I am experiencing a long term effect from taking Depo that I would not wish on anyone. I was on Depo for 1-2 years about 10 years ago. Prior to depo, I had a normal cycle. Post-depo, I NEVER returned to getting a normal period. Doctors put me on oral contraceptives to 'regulate' me which in hindsight just masked my natural cycle. I am now married and trying to conceive. I cannot ovulate or get my period on my own and am now taking cycles of assisted ovulation (which involve nightly injections, almost daily ultrasounds and bloodwork, and much anger and stress). My cousin is experiencing the same thing - was on depo for a few years about 5 yers ago and STILL cannot ovulate on her own.
Bottom line - if you ever plan to conceive, stop taking depo immediately. Who knows how long, if at all, it will take you to get a natural cycle again.

Hi all...WOW, hard to believe that so many of us are experiencing similar side effects.
I started taking Yasmin almost 2 1/2 weeks ago. Two days after I started taking it, I noticed I was starting to get nauseous, brief sharp shooting pains in my abdomen just under my left rib and sometimes a wee bit of a burning sensation in the same area. These sharp but brief pains occur anywhere from 4 times to maybe 15 or 20 times in a day and I almost NEVER when I am just sitting still or laying down. These pains are almost always in the same spot so I find it hard to believe it could be from gas although I AM much gassier. Wouldn't gas pains travel? I find I am burping alot and just generally gassy feeling. The other thing I noticed is that I dropped 8 pounds in the first 5 days of taking Yasmin. WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?
I pretty much have to continue taking BC because my doctor put me on them to see if they would stop my epileptic seizures which occur only when I ovulate. We are testing to see if stopping ovulation will stop the seizures. They think it is all related to peri-menopause. I'm 48. Sheeesh. Does anyone else have these sharp intermittent shooting pains under their ribs???? This is scaring me.

I am completely heart broken to hear all this negativity about Yasmin. I had been on it for 5 years. I did the patch for about 6 months and Seasonale for 3 months in between. I hated both. Seasonale made me have the worst migranes and a period that lasted a full two months....STRAIGHT! I never had a problem with Yasmin except for feeling nauseated when i started a new pack after a period. I got off of Yasmin in December to help regulate my body. I'm getting married next and hope to conceive quickly after. I started a period normally after I got off my last pack. But, I had not sign of a period afterwards. After stressing for two months I called the doctor. They did a blood pregnancy test on me and everything was negative. He started me on Provera to start a period. I took it for 10 days and 4 days later I got a period. I am so upset and nervous that I will not be able to start a period normally and ovulate normally. All I want is to become pregnant. I feel like I really messed up by taking Yasmin now that I read all of your stories. I really hope I start a period naturally next month. This way I know that I'm ovulating. If anyone else has had this problem and started their period naturally again or even gotten pregnant after this problem please let me know. I really need the reassurance. By the way...my sex drive completely went away after stopping. Now that it's been almost 4 months and I'm back to normal in that department!! Thank God!!

hi guest 40706.
the bleed you experienced when you stopped taking yasmin was just a withdrawl bleed from stopping taking the pill,it was not a period as you do not ovulate when you are taking the pill, your next proper period may be delayed as your natural hormones need to build back up and take over, hopefully this will not be a long wait! in the mean time make sure you use some form of protection to be safe and if you have any doubts about a possible pregnancy do a test to make sure you are not pregnant. take a good vitamin and mineral supplement and consider some milk thistle to cleanse your liver of the build up of synthetic hormones.
i wish you all the best, hope you fell better soon.

hi murph 70,
not sure if this site will help you work out your results,i looked my tsh level up on here.
www.pinelandpress.com/faq/hormonelevels
you could give it a look. i am also having problems with my cycle. i have started to ovulate again (thank goodness!) my periods are still coming between 33 - 38 days instead of my old pre yasmin cycle that was 28 days on the dot. i have some periods that are really heavy and some that are so light they are more like spotting. i suffer pms (with mild anxiety) about 12 days before my period starts until 2 days after bleeding starts. i get an outbreak of acne about 10 days before my period and savage backache just before my period too! all are symptoms of pms,i never had any of these symptoms before i went on yasmin except for the odd monthly spot on my chin! i really wish i had not messed with my perfectly normal cycle but i was totally ignorant to the fact that any of these awful things could happen just from taking a pill,i was told it would improve my life not wreck it!
sorry for the rant murph 70 but i find once i start on the subject i can't stop! hope the site i suggested is of some help.
silke.
my heart goes out to you...... remember you are strong and you will beat this! please feel better soon!

I don't know if this counts as a side effect or not.
I stopped taking Yasmin on the 6th of October and got my period on the 11th of October. I want to try and have a baby but I don't know what is going on with my body. It is now the 9th of November and no period. I don't know if my period is delayed or not, or if I am pregnant.
I went to the doctor last week to see if I was pregnant and the blood test results came back negative. So I am guessing that my side effect is that my period has not returned because I don't think that I am pregnant.
This is very frustrating because I want to concieve and my period is not present and I can't determine when I ovulate so this is a pain in the butt.
That is my side effect of yasmin. You stop it withdraw bleed and then your body is out of wack for ages and no sign of period which makes you think that you are pregnant. But then again maybe I am and I don't know it!

Hi Sophie!!
So good to hear you're doing a bit better now!! And, yes, In MY case it was the 3 - 4 month mark where things started slightly getting better. But remember, every person is different and there's definitely not ONE plan for ALL!! So if there is NOT a significant change into better around that mark, please don't despair therefore!!
I think you should try to not think and "wait" about the time it needs for you to get better. Just always be sure that it WILL get better and as you already see, you're almost there!!
I'm doing pretty fine again at the moment after the last 2 weeks feeling a bit tired and my circulation didn't work that good again. I have such phases every few weeks, seems as if it was around the time I should ovulate or get my period, well, if only I finally would!! It's now over 15 months after Yasmin without getting my period!!
I also have a little cramping (feels just as if I might get my period in the next few hours, but I never do...) and a sore feeling in my breasts again. Even my skin is getting a bit more spotty. My weight has been going down since February for about 5 kg (about 10 pounds I think) without changing my eating habits or anything else. Well, my body seems to be still fighting against that hormonal mess...
I'll give it another 2 - 3 months, then I will decide if I go to another gyn... Well, I don't like to see any doctors or hospitals if it's not really necessary because I visited about 10 - 20 of them around December 2004 / April 2005.....
I'm still hoping, that my body will heal itself completely and everything will be normal some day without taking another chemical...
Keep looking forward to much better times Sophie, believe me, they are ahead!! I never would have believed around the phase you are now in that I could be able to feel again like a healthy and happy person!! And now I do!!
Please feel free to post or E-Mail me if you need some pep talk or just need to unburden yourself!! I'd like to help, if I can somehow!!
Best wishes and a big hug to you and all the other "Yasmin survivors" out there!! Hang in there!!

Can anyone share their experiences after coming off Yasmin? I seem to feel good for the first 2 weeks and then once I start to ovulate, all the anxiety and nervousness and sadness comes back. Will my normal pms symptoms ever return? Before Yasmin I had virtually no pms at all...I should have left well enough alone but who knew! I'm using klonopin to help me through these times and I was down to the lowest dose I have been on last week, and as soon as pms set in, I've had to up it again. Any thoughts?

I have been taking the shot for nearly 4 years and the only side effect I have ever experiences is loss of my period, and frankly it has been wonderful not having to deal with that every month.

to the last two postings about the side effects.
i just want you to both know that everything ur feeling i have felt too!!
i was on yasmin for a month and had to stop taking it because it was making me anxious, giving me palpitations and i had chest pains and an ache in my left arm.
i went to hospital twice cos the palpitations and pains got so bad.. i thought i was having a heart attack!
im only 23!.. i did lose my libido for a couple of months and yes my breasts went up a whole bra size and they were so sore!!
its definitely yasmin that is causing both of you these problems. my doctor also told me to get my thyroid checked which i did and also had numerous blood tests which all came back fine.
ive now been off this pill for 5 months and i am feeling much better. i am just getting back my energy and finally the heart palps and anxiety is easing up..... it gets harder around the time i ovulate and the week of my period but its easier than the first two months.
i can not stress to you more to get off this pill!! its a nightmare...
lots of luck to you both

I have a problem, that I've not seen any other posts about. I have been taking Yasmin for about 3-4 years. I have stopped taking it because my fiance and I are planning to have a baby. I have cramping low-- in my whole lower stomach. It isn't terrible but it hurts when I push on my stomach, sit down, during sex, and I am having a little lower back ache. It aslo feels like I have a balloon in my stomach. I also feel terribly bloated. The pain isn't bad and comes and goes. It is more annoying that hurtful, like slight cramping before a period. I stopped taking the pill after my last period, when I was due to start a new pack. It has been about a week and a half since my last period and I finished the last pack. I wondered if I was starting to ovulate but don't think it should last this long. The pain and bloating started last Saturday and it is now Wednesday. I am beginning to wonder if my body is going into some sort of shock or withdrawal from Yasmin???? Anyone had similar problems? I havn't had any other side effects from Yasmin....while on it anyway.

To the girl who asked about getting on antianxiety meds: Heres my story. After 9 months of being off Yasmin and still experiencing anxiety, sleepwalking nightmares that i NEVER had prior to taking that crap fo four month, I decided to get help. I started seeing e therapist who prescribed BUspar. I took it without reservation, but unfortunately it made me feel HORRID. I had the most horrific and gruesome nightmare, woke up screaming for three days in a row, soaked in sweat. The next day I felt like i was stoned, I was paranoid and foggy and had no depth perception. So no more of that I decided and then they gave me zoloft. I couldn't bring myself to take it due to the fact that I KNEW it would be a struggle to get off due to the experiences of my friends who are/ were on it. I decided to just tough it out. Now it has been almost a full year off of it and I am doing better. The anxiety is only about 2 times a month, like when i ovulate and before my period. It is like a tiny wave not a tsunami this time either. Hang in there you will get better but in the meantime i would read HOPE AND HELP FOR YOUR NERVES by DR CLAIRE WEEKS. I swear to god, had Inot picked up that book on AMzaon.com I may have killed myself. Good Luck

Thank you so much for sharing all your stories! I had been on Ortho-tri for 13 years. (With headaches, low sex drive, crazy moods). Went of 3 years ago to have children. Within a month or so ALL symptoms were gone. Sex was wonderful again and i was not crazy.
So 3 weeks ago i get on Yasmin. Since i've had the joint pain mentioned (figured it was something else i guess), NO sex drive at all, blurred vision (had this before due to anemia), i'm so tired and sad it seems. I couldn't figure it out. Yesterday i started thinking it might be the pill. So i'm stopping the pill today and going back to condoms until my husband gets his vacetomey. I'd rather feel good and use a condom i guess.
I wonder if the low sex drive is due to the fact that the pill keeps us from ovulating?? I know i get really in the mood for about a week around the time i normally ovulate. Any thoughts on that?
Hang in there ladies! I guess having control over our bodies is not always easy..... :)

Hi. I've been on Yasmin for about 6 months now. I was placed on it to help with the nasty side-effects of PCOS. A blessing it has been for my acne and those icky little chin hairs that I was starting to get because of the PCOS.
But I was extremely hessitant to be on a pill again after taking a 8 + year break from them. I can't tolerate all the extra hormones very well and my husband told me that if I'd ever go back on them, he'd rather live in Antartica than with me, because I had a tendency to become a SUPER EMOTIONAL B*$@# while I was one them. (Back then I tried every brand out there to try and supress my ovairan cysts but with no luck) Finally I choose to go off the pills on my own and felt great!!!
Because I have PCOS I don't ovulate regularly and both of my sons were concieved with the help of Clomind. But since I hadn't had a "real" period in over 2 years after my second son was born, I went to a reproductive endocronologist who reccommended Yasmin. Ok, I reluctantly went on it. My periods have never been heavier or with more cramps in my entire life. (Not to be gross, but a super-plus tampon and a night-time maxi pad aren't usually enough protection.) And having a period that lasts 7-9 days every month is shocking for someone like me who normally doesn't have that many days of a period in an entire year.
Yasmin was great at first, cleared up my skin, I even lost 10 pounds. But I've really noticed in the last few months my anxiety level has climbed to an all-time high! I can't sleep, I'm anxious all the time (now I'm on Xanax to "help on those days when I need it most".) Well, I took a 1/2 pill the other day and won't be taking any more of those....I felt so out-of-sorts and ugh! It just wasn't a good thing! After reading these posts, I'm beginning to think it might be the Yasmin.
I've had terrible headaches - worse than any migraine I've ever suffered through. I'm grouchy with my sons, who really are the best behaving kids I've ever met for their ages (and while I may be a bit prejuiced, I have taught their age groups for many many years). My sex drive has hit an all time low and now I've developed some weird rash on my neck, chest and arms.
I'm fair skined and always use sunblock, but I went to the beach last weekend...broke out with the rash on my neck and chest...I even went to the doctor for it. No explainantion was given. I went outside yesterday in the sun again...rash got worse on my neck and chest and is now on my arms. I've never had anything like this before, but I have noticed my skin and my hair is much drier since I've been on Yasmin.
Has anyone else had this kind of reaction from being on this when they were in the sun?
Thanks for reading this. In the morning I'm making an appt. with my OBGYN and seeing if I can try something else - after reading your posts I don't think I want to be on this stuff any longer!
take care!

I am a young bipolar woman with one child. I am trying to get pregnant again. My doctor prescribed Seroquel as a "safe alternative" to other drugs. Much to my dismay...I have done some personal research on the drug and found that it increases the hormone prolactin which can cause breast tissue enlargement, and causes menstral problems (makes it so I don't ovulate) I am so pissed off! I have lost faith in my doctor, drugs, and my body. The only help this drug has had in getting pregnant again is making my stomach look pregnant! Major abdominal bloating!

I have been using the NuvaRing to lessen the pain associated with Endometritis and have been using it for almost a full month now.. and have experienced many things other women have. Nausea, headaches, depression, mood swings etc. I was skeptical abt trying any form of birth control, after having severe reactions to various versions of the pill.
my doctor has assured me that the first month or two having symptoms such as mentioned is normal.. because your body is having to adjust its self to the level of hormones.
some have mentioned having symptoms as if you are pregnant.. and that is basically what birth control does. it tricks your body into thinking that it is pregnant so it wont ovulate.(unless on the off week)..
despite all of my symptoms i am going to stick it out for a few more months. if my body does not adjust i will have to move on to something else.
