disfiguring. I have tried to stop this medication before but have always gotten weakness and out of sorts feeling when I stop even for a day my body starts to withdrawal. This time the acne is SO bad that I am pushing through. I haven't taken it for 3 days now and am weak, fatigued and keep having blood sugar drops. Sucks, but the acne has made me all but a recluse so I have to do something. This sucks, my doc knew I was sensitive to medications, but said that this nose spray wasn't a "systemic" steroid. I beg to differ as I feel feel awful now that I've stopped. Anyone else have problems with "systemic" symptoms ??

I am SO sick at my stomach right now after reading all of these posts. My son is 2yrs old and was put on Singulair right after the new year. We have noticed a horrible change in his behavior....but we attributed it to his age and the fact that he is VERY strong-willed. However, thinking back, he has had some hallucinations. We had a babysitter tell us that when she tried to put him to bed that he cried and told her that there were monsters in the closet. When she picked him up and took him in the kitchen for a drink he kept reaching at the ceiling trying to grab something. Just last night he told me that he saw his Grammy dancing in the living room....my Mom wasn't even there. He has been throwing horrible fits to the point of gagging himself, hitting himself, kicking, hitting, screaming....you name it. At the end of them, I am usually in tears and we are both exhausted. I am not the only one who has experienced this with him....my Mom has too. He is also on Veramyst nose spray....both meds are for allergies. We have taken him off of both and decided to go a more natural route. We have bought local honey, an immune booster from teh health food store, and have him on a really good brand of liquid vitamins. It is hard as a parent to make decisions about your child. It is even worse when you realize that the decision you made has affected your child in a horrible way. I plan on giving him A LOT of attention tonight and giving him a big hug! I just want my fun, playful son back! Good luck to all of you and God Bless!

1) Stop going to the doctor for "sinus infections". This is one of the most over diagnosed, over treated, self-limiting illnesses in the world. Because 90% is viral, it's also the leading cause of antibiotic resistant bacteria in out-patient medicine. Get some Afrin and blow your nose.
2) Avoid taking fluoroquinolones (Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox) as an outpatient. These powerful drugs should be used to save lives in the hospital. The leading exception would be a urinary tract infection that is resistant to all other antibiotics.
3) All fluoroquinolones can cause tendon ruptures, especially the achille's tendon in patients over 65. This is a devastating injury, though rare with this class of antibiotics.

my 11 year old son became lethargic and had a loss of appetite almost immediately but what concerned us most was the tic that he developed on day 3 and 4 of using Zyrtec we discontinued use as of 3 o,clock yesterday (day 4) he has been sleeping for 14 hours we of course check on him constantly Please do not use this product if you see any of these side effects we never had any of this with clariton but will not take our chances We are going to try just the nose spray prescribed by the doctor no more over the counter meds for us.

My daughter is 5 years old and has been on Singulair for about 2 years now. I was at a loss concerning her behavior for the past 2 years. The anger, aggression, tics in her eyes and legs feeling tingling, unable to express herself, and truly not liking herself and thinking we don't like or love her. All this brought us to take her to therapy. And then all this information regarding side effects of Singulair come out. I brought this to her allergist and he like many others brushed it off. I think it is time the medical community looks very close at this drug concerning side effects with children. How many more parents have to come forward with all the same side effects for these educated doctors to realize there is a hugh psychological and neurological connection with this drug for some children. It has been two days now that my daughter stopped Singulair. Her nose is already starting to drip and her cough is back, but I would much rather deal with these side effects of allergies than watching her go though this mental anguish any longer. I have not seen any changes yet, but it had only been two days.

My son requires two forms of medications to stop the running nose, singulair and pediox. The two together were a very good combination and it did work. By eliminating the signulair on Oct. 6th, his nose is already running and he is coughing. We have tried Zyrtek and a few others I can't even remember, but none work as well. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I will be calling his pediatrician for other suggestions, but I know she will be against us taking him off of the singulair, especially since he has had pneumonia in the past.

I am a 60 year old female. Had taken Hyzaar for several years, but due to high cost, insurance recommended Lisinopril (my doctor agreed). I started taking Lisinopril HCTZ 20/25mg on 5/11/08. After 5 days, I developed a cough that grew increasingly worse with lots of mucus. I coughed so hard there would be tears rolling down my face. The mucus would get stuck in my throat and I had to make horrible sounds to clear it. I carried a bottle of water every where. I saw my doctor on 5/27/08. He prescribed antibiotic for sinus infection and cough med. The meds did not help. I saw him again on 6/2 and 6/5 and he gave me a steroid that did not help. I started researching side effects of Lisinopril and decided to take myself off on 6/12 and start the Hyzaar again. In the meantime my doctor got me in to see an ENT on 6/17. He gave me a nose spray and something to dry up the mucus. I noticed the cough did not seem as bad the day I went to the ENT and it got progressively better. I did take the medication prescribed by the ENT, but felt that discontinuing the Lisinopril was probably why the cough and mucus got better. So, a "glutton for punishment", I started the Lisinopril again (wanted to make sure my problems were caused by the Lisinopril). After taking it for about 6 days, I have developed the cough and mucus again. No more Lisinopril for me. I started Hyzaar again on 7/6. It took about a week to a week and a half last time to get better.

I thought I had sinuses for years..got test for allergies and was founded to be allergic to nothing! Despite having at least 3 infections a year and on my 3rd nose spray, zyrtec, nyquil at night..ect..because I was contantly congested and had drainage & headaches..3-4 infections a year.. She ordered a cat scan and was told that my sinuses had spurs but was clear; my septum was severely deviated and I needed a ENT to have surgery to correct it...The ENT wanted to do major surgery which included a plastic surgeon... so I went for a second opinion to another ENT that was well known who told me I had rebound headaches..and referred me to a neurologist..my goal was to get off all the meds (nose sprays, nettie pot, antihistamines..nyquil..ect..) ..he was a dinosaur and was convinced that although I had a severe deviated septum~he didnt want to do surgery but wanted me to stop all meds I was on and to go to his neurologist that he liked *(another dinosaur) who put me on Topamax..50mg in the morning and 50 mg at night..I had panic attacks right away so he added 20 mg of klonopin at night to help with that and flexeril to help me relax...he hinted at me going to a pysch doctor which pissed me off right as if I was psychosomatic or something... and stiffled me a few times when I tried to talk to him about my drainage and congestion~he wanted to hear none of that because he already made his mind up what I had and "sinuses" didn't jive with his impression that I had migraines.

All of the sudden within days I really did have migraines..they just hit me! HARD...I had to call him and tell him I was in excruciating pain on the right side...he called in Imitrex inj. and they worked within 5 min. and my Topamax went from 100 mg total > 250 mg/day! I had at least 6 shots since and the side effects of the Topamax have profoundly changed my personality...I have no word recall..like being stoned in the 70's but worse because I have a special needs child and I need to engage her and am like a zombie! I have ALL the same sx that are mentioned but notice one that isnt noted which is my tongue is raw as well as my throat...all the way down into my stomach...I am having to take zantac for acid indigestion~it is like my insides are raw!
I am also having extreme constipation...I lost weight in the first 2 mos. where I couldn't eat nothing..but now I am eating cause it's there but it is not leaving me even when I take multiply doses of my old standby... I am drinking tons of water..at least 64 oz a day but it is not helping. My eyes are burning at times...I need my reading glasses all the time now. Some days my heart is beating out of my chest for no reason..at rest..I just feel ill like something is not right at all! I don't go nowhere & have become a hermit. My headaches are gone but I feel I am just a shell of a person and want to get off...I am slowly weaning off by doing it 25mg at a time for one week at a time....then another 25mg another week......I know I will have migraines but I will just bite the bullet and suffer through it till I am off this poison....I have some injections left..MY main goal was to be off meds and these side effects are horrible! Once I am completely off I am going to a good ENT that can do the surgery to fix my sinuses so that I can hopefully be drug free as I intended. I too wasn't told of these side effects at all. So much time & $$$$ wasted! I think if I stay on this too much longer it will truly do long term harm!

After reading all the horror stories on here, me and my husband soon began to realize that we were having a lot of the side effects listed here and not listed on my son's actual Singulair prescription. The side effects my son had were behavioral changes, irrational behavior, inattentiveness, not able to stay on task or stay still -- in fact he broke his arm twice being so hyper, yelling, screaming and just plain mean.

We took our son off of Singulair as a trial for a few days. Immediately we began to notice differences in his behavior. He wasn't as agitated and quick to yell or get angry. (He's only 5 years old). He actually would be listening when we would speak to him. He would sit calmy and read books and the one huge thing he would do was look at us and smile. He even said to my husband once, "I love you Daddy," which just brought tears to our eyes. I never realized what a Singulair fog he was in and what it did to him. Here we were pretty close to getting him evaluated for ADHD or even Aspergers. So now we're in the same boat as others that are searching for other asthma meds to give my son. Right now we have gone back to Pulmicort, Xopenex, Nasonex and Allegra. I'm so glad I read this forum because I was desperately searching for answers for my sons behavioral issues. Oh, by the way he was on Singulair for 1-1/2 years.

I am one of many that has decided to stop giving my child Singulair. And like many others, I have noticed a great improvement in her behavior.

My question is for those who have done the same. What medication have you replaced the Singulair with and have you noticed any of the same side effects that Singulair was causing? What are your thoughts on Flovent inhaler?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

From the Netherlands 2006.

This is the html version of the file http://www.lareb.nl/documents/kwb_2006_4_montel.pdf.

Page 1
Nederlands Bijwerkingen Centrum LarebMei 2007Montelukast and depressive symptomsIntroductionMontelukast (Singulair®)is a leukotriene receptor antagonist available on the Dutchmarket since 1998. It is indicated for the treatment ofasthma as combination therapy forpatients with light to moderate forms of chronic asthma which cannot be adequately controlledby inhalation corticosteroids and short-acting ß-agonists. For asthma patients for whommontelukast is indicated as asthma treatment it can also relieve symptoms of seasonal allergicrhinitis. Montelukast is also indicated in asthma prevention, if exercise-inducedbronchoconstriction is the main factor

.ReportsOn September 20, 2006 the database of the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb contained four reports of depressive reactions associated with theuse of montelukast.Patient A is a female aged 55 who used montelukast 10 mg once daily for asthmaassociated with COPD. Concomitant medication included ipratropiumbromideinhalation, salmeterol inhalation, fluticasone inhalation, acetylcysteine, budesonide nose spray and desloratadine. Two weeks after montelukast therapy was initiated the patient experienced nightmares, a depressive symptoms, fatigue and increaseddyspnoea. When montelukast was withdrawn, the first three symptoms resolved. Itis not known if the dyspnoea resolved. The reporting pneumonologist stated thatthe increased dyspnoea also could be a sign of progressing COPD.Patient B, reported by a pneumonologist, is a female aged 39 who used montelukast 10 mg once daily for asthma. Concomitant medication included salmeterol/fluticasone inhalation, mebeverine and psyllium seed. One week afterstarting montelukast treatment the patient experienced chest discomfort, malaise, depressive symptoms and dizziness. Montelukast was withdrawn, patient outcomeis unknown.Patient C, reported by a pharmacist, is a male aged 46 who used montelukast 10mg once daily for asthma. Concomitant medication included omeprazole, salbutamol inhalation and budesonide/formoterol inhalation. Six days after startingmontelukast treatment the patient got in a depressed state. The patient continued to use montelukast for four weeks but the depression did not resolve. Whenmontelukast was withdrawn, the patient recovered.Patient D, reported by a pharmacist, is a female aged 59 who used montelukast 10mg once daily for mild to moderate asthma. Concomitant medication included mometasone nose spray, salmeterol/fluticason inhalation, oxazepam and paroxetine. Three days after starting treatment with montelukast the patientexperienced insomnia and aggravation of her depression. When montelukast waswithdrawn the symptoms resolved.

Page 2
Nederlands Bijwerkingen Centrum LarebMei 2007Other sources of informationLiteratureSeveral drugs are known to cause depressive symptoms. However montelukasthas not been associated with depressive symptoms earlier . A Medline searchbased on the MeSH terms montelukast, leukotriens, depressive disorder and mooddisorders did not yield any relevant publication.DatabasesOn September 20, 2006 the database of the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb contained four reports of depression associated with the use ofmontelukast (ROR 2.1 95% CI 0.8 - 5.7). The same day the database of the WHOcontained 3466 reports on montelukast, 43 of these concerned depression (ROR1.2 95% CI 0.9 – 1.6)MechanismThe mechanism of montelukast-induced depressive symptoms is unknown. However montelukast has earlier been associated with adverse drug reactionssuch as abnormal dreaming, nightmares, hallucinations, agitation with aggressive behavior, irritability and restlessness, which suggests that montelukast can penetrate the blood brain barrier and exert an effect in the brain .Discussion and conclusionLareb received four reports of depressive symptoms in patients using montelukast.Possible confounding includes that asthma itself has been associated with the development of depression . Inhalated corticosteroids can also exert effects onthe central nervous system. Fluticason in combination with salmeterol which isused by patients A, B and D, is associated with hyperactivity and irritability where as budesonide, which is used by patient C also has been associated with depression . The latency of montelukast-induced depressive symptoms variesfrom 3-14 days. In three of the cases a positive dechallenge was seen. The fact that the patients (except for one) did not suffer from depressive symptomsbefore they started montelukast, the short latency, and recovery after withdrawal ofthe drug all strengthen our hypothesis that depressive symptoms are an ADRrelated to the use of montelukast. According to the Marketing Authorisation Holderof montelukast, depression will be added to the product information.References1. Dutch SPC Singulair®. On 02-26-08 Tuesday my Dr. prescribed Lisinopril 10 mg 1 time per day, 14 days later on 03-11-08 at 2:30 am I woke up because I could not hear the fan we sleep with. When I sat up I heard the fan going w/my right ear and felt my left ear was plugged. I tried to unplug it but it wouldn't and I realized I had to go to sleep because I had to go to go for some fasting blood work for my diabetes. When I got up that morning my ear still felt plugged and I thought I must have an ear infection so I would go up to see my Dr. since I had to go to the lab. 16 days later 03-26-08 3 audio test, 1 MRI the Dr's don't know what happened. Lisinopril was the only new medication I had started taking. I believe it was the cause of my 100% hearing loss. I noticed that someone else wrote about hearing loss on 03-18-08 & I replied to them but I have not heard back to see if they have regained their hearing. They say I probably will not get my hearing back! Thanks A LOT Lisinopril!

Went to my Dr for a sinus infection. I Came out with some Singulair and nose spray. Before the visit it was just a major case of Sinusitis. After the visit I thought I was going crazy. I have never experienced anxiety before. I am worried all the time, I thought I might be going crazy. I NEVER cry. I've cried about 4 or 5 different times. I feel like my arms and legs are restless, yet weak. I feel like I'm falling apart. I was in a constant state of worry, panic, anxiety and panic. I couldn't function, and when I could it was only barely.

I ended up going to the emergency room for the Sinusitis because the pressure was so intense. I was given more meds and told to stay on the Singulair. I realized upon taking it the next morning that I didn't know anything about this medicine because I was given samples with no insert info. I looked on line...I found this site. Thank you for posting your side effects. I'm not going crazy. I'm getting off Singulair. By the way did anyone else have these side effects?

I have been on a very small (2.5mg) dose of Lisinopril for nearly a year. Until this year, all was well, and I experienced no particular side effects. Then in January I contracted a flu like virus which lasted for about 10 days. About two weeks following recovery, I began to be aware of ringing, hissing and buzzing in my ears - sometimes just one ear, sometimes both. It varies in intensity, but is particularly noticeable, and irritating, at night. The GP informed me I have fluid behind the eardrums and gave me a nose spray to clear it. To date, the nose spray hasn't helped, and I'm wondering if the fluid and resulting tinnitus is in fact nothing to do with the virus, but a side-effect of the lisinopril. Has anyone out there experienced similar problems with this drug?

Hi all.. I 've been taking Lisinopril for about 4 months now.
Started with 5MG of Lisinopril, Heart was beating too hard in chest.
So I cut it down 1/2MG's (2.5) and my heart felt normal again.
I have post nasal drip, that is clear color and thin, plus the tickle cough that wakes me up at night somewtimes.
I got this nose thing and cough to stop for a month after my doctor gave me Rhinocort Nose Spray, it is a steroid type spray.
I stopped using that spray, because I thought I was better,
Now I am get the nose / cough again.
Also getting shortness of breath that could be from anxiety.
Also Pain in the back of both legs, in the calfs.
My stomach has seem like it has been extended for about a week or so.
I also have been getting "really" tired. When I come home from work, I can hardly stay up.
