I have been on the NuvaRing for a little less than 2 years now. Everything seemed fine until four months ago when I started to get very intense "irritations" in my vaginal area. I thought I was inflicting this upon myself because I switched to boy shorts underwear and a little tighter jeans. My ob/gyn attributed my problem to using a new brand of soap and a new brand of pantiliner, and she simply suggested I "soak my bum" in the tub 1-2 times a day to reduce the irritation. (She's British.) She also suggested I use as much A&D diaper rash ointment (which is mainly petroleum jelly) as I wanted or needed. After 2 months of continued vaginal irritation, my ob/gyn simply said that what I had can take a while to clear up, and that I should just continue to soak my bottom and use as much A&D ointment as I needed.

After reading everyone's postings, I've learned that it's not unheard-of for one's body to take several months to show NuvaRing side effects. I share the same symptoms of complete loss of sex drive, vaginal dryness and intense pain during sex that many of you have described. I went through so many months of accepting these conditions because I thought all of those things were happening because I was nearing my 40th birthday and simply getting older. Those of you in your 20's that described similar symptoms helped me realize that what I was experiencing wasn't natural.

I've decided to take my NuvaRing out and stay birth control free for a couple of months to see the irritability goes away. I am very eager and hopeful to lose my dependency on A&D ointment, to want to have sex again, and to wear boy shorts and tight jeans again.

Hi Ladies,
I have also been having some problems with my Mirena. I had it implanted in November 2008. Since then I have had severe cramping, with pain that goes down my right leg. I can cramp at any time during the month, not just during the period. I feel like I am really tired, weak, and fatigued sometimes too. I have ringing in my ears that sounds like a heartbeat.

But to me, the worst thing that has happened so far is having longer periods. Sure enough, the period is light enough for me to wear a pantiliner the whole time, but they tend to last forever. The first period lasted for over a month. The second one for almost a month, and now this third one has been going for over a week now. I had the Mirena implanted so that I could have a more free sex-life with my husband, but being on my period all the time definitely defeats the purpose. My doctor said," Oh well it says it in the pamphlet: where it says may cause spotting or bleeding in between periods." I told her, yeah but you didn't tell me a period for a whole month straight. She said that there are some women that this same thing has happened to, and even a woman that had a 3 month long period.

Sometimes, I feel like my doctor tricked me into this and didn't really tell me all the risks and things that could happen to my body. And she definitely didn't tell me it would be as painful as it was when I had it put in.

I am still debating about having it removed because I like not having to take pills everyday. (That's how I got in trouble the first time.) But it is definitely very irritating to my body.

For those of you who say that your husband can feel the Mirena, you can have your doctor to shorten the strings. That is what my doctor did for me, and I never had any complaints.

I googled Nuvaring and side effects and so glad i found this sight! I have had external vaginal itching and thought maybe it was due to dry skin. The last time I had sex it was uncomfortable. I feel great when it's time to take the Nuvaring out. At first it was great because it was somewhat lubricating and sex was more pleasant. But after being on it for 6 months, things have changed. I too have to wear a pantiliner 'round the clock because of discharge. I'm thinking i'm better off going back on the pill. I was on YAZ and the only problem with taking the pill is REMEMBERING to take it!!!
Thanks to all of you for your posts!

I just recently had the mirena iud inserted. Oct 30 2008. 3 months after having my first child under a normal vaginal delivery. When I have asked my doctor regarding any side affects he stated that women may have heavy bleeding the first 6 months/ and that after those 6 months that your periods will actually disappear.

The first week that I had the mirena in, I began bleeding almost instantly. Blood clots the size of my closed fist came out of my body from the uterine wall I suppose. I went through a super tampon/ and a pad in an hour and a half. ( I am one of those women who normally use a super tampon maybe once in a while/ normally a reg. size does the job) This bleeding has not stopped since the mirena was inserted.

Looking at a computer screen is part of my daily routine at work. It seems as though my eyes feel blurry through out the day as I am working. Towards the end of the day I can barely stand to look at it. This has never happened to me before. It is almost like I want to turn all lights off and sit in the dark, with no noise(headaches).

Of course sex drive is at the all time low. Who is in the mood to go for it when you are bleeding with a terrible headache?

The first few nights I had a horrible time falling asleep and staying asleep.

Well... at this point I have had headaches... all day for a week now. My head hurts like someone is pounding it against a wall. I have not had a headache in years. My stomach has been upset/ feeling as though I may have to throw up.

I am afraid that I may start seeing the other symptoms that ladies have talked about.
When you had the symptoms did they all happen at once or one at a time over different time periods?

I am so glad I found this website. I had my IUD put in January of this year. I have had cramping that feels like sharp pain shooting through my lower abdomen down to the top of my thighs. The discharge is my main problem. I figured it was related to the IUD because I haven't had any more problems "down there" in quite a while. The discharge I have completely fills up a pantiliner. For some reason, it gets worse the latter part of the day. The odor is embarrassing. I have been to the doctor twice. Nothing was found. No infections of any kind. My doctor did give me on the second visit some sort of antibiotic because he said the discharge was "old blood". Well, it helped for about two weeks, and not it's back. I have visited other sites and have read similar complaints. I really believe that I should have this thing taken out. I miss being normal.

I am a 24 year old mother of two, a Four year old, and an 8 month old. I got Mirena inserted 10 weeks after the birth of my daughter. It sounded so appealing, just get it inserted and forget about it. Well it's been almost 6 months and I certainly haven't forgotten about it. I had constant bleeding when I first got it, I bled for two straight months. And more often then not since then. It is always unpredictable, so I usually either wear a tampon, or pantyliner, which is horrible. I have no idea when my menstrual cycle is anymore, and I always used to be like clockwork. Even when I'm not bleeding, I am having more discharge. I am always tender in my uterus, and quite often, I actually have contractions. It even hurts if my kids set on my lap too hard. I also have extreme moodiness, with feelings of guilt after outbursts. I haven't really gained weight, but I feel very bloated in my stomach. I have no energy, which I need with two kids. And about four months ago I broke out with eczema like rashes on my face. I never struggled with acne, and it never occurred to me until my mom suggested that it may be from the mirena. We don't think we want anymore children, but I feel like we are too young and it is too soon to do anything permanent. But I'm not sure if this is worth it. I have an appointment on April 2nd with my OB to discuss this, and I just might have it removed.
