I was given Levaquin for a kidney infection. It seemed to help break my fever but after only one dose, I broke out in rash and later that night had tingling in my legs. My hand felt numb. When I called the oncall doctor she told attributed to anxiety. I told her I was anxious because all of a sudden my hand had gone numb and knowing that was a danger sign I refused to take anymore. Later that night, I could not walk or stand or bear weight on my legs. My shins and Achilles tendons were burning and only because of the internet did I know what was happening to me. Only 1 out of three doctors would agree I was having a drug reaction. For some odd reason, the doctors REFUSE to believe or acknowledge this was caused by Levaquin. No wonder the side effects are "rare" if no doctor will acknowledge the pain their patients are going through....how can the drug companies get any real feedback. Funny thing is only after I sent an email out to my team essentially warning them about this drug did I find out my coworker who had been on medical leave had suffered the same fate of torn achilles tendon and only after 3 months of PT is finally walking without pain. WHAT IS WRONG WITH our world when no one will listen to us. Thank God for the internet. I can walk now and have no pain standing (lasted only 2 and half days) but I am scared about the future as I know the results are lingering. I have been exhausted this whole weekend and wonder if its just me recovering as my PCP had me quit all antibiotics even at the risk of getting my kidney infection back. Well nice to know our stories are the same...and its not in our heads. BTW, my ER doctor told me it was a good drug and very unlikely the cause of my leg pains. They rather believed I had pneumonia or lyme's disease before they would believe it was caused by their beloved drug. All I can think now is I hope one day they are given this drug and it cripples them like it has so many others. Sometimes that is the only way they will acknowledge the truth. It has to happen to them or someone they love.

They think that I have either crohns or ulcerative colitis. I have tried antibiotics, lialda, mesalamine enemas, with no improvement. After another colonoscopy they put me on prednisone at 40mgs, 30, 20, 10, then 5 decreasing weekly. Well the first week was okay. I had some of the side affects, insomnia, extreme hunger, and crazy. I could deal with that. But then when I decreased down to 30mg, my body flipped. I awoke from the middle of the night with burning pain in the knees. So bad I took 4 ibuprofen and threw myself in the tub with epsom salt. I thought okay that was weird because I have never had a joint pain in my life. I saw the gastroenterologist that day bc I was still having abdominal pain. He totally blew off the knee pain and said he had no idea what that was. I thought okay maybe it will go away. A few days went by and nothing. 3 days later and I awoke one morning crying in pain because of my legs. I called the on call doctor who also said he had no idea and go to the er. So I went crying hysterically for 4 hours. Even after 3 rounds of dilaudid I was still in pain. They suggested a Rheumatologist. So I went to one a week later who said I was going through steroid withdrawals. And there is nothing we can do but treat the symptoms of pain. I am now down to 10mgs have been out of work for 2 weeks and am absolutely miserable with severe leg pain, muscle weakness and fatigue. He also adjusted the drop down increments to 5 instead of 10. Anyway I will never take this drug again and I think they rushed to this one. Just wanted to share. I am glad I found this website because I went from a fully functioning physically fit 28 year old to a crippled crying crazy person. I think I was scaring my husband, honestly, until we both read some of your postings which were similar.

I was prescribed Doxy 100mg 2x a day for a sinus/eye infection 2 years ago after sinus surgery. It upset my stomach so bad but my doctor said to keep taking it because the stomach upset was less problem then this infection. I also got a yeast infection. Didn't have to deal with the sun because it was winter in the midwest. My stomach never returned to normal. Now I am labeled having IBSD. I have very frequent diahrhea on & off. It seems go into remission every now & then. I have had an upper & lower GI too. Nothing was found. Now 2 years later I get another sinus/eye infection. Doc gives me again. I forgot this was the same drug I had 2 years ago until I called my old pharmacy and had them check my records. This time I only took one pill after eating. I took it at 6:30pm. At 1am I woke up with a burning pain in my chest. I was sweating so badly. I got up and ate some soda crackers. I didn't feel nauseaus, just burning pain like heartburn. I finally got back to sleep at 3:30am. Woke up at 11am.

I remembered what the doc said 2 years ago and decided to take another dose. With food of course. About 4 hours later I was in the bathroom bent over in pain with the runs severely. I called the doctor. Being it was Saturday and after hours I got the oncall doctor who wasn't very sympathetic. All her heard was CHEST pain and ordered me to go to the hospital ER. I argued abit with him and he just yelled back "Go to the ER now." Being the stubborn person I am, I did not go. But I did not take another dose. I called the pharmacy the next day and told them what happened. They said it was definitly a drug reaction. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow and demand a different med. This stuff should be banned.
